Dangerous staircase overshadowed what would have been a 6 out of 10, OK Cabin

  • 1 of 5

My family and I stayed over New Years 2018. From our first impressions, we were all a bit underwhelmed with the cabin; in a nutshell, it is a small, one bathroom, no frills, everything aged, place to sleep. If you are planning to use it as a place to sleep and eat breakfast, without the expectation of entertaining or doing much more in the cabin, it is OK at best; as long as you don't use the upstairs.

However, the staircase is dangerous at best, and life threatening at worst. My wife and I stayed in the downstairs bedroom, my two daughters and my son's girlfriend stayed in upstairs bedroom on the left, and my Dad and son stayed in the upstairs bedroom on the right.

The stairs in this cabin are extremely narrow, and some of the steps are not level; the steps are covered by an old worn out carpet. Their is a rail attached to one wall, but it does not extend the whole length of the steps.

My oldest daughter was the first one to slip and slide from the mid staircase to the bottom, painfully hitting every step with her tailbone. She was almost too sore to ski the next day, and gave up on the second day of skiing because of her bruising. My oldest daughter is a rock gym climber, and has good balance and is in good shape. My 74 year old Dad was the second one to fall down the steps; he slipped two thirds of the way down and fell face forward. He was crumpled at the foot of the steps with his face against the wall and his legs bent backwards. I picked him up and sat him on the couch to recover. The third casualty was my younger daughter; she is an ex-gymnast and an avid athlete. She had almost an identical accident as my dad, falling face forward and crumpling up at the bottom of the steps. My oldest daughter fell for a second time, my son's girlfriend fell, and then my dad fell down the steps on the last day of our stay. My son was the only one who did not have an accident on the stairs; after his girlfriend fell down, the two of them decided to sleep downstairs on the couch. I know we are not the only ones who had this problem, we looked through the guest book and found illustrations kids had left of different family members falling down the steps. We tried calling to complain, but the office was not staffed on new years day.

I would never stay here again. this was the worst experience in the 19 years we have rented homes in Tahoe.

Owner's Response: Response from the home owner Dan... Sorry for your less than Happy New Year’s experience. While acknowledging the stairs might present a challenge at time, these are universally referred to as “Tahoe Classics”. These 1950’s and 60’s cabins lack many of the conveniences of modern day construction, yet that’s one of the charms that brings visitors back year after year. Just as with the the potential for falling ice, slippery walks and wild-life visitation at the property, notices regarding the stairs are posted at the top and bottom of the stairwell. In addition to the standard handrail present, the carpeting on the stairs has extra heavy duty padding on the run and none on the rise to provide the maximum tread width and protection and the wall at the bottom of the stairwell has also been padded and carpeted for occupant protection in the unlikely event of a fall. While your experience might imply differently, hundreds of guests have made thousands of trips up and down these stairs over the years with very few incidents. Thank you for visiting one of Lake Tahoe’s classic cabins.

Owner's Response: Thank you very much for your feedback. The owner came up personally and replaced all of the pots and pans with a brand new set. It is good to hear you had a nice experience. Please let us know when you would like to come back.

Feels like a very old hotel room with a kitchen

  • 2 of 5

This is a charming, old house with a lot of potential to earn a much greater rating. While it's dated, it is cozy. However, the cheapest quality toilet paper and face tissue, scratchy plain white towels, and limited amenities reduce the hominess drastically. People rent homes for their vacations in order to get a more homey feeling. If the owners/management company would just spend a couple extra dollars on higher quality paper products, include some plastic wrap and aluminum foil in the kitchen so it's easier to store leftovers in the fridge, invest in some nicer quality linens, and include a hairdryer in the bathroom, then the house wouldn't feel so much like an old hotel room with a kitchen. These suggested slight upgrades would make me want to return. As it is now, the likelihood that I would rebook this home is slim to none.
