Cozy and comfortable

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at Pookela. The house is very well equipped and everything functioned well. Mark was available and friendly. The only downside is that the house lacks a table to eat at.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the review! Yes... there is no formal dining room but rather a four seater table on the covered deck and bar seating for three at the kitchen island. But... major renovations planned for this summer including major updates to the house and an addition on the north side for a dining room with stunning views and seating for eight! updates will be posted to: www.PookelaParadise.com Aloha, Mark, Owner.

A lovely place and a lovely stay!

  • 4 of 5

This was our second (and certainly not last) visit to Maui.

Mark's house was very convenient to pretty much everything we wanted to do and see.

The deck is large and covered, so even when it was raining, we had a comfortable place to sit and enjoy the weather. One thing; there are many spiderwebs along the side of the deck along the roof. Do NOT destroy them. They are Orb Weaver spiders and are completely harmless to people. What they do, however, is keep the place free of mosquitos. So please, leave them be.

The place was quiet and comfortable. The internet goes out from time to time, but you have to remember that Maui is an island in the pacific, nothing is going to be perfect (except the weather ;-) )

If you have the chance, by all means, make staying at Pookela Paradise a priority!

upcountry hideaway

  • 5 of 5

Comfy three bedroom, two bath upper apartment with ocean view. One bath is "ensuite" other is in the hallway between bedrooms. Third bedroom is more of an office, but has a daybed which looks comfortable enough for sleeping. Office also has a Mac desktop for guest use if you wanted to leave your laptop at home. You can walk to Makawao and it's a short drive to Paia. Paia has a fine natural food store (as big as many in cities on the mainland) with very reasonable prices (even for Hawaii). There is also a Foodland a couple of miles away. Most everything you would need to make this home is provided. The owners kitty came to greet us every morning. She is a very friendly kitty who made me miss my cats less. I would definitely stay here again when visiting Maui.

Has great potential but is badly in need of updating.

  • 2 of 5

The location works very well to explore Up Country. Makawao is a very interesting place as far as a base of travel operations. However, the house could really use some updating both inside and outside to improve aesthetics and functionality. Owner is a very nice fellow but the gas grill was not functional and I repaired the handle on the oven door myself so we could use the oven. Would not rent the location again until some updating has been completed.

Owner's Response: The gas grille was replaced with a smaller electric grille which is accurately described as such in the listing. I wish I had know the oven door handle was broken and I would have had it fixed prior to the guest's arrival. The oven was apparently functional, just the handle was broken. There is a major renovation planned for this house this summer. It's gorgeous inside but the outside siding won't be replaced until the renovation. The pricing will go up to around double the current rates once complete, making this house a bargain at it's current rates for a 3 bedroom, 2 bath dwelling.

Close to Natural Attractions

  • 4 of 5

This location was perfect for getting to the road to Hana and sunrise at Haleakala quickly. It was less crowded than the other side of the island, and we didn't have to compete much with lots of other tourists. Even though it isn't right on the beach, it is close enough that it was easy to just drive right out to numerous different parts of the island.

Upcountry Foodies

  • 4 of 5

Excellent location for upcountry farm tours, drives to Haleakala, and meals at some quality restaurants. If Makawao is not on your list of restaurants try them out! Less crowded, more affordable and fabulous. No cookie cutter Maui in upcountry. Branch out - you will be glad you did. Our lodgings were newly remodeled and very comfortable. Mark was attentive and even let us check in early. There is a visiting kitty who makes herself at home if you welcome her. Very nice amenities and a 20 minute drive from the airport.
