About the property

House, 4 Bedrooms, 3 Baths, (Sleeps 9)

Location, location, location… Located in the popular Island Park community on the exclusive West end of Ocean Isle, the house is just a three minute or less walk to the beach. The walkway to the beach is a direct path right across the street. No twists or turns to get there.

Ocean Isle is one of the most desirable family beaches on the east coast. On the beach you can swim, surf, fish, fly a kite, build sand castles, go shelling, go for a walk, or just relax and catch some rays!

When you want to take a break from the beach, there are plenty of local activities to choose: bicycling (you can rent bikes on the island), kayak and boat rentals, boat tours and cruises, golf, mini golf, shopping, restaurants, a NC Aquarium, amusement places, ice cream shops, and much more!

There are twelve golf courses and numerous restaurants within ten miles, and hundreds within 50 miles. With North Myrtle Beach just 25 minutes away, a world of shopping, restaurants and entertainment await. Barefoot Landing and Broadway at the Beach are typical must sees that offer live entertainment at the Alabama Theater, the House of Blues, and the Palace Theater. Don’t feel like driving to eat out? Walk from the house to the 'Isles Restaurant' for fine dining right on the beach.

Historic Wilmington is located a short 45 minutes away. An ideal location for shopping, antiquing, and dining.

About James M. Conrad

James and Stephanie Conrad live in the Charlotte area with their three children. They often vacationed in several beach towns in NC and SC, and finally decided to invest in a beach property they could occasionally use and share with their friends (and you, too!). James is a professor at UNC Charlotte, and Stephanie is a technical writer. The Ocean Isle Beach area is the perfect, safe, and quiet area for the Conrads and friends, and hope you will agree, too!

James M. Conrad purchased this house in 2002

Why James M. Conrad chose Ocean Isle Beach

The house is on a quiet, wide street in a family oriented neighborhood that is perfect for biking, using a scooter, skate boarding, etc. In the back is a large deck and lagoon loaded with turtles and other wildlife. Enjoy your morning coffee, an evening cocktail, or relax and read in one of the rockers. Enjoy the family oriented community in an uncrowded environment.

What makes this house unique

One of the benefits of the house is that you can stay in a smoke-free, pet-free home that provides many amenities that others may not offer. The house has wireless internet, cable, a kitchen with everything you would need to cook, and access to the outside storage shed with beach toys, chairs, bikes, a beach cart, and a Weber charcoal grill.

Nice place

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our stay very much. The chairs, grill, and other items in the downstairs storage room were very nice to use. The kitchen was stocked well. The cleaning crew did not do a very good job, and the previous renters did not wash all the dishes well. But, overall, we had a great time!

Nice location on the west end. Easy walk to the beach. Only thing missing was an umbrella on the deck. Very comfortable house!

Owner's Response: Thank you for the kind words on the house - we try to provide all of the amenities one might need for a great stay. Unfortunately, we tried providing an umbrella for the deck furniture, but after three were destroyed in the first year, we had to give up replacing it!

Perfect for a family vacation

  • 5 of 5

The house layout was great and the location was convenient to the beach. We made full use of the beach wagon that let us get set up early on the beach with chairs and coolers daily. The kitchen counter ice maker saved us numerous trips to Twice the Ice. My nephew loved the lagoon and all the turtles as well as the toy bin. On top of all that on day 2 of our trip my sister in law lost her prescription sunglasses in the surf, they were recovered by a stranger and put on the beach stairs for us to find. I doubt such a kind act ever happens at other beaches.

Overall, we highly recommend for a family vacation. We had no complaints.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the kind words! Yes, we added a counter-top ice maker since previous comments from renters indicated the freezer unit could not produce enough. We are glad that you made full use of the "extra" things we provide our guests, like the beach wagon and beach chairs. We hope to see you next year!

Great beach home!

  • 4 of 5

My family just returned from a week long vacation and everyone of us LOVED the property. Having a swimming pool(s) as well as the ocean was a big hit. Both were within 4 minute walks of the house. The area was extremely quiet and our two teenage girls were able to enjoy the freedom of riding the bikes that were provided throughout the community because we felt very safe in allowing them. This house really has everything you need for the beach! We wanted for nothing (well we brought our own beach umbrella because we know from experience sunburns are not fun). The house had a counter ice maker which was a nice surprise but we never used it - the ice trays in the freezer were plenty for us. Being so close to the house we didn't always pack our lunch we'd just walk back, eat and return to the beach or pool. Our 5 year old grandson loved the resident toy bin and even contributed some of his so the next boy could have fun! A huge highlight was how spacious the house was allowing everyone to have their own space. Furniture was very comfy and the house is decorated in perfect beach theme but not cheesy. There's some beautiful art pieces. Having the outside shower and separate changing area was nice as was the hammock and hose for washing off the beach equipment. The only negative and this isn't the house nor the owners fault - previous renters don't always appreciate things and it was evident with who used the charcoal grill last (didn't clean it out; of the charcoal ash or the fallen hamburger) and the poor frying pans - they met some very unkind cooks that we had to show them some love by cleaning out (literally) scrambled egg remnants (truly caked on the entire frying pans like they never washed them - just put them back in the cabinet). Again, that's just a disrespectful renter and a cleaning crew that probably should check these areas for the next renters. Tons of Tupperware for food storage was AWESOME! When the property description speaks to the turtles and ducks behind the house they're not kidding - we all LOVED feeding the turtles, ducks, birds and crabs both morning and night all week. We had as many as 40 turtles at any given time. Our grandson became a turtle lover and a boogie board surfer all in a week's time (turned 5 at the beach too; he said best birthday yet!). Thank you for the wonderful memories. We returned home (Virginia) refreshed, suntanned and full of lots of fun times!

Owner's Response: Thank you for writing my house advertisement for me! Yes, we find that our guests really appreciate all of the extras we include in the furnishings (pots, Tupperware, ice maker, beach wagon, toys). Usually our guests take very good care of everything, but, as you found, sometimes they do not, and the cleaning service cannot check everything every week. We hope to have you back next yer!

Overall we had a good stay.

  • 3 of 5

It's never good to be the first renters of the season. First the good - the house has plenty of room with nice amenities. The extra beach chairs and bikes were a huge hit with the kids. The kitchen had everything you need to enjoy your stay and all was is great working condition. Second, the not so good - unfortunately the air conditioning for the second floor didn't work, but the 24 hour assistance help (Zach) was very responsive and was able to fix the problem within the next day. Next, they never got the ice machine in the freezer fixed during our stay which was OK, I guess, because bags of ice could be bought 5 minutes away. I will say that if you have issues walking up and down a lot of stairs this place might not be best. My wife, kids and I didn't have any issues at all, but the elderly in our group struggled a bit. Sorry to note that the "Owners" of the adjacent house had two very loud dogs who barked about every time we came in and out of the house. They also had their college kids and their friends visiting which made for some late nights if you are a light sleeper. BUT you can never pick your neighbors. Overall it's a nice house with a short walk to the beach.

Owner's Response: I am sorry to hear of the problems with the AC and icemaker. Unfortunately, I had not tested the AC before the season started (no reason to run it!), but I heard it was fixed quickly. We have a local realtor handle the problems that may crop up, so the problems should have been addressed immediately. Nearly all the houses on Ocean Isle Beach are on stilts and have stairs - few have elevators, too. The high rises are better at accommodating those with limited mobility. As you rightly observe, it is difficult to choose who will be in the place next to the house on any given weekend :-( Nonetheless, you did find the house spacious and provided many amenities that made it a home. I hope you would consider us again.
