About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms + Office, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

Our sunny, secluded Oakland Hills home is perched high in the hills with a front deck providing wonderful views of Marin County, San Francisco, the Bay Bridge and the Golden Gate Bridge. We also have a private back patio with a 4-person cedar hot tub.

The front deck and entry of the house is reached by 18 stairs with two landings. The house has hardwood floors, a dining room (seats 6) and living room with floor-to-ceiling windows with views, a wood-burning fireplace, a modern kitchen with granite countertops.

The two upstairs bedrooms each have queen-sized beds, and the downstairs bedroom has both a queen-sized bed and a twin bed. The main bathroom has a bathtub with shower. The master bedroom has an adjoining office, and these rooms have French doors opening to the back patio and hot tub. The master bedroom also has its own bathroom with stall shower. The house is approximately 1500 square feet.

There are many books and paintings throughout the house.

You can reach San Francisco in 20-30 minutes by car or public transportation, and the village of Montclair, with its cafes, shops and a Sunday farmers' market, is only a 2-minute drive or a 20-minute (hilly) walk from our house. Berkeley, with its great university and wonderful restaurants, is only a 10-minute drive.

This neighborhood of Oakland is called Montclair. It's in the hills, and although close to city life in Oakland, Berkeley and San Francisco, it's quite green and natural here, with many trees and birds and hiking trails.

Keywords: Montclair, views, decks, hot tub

About Janet den Breejen

We are Kees and Janet. We've lived in the beautiful Bay Area for over 30 years. We've been dividing our time between our Montclair home and our cabin in Yuba County, California, for the past eight years. We have two grown sons, one living in New York and one in San Francisco, and a 4 year old granddaughter and 1 year old grandson.

Kees is Dutch, born in Delft, who moved to Canada as a child and then to California. He is fluent in Dutch and leads a local Dutch meetup group. He is retired from the San Francisco Chronicle, having worked as a graphic artist, and is now a painter. Janet is a California native. She has recently retired and now works part-time as a freelance index editor for a legal publishing company. Both Kees and Janet love to travel.

Janet den Breejen purchased this house in 2007

Why Janet den Breejen chose Oakland

The benefits of this property include the view of San Francisco Bay and Golden Gate and Marin. A secluded setting but is centrally located, 5 minutes from Highway 13 to Berkeley (10 min), San Francisco (30 min) and Downtown Oakland (20 min), Marin County (40 min) Pacific Ocean at SF (1 hr). We are close to many miles of hiking in regional parks nearby. Swimming at nearby Lake Temescal. Near many charming shopping districts with excellent restaurants. Near the University of California at Berkeley (20 min).

What makes this house unique

We enjoy walking our chocolate lab, Charlie, on his daily route, a half hour loop through the neighborhood. We like the aroma of the bay and eucalyptus trees and the fog clearing from the valleys. We often encounter does with fawns, Steller jays and red-tailed hawks and sometimes wild turkeys.

Wonderful home in the hills with fabulous view of downtown SF, the Bay and Oakland

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for 2 months when our first grandbaby arrived, over August, September and October. Janet and Kees really opened their home up to us, we felt very welcome and also felt very much ‘at home’ here. The kitchen is set up wonderfully, it had everything needed for family dinners. We had many family dinners out on the great deck overlooking downtown SF as well as inside at the table. The neighborhood where the home is located is fantastic - restaurants, breakfast spots, shops and 2 grocery stores. From the house, it’s easy to get to San Francisco by car or BART. The homeowners graciously included a booklet with everything we needed to figure out where to go and what to do.

We were there during a heatwave as well, and it does get quite hot inside late in the afternoon, though on a normal day though it feels good and there is no need to use the heater. We are from Florida, so we are not used to such cool/cold mornings and we loved having the windows open with the fresh air blowing through. Overall our stay was great and we look forward to staying in this wonderful home again so we can take advantage of the terrace overlooking the Bay!

Great place to stay away from San Francisco!! Good view of the bay!!

Overall the house was nice!! We went the week they had a heat wave. It got a little warm in the house in the afternoon. No air conditioning. Had to use the fans to help cool down at night. The basement had a musty smell to it. The hot tub was nice. We cooked breakfast every morning. The kitchen was set up nice.

It Felt Like Home!

  • 5 of 5

My son's graduation from grad school brought us to the Bay Area from Hawaii in May for 6 nights. While I'm leery about renting a place unseen, the location and the great VRBO reviews convinced me to give it a try. Nestled on the hillside, the home comfortably slept 6 adults. While the property is in average condition, it has lots of charm and character, with a fantastic view of the Bay area (the sunsets were spectacular!). The home is clean, well maintained, and very well equipped, including a bbq grill, ping pong table, and hot tub. We felt "at home. Unfortunately, we did not get the chance to meet Janet and Kees (loved his paintings throughout the house), but when we arrived and opened the front door, we were greeted with a welcoming note and a bottle of wine from them. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would definitely return. My only regret is not being able to spend more time at the house (we had a busy schedule)...to watch the squirrels run across the wooden railing and to leisurely sit on the lanais (front and back) where nature is at your fingertips. I would highly recommend this place to my family, friends and business associates!

Stunning views in Oakland Hills.

  • 4 of 5

My husband and I rented this home twice for two different family weddings. We had our children there with their significant others and our granddaughter. The space was perfect. It was spacious, the kitchen was well equipped, the outdoor area was calming and provided great views. Our granddaughter loved the hot tub. The beds were comfortable and warm. Our hosts were gracious and left us wine and.instructions to use anything we needed in the kitchen. They were responsive to a couple of questions I had during our stay. They made it very easy to check in and out and left us with a detailed book about the home, area, recycling, etc. The only criticism I have is that the one bedroom is in a basement and it was a little damp and musty. I would definitely rent this again.

Great home away from home. Comfortably equipped with every amenity necessary for our 9 days stay.

  • 4 of 5

Our family of 6 adults and 1 baby stayed for 9 nights. The layout of the house worked well for the most part. A baby gate was necessary to block steep staircase leading to downstairs room. The common areas ( living rm, dining rm, kitchen) are comfortably furnished and equipped with all the comforts of home. This rental provides everything from Wifi to kiddie toys to laundry detergent. Beds were comfortable, bathrooms clean. Downstairs room a bit musty smelling. Full size washer and dryer convenient!

The surrounding outdoor space is pleasantly landscaped with flowers and has several seating areas on the deck and patio to enjoy views of the Bay and for smokers. We used the ping pong table but the wooden hot tub was not what we expected.

Overall, this is a lovely house to rent. You feel like the owners really opened their HOME to you. We were welcomed with a bottle of California wine sitting by the notebook containing all the information needed for our stay.

Purpose of our visit was to attend a family reunion so the area is familiar to us. We all enjoyed viewing the beautiful sunsets, the fog rolling in, the landmarks across the Bay. Thanks for the memories!
