The name of our cottage is Craic'n Crabs. Craic is Gaelic for good times and fun. It is located on a quiet cul de sac within a 15 minute walk (1 mile) from the shopping and restaurants of Duck. The water photos of our property have not been zoomed. You have an almost 360 degree view of water from our decks and incredible views from the master bedroom as well as views from the two other bedrooms. You can view a video from our top deck above. Also, when the winds are blowing strongly from the east you can enjoy the sounds of the waves crashing on the beach.

On the main floor of the house you will find a wide open family room, dining area, kitchen, guest bedroom and kids bedroom as well as a full bath. There is also a screened porch right off of the kitchen. The top floor has the master bedroom, the master bath as well as a balcony running the full width of the house over looking the main floor.

The master bedroom has a king sized bed, the guest bedroom has a queen and the kids room has a full over full bunkbed as well as a single bed.

The best views of the water can be found on our expansive top deck. Our hot tub is located here which provide fantastic views of the ocean and sound during the day and spectacular views of the night sky to enjoy star gazing. We have plenty of seating for hanging out with the family or enjoy tanning on a lounge chair while listening to the outside ipod/stereo system. You can access the top deck from the balcony over the family room, the master bedroom or the outside stairs through the screened porch.

Our cottage is a short walk to the beach as well as the Albermarle Sound, pool and tennis court. Enjoy crabbing at the end of our neighborhood dock, which also has a gazebo. There are only 5 homes on our cul de sac resulting in a safe and quiet area for kids to play. Our backyard is essentially a dune.

Craic'n Crabs will feel like your second home. It is warm and cozy. Everything you need is provided - from a fully stocked kitchen, beach chairs and boogie boards to a pack'n play, baby gate, wagon, beach toys and crab trap.

Enjoy eating in our screened in porch right off our kitchen with beautiful views of the Sound. The master bedroom has a wet bar. We have a convenient and powerful outside shower for when you return from a long day at the beach. Our beds are comfortable for a great nights sleep and our hammock is nice for a quiet, shaded nap during the day. We also have a convenient fish cleaning station.

Please refer to the reviews section to see what past guests have said about our home.

We hope that you enjoy your stay!

About Mark McMahon

Our family of four first went to and fell in love with Duck in 1998. Although we live 6 hours away in Pennsylvania we make the drive down to the outer banks every chance we get.

Mark McMahon purchased this house in 2007

Why Mark McMahon chose Duck

Duck is a quiet and beautiful village. It is a great walking town with plenty of shopping and restaurants. The private beaches are spectacular without all of the crowds of the northeast. Duck is conveniently located so that you can drive to the off road area to see the wild horses in the north or head south to Oregon Inlet to charter a fishing boat.

What makes this house unique

This is one of the highest elevations in Duck and provides unparelleled views of the water from almost all directions. We wanted a quiet street for the kids with an easy walk to town, the beach and the sound. Our neighborhood has private beach access as well as a private pool and a private tennis courts.

Space for relaxation and reflection

  • 5 of 5

My two adult daughters and I came to Duck at this time of the year seeking a relaxing, comfortable, and quiet space to reflect on recent life-changing events in our lives. And we found just the place at Craic'n Crabs!. It has plenty of room, but is not so large as to feel like being in a hotel. The kitchen was very clean and well equipped; however, we chose mainly to enjoy the seafood in nearby restaurants. We loved the dining room table and chairs and found the living and sleeping areas quite comfy. But the great views of sunset and sunrise from the top deck were the best! The house's location is ideal for easy access to the beach and the shops and restaurants in Duck. Our drives to the Currituck Lighthouse and the Wright Memorial were not too long and proved to be quite enjoyable. A return stay would be very nice!

Almost Heaven

  • 5 of 5

We are not new to the outer banks, this is probably our 10th visit but our first stay at Craic'n Crabs. As soon as we got into the house and started poking around I began to feel that we were really in someone's home and opposed to a rental property. All the amenities and creature comforts were there. And while we enjoyed the inside so much, we spent most of our time sitting out on the screened porch and especially on the top deck. WHAT A VIEW!! The ocean to the east and the sound to the west enjoyed on the most comfortable outdoor furniture I've ever sat on.

