About this property

Riverfront luxury in the woods - main level master bedroom

Four bedroom plus game room w/ futon, THREE full baths, sunroom/office, hot tub, spacious decks, master suite with Jacuzzi, 2nd bath with Jacuzzi, laundry, open (social) kitchen with modern appliances, screened porch with gas grill, and fine furnishings throughout.

The property has private river beach access to the Shavers fork river and is engulfed in trees, adjacent to neighboring 30+ acres of privately-owned undeveloped and open fields, and situated just across the gravel road from the one-million acre Monongahela National Forest.

The house features teak floors, vaulted ceilings, natural wood-plank paneling, wireless internet, 2 televisions with DVD players, stereo, and a 6 person hot tub. The game room includes a 32' flat screen TV, Wii entertainment system (games available), assorted board games, toddler puzzles, cards, 100s of other toys and games, a card table with chairs, and dart board. There are about 100 classic DVDs for various ages available for viewing.

For a cozy winter, fall or early spring visit use the forced-air gas furnace, supplemental baseboard heat in downstairs bedrooms, and a wood-burning fireplace in the living room (around ten pieces of firewood per night's stay is provided -- if you require extra please inquire). In summer, there is central A/C or a whole house fan to cool things off.

If you are looking for a remote mountain getaway and are willing to roll with what comes from a country vacation, you will be hard pressed to find a more beautiful spot!

In winter months, be prepared for snowy and/or icy road conditions by driving a 4WD or suitable vehicle. Having chains for your car in the trunk is another good option. That is advisable whenever driving in wintry conditions in the mountains of WV as the roads are often hazardous. At times the snow can be deep and it takes 24-48 hours before it is plowed, therefore you should be prepared to be flexible about travel.

The cabin is remote, so even in clear weather its narrow mountain gravel road can be concerning to those not experienced. Depending on whether the road crew has done repairs recently there may be potholes. In most cases you can drive around them, but there may be a few on the way that you’ll just need to slowly drive through. There are also no guardrails on the road, but it has several turnouts to allow cars to pass. We've been told that the gravel is not suitable for street motorcycles.

Pet friendly -- dogs only please, and no more than two dogs per reservation unless owner exception is granted in writing.

Owners provide a starter quantity of paper products, bathroom soap, and laundry/dish detergent. Personal toiletries are to be provided by Guests.

If you are looking for a remote mountain getaway and are willing to roll with what comes from a country vacation, you will be hard pressed to find a more beautiful spot!

Because the house is surrounded by forests, the creek, and the river, there is plenty of nature to enjoy but also to endure. Mice will occasionally come inside, and although we set hidden traps to keep them from settling in, there is a possibility that you will see them during your stay depending on whether they've found a food source recently (it could be from a prior guest -- not your own doing.) We do, however, check to make sure that the kitchen implements are sanitary at the beginning of your stay.

The bug situation is that we are at a high enough elevation to not have a mosquito problem, but there will be gnats in the field, and moths at night wanting to get into the house. There will also be plenty of dead bugs that wedge themselves between the screens and the windows.

If these aspects of nature are acceptable to you, then you will find a beautiful place of nature in which to relax and enjoy your vacation!

Cabin
We arrived after 4 in the dark. You could not see the cabin from the road and the 49 is a small 4” disk on the fence. Maybe turn on outdoor lights for better view. The 40 rules was a bit over the top. We were very careful not to do anything wrong which took away a little from our once a year family get together. Other than that we did enjoy ourselves as a family. Didn’t mind the mice.

Secluded hideaway
Pros: If you are a writer, artist, avid reader or just need a solitary vacation this is a perfect home. The kitchen is very well outfitted for preparing meals and the gas grill outside is large. There is a screened in porch with a picnic table for eating or painting outside the kitchen. There is a mown path down to the river for easy access. The MB has a very comfortable bed. Water is delicious clear mountain water, and the pressure is great. The host is very reachable and can answer all your questions. Cons: There is no tv reception and very slow internet connections, which can be upgraded for an additional price. There are DVD's but I would suggest if you are avid evening couch potatoes to bring your own. Unfortunately, the mice were rather active around 10 p.m. running up and down the fireplace and on the kitchen counters. Make sure all of your food and dog food is secured in a cooler, refrigerator, microwave, or inside the oven. The road into the property (past Stuart Recreation Area) is gravel, narrow and 1 lane with pullovers for passing traffic. The host provides directions a few days before you arrive and includes this information. We discovered that going into Elkins and taking route 9 into the property was not so hair raising.

Sibling Get-Away Weekend
The rustic house in the woods of West Virginia lived up to our expectations. While the furniture was a bit worn, the kitchen and appliances were excellent! Travel to the cabin was easy via interstates and divided 4-lane highways. The final 4 miles were as the owner described--narrow and gravel--but, the road was overall well maintained and one group even found it in the dark. We enjoyed the quaint town of Elkins, took in a WV Railway Excursion, explored the national forest, tried some stream fishing, and enjoyed the local restaurants and shops. A great getaway for my family of eight 70+ year-olds!

Beautiful Remote Cabin
We enjoyed our stay at this beautiful cabin. Our only desire was that the cabin was closer to the Cheat River. Larissa, the Owner, was very sweet to us, and Sarah, the Property Manager, was very attentive to answer all our questions immediately. Thank you so much for this family vacation in the West Virginia Mountains.

Great place in the woods
My family and I had a lovely long weekend at this cabin off the beaten track. The house was well accommodated, plenty of room for all to sleep and eat and play. There's a huge yard by the river, which is a great place for kids and dogs to play. We got in some nice hikes and got to see the glorious Dolly Sods.

