About this property

Charming Kaloko Mountain Cottage with hot tub - private,secluded and cozy!!

Wonderful, private and cozy cottage up in the forest of Kaloko Mauka ( directly above Kona town!). Situated on 5 acres and 2700 foot elevation, this stand alone cottage is surrounded by beautiful ohia trees and is at least 300 feet from the main residence. The owners live further down on the property. Wild chickens and native birds abound.
Kaloko is a special place with cooler weather than you will find down in town. It's nice to retreat up here after a hot day at the beach. Afternoon/evening rain does occur and it provides perfect sleeping weather. Evenings/mornings in the winter months can be cool, so we recommend light sweaters/socks if you get cold.
We are located on Mount Hualalai right above Kailua Kona. This one bedroom house has a small deck on the front and a larger deck with yard in the back. Nice and secluded. Perfect for the couple wanting a romantic getaway!
10 minutes to the airport, beaches and shops. Hike the mountain trail, birdwatch or just relax on the lanai! .

The cottage was great and location was wonderful! The host was very communicative and even asked us if we'd like the lights on for if we were arriving after dark. It was lovely getting to birdwatch from the lanai and we loved falling asleep to the sound of many coqui frogs. We would certainly stay here again!

This is a beautiful little cottage with all the amenities you need for a comfortable stay. We stayed 4 weeks and enjoyed every minute. The hot tub on the back patio was a plus. Caroline and Scott were friendly hosts. Close to the airport and many beaches. Can’t go wrong with this place.

Wonderful mountain cottage

We loved our stay here! The location was amazing - it felt like we were staying in the jungle. The cottage had everything we needed and some nice extra details (such as the mattress warmer for those chilly mountain mornings). If you’re thinking about staying here, do yourself a favor and book it!

We had an incredible experience with both VRBO and our host, Caroline. Just one day before our stay, a major storm hit Hawaii, causing widespread flooding and knocking out electricity in the area. With no power, we would have been without basic necessities like refrigeration, lighting, the hot tub, and even the ability to charge our phones—it simply wouldn’t have been a safe or enjoyable stay.Caroline was incredibly understanding and gracious, allowing us to cancel free of charge with no penalties at the last minute. That level of kindness and flexibility made all the difference for us. Because of her, we were able to quickly secure alternative accommodations and focus on our wedding without added stress.We are so grateful for her compassion and highly recommend both this host and VRBO for their support during an unexpected and stressful situation.

This cottage was away from it all, which was what we wanted! Cozy, quiet, cute! Our host was so friendly and responsive, giving us great suggestions for restaurants and things to do! Everything we needed and wanted was there! We would not hesitate to stay there again! Highly recommend!

A beautiful place in the rain forest.

We really enjoyed this cabin the rain forest above Kona. The hot tub was a treat and the space very quiet and comfortable. Kona was only about 15 minutes away. Since it was winter, it was a little cool.

Absolutely sublime. Quiet, tons of vegetation, birds, cool, and restful. Bring at least a good sweater and a pair of slacks for early am and eve when it can get chilly. A very cozy warm home. You’ll love it!

Charming, Romantic , Convenient Cottage

We had an amazing time ! The cottage is clean, comfortable and charming. The surrounding landscape is absolutely beautiful. Very quiet and secluded but a surprisingly easy and convenient drive to restaurants, grocery , beaches etc.!!! Caroline is so kind with wonderful, easy communication. We loved the coziness and variety of tropical plants surrounding the cottage. The cottage is comfortable and bright, loved sitting on the porch in morning and at night where we could do some bird watching. We didn't use the hot tub, just not our thing. Host was very welcoming and responsive when needed anything. We would stay here again!

Our third stay!

Over the last 5 years we have visited this property, or the cabin 3 times. It's in a great location, near everything we like to do on the Big Island. We like the higher elevation, cooler and away from the bustle of Kona, but close enough for easy access to snorkeling. Scott and Caroline have been the best; friendly, helpful, there when we needed them, but gave us our space as well. Perfect hosts! We will be back for visit number 4 at some point in the future.

We chose this property for the location, but the cottage's tranquil beauty and comfortable accommodations were a big bonus! Adding little personal touches like the fresh flowers, hand written welcome notes and hand sewn quilt on the bed made it so inviting. The cottage was well equipped with just about anything you might need. Kona Mountain Cottage

I cannot begin to describe how much we enjoyed the cottage.. Absolutely everything we could have possibly needed was there. We loved the privateness of the cottage. It felt like we were miles from everything yet access to the beach, grocery stores, dining in Kailua, etc.. was only 15-20 minutes away. It is the perfect island getaway for two.. I’ve stayed at other vacation rentals on the island but this has by far been the best. From the cool temperatures, beautiful foliage and easy access to everything, I can’t imagine a better place to stay. We will most definitely stay here on our next trip to the Big Island.

Serenity with Nature at its Finest

The entire process from booking to checking in and out was as smooth as silk. Caroline & Scott are exceptional hosts, everything was explained in the letter with the keys, right down to the “what to do if this happens”. If you love being sung to sleep by frogs each night-look no further. The private hot tub came in handy our second night. The washing machine & dryer allowed us to pack light enough to carry on to our next island destination. The dehumidifier was an awesome addition as I was concerned about this-like said before they’re excellent hosts and have thought of everything.

Cozy Cottage

We loved this place! The cottage setting is an almost surreal Hawaiian cloud forest awash in lush vegetation and colorful flowers but only a 10 minute drive from Kailua-Kona. Caroline provided detailed directions with pics so we had no problem finding the place but the paved mountain road is a bit steep so make sure your rental car is up for the challenge. The house is comfortable for 2 adults and features a well stocked kitchen, plenty of bath linens, and a commercial grade washer & dryer set. We did not use the hot tub. We thoroughly enjoyed our 6 night stay.

Peaceful Stay

Great place for some quiet time. Surrounded by a beautiful rain forrest.. Very clean and had everything we needed. Water pressure a bit low in the shower, but not an issue. Plenty of hot water. Loved walking the area in the am. Our flight was delayed and it's very dark in this area, so had a rough time finding the place. Didn't realize at first we had to go through a gate. Have to get out to open and close. Not bad, but it rained a lot. Great place to get some R&R.

Private little paradise

Scott & Caroline, Thank you so much for having us stay in this little slice of heaven while we were on our elopement/honeymoon. This little gem was the absolute perfect, off the beaten path, romantic, relaxing, secluded getaway for the first part of our vacation. We loved the girls (the chickens) coming to say good morning and would love to come stay again! Next time we will think ahead and make sure to grab the beach gear that we didn’t think about until after we decided to go to the beach. Thank you thank you thank you from the bottom of our hearts! We love the Big Island and Kaloko-Mauka is the most beautiful mountain neighborhood with lush forest. After a hot day in Kona town, nothing is as refreshing as heading up mauna for some cooler weather! Native birds, trails, and acreage gives lots of privacy and serenity.
