Northwoods Retreat on Bad Medicine: Prime swimming, watersports and snowmobiling

Sleeps8
Bedrooms 2

Space 1,536 sq. ft.
Property type cabin
Minimum Stay 3 - 7 nights

Overview

About the property

This is a unique property on pristine Bad Medicine Lake! Once the owner's cabin of 'Red Top Resort,' a three-cabin property active since the 1930's, it has been converted into a northwoods-style year-round lakehouse while retaining its rustic charm.

The house features two bedrooms and two bathrooms, two fireplaces, a full kitchen, a living room, and an all-season porch. The all-season porch has a pull out couch for additional overnight guests (this is practically on the water and the best opportunity to hear the loons while you sleep!). The unfinished basement has a washer and dryer for your use, and a ping-pong table for those not-so-nice days or evening entertainment. There is also a pool table.

The kitchen includes an oven, stove, microwave, and refrigerator/freezer. Other small appliances and cookware, serveware and eating utensils are also included. Guests must bring their own food and life jackets.

Lake Information

Bad Medicine Lake is consistently one of the clearest, cleanest lakes in Minnesota. Minnesota Monthly rated it as the best lake for swimming in 2008! It's not uncommon to catch snorkelers and even scuba divers around the lake! Watersports such as tubing, waterskiing, and even sailing are very popular.

Bad Medicine Lake is a great spot for Rainbow Trout and Walleye fishing! It's stocked with Rainbow Trout every year! A public boat launch is only 10 minutes away. Other excellent fishing lakes are easily accessible and close by.

Excellent snowmobile trails are located just off the lake! The trails are groomed, well-maintained, and connect directly to many restaurants, gas stations, and Lake Itasca State Park.

Nearby Activities

Lake Itasca State Park is an approximate 20 minute drive away. Walk across the headwaters of the Mississippi or enjoy excellent biking or hiking trails. Snowmobiling here in the winter is also a lot of fun!

Nearby towns of Park Rapids, MN and Detroit Lakes, MN offer a lot of entertainment for both kids and adults. Fun shopping and good restaurants are easy to find. Park Rapids offers 'Evergreen Fun Park' for the kids, complete with bumper boats, laser tag, mini-golf, and more. Detroit Lakes offers family-friendly activities nearly every weekend.

Great lake but was looking for a quiet get away from the cities

  • 3 of 5

Great lake to be on in the fall. The fall colors were starting to show and had good weather. The 3 stars are mainly for the setting and view of the lake. The cabin was OK but the oven was not fully functional. Our plan was to cook most of our meals but the lack of a fully functioning oven forced us to change those plans. The furniture is dated and smelled musty. Carpet was stained and worn. Bathrooms were not that clean and I admit I'm anal about that. The main issue was all the maintenance going on during our stay. We were looking for a quiet retreat but the owner was there every day painting, nailing and performing other jobs around the property. This also included dragging the small row boat out in the middle of the night and we did not know who it was. It seemed he was living out of the garage and was always around during our stay. We did not feel like we were on our own at all which was what we were looking for.

Owner's Response: Dear Guest, I’m so sorry the stay was not everything you’d been hoping for. We have been doing some property improvements this fall and I apologize that this overlapped with your stay. I wish you had notified me of these disruptions, as I could have helped remedy the situation. As for the cabin, it is older and “lakeworn” and part of a vintage resort - however a bathroom not cleaned appropriately is inexcusable. We do ask our guests checking out to help with the cleaning as part of our rental agreement and I’m sorry this was not done prior to your stay. If you’d like to discuss further, please contact me.

Perfect Get-away!

  • 5 of 5

Very nice. Loved the property and the lake. It was a perfect get-away for my family. The lake is beautiful and the cabin has the perfect amount of space for a family of five. Very peaceful too.

The only thing that I would suggest is getting a bigger bed.

Ideal lake experience

  • 5 of 5

Brought the grandchildren for a lake experience and was not disappointed. Beautiful location, comfortable accommodations with nice swimming beach for kids and good fishing for smallmouth bass off the dock. The owner Steve is very hospitable and gave us rides around the lake on his boat. Highly recommended!

Lake home with lots of personality

  • 5 of 5

The home was very clean and comfortable. We felt at home there right away. It was a great fall get away that we will always remember. it's chilly in the North woods this time of year so the fireplace was wonderful. Without it, the heating system kept us warm and cozy.

The owners were very responsive, but we only had one question, and needed them for nothing else. We would come back to this little slice of heaven anytime.
