Your hosts, Mark and Mary Zimmerman are both professional artists, avid students of the history, geology, flora and fauna of the Black Hills. Their house, barn, and their Green Ink Gallery and Studios are located nearby on this same 30 acre original homestead which is surrounded by the Black Hills National Forest.
The Owner purchased this cabin in 1988
Undeniably one of the most beautiful properties in the Black Hills, this serene little valley is a special haven, a place of solace, where it is possible to truly rest, relax, and deeply recharge. This is a place where it is entirely natural to make special memories that will last a lifetime.
This is without a doubt the coziest cabin we've ever stayed in! Mary and her lovely dog Donner came to check in on us upon arrival, and both she and her husband were extremely warm and accommodating to us. The views were stunning, and they always left the lights on for us when we got back in the evenings. I would recommend this cabin to anyone looking for a relaxing weekend in the hills!
We had high hopes and great expectations when we planned our visit the Black Hills of South Dakota, and I can honestly say the Cabin at Green Mountain surpassed our expectations. The central location allowed us to explore our surroundings at our own pace and enjoy the serenity of this hidden treasure. Mark and Mary made us feel completely at home. I hope we will be fortunate enough to return in the future.
The Cabin at Green Mountain exceeded our expectations. The location is perfect and relaxing - we spent every evening sitting on the porch and listening to the wonderful surroundings. Mary was so welcoming and made us feel like we'd made the perfect choice for our spring get away. The layout of the cabin is very nice and everything you need is accounted for. The original artwork from the owners is a great touch. We've already recommended the location to friend's of ours and plan to revisit again in the Fall.
The cabin and property were simply amazing and my cousin and I had a quiet and relaxing weekend away. Mary was great to talk with, Mark was sick and we were not able to meet him. I only wish we would have had time to see their studio - and more time at the cabin as the weekend went way too quick!
We are a retired couple who has just turned 60. In the past year, we each lost our mom. One very suddenly, the other after a very long illness. We were looking for a place to get away, where we could be quiet and peaceful...but still explore and learn about a part of the country that is very different from our own. The Cabin at Green Mountain turned out to be the perfect retreat. The setting is serene. The view is of a beautiful pasture with two horses grazing, and often several deer. The cabin is rustic and cozy, and as previous reviewers have stated, it is spotlessly clean and well-stocked. But for us, the thing that made it different was the touch of the artist-owners. Their artwork is on display throughout the cabin. Mark's abstracts, and Mary's block prints and drawings add character that is missing from other rentals. Along with the choice of furniture, fabrics, rugs, bed linens...these are the things that made the cabin special for us. We spent each day exploring the Black Hills and its surrounding parks and monuments, and each evening cooking a great meal and sitting by the fire. Mark was a great host, and while we didn't meet Mary, I know she is a special person as well. We feel quite fortunate to have experienced this cabin. Thank you.
Such a welcoming, beautiful place. So glad we found it for our weekend get away. Loved everything about it. Highly recommend, and we will definitely be going back! :) :)
Mary and Mark are wonderful hosts! We spent the new year's weekend at the cabin and it is beautiful. The lights were on and welcoming and the cabin had the fire going for our arrival. The cabin is very charming and cozy. The last morning of our stay after speaking with Mary and Mark we discovered that the artwork in the cabin is created by them and their art studio is in the barn. It did snow quite a bit the last evening that made our trek out quite interesting but Mary and Mark were helpful and we did make it to the highway :)
Rapid City is close enough to be convenient but far enough away that you get the full experience of the Black Hills. If you enjoy Deadwood, it is a nice drive as well and a fun place to be for New Year's eve.
If you are tied to your technology you may struggle a bit here. We have Verizon and cell service was nonexistent. Bring DVDs as you will not be able to stream videos and there are only 2 TV channels. But what a way to bond! Watch DVDs with your loved ones and play games! If you are there in the winter, bring warm clothes and go explore. I am sure it would be a completely different experience in the warmer months but the winter months seem to be very nice.
Getting away from it all, experiencing quiet.
