About The Owner

We are a family of 4 who live in the states. I'm a nurse and when I take a vacation I really need to de-stress, this home is the perfect place for that. I came to Merida on vacation and fell in love with the Yucatan. The city of Merida is beautiful and safe, the gulf villages are quiet and wonderful to visit.

The Owner purchased this house in 2007

Why The Owner chose Chelem

Chelem is easy to get to from Merida. it has the laid back lifestyle yet all amenities are in the home or nearby in Progresso or Merida. The cost of living is very affordable, the weather is great and the people are very friendly. I have always wanted to be near the beach and I'm able to live right on the beach and achieve my dream. This house was purchased in 2007 after a total renovation.

What makes this house unique

Waking up in the morning and having the ocean as your first view is priceless. Equally priceless is ending the day on the terrace watching the sunset. The sunrise is equally beautiful from the rooftop terrace.

I have eaten great fish in Progresso, visited ruins and pyramids, gone shopping at ultramodern shopping centers in Merida, watched Flamingos from my terrace, wandered through small villages eating great food and meeting wonderful people, walked along the beach for hours gathering shells and meeting one single soul. This home is a small piece of paradise

Wonderful Stay

  • 4 of 5

Wonderful place – very spacious and clean with 3 generously sized bedrooms, a covered terrace and a rooftop terrace to enjoy the ocean views. Two of the bedrooms have ensuite bathrooms. The place is very secure with security doors that can be locked and still leave the patio doors open facing the ocean and triple gated at the front. The location is about 2 km from Chelem. While I rented a car for the month, there is available public transit including minivans that run regularly from Chelem to Progreso. Beach is on the small side but swimming is excellent with shallow waters. There is no air-conditioning but there are plenty of fans and the ocean breezes kept us comfortable. Kitchen is fully supplied although some items required replacing for example a non-stick frypan. The owner and property manager were both extremely helpful and responsive to our request for additional bedding, drinking glasses etc.

As previous reviews have mentioned, the beds are extremely hard. We made do with using chair cushions and bedding as padding but they really do need to do something like memory foam or new mattresses (there are no boxsprings). Pillows were tiny so I bought new standard sized ones at the Walmart in Merida. Bathroom mats and towels were also very worn out so I bought new ones.

The BBQ is a very old and rusty coal table top one and we did not use it. The owner mentioned at time of booking that there was access to Netflix however despite valiant attempts by the property manager, it could not be connected. It isn’t clear whether this is temporary or permanent. Wifi is decent although I brought a booster to strengthen the signal.

As the house manual notes, the water is not drinkable. However we learned from friends living in Chuburna that it should not even be used for boiling pasta and when washing the dishes, a capful of bleach should be used. I would suggest that the house notes be updated accordingly to reflect the above.

All in all, a very pleasant stay at Casa Ayala.

15 minuted walk into Chelem for fresh Mexican bread in the mornings

Amazing sunrisss over the inner lagoon and down at Puerto Chuburna

Flamingos at inner lagoon at Chuburna

No air con but plenty of fans

House is rough and ready rather than luxury but that is what I like

Owner's Response: Hello Irene, I am very disappointed to hear that you had a bad experience. I would like to address specific points regarding the comments. 1. House water contaminated- The water in Mexico is not potable. You have to buy drinking water. The water from the cistern is for bathing. 2. Bathroom collapse? - One toilet was not flushing well, plumber was called and issue was resolved. Second bathroom was functional at all times. Guest stated that one bathroom was not enough for eight people. The maximum number of guests allowed is six. 3. Cockroaches everywhere- Palmetto bugs are common in the area and they tend to come out during the hottest months of the year. They resemble roaches, but they are not the same. Offer was made to send exterminator and guest refused. 4. Owner very rude- I would like to point out some ways where I bend over backwards for this guest to make her stay a good experience. Every email was replied to quickly, the guest did not have a phone. The house is listed as having no AC, no washer/dryer, no cable. Once the guest checked in she questioned why those amenities were not available. The number of guests in the home were over the maximum allowed, therefore the guest demanded extra items which were provided such: extra hammocks, fans. The reservation was for June 6th to July 31st. Mid-June guest requested to leave in July, I agreed to give a refund for the month of July even though rentals are not refundable mid-stay, the guest declined and instead extended her stay until August 7th. Towards the end of her stay, the guess threatened to write bad review if she was not fully refunded for her entire stay. As always, I appreciate feedback from all guests. My home has been rented on VRBO since 2012 and I strive to provide a pleasant experience for all my guests.

Very Enjoyable!

  • 5 of 5

The location was perfect. We had a car so we got around ok but there was also a lot of local transportation available. Everything was as described and shown in the pictures. The kitchen was equipped with everything we needed. The breeze was much appreciated however, it got pretty windy for a few hours in the afternoon. The internet worked well most of the time. The Smart TV could only get Netflix so we couldn't watch current shows. However, we found a lot of things to do to occupy our time. It was a thoroughly enjoyable time, the weather was great. There were stands along the road selling their version of Coconut Pie which was heavenly!

Lovely Vacation Beach House

  • 4 of 5

We stayed in this beach house for three weeks, and had a great vacation. The roof top was fantastic for sun bathing and catching a breeze, listening to music, watching ships go by, watching the fishermen, watching birds, watching sunsets, watching stars. The beach was a thrill for seashell picking, what a wonderful selection! We felt so at home and so comfortable it was actually hard to leave! Even though the property manager doesn't live in Chelem, she did a great job of taking care of things for us(thanks Ivonne, you were awesome). The day we arrived Ivonne the property manager asked us if we had eaten yet and when we said no, she took us to a fantastic local restaurant La Terracita just a short ways from the house. I would recommend this house to others, I would also stay here again. The only thing we thought we might look for next time is a house with a pool, but only because the Norte's made it difficult to go in the water and apparently this has been an unusual year for so many Norte's. We found the beds hard to get used to, but after a week we adjusted. We love the local people, and also the next door neighbors Theresa and Bill are super wonderful:)

Everything in the listing is accurate -- and the home and location are even better than stated! We stayed for a month and NEVER got bored. Went to Chichen Itza, spent time in both Progreso and Merida -- and just hung out. If you go, don't miss Merida on a Sunday. The streets downtown are closed and everyone is out walking and appreciating the gorgeous weather. Just a 10 minute drive to Progresso where you can purchase your groceries and shopping, and 30 minute drive to Merida where you can experience night life and great authentic Mexican food. The house is clean has all the amenities you need and just a few steps from the beach. The roof top is amazing for watching the sunsets. The owner and the caretaker of the propery are wonderful and very helpful. I would certainly recommend this house to family and friends.

Car: recommended

A bilingual property manager (English & Spanish) is only a phone call away, and will assist you during your stay with things such as local pay as you go cell phone etc...

The lively town of Progreso is 10 minutes away, Progreso has a typical market, many fine restaurants, a lovely malecon, and pier for strolling.

Visit Merida with it's beautiful colonial buildings , parks and cafes. There you will find the major stores like Walmart, Home Depot, MacDonalds, Costco etc...

Take a ride to the Mayan ruins , such as Chizen Itza and Cenotes (underground caves with crystal clear water) for swimming and snorkeling.

Transportation right outside the house can take you to anywhere in the Yucatan without the added expense of a rental car.

The home is very secure with iron works that protect all windows and doors, safely sleep with all windows and doors open & enjoy the wonderful sea breezes.

Escape the cold winters or come for a stress free vacation.