Oh, did I mention that the weekend that we were scheduled to arrive, there was this little hurricane named Matthew that rolled through the island. Without being under any obligation to do so, Mark allowed us to postpone our trip to the following week. Try doing that sometime with the properties managed by reality companies. This is just one example of how Mark goes above and beyond to make sure that your stay will be as pleasurable as possible. Can not wait to come back.

Wonderfu, peaceful and comfortable home

  • 5 of 5

My wife and our two teenage daughters took our inaugural trip to the Outer Banks and had the very good fortune of staying in this home and working with the owner. I am skeptical by nature, and I can only say that absolutely everything was just as promised, just as described and just as pictured in the photos. The beach access is terrific and only a short walk (all down hill) or a very quick drive with parking available. The Sound access is also very nice, and offers beautiful views and a quiet place to sit, read, dip your toes in the water, etc. The wonderful business district in Duck is a short walk or bike ride or a quick drive from the house. The house itself is laid out very nicely, with plenty of room for group activities such as playing games, eating or enjoying conversation around the large, comfortable table on the main level, and there are plenty of quiet places to be alone or in a smaller group -- on one of the decks, in one of the bedrooms or in a shady spot on the hammock. The views from the decks are terrific. The kitchen was well-equipped and had everything we needed for meal preparation. Very importantly, the house was very, very clean. As an example, on our first morning I wiped up a small water spill on the floor in the main living area in a major traffic area leading to the kitchen, and I used a white paper towel -- the towel was as white after wiping up the spill as it was before wiping up the spill, as there was no dirt at all on the floor. The bathrooms and kitchen were also very, very clean. I can't say much more than all of the others here, but I would say again that everything was just as promised and the owners were a pleasure to deal with. We look forward to returning!

Looking forward to next time

  • 5 of 5

Our time at Craic'n Crabs was wonderful. The views from the top deck and hot tub were better than we expected! We loved just sitting up there, day or night! (The sky was so dark and the stars so bright!) The kitchen had everything we needed and then some. Although we didn't use the pool or tennis courts, it was nice knowing they were available. The walk to the beach was a short one and made easy with the wagon carrying all our stuff. There were a total of 5 adults in our party and it was very comfortable. We can't wait to return to OBX and plan to stay here again!

Great Vacation

  • 5 of 5

Our family had a wonderful vacation at Craic'n Crabs! We went after Labor Day and so Duck and OBX in general was nice and quiet. The house was very clean, well stocked with everything you'd need to cook etc. A very comfortable stay.

The shops in Duck are only a short walk, so the board walk and shops are very accessible. The beach is also very easy to get to - we always chose to drive because we have young kids, but you can easily walk. The pool and tennis courts were also a lot of fun.

We love Duck as a location because it is one of the first destinations you reach - easier for the drive down and back. It is also one of the most charming towns.

Mark, the owner, was very pleasant to deal with from beginning to end. He called to let us know that we could arrive a day earlier than we had booked due to the house being vacated earlier, which we took him up on. Our deposit was also returned early and with no issues.

We look forward to returning soon!

Very Positive Experience

  • 5 of 5

This home lived up to --and in some ways exceeded-- the reviews. Aesthetically, it was actually nicer, I thought, than the VRBO pictures indicate.

Top deck off master suite is quite nice for watching sunsets and taking in the stars. Hot tub and outdoor shower both great. Mattresses were comfortable. Beach and nautical themed decorations were tasteful.

We made a lot of use of the tennis court, which was in good shape, and we never had to wait to play. The well-maintained community pool is also a nice feature.

One particularly noteworthy aspect of the house is the quality of the kitchen accessories. All the cooking utensils you could possibly need for meal prep are provided. Knives were sharp; plates, glasses, and cookware was ample and in good repair. True to the house name, there were abundant utensils for preparing and eating crabs (we also caught a few off the pier on the bayside, using the provided crab trap.)

We brought our own beach umbrella and boogie boards, but we could have easily gotten by with those that are available in the house's utility room. No need to bring a beach cart for hauling things -- there's a wagon big enough for 4 beach chairs, umbrella, beach bag, and beach toys.

Mark, the owner, was very cooperative and accommodating. Renting and return of deposit were seamless transactions. He even let us know that, unexpectedly, the next renter would not be arriving on the day of our scheduled check out and that we could stay longer if we wanted. While our travel schedule did not allow us to take advantage of his generous offer, we were able to clean, pack up, and depart at a more leisurely pace, which was greatly appreciated.

All -in-all, excellent value. Highly recommended!
