If you are looking for a remote mountain getaway and are willing to roll with what comes from a country vacation, you will be hard pressed to find a more beautiful spot! Here are some things you should know...
In winter months, be prepared for snowy and/or icy road conditions by driving a 4WD or suitable vehicle. Having chains for your car in the trunk is another good option. It's advisable whenever driving in wintry conditions in the mountains of WV as the roads are often hazardous. At times the snow can be deep and it takes 24-48 hours before it is plowed, therefore you should be prepared to be flexible about travel.
The cabin is remote, so even in clear weather its narrow mountain gravel road can be concerning to those not experienced. Depending on whether the road crew has done repairs recently there may be potholes. In most cases you can drive around them, but there may be a few on the way that you’ll just need to slowly drive through. There are also no guardrails on the road, but it has several turnouts to allow cars to pass. I've been told that the gravel is not suitable for street motorcycles.
Because the house is surrounded by forests and the river there is plenty of nature to enjoy, but also to endure. Mice will occasionally come inside, and although we set out-of-sight humane traps to keep them from settling in, there is a possibility that you will see them during your stay depending on whether they've found a food source recently (it could be from a prior guest -- not your own doing.) We do, however, check to make sure that the kitchen implements are sanitary at the beginning of your stay.
The bug situation is that we are at a high enough elevation to not have a mosquito problem, but there will be gnats in the field, and moths at night wanting to get into the house. There will also be plenty of dead bugs that wedge themselves between the screens and the windows, and cobwebs sprouting up here and there.
If these aspects of nature are acceptable to you, then you will find a beautiful place of nature in which to relax and enjoy your vacation!

Carl and Larisa got married and moved to Elkins, WV in 2000. Larisa moved from DC, and Carl moved from VA. Each had prior roots in WV and longed to return. They now live in Elkins just 20 minutes from the 'All Get Out' riverside vacation rental.
Why Larisa chose Elkins
The location is ideal -- just far enough out to be immersed in the natural surroundings, but only 25 minutes from a full-service grocery store, movie theater, Davis and Elkins College, Randolph County Community Arts Center, antique shopping, and a YMCA. It is an hour from highly-rated golf or skiing. Spring and summer bring wonderful fishing, swimming, floating, and boating in the river; winter is great for cross-country skiing on the property or nearby, and alpine skiing is less than an hour's drive. Fall's foliage is not to be missed as the house is engulfed in trees and adjacent to the 1 million acre Monogahela National Forest, wonderful for hiking right out your door. Don't miss nearby Elkins to dine at a variety of restaurants, enjoy free exhibits at the Community Arts Center, and ride the scenic trains on the Durbin and Greenbrier Railroad. Davis and Elkins College is just 20 minutes away where you can enjoy live music and Appalachian arts at the internationally renowned 5-week long Augusta Festival. The Forest Festival every fall is a big draw, with carnival rides and almost two weeks of activities.
What makes this House unique
The property that this house sits on has been in Larisa's family since 1967. In 1995 Larisa decided to start construction on the property. She designed the house from the ground up and expressed her love of wood, light, warmth, and airiness into the architecture. The windows, decks, sunroom, and porch are situated for maximum enjoyment of the surrounding views of mountains, river, woods, and fields. The ventable skylights in the living room and loft provide sunlight and the lovely sound of rainfall. You can hear the river flow many nights when the windows are open.

Lovely, spacious cabin in a beautiful setting.
“Spacious, well kept cabin with excellent amenities in a beautiful riverside setting. Great hikes and whitewater canoeing readily accessible. Somewhat remote, with about 4 miles of unpaved road leading to the cabin - but that's part of what makes the setting peaceful and unspoiled. Larisa was easily to work with. Highly recommended.”
Highly recommend! Wonderful home - clean, well-stocked, and charming. Excellent communication by owner, who went over and beyond to ensure we had an enjoyable stay. (One tip: Don't leave your shoes outside, or the neighbor's dog may run off with one. That's how my husband lost a slipper. Ha!)
Great spot on the river. Girls weekend was a huge hit!
Lots of rules lead me to believe guests are not always gracious! Please revise the directions to begin odometer count from the last turn... I didn't see gravel. snow on ground..and that was not a fork in the road. I ended up on the road you don't want to be on and has to turn around at night on ice :(
Also we ran into town for seasoned fire wood...the logs were green that were left for us.
Had a great time with my friends!
I'm glad you had a great time! I will update the directions per your suggestion right away.
I had an emergency half truckload of seasoned wood delivered right before your arrival after my manager noticed that the wood that had been delivered last week was green. I'm sorry it wasn't more obvious which was the "good wood". I'll reimburse you for the wood you had to buy.
I urge any guest to call me with any issues, as I can often get them taken care of pronto.
Good house, good stay!
We enjoyed ourselves... The kitchen/cooking was good, enough room for a smaller house.... The large center counter works well for a lot of food. Living room looked bigger in the picture, but was big enough and cozy. Jacuzzi was great the 1st night... 2nd night we had issues setting it but finally got it working.... 3rd night we could not get it to work, but we survived...
I just want potential guests to know that the house is 1600 square feet, which is pretty large for a cabin in this area. The kitchen is full-sized and open to the dining rom. The 4 bedrooms+sunroom+gameroom are distributed over 3 floors providing plenty of privacy for large parties. As for the hot tub, when I'm made aware of an issue I can almost always get it resolved during the stay. I was not aware of the problem until after the guest departed.
Property is just as seen in pictures. The place was quiet and perfect for relaxing. House was comfortable and had everything we needed. I would recommend this place!
Relaxing time with family
This cabin in the woods is a great place to take your loved ones. We had wonderful weather so the children were able to go outside and run down to the river. We played games that we hadn't played in along time, watched movies and laughed a lot. You cannot get cell phone service and there is limited internet which was wonderful for our family member to decompress and just enjoy each other. The house is spacious and Larisa has provided for all our needs.
We took 2 of our granddaughters on the Polar Express and also enjoyed the activities they offered during the day. Because the weather was so wonderful, the whole family played at City Park. It brought back wonderful memories for me as I grew up in Elkins but haven't been back in over 30 years.
The cabin/house is 4 miles on a gravel road so it does take a little time to travel in to town. Make sure you bring your food that you will need. You just can't run to the store! ;) Larisa has provided all cooking equipment. She also has provided linens so you really just need to bring your food!
Come prepared to relax and live in a different world.
The only items I would recommended that need to be in the house is a vacuum cleaner and mop. I like to clean up messes when they happen! :) Other than that, Larisa has thought of everything.
Berry picking on property may be available from late July into August, Go-Kart Track, Scenic Railroad Rides, Farmers Market, Arts Center.
Fishing guide service referral available.
