Overview

About the property

Private Seafront Cottage, 1 Bedroom holiday house in a garden on the ocean

The 'Cottage at Sunset Cove' is a fabulous oceanfront property located on private grounds that are fenced with gated-only access 5 minutes from Mendocino Village. It is oceanfront, completely isolated, and has 2 acres of flowering gardens and walking paths, with parking on site. The shingled cottage/bungalow, which is entered through a rose covered archway, is an intimate hideaway. It is decorated like a 'country bungalow' in soothing blues and whites. Stone floors are covered with comforting area rugs, the sofa has down pillows, and a bistro table holds your welcome " wine and chocolate". The owners have decorated with artifacts from their travels, and have included in the cottage their love of classical literature and music, and local artwork. There is a beautiful gas fireplace and a completely separate bedroom with luxurious linens. Windows overlooking the gardens and ocean are large and everywhere. You can go to sleep with the calming sound of crashing waves on the double cove inlets. Peaceful and quiet, the area is a treasure trove for discovering wildlife - deer, wild turkeys, hawks, whales, blue herons, seals, porpoises, geese, and the occasional Orca. Russian Gulch State Park and Point Cabrillo Light House are less than 1 mile away, where nature walks abound. Mendocino Village, designated an official historical town circa the 1870's, is just 2 miles away, with wonderful restaurants and pubs, hidden garden paths for strolling, and specialty shops.

The cottage has a separate bedroom with large closets, luxury linens and 6 down pillows, living room with fireplace, queen-sized pull-out sofa bed, 2 comfortable reading chairs, and French bistro table. Teak reading chairs overlook the 2-sided deck and spa. There is also a large outside table and gas BBQ for cooking. The separate kitchen has dishes, glasses, pans and other cooking necessities and specialty items, and is stocked with beer, wine, bottled water, jams, coffee, tea and condiments. A basket of 'goodies' is added for late night snacks. Music, videos, books, games, binoculars will enhance your entertainment options. Bathroom has a powerful shower and a deep soaking tub with views of the gardens. Extra large windows from both the bedroom and the living room look directly out onto the ocean through the gardens, and are adjoined by a large deck with your own hot tub and seating for viewing the water and nature. Private gardens with paths surround the property and reading benches are sprinkled throughout the acreage. Best of all, there are sunsets 365 days a year (excluding rainy days, of course!) and you can view them all!

Because of the proximity to the ocean, this property is not suitable for children under 14.

Keywords: Secluded oceanfront cottage, dramatic whitewater ocean views, private hot tub, large deck overlooking gardens and ocean, private headlands, flowering gardens and pathways, reading benches, stream and waterfall, smells and sounds of crashing ocean waves, romantic and private, pet friendly and completely fenced.

About Cathy Karabensh

Jerry and Cathy Karabensh have lived in Mendocino for 16 years, are retired, and enjoying life so much in the area that they want to share their view of the world with others. They have 1dog, and invite you to bring yours along.

Cathy Karabensh purchased this cottage in 2000

Why Cathy Karabensh chose Mendocino

Sunset Cove is actually 2 coves with black sand beaches when the tide is out. The property is cliffside, so you can see white water crashing on the rocks below. Most of the year you can see the waterfall that spills out into Sunset Cove. The Cottage is set nestled in a banquet of bushes along the north, keeping your deck and hot tub wind-free from the northwest winds that are typical of the area.

What makes this cottage unique

Private, tranquil, and romantic, The Cottage is traditionally decorated in seaside colors, more like a home than a hotel. The Karabensh's have included memorabilia from their extensive travels as well as books, movies, and an array of helpful holiday treats. Your own private hot tub awaits your leisure usage at any time.

