About Dr. Gillian Hettinger
English professor and husband fell in love with this idyllic house, not least because of the lake, which is amazing. Perfect in all seasons, and something to do all year long. We love the wildlife and drifting gently in the canoe across the private lake--wonderful winter views across private lake, great fishing in the summertime. The land across the road and across the lake is all preserved so your views are spectacular. Great local restaurants and, of course, everything the Berkshires has to offer. You'll be delighted with this rare find and come back again and again. You'll come for the culture--the music, theater, dance--and you'll stay for tranquil hours reading a favorite book on the porch, or beginning to write your novel.

Fantastic lakeside retreat!
We had a wonderful weekend in this cozy and comfortable retreat. We had plenty of room and everything we needed - fully stocked w/dishes, cookware, etc...even a dog bowl! There is a fantastic view of the lake (right outside your door!) from several of the rooms including the main living area with a wood burning fireplace. It was the perfect place to relax and read a good book. The wifi worked well so we were still in touch on our "get-away." The host was absolutely fantastic - we had the heat turned up and lights on when we initially arrived at the house after dark. We enjoyed looking through the countless brochures and books about the area and tried to hit several of the recommended spots. Highly recommend this property!
What an absolutely and generous review. I’ve moved it to the top of the list and actually want to embroider in needlepoint and hang on the wall. Plus you left the house spotless. We do hope you’ll come back. It’s lovely on the lake in any season.
Great place to stay with family.
The location is wonderful. We heard the ice make lots of noise in the evening. Lots of information was provided regarding the area.
We enjoyed a nice long weekend spending time with family, skiing and watching the Olympics.
Absolutely loved these perfect guests who left our home immaculate. Do hope they’ll come back.
Great house in Sheffield
We had an amazing time in this well appointed and cozy home over New Year's. The frigid temps did not spoil the view of snow on the lake in the morning and gave purpose to the roaring fire in the evenings. Thank you for a great week.
Great location, awesome place to get away and relax!
Thanks so much—just what we love to hear!
Well-appointed home in perfect New England setting
We absolutely enjoyed our time at Elterwater. In addition to its beautiful lakeside setting and quiet neighborhood, the house contained every convenience we needed (or could have imagined). The property is spotlessly-maintained and very comfortable. Gillian recommended an amazing nearby restaurant. In sum: a superb choice for southwestern Massachusetts.
Absolutely delightful guests who left the home in immaculate condition.
Wonderful choice in a lovely neighborhood
The property is all that the description promises. Picturesque setting, private but easily accessible, clean and well-equipped with all amenities, it was a perfect choice for an adult sibling reunion. Gillian was very responsive to email inquiries and made us feel welcomed in her home. There are plenty of nearby opportunities for indoor or outdoor activities in and around Sheffield. I only wish we had booked a longer stay!
We love guests like this. They made the most of their stay in the Berkshires and we look forward to them coming back.
Incredible wealth of things to do all year round--all the cultural activities of the Berkshires within easy reach. Great hiking all year, especially close-by Appalachian Trail and Mount Washington Reservation. In summer, close to Sheffield's Berkshire Choral Festival. Boston Symphony Orchestra, Tanglewood, Shakespeare and Company, Berkshire Theater Company, Jacob's Pillow. Near to Berkshire School, too, to visit your boarding school students. We're five miles south of Great Barrington in Sheffield so you avoid the tourist crush--yet really close to everything--just a mile off Route 7. 5 miles north of Connecticut, Litchfield County and Infinity Hall. You have a prime lakefront location on a private lake with remarkable serenity. Great dining all around, including local Guido's Marketplace Cafe smack on Main Street, plus Stage Coach Inn. Beautiful Sheffield is also the site of historic Shay's Rebellion, home of Mumbet, early Civil Rights figure and site of first UFO abduction! Great hiking-Mount Everett and Mount Washington--plus local covered bridge. Wonderful local wildlife on your doorstep with bald eagle, swans, blue herons. Plus, because of excellent location, you're also close (5 miles) to attractions south in Connecticut such as Music Mountain in Norfolk, Lime Rock for racing and Litchfield--perfect little New England towns, loaded with history. The quintessential New England experience and you'll be delighted you found it. (And ask about local UFO sighting, attested to by Governor of Massachusetts) Expanded cable with CNN, TNT, PBS, Discovery Channel, ESPN. Wi-fi and good cell reception, somewhat rare in the Berkshires.
