About Barbara Murphy

Barb has 20 years experience in the restaurant industry. She retired from her position with Le Peep Restaurant in 2010 where she served as a General Manager for 10 years. Providing great customer service was her primary goal and she played an active role in training her employees to assure it. Barb is a Certified Personal Trainer and ran her own women’s boot camp class from 2007-2010 in Houston during her spare time.

John is retired from the Houston Police Department where he served for 28 years. He joined the force in 1982 and after 4 years of working Patrol, he joined the SWAT Team and remained with that division until his retirement in 2010. John has worked with Secret Service and other dignitary protection groups serving four presidents and numerous high profile individuals. He has a thorough understanding of one’s privacy and security and strives to ensure it.

Why Barbara Murphy chose Northwest

John and Barb Murphy are no strangers to the north. John was actually born in Racine, Wisconsin and grew up on the shores of Lake Michigan in Muskegon, Michigan. Barb was raised in northern Michigan on the east shore of Lake Charlevoix in the small town of Boyne City. Career opportunities led them both to Houston separately, where they eventually met, got married and raised a daughter. After 30 years in the big city, it was time to retire. Having spent the latter 10 years searching for the perfect place, and some 10 states later, they ended up in Bayfield on a whim in the summer of 2009. On the advice of a friend, they scouted an area south of Bayfield County. It was a beautiful place but something was missing. One of the locals there suggested visiting Bayfield; so, they packed for a day trip and headed north. Within the first few minutes of arriving they were definitely “Up North”; they knew this was the place: quaint shops; islands; friendly residents; and, of course, the big water - Lake Superior. It was like coming home. With sights set high, they headed back to Houston, sold their home and moved to Bayfield in August of 2010. Their new home and Carriage House Rental is situated on 10 beautifully wooded acres just one mile north of town.

What makes this cottage unique

We are located on 10 wooded acres with a 1/2 mile hike/jog trail that runs along the property with it's own creek. We have wildlife on our property including Black Bear, Bobcat, Deer, Coyote, Wolf, Raccoon, and Fox. Our Carriage house is equipped with all the comforts of home and if you need any special requests, we can have it for you in minutes. You will have a 600 sq ft heated garage where you can store your equipment instead of being one of the many unfortunate visitors that have to keep all their toys on or attached to the vehicles. We are next to the Apostle Islands which is controlled by the National Park Service. You will find Seacaves along the islands and mainland. Kayaking, canoeing and boating is a lifetime experience along the Islands. You can paddle to one of the 21 islands and hike or even camp in areas pristine with nature and solitude. Just keep bear wary!

After experiencing the thousands of acres of nature; walk, ride or drive one mile into town and shop at all the shops or eat at one of many restaurants while looking over Lake Superior and the islands. Want more culture?? Take in a show at the Big Top Chautauqua or at Stage North. You will see famous performers as well as our local artists. Don't forget the Bayfield Apple Festival or the Dog Sled Races or the Bayfield in Bloom or the Fall Harvest Celebration or the Blessing of the Fleet or 'whew!' Just too many things to see and do here in Bayfield. Check out our website for more info and pictures at superiorhorizons.

Wonderful place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

Fantastic place to stay! My daughters had a fabulous time on our first time trip out to the Apostle Islands and Bayfield, WI area. John and Barb were wonderful hosts who were more than accomodating and willing to help us out with our every need/request. John took us out kayaking to the sea caves and provided such a wonderful account of the history of the caves and scampered us through some little caverns that we never would have seen on our own. The property was beautiful, clean and comfortable. We had more than enough amenaties and felt very much "at home" while staying in their beautiful cabin. Thank you so much John and Barbara for a wonderful experience. I've already told my partner that he & I need to make a trip out there together! I'll be back! 5 stars all the way!

Wonderful!!!

  • 5 of 5

This was my second stay at the Carriage House. An amazing fully furnished house nestled in the woods. Close to Bayfield yet far enough to savor the peacefulness of nature. John and Barb are great hosts. Their hospitality and property are no comparison and far outweigh any hotel room I've ever stayed at! If you want a peaceful and enjoyable vacation, the Carriage House is where you need to stay!

Great stay

  • 5 of 5

This is the 5th year we have stayed at the Carriage House for the Point to La Pointe swim. Beautiful accommodations! Absolutely spotless. The addition of a 1/2 bath on the lower level was spot-on. A peaceful and quiet spot. Great hosts that are very familiar with the local area and helpful in terms of things to do and see that aren't where everyone else is heading. Would definitely recommend!

Beautiful place in the woods

  • 5 of 5

We Loved our stay at Superior Horizon Carriage House. The owners thought of every little detail. It was less than 5 minutes from downtown Bayfield. The kitchen was stocked and super clean. The beds were so comfortable. The owners were super nice. They shared all kinds of helpful information about the area. John even showed us around in his Kayaks. It was a great time!

Superior home and helpful hosts

  • 5 of 5

The Carriage House was clean, comfortable, and full of the things one needs when vacationing away from home. We appreciated the washer/dryer unit. John introduced us to sea kayaking, and we paddled with him to the caves. Adventurously, he led us into cracks in the rocks and through both large and small tunnels. The water was calm and the day was beautiful. The town of Bayfield was full of cute shops and delicious eateries. We rented bikes and rode along the Brownstone Trail and took the ferry to Madeline Island. A great stay with fantastic hosts; we highly recommend this property.

great charming guest house with excellent hosts, excellent location from downtown Bayfield WI, clean house ,very hospitable people and resourceful. On top of being our host our great house owner introduce us to Fat tire biking with his great knowledge of the outdoor activities of all kind. He even rented the bikes for both of us from Ashland and brought them to our door . we call this an excellent service . Besides the buisness aspect of it ,we felt like we got a new friends in Bayfield . You could feel the genuine friendship of our host and the connection with the outdoor activities and the protection of the environment . On another note , we loved the town of Bayfield and specially the the cycling group. we will go back for sure Winter and or summer .