A perfect getaway with our four legged family member

  • 5 of 5

The Cottage at Sunset Cove was a memorable experience. The ocean views are no less than perfection. The amenities made for a very comfortable stay, from a fully stocked kitchen to luxurious bedding and linens. But the absolute best was the accommodations that were made for our dog. Cathy, the owner, provided doggie treats, waste bags for our pup and a comprehensive binder on where to take our dog. Riley, our labradoodle, had a time of her life on the various excursions we made.

The Cottage at Sunset Cove will not disappoint, we hope to return for a visit soon.

A perfect way to start the New Year

  • 5 of 5

As a Christmas gift, my wife and I gave each other 3 nights away at the delightful Cottage on Sunset Cove to celebrate the dawning of 2018. We spent New Year's Eve and the next two nights enjoying this delightful little retreat.

Jerry and Cathy are the owners of the cottage, which resides on the same property as their beautiful home. It is an absolutely spectacular setting - several acres directly overlooking Sunset Cove. The grounds are beautiful - the landscaping reminds one of an English garden and you immediately feel a sense of serenity upon driving through their gate and overlooking what will be your home for the next 3 days.

Cathy had provided extensive driving instructions to us beforehand so that we had no problem at all finding the property. She was quite excited that we were bringing our two dogs as she and Jerry also have a dog and are very "dog friendly" when it comes to the Cottage rentals. That alone was a reason for us to anticipate our stay but we found there were so many more reasons to discover.

Jerry greeted us as we drove onto to the property and directed us as to where to park our car. He could not have been more gracious. He gave us a quick tour of the property and then showed us the Cottage. It is a jewel - beautiful layout of space, lovely view of Sunset Cove, and Cathy has done a spectacular job with her decorating - the furniture and little touches she has used are so tasteful and beautifully color coordinated - as nice as you find in many much more expensive resorts. You immediately feel a coordinated sense of warmth and welcome. As an extra bonus, Cathy had laid out a welcome note, a bottle of red wine and a small plate of chocolates for us - our stay was off to a good start!!

The kitchen and bathroom are beautifully appointed. The kitchen has the most complete set of glassware, dishes, silverware, pots, pans, utensils, etc of any rental we've had. The bathroom has a complete set of wonderful amenities - hand soap, body lotion, shampoo, conditioner and bath salts. The bed is super comfortable, with very fine sheets and pillows and a very cozy comforter - we slept VERY well.

The property is like a park so there was plenty of room to walk our dogs (Cathy even provided "poop bags")and there is direct access to the Sunset Cove Highlands where our dogs could run free to their heart's extent. There is also a private walk from the Cottage to a bench where you can share a glass of wine while watching the sunset.

Beautiful, romantic, and respectfully private

  • 5 of 5

This is about the eighth property at which we have stayed in Mendocino over ten years. This and Abalone Cottage next door are far and away our favorites. The setting is beautiful, the hospitality is perfect without being intrusive, and the cottage is lovely and perfectly appointed. This is the perfect place to reboot your batteries. We cannot recommend it more highly.

Heavenly place!

  • 5 of 5

We loved everything about your cottage..the setting next to the ocean, the beautiful gardens and the cottage is so comfortable and beautifully decorated. We enjoyed the hot tub under the stars, the soaker tub, the fully stocked kitchen, the artwork/paintings on the walls....and simply the peacefulness of this setting. We also enjoyed being able to have our dog with us to hike the trails of all the state parks nearby. Thank you for everything and we hope to come back next year...Renee and Irene from Seattle.

A blissful and serene hideaway!!

  • 5 of 5

This was the perfect "getaway cottage" for my husband and I to share a romantic 4 days celebrating our 1 year wedding anniversary. This was our first time to Northern California and Mendocino had been a bucket list visit. This cottage is tucked away on the most pristine coastline property and is secluded from almost everything. The accommodations were perfectly comfortable and Heidi, our host, was most gracious and kind. A must stay place if you plan to visit Mendocino!!

The cottage was truly beautiful overlooking the ocean with many garden paths all through the property. It felt very European and we will certainly return in the future.
