Your piece of paradise under the palmettos. . .
From the moment you walk through the front door, you'll be thrilled with your vacation home. 178 Glen Abbey sits on a spacious yard, with room for kids to play, lush tropical foliage to put you in a Kiawah mood, and majestic palmettos touching the sky. Your own salt water pool and a hot tub are elevated to tree-level, so you'll feel on top of the world. Surrounding the pool is a wood deck, teak lounge chairs with stylish cushions, teak dining set, and a gas grill. There's plenty of room for basking in the Carolina sun. As you relax in the pool, one story up, you can look out on Canvasback Pond. Its waters lap against your backyard, affording plenty of opportunity to admire the wildlife which call this spot home, including egrets, deer, pelicans, alligators, and heron. Before you know it, you'll discover the patterns and rhythms of nature here, which take the place of clocks and meetings.
Inside, the spacious and airy two-story home is designed on an open floor plan, with wood floors and handsome rugs. Downstairs, the grand living room, dining area, and kitchen all blend seamlessly together, so you, family, and guests can enjoy each other no matter the activity or time of day. The central focus of the living room is a large, comfy, u-shaped sectional sofa. You can watch satellite TV, listen to music, read selections from the house library, nestle up to the fireplace, or gaze out on the pool, backyard, and pond beyond. The dining room also faces the pool and pond, with a farmhouse table that will be the perfect place for family and friends to dine together. The kitchen, boasts a central island and eat-in breakfast bar, with the full range of appliances allowing you to prepare any meals. The living room, dining area, and kitchen all face the massive eastern windows fronting on the pool/deck, which makes everything bright and cheery throughout the home. The first floor Master Suite offers privacy, artful decorations, and colorful linens, as does the other first-floor bedroom. Meanwhile, the nautically-themed sun room has windows on all sides, with panoramic vistas of the glorious surroundings.
Upstairs, another Master Suite is just as private and tasteful, with a view of the pool and pond. Serene and comfortable, it's a great place for guests, offering peace and quiet no matter what's going on inside or out. The fourth bedroom's view is just as superb, while its interior is just as colorful. Every one of the four bedrooms has its own satellite TV, with DVD, walk-in closets, and bathrooms. You'll love sipping your morning coffee on the second-story screened-in porch, watching the sun rise over the pond and palms, while the kids splash in the pool below. Your cares will seem miles away, and the peaceful blend of nature and luxury will help you feel soothed and balanced.
Best of all, amazing private Kiawah beach is so close! Only a short 3 minute stroll from your front door, or a 90 second bike ride, along a path that winds its way under the island's forest canopy. This means no traffic, no parking worries, and no stress for you as family and friends go back and forth from the Atlantic's sand and surf to the comforts of home.
To make your getaway even easier, take advantage of kid-friendly extras provided, like pool and beach toys, games, fishing rigs, basketball hoop, DVDs and books. Grill outside and dine under the stars, or at home while one of Kiawah's restaurants or caterers delivers gourmet meals to you. Chefs will even come over and cook for you! Baby-sitting, grocery shopping and in-house massage are just some of the services you can call on. Make Kiawah's serene luxury your own in a friendly home your family will love!

We are a professional couple with four children who live in Pennsylvania. Having visited Kiawah as renters for many years, we knew it was the perfect spot for our family to enjoy the togetherness that is so hard to achieve in this busy world. Nature soothes our souls, so the wildlife views and seaside atmosphere are therapeutic. We know our older kids on bikes can explore the island in safety, while the younger ones have plenty to keep them busy here at the house. One of our children has a disability with limited mobility, so being very close to the beach is a must for us. We enjoy entertaining, and the house and setting offer our guests the chance to be social and also enjoy moments of solitude if they prefer. We're a family that thrives on flexibility, yet we like to be able to come together for meals, swimming, and other activities. That's why the house is perfect for us!
Kimberly Kupfer purchased this house in 2010
The combination of nature's beauty, the well-designed interior, and closeness to the beach made this house perfect for us. Because there is something for everyone -- beach, pool, bike paths, golf, fishing, or just going out for a stroll -- we know that all our family and guests will find plenty to do! Vanderhorst Plantation offers our favorite side of Kiawah: privacy combined with access to the resort's famous amenities. We never feel too far away from civilization, if we want a round of golf, or a fancy dinner out. But if we simply want to enjoy each other, we can do that in style.
With the beach just a short stroll or bike ride away, kids can go back and forth from the house to the ocean without our help. With our pool just below our second-story porch and deck, we can keep an eye on things while we relax or work. There are plenty of spaces for privacy in the home, but the living room and sundeck give us a lively common areas. The quiet streets and trails are perfect for bike riding. Canvasback Pond laps up against our tree-filled backyard, which gives us the sense of being amidst Kiawah's natural wonder.
This house was ideal for our family vacation. There was plenty of space for everyone. The layout was perfect to accommodate the needs of all three families--including little ones & nap time. There is even a pack n play and a booster seat/high chair for the littlest ones. The kitchen is well supplied--appreciated the melamine dishes/glasses for use outside on the deck dining table. The pool & hot tub are awesome & perfect gathering spot. It's a short, easy walk to the beach. The home owner is great to work with & very responsive.
Spent April vacation at this home and had a great time. Beautiful neighborhood close to beach (about a 4 minute walk). Great open layout on first floor with kitchen the centerpiece. Extremely comfortable, clean bedrooms with private baths. Pool and spa were a great place to relax in afternoon and evening. Highly recommend staying here to experience the beauty of Kiawah!
We have just returned from a 3 night weekend at this home ... it was perfect. We were two little boys and their parents, plus both their Grandmas. Plenty of space. Heated pool was amazing. Beach was an easy walk. Kitchen was a TREAT. And laundry room with top quality appliances was much appreciated. We all LOVE this house and the rental experience was easy and excellent. My daughter was the actual renter but she may not have time to write a review and I want to be sure people know this is a good one!!
We had a great time. House location was perfect, plenty of beach towels available, well equipped kitchen. The screened in porch was a great spot to get some work done and still enjoy being outside. Kids loved the pool and proximity to the ocean was great. We barely turned on the TV during our stay, but there were plenty of movies available if we needed one. Kids loved the house and there was plenty of room for us to spread out.
This house turned out to be a real gem, for it's location and the private HEATED pool/hot tub. Even though the end of our week was cool, but clear on the beach, the pool and hot tub were awesome! Saw lots of wildlife, even a bobcat! MUST DO SUNSET AT OCEAN COURSE! I really appreciated all the extras left for us, including laundry detergent, blankets, towels, pillows and cooking supplies-we longed for nothing. Very clean house; all in great working condition. Highly recommend bikes for short stroll to beach for sunrises and Sanctuary for lunch! Great location; worth it being closer to beach with easy access. Thank you!
My extended family had a delightful vacation in this beautiful home. There were 9 of us ( 3 of whom were kids), and the home was PERFECT. The layout is so nice for all of us to spend time together (and enough space/rooms to get isolation when we needed!) , and we had so much fun alternating between going to the beach (an easy walk), and relaxing by the pool and hot tub at the house. Thank you so much for the great memories and we will be back!
