Space 1,500 sq. ft.
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 - 7 nights

About the property

House, 4 Bedrooms, 3 Baths, (Sleeps 9)

Location, location, location… Located in the popular Island Park community on the exclusive West end of Ocean Isle, the house is just a three minute or less walk to the beach. The walkway to the beach is a direct path right across the street. No twists or turns to get there.

Ocean Isle is one of the most desirable family beaches on the east coast. On the beach you can swim, surf, fish, fly a kite, build sand castles, go shelling, go for a walk, or just relax and catch some rays!

When you want to take a break from the beach, there are plenty of local activities to choose: bicycling (you can rent bikes on the island), kayak and boat rentals, boat tours and cruises, golf, mini golf, shopping, restaurants, a NC Aquarium, amusement places, ice cream shops, and much more!

There are twelve golf courses and numerous restaurants within ten miles, and hundreds within 50 miles. With North Myrtle Beach just 25 minutes away, a world of shopping, restaurants and entertainment await. Barefoot Landing and Broadway at the Beach are typical must sees that offer live entertainment at the Alabama Theater, the House of Blues, and the Palace Theater. Don’t feel like driving to eat out? Walk from the house to the 'Isles Restaurant' for fine dining right on the beach.

Historic Wilmington is located a short 45 minutes away. An ideal location for shopping, antiquing, and dining.

About James M. Conrad

James and Stephanie Conrad live in the Charlotte area with their three children. They often vacationed in several beach towns in NC and SC, and finally decided to invest in a beach property they could occasionally use and share with their friends (and you, too!). James is a professor at UNC Charlotte, and Stephanie is a technical writer. The Ocean Isle Beach area is the perfect, safe, and quiet area for the Conrads and friends, and hope you will agree, too!

James M. Conrad purchased this house in 2002

Why James M. Conrad chose Southern Coast

The house is on a quiet, wide street in a family oriented neighborhood that is perfect for biking, using a scooter, skate boarding, etc. In the back is a large deck and lagoon loaded with turtles and other wildlife. Enjoy your morning coffee, an evening cocktail, or relax and read in one of the rockers. Enjoy the family oriented community in an uncrowded environment.

What makes this house unique

One of the benefits of the house is that you can stay in a smoke-free, pet-free home that provides many amenities that others may not offer. The house has wireless internet, cable, a kitchen with everything you would need to cook, and access to the outside storage shed with beach toys, chairs, bikes, a beach cart, and a Weber charcoal grill.

Overall we had a good stay.

  • 3 of 5

It's never good to be the first renters of the season. First the good - the house has plenty of room with nice amenities. The extra beach chairs and bikes were a huge hit with the kids. The kitchen had everything you need to enjoy your stay and all was is great working condition. Second, the not so good - unfortunately the air conditioning for the second floor didn't work, but the 24 hour assistance help (Zach) was very responsive and was able to fix the problem within the next day. Next, they never got the ice machine in the freezer fixed during our stay which was OK, I guess, because bags of ice could be bought 5 minutes away. I will say that if you have issues walking up and down a lot of stairs this place might not be best. My wife, kids and I didn't have any issues at all, but the elderly in our group struggled a bit. Sorry to note that the "Owners" of the adjacent house had two very loud dogs who barked about every time we came in and out of the house. They also had their college kids and their friends visiting which made for some late nights if you are a light sleeper. BUT you can never pick your neighbors. Overall it's a nice house with a short walk to the beach.

Owner's Response: I am sorry to hear of the problems with the AC and icemaker. Unfortunately, I had not tested the AC before the season started (no reason to run it!), but I heard it was fixed quickly. We have a local realtor handle the problems that may crop up, so the problems should have been addressed immediately. Nearly all the houses on Ocean Isle Beach are on stilts and have stairs - few have elevators, too. The high rises are better at accommodating those with limited mobility. As you rightly observe, it is difficult to choose who will be in the place next to the house on any given weekend :-( Nonetheless, you did find the house spacious and provided many amenities that made it a home. I hope you would consider us again.

The rental was perfect. The only downside . was having to bring sheets and towels.some of the other realtors included them.

Owner's Response: When I started going to the beach, I was surprised that NC rentals (up and down the coast) did not come with linen as a standard practice. I heard this is because many people like to bring their own to save the cost. Linens are available for rent from the realtor, if you wish. I also have LOTS of towels available for people who stay - we have left these in the linen closets. Renters are pretty good at making sure they are cleaned and available for the next renter. This is another example of how we try to make this a "home" (and not a rental property) that you are using for a short time.

Overall good

  • 4 of 5

Overall nice property. The good- Clean, spacious, large amount of kitchen utensils, a bucket of toys for the kids to play with, beach was beautiful. We went to sharkys us for supper one night - food was mediocre but the live music afterwards was nice. The bad: a little farther than 2 blocks from the beach and with little kids it made it a bit difficult. Also the closest beach access had about 10 steps on each side which was interesting to navigate to say the least with a beach cart, chairs, kids toys, oh and the children. There were also a lot of teenagers driving golf carts recklessly in the community.

Owner's Response: Thanks for comments on the house. As a bit of clarification, it is about a 3 minute walk to the beach . . . I guess it is a little longer if you are taking small kids with you. I provide a garden cart to load up the equipment. When you get to the beach access, you need to climb stirs to get over the dunes (this is typical for most NC beaches). I apologize for the teens - I have notified the local police (cart drivers actually need a drivers license to operate one, even in private neighborhoods).

wonderful place

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay in this beach home at OIB. We'd go back in a heartbeat. It was clean, comfortable, decorated so lovely, and terrifically well-appointed with so many nice extras -- grill, bikes & helmet, wagon & beach cart, beach chairs and toys. Even a great huge tub of children's indoor toys in one of the upstairs bedrooms --- our 4 year old called it his "treasure" during our visit. This is really is a fabulous place. Thanks for sharing your home with us!

Owner's Response: Glad you loved it! We try to ensure to leave many "extra" things in the house to make it more like a home. We also continually update the furniture - for example, we just replaced the two couches right before your visit.

june week at the beach

  • 4 of 5

we had a wonderful time in this house!

the ONLY reason i didn't give it 5 stars

is because of the early checkout time.

we couldn't check in until 3, which is normal i think,

but having to leave by 9am....that seemed too early to all of us.

we lost that entire day.

we would recommend a later checkout.

say around 11. that seems more reasonable to all of us.

the house was great!

the lagoon was great!

kitchen was great!

honestly, it was just the checkout time,

but i have to say that because of that

we will most likely look at other properties next summer.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the kudos on the house. We have Williamson Realty handle the management (payment, check-in/check-out, cleaning), so the times are by their policy. Other OIB rental companies have the check-in at 4pm, Williamson has 3pm. Other OIB rental companies have check-out at 10am, Williamson is 9am. However, when I asked Williamson about the policy they said: "We do allow later checkout if the renters ask. We try to keep it to no later than 10:00 am. We allow renters to check in when it is clean and ready. By 3:00 pm check in on Saturday, we have already checked in approximately half of the people coming in. We do our very best to accommodate people." The large difference in check-out to check-in times (6 hours) is to allow time to ensure the houses are cleaned. There are many, many rental homes on the island and a limited number of housekeeping people to complete the task. I hope you will reconsider staying at our home next year!! Jim

Great vacation rental. My family really enjoyed the location. Very private but just a short walk to the beach. Kitchen is well stocked making it easy to cook in. Would definitely rent again.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the kind words! We try very hard to include many "extras" that you ordinarily do not find in a vacation rental house (i.e. lots of kitchen implements, toys, beach cart) so that your stay is like your home.
