1890's Victorian on Beaufort's Most Beautiful Street

*** Treasure. Savor. Play. Rest. Enjoy.***

You are cordially invited to enjoy a taste of history and charm in the CravenHouse experience. We are delighted to share our home and the beauty that is Beaufort .

Falling in love with Beaufort is something few visitors can resist. We fell under its spell during a Christmas visit and as time went on we had to surrender.

Our home is an expression of the south of the past and yet abides in the present, not conforming, but co-existing with today. The original fireplace mantle and chandeliers live next to the brand new kitchen with its expansive cabinetry and stainless steel appliances. The extraordinary French doors in the front parlor open to a porch immaculately restored to its original design. Custom birch paneling in the den compliment state of the art HDTV & Wi-FI Internet.

Walking upstairs is an experience all its own as one steps onto a staircase ornamented with elaborate original woodwork. Classic iron beds in all three bedrooms upstairs are complimented with brand new Sealy Posturpedic mattresses promising a restful night's sleep after a day of exploring Beaufort . Antique furniture is beautiful and charms every room.

The master bedroom and bath open onto the second story porch, delighting ones senses with the soft touch of sea breezes, the sounds of horse and carriage ride tours passing by, the ringing of church bells dating back to 1720 and the sight of Spanish moss dripping from 300 year old oak trees.

Plantation rockers and beautiful wicker furniture are waiting on both the upstairs porch and screened in porch downstairs as you relax and perhaps think back to a day of walking through this historic neighborhood with its antebellum mansions, ancient churches and glimpses of history until now only read about in books.

Beaufort recently celebrated its 300th birthday. The city’s history is replete with tales of greatness. Once one of the most affluent counties in the United States, Beaufort boasts anecdotes of plantations, cargo and pirate ships as well as tales of occupation by union forces. The tapestry of the town is abundant with the past. Stories from each neighborhood with unique journeys all their own are waiting for you.

No need for a car! Leave your auto in our driveway. Steps away is beautiful downtown Beaufort's waterfront park, with its marina, shopping, dining and breathtaking scenery of the inter-coastal waterway. Daily tours are offered, including water tours, walking tours, and horse drawn carriages. Feeling brave? The nightly “ghost tour” will offer an alternative glimpse into this amazing town.

Why David Sunstrom chose Historic District

The Point neighborhood (also known as the Old Point) is home to some of Beaufort's largest, oldest, and most expensive homes.

This portion of downtown does not follow the major street grid and was once an area where a timber mill operated. Homes in this area range from the impressive mansions that overlook the Beaufort river to Victorian and Queen Anne style homes. Streetscapes, dominated by an impressive live oak canopy and Spanish moss, evoke images of a bygone era.

Best of Beaufort

  • 5 of 5

I currently live in Auckland, New Zealand but I grew up in Beaufort and know the area extremely well. I recently came back for a visit with my family of 4 and chose to stay at this house on Craven Street. It was the best decision of our trip! It is located in a prime position on one of Beaufort's best streets. Not only will you love sitting on the porch looking at the gorgeous historic homes and carriage tours as they pass by, but the friendly neighbors will have you feeling like you belong here permanently. The house has such character and is in the old southern style; yet has all the modern conveniences and is fully stocked with everything you could need for your stay. The house is gorgeous on the inside, but also very kid friendly which was so important with a 4 & 5 year old. You will feel at home. There's also a nice backyard area for the kids to play or to sit out and have dinner and sip tea. The home is centrally located so most days we didn't need a car. We walked to the Waterfront park and local restaurants. The owners were outstanding. We didn't have any issues while there, but they made you feel very welcome and that it was never a problem to contact the property manager if you had a concern. I would highly recommend staying here for anyone looking to come to Beaufort. It just can't be beat. We will definitely stay here again the next time we plan a trip home. My husband and I keep telling ourselves, if we ever move back to Beaufort this is where we want to be! Thank you so much for providing us with such a warm and lovely home away from home.

Expectations exceeded

  • 5 of 5

In February we dreamed of a month’s vacation. Involvement yet time for rest and reflection along with a house in an new area within a day’s drive was our goal. We wanted a historical and cultural appreciation of a new region of our country.

VRBO’s Beaufort, South Carolina appeared. It was prominent in both the Revolutionary War and the Civil War. We selected 506 Craven Street in the National Historic Point area. It was built in the 1890s, a much younger sister to many of its neighbors. By foot or pedal one can spend hours along Live Oak shaded streets or lanes graced with wavering Spanish Moss. Or, one may stroll along the bay with swings, grass, and restaurants or a half a block north find shops and art galleries and never more than a quarter mile from “home”. Additionally from 506 Craven, we walked to the library, post office, and church without creating an ounce of perspiration in July! We became involved in the local arts and social services. We went to the Marine Corp graduation on Paris Island: a poignant patriotic experience. We viewed porpoises in their natural environment: free and sovereign. We measured the tide against the wharf as it ebbed and flowed its 9 feet. We met and visited with neighbors as casual as if we were in Mayberry.

Yet, 506 Craven kept saying stay home. In the library/den, we could read, watch the big screen, or nap. In the dining room we celebrated the Fourth of July with eight family members comfortably seated around the table piled with good American food prepared in the very modern and efficient kitchen. We put a 500 piece puzzle together on the coffee table in the living room with space to spare for observers or distractors. We had two porches in which to read or nap. The first floor one was screened and gently breezed by the soothing ceiling fan. The upstairs front porch provided an excellent view of the passing few of Beaufort. Both were quiet, and each vied for our extended naps. For serious sleeping, we had three bedrooms in which to repose and awake only when self-prompted. If we still needed conscious cessation, the hammock in the shade of the backyard Magnolia readily beckoned.

Our expectations of 506 Craven were exceeded. The words “quality” and “caring” jump out when assessing its contents and creature comforts and the owner and agent respectively. Not one joy above could have been fulfilled without them. Our February dream was most gratifying even in the Low Country of South Carolina in July.

Lovely Southern Home

  • 5 of 5

We recently spent a month in Beaufort and were so fortunate to stay in this lovely home. The house is so charming and comfortable and is exactly as described on the listing. We rarely used our car as shops, restaurants and entertainment were all within walking distance. Hunting State Park was only 15 minutes by car and well worth the short ride. The beach is spectacular! We are looking forward to staying at Craven House again next year!

A wonderful house.

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned home from our second stay in Craven House. The house is a beautiful Victorian house (one of the Painted Ladies of Beaufort) located on a quiet street in the historic point. It is comfortably and charmingly furnished, very clean and excellently equipped and feels like a home rather than a rental. One of our favourite activities was to sit on the veranda watching and listening to the horse drawn carriage tours passing by. Beaufort's beautiful waterfront park, shops and restaurants galore are all within an easy walk. The owners are very helpful and quick to respond to any questions or concerns. We loved staying there and look forward to returning next year.

A Wonderful Home

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I were fortunate to enjoy an extended stay in this lovely home. The location is perfect in the Old Point . We enjoyed wonderful long walks around the neighborhood . I especially loved sitting on the porch. The neighbors are very friendly and welcoming. You really feel as though you are In a movie. The town of Beaufort is a place where you see children walking and playing on there own without there parents watching every move. The architecture and history are remarkable. The quality of the restaurants wich are a short stroll down the street from this home rival any large city. I can't say enough good things about the owners , truly wonderful people. If you have the opurtunity to stay in this well appointed home you should not pass it up.
