‘Dragonwood Castle’ 3BR Maine Home on Waterfront!

Space 2,200 sq ft
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 4 - 7 nights

About the property

Prospect Harbor, Maine

Sitting back 100 feet off the Atlantic Ocean, Dragonwood Castle offers 200 feet of water frontage with glorious sunset reflections across the bay onto the Prospect Harbor Lighthouse. Inside its 2,100 square-feet are 3 decorative levels of living space, plus a small turret that overlooks the ocean with clear open views. With 3 bedrooms, a den, and 2.5 bathrooms, this property offers so much more than just comfortable sleeping accommodations, it takes you on an adventure!

As you approach the drawbridge-like wooden walkway that leads to the front door, you'll notice that this whimsical yet solid 12-sided house is built of local natural materials, including hand split shakes, and rough-honed granite, which was used to make the full-story non-working fireplace, shower stall in the main floor bathroom, as well as a large supporting column in the center of the home. One flight up the stair tower will take you to the 2 loft-style bedrooms, one of which boasts a queen-sized bed, double futon, and crib. The other half of this loft area, accessed either through the previous bedroom or through the shared full bathroom and laundry room, contains 2 twin beds and 1 sleeping alcove.

A number of diversions are at hand in the Castle, from delightful reading and napping alcoves to plush lounging sofas and 3-story windows, from which you and your travel companions can have fun spying on the bald eagles that have taken up residence nearby. You might also find yourself fascinated by the dioramas in several of the windows, depicting medieval scenes with castles, dragons, and the like. Each of the accommodations offer fabulous views to the exterior through 3-story windows, as well as over-the-railing views of the interior down to the lower level television and lounging area. You'll find the home's third floor is one large airy and open bedroom featuring a king-sized bed, toddler bed, and half bath. It also has access to a cozy exterior balcony with lovely water views. This is also where one can access the turret, which also boasts expansive views.

While the house is cozy and comfortable, you'll quickly discover that there are many things to see and do once you head out. Enjoy taking leisurely strolls around the nearby walking loop through the woods, or wander down to the beach, where you'll find great spots for kayaking and swimming. The cove is protected by a granite ridge, making the rocks smooth and the water calmer and warmer, yet still Maine-like. Other highlights near Dragonwood Castle worth checking out include the Schoodic Arts Festival, performances at Hammond Hall Performing Arts Center, the Winter Harbor Lobster Festival, Schoodic Acadia National Park, the Grindstone Neck Public 9-hole Golf Course, and the International Sculpture Symposium, where you can visit the outdoor studio and watch the artists as they sculpt. However you choose to spend your time during your stay, this is one vacation you won't forget anytime soon!

Was a great getaway and vacation

  • 4 of 5

The property was what we expected based on the pictures we saw. We were really impressed by the beds and how they slept along with having all of the essentials. The full kitchen had everything we needed to cook a few meals. Also, plenty of towels and they had a lot of bug spray which was needed. Very easy access to the rock beach and the kids loved it there. We made a small fire on the rock beach and had smores. The only reason we didn't give this a five star rating is the furniture smelled. When we laid or sat on the furniture it would stay in our clothes. We had to find some blankets to put on the lounge seat as that was a primary spot for us to relax and enjoy the views. The parking was interesting also. If you have more than 2 cars you are in trouble. The owner was very nice to talk to and accommodating if needed. It also made it easy that we didn't have a checklist or anything we had to do before we left.

Wonderful location

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at Dragonwood. The kitchen is spacious and well-stocked. The house is a bit musty smelling and there is not a great area to gather other than the kitchen. The views are magnificent!

Memorable, Unique, Charming, Beautiful and More

  • 5 of 5

We had an absolutely fantastic stay at Dragonwood Castle. The property is picturesque and so quiet and relaxing. There is no traffic noise whatsoever, given the very private location. We were greeted by the sounds of ocean waves lapping on the shore/rocks, combined with the gentle sounds of a bell bouy and birdsong. The only motors we heard were the occasional lobster boat checking traps, which added to the ambiance. At night, there is no light contamination other than the lighthouse and the stargazing is wonderful. There is a quiet path out to the rocky beach, and we never saw another person anytime we were out there. It was very private. The house itself is amazing. You truly feel like you are staying in a castle. It is very warm, inviting, and whimsical. The views from the house are amazing, especially the sunrise from the third floor bedroom, with its almost 360 degree view. One of my favorite, unique features was the little reading nook on the second floor (there is also one on the first floor). There is a spiral staircase that leads from the kitchen to the second and third floors. The kitchen is wonderful, complete with everything you could need-- coffee maker, fridge, microwave, stove/oven, dishwasher, cookware, utensils, flatware, mugs and glasses. We were very comfortable during our stay. Everything was very clean and in great working order. The owner was absolutely delightful to talk to, and provided us with many great tips for enjoying the area, and also the best local restaurants. Talking with her, I felt like we were staying at a good friend's house. The house is in a great location for exploring the Schoodic side of Acadia, Winter Harbor, and Corea. There is a big shopping area in Elsworth, which is about a half hour away, and is the best place to do your major food shopping. There is a little grocery right around the corner for anything you forget to get in Elsworth. This stay was very unique and memorable. We can't wait to come back, and didn't want to leave. Dragonwood Castle will forever hold a special place in our hearts!

Very unique property left us with wonderful memori

  • 4 of 5

Dragonwood is such a neat place. Each time we looked around we found some new characteristic of the house. The owner was so easy to talk to and was very focused on making sure we knew all there was to know. We had a great time and would definitely recommend the property, especially for folks with children ours were amazed and didn't want to leave. The scavenger hunt in the guest no was a neat touch.

A few tidbits that would've been nice:

Clean the patio of leaves. We did it ourselves but it would've been nice to have it al cleaned off. It also would've been nice for the lawn to have been mowed. Folks should be aware that there is very minimal parking.

Overall a wonderful experience!

Wonderful vacation experience! Gorgeous location, beautifully crafted, well stocked, comfortable home with intricate detail everywhere you look. The owner was very accommodating and helpful, reaching out to me with suggestions of things to do in the area once I told her what our interests were. And the deer grazing on apples in the back yard every morning made it even more special! Looking forward to future visits.

great value for the price

  • 4 of 5

Dragonwood castle is a magical place and we enjoyed our stay very much. The location and view were spectacular as described. You awake to see the sunrise over the water from the third floor bedroom and listen to the waves as you fall asleep. We enjoyed launching our kayak from the front yard. The second floor is more like one big room with a double bed and crib on one half and two twins and a reading/nap nook in the other half. There is not the privacy of two separate bedrooms. Nearby restaurants close by 7 (and stop serving earlier); a late dinner requires a drive -- 30 minutes to Ellsworth or about an hour to Bar Harbor. The kitchen is clean and well stocked, although the spices are old and have lost their piquancy. The house is very clean although there is a musty smell, which adds to the "castle" ambiance, and a few spiderwebs in hard-to-reach places. We would definitely stay here again. It's a great value for the price.