Excellent vacation
We had a wonderful time at this property. I struggle with technology and the owners never seemed bothered by my questions. Our family had a great time. My oldest daughter found everything she wanted to use in the kitchen (she is learning to cook) and our disabled son said it was “the best week ever.” This house really delivers.

Riverfront in the woods
Other than the peace and quiet out in the woods this was not what we expected at all. There were mice inside every night, many surfaces in the house were not cleaned, lots of light bulbs burnt out, don’t let the TV’s fool you there is absolutely no cable, the Wi-Fi is terrible and your only allowed up to a certain amount of usage per day with out being charged more, so no streaming or using the internet, no signal either to make calls and the landline provided had a dial tone but none of the buttons were working, the hot tub buttons only worked half the time, the bathroom sinks were not draining properly. Not at all what it seemed from the posting.

terrific cabin, woods, river -- great place to relax and enjoy
We loved our stay. Great cabin, beautiful wood construction, great amenities. Very well-maintained and a lovely, relaxing place to stay. Cabin property fronts on a beautiful river. Cabin is in the woods, one distant neighbor.. Peaceful and quiet. The gravel/dirt road (~3 miles) to get to the cabin is well-maintained, though curvy and not wide. Be careful driving at night, going to and from the cabin. Great BBQ place "Smoke on the Water" near Elkins (not far).

Great time was had by all
This was just what we were looking for. The house was beautiful with room for everyone. Having coffee on the deck was like being in a treehouse. Our two boys had a ball. The water was a little too cold and high for swimming but even when it rained we would go in the hot tub with the boys standing on the steps talking to us. Took a great train ride and went to Black Water Falls. Beautiful area and people in Elkins are wonderful. Would go back again. Thank you for letting us stay in your beautiful house

Perfect mountain get away!
My family of 6 had a wonderful time with ample space and amenities. We found many items we didn't necessarily expect to see such as folding chairs and hot dog sticks, and every kitchen gadget I think one would need! During our 7 night stay a storm came through and took out the power and subsequently the water. We had NO cell service what so ever which made it so we were reaching out in odd ways at odd times but the management ALWAYS answered kindly and kept us updated. The home was so large, beautiful, and clean. The river was so clear, my husband enjoyed the fishing, and my kids played in the field which you can see every bit of from the balcony. We felt very safe and secluded, and every neighbor we did meet was very kind. The house was full of literature about the history of the area, things to do, and a handy guide with everything about the home and conveniences around. If you're looking for a relaxing getaway to truly get away from everything and relax, this is an amazing place to go! We can't wait to go back.

Beautiful secluded cabin with a well-stocked kitchen
We loved our stay in this cabin. It was an excellent location and atmosphere for my friends and me. The kitchen was well-stocked, the beds were comfortable, and the hot tub worked well. The house was secluded and most everything was as described. The only negatives were that some of the check-in instructions didn't apply anymore which was a little confusing, and the wifi limit of 500 MB per day should have been spelled out in the cabin description before booking----the cabin is so remote that we didn't have data and had to rely on the wifi, and there was only 500 MB for all 6 adults to share. (Most of the moms wanted to check in with their little kids over facetime and to take care of some other things for work and church, but there wasn't enough wifi to allow for that.) That being said, the cabin was really lovely. We had a blast. It was Spring the first day and Winter the second day (warm and then snowy!), which was absolutely PERFECT. The best of both worlds. The owners were very responsive, which was especially nice when we needed a plow. I'd definitely recommend this cabin.

Weekend getaway
Our visit started out rocky because we were not able to get into our cabin do to the key code wasn't working. However, within 20-30, we received the correct information from the location manager and were able to enter. The place was very clean and we had plenty of space. We enjoyed our 3-night stay and loved how secluded it was. We will definitely book again. Thanks, Tamyron and Matt

Carl and Larisa got married and moved to Elkins, WV in 2000. Larisa moved from DC, and Carl moved from VA. Each had prior roots in WV and longed to return.

Why they chose this property

The location is ideal -- just far enough out to be immersed in the natural surroundings, but only 25 minutes from a full-service grocery store, movie theater, Davis and Elkins College, Randolph County Community Arts Center, antique shopping, and a YMCA. It is an hour from highly-rated golf or skiing. Spring and summer bring wonderful fishing, swimming, floating, and boating in the river; winter is great for cross-country skiing on the property or nearby, and alpine skiing is less than an hour's drive. Fall's foliage is not to be missed as the house is engulfed in trees and adjacent to the 1 million acre Monogahela National Forest, wonderful for hiking right out your door. Don't miss nearby Elkins to dine at a variety of restaurants, enjoy free exhibits at the Community Arts Center, and ride the scenic trains on the Durbin and Greenbrier Railroad. Davis and Elkins College is just 20 minutes away where you can enjoy live music and Appalachian arts at the internationally renowned 5-week long Augusta Festival. The Forest Festival every fall is a big draw, with carnival rides and almost two weeks of activities.

What makes this property unique

The property that this house sits on has been in Larisa's family since 1967. In 1995 Larisa decided to start construction on the property. She designed the house from the ground up and expressed her love of wood, light, warmth, and airiness into the architecture. The windows, decks, sunroom, and porch are situated for maximum enjoyment of the surrounding views of mountains, river, woods, and fields. The ventable skylights in the living room and loft provide sunlight and the lovely sound of rainfall. You can hear the river flow many nights when the windows are open.
