About Dr. Gillian Hettinger

English professor and husband fell in love with this idyllic house, not least because of the lake, which is amazing. Perfect in all seasons, and something to do all year long. We love the wildlife and drifting gently in the canoe across the private lake--wonderful winter views across private lake, great fishing in the summertime. The land across the road and across the lake is all preserved so your views are spectacular. Great local restaurants and, of course, everything the Berkshires has to offer. You'll be delighted with this rare find and come back again and again. You'll come for the culture--the music, theater, dance--and you'll stay for tranquil hours reading a favorite book on the porch, or beginning to write your novel.

Dr. Gillian Hettinger purchased this house in 2012

Why Dr. Gillian Hettinger chose Berkshires

This year-round lovely property has everything you want for the perfect vacation getaway--romantic weekend, hiking the Appalachian Trail, skiing, girls' retreat. Feel the weight of the world fall off your shoulders when you enter and look out at the lake, just beyond the slope to water's edge. Cozy wood-burning fireplace with wood supplied. Peaceful, yet not remote and on a sought-after, very private lake with views -- about a mile off Route 7 in Sheffield and just five miles south of Great Barrington. The house is a 60's ranch and is absolutely immaculately clean-- there's also the charm of hearing the screen door slam on the porch which evokes memories of summers past.

What makes this house unique

200 feet directly on the 150-acre private lake with your own private dock and canoe and protected shoreline across. Surrounded by Land Trust protected property. Enjoy the cozy wood burning fireplace in addition to individually controlled heat in every room. You will never want to leave. Water is pure, tested, and good to drink. All linens and paper products provided--just walk in, relax, and enjoy this magical house--don't you deserve it?

Guestbook comments from the owner

Stayed on this idyllic lake--beautifully furnished house with everything we needed. Fishing for bass was outstanding and it was a wonderful few days.

Wonderful lake retreat

  • 5 of 5

This property is such a treat! Plenty of room, comfortable, great kitchen for fun family meals and a great location right on the lake. Perfect for privacy, but close to neighbors, country restaurants and grocery just down the road so you don't feel isolated. We really enjoyed exploring the nearby towns for sights and shopping - Great Barrington and Stockbridge were close by and had really nice shops. The house is on a nice road for biking and jogging with minimal traffic.

We wanted a nice mountain get away for a spring break visit. Little did we know we'd be there for what the news called the "worst storm of the decade" = blizzard with 3+ feet of snow. Gillian was in contact with us and regularly available for advice and information. We were able to see the sights the first couple of days, stocked up on groceries and hunkered down to watch the beautiful snowfall. Gillian made sure someone came by to plow the driveway and the next day we were able to make it out and about without any problem. No hesitation to give this wonderful place a 5 star rating in the midst of all this, so imagine how nice it will be in the summer!

I hope we have the opportunity to stay at Elterwater again and would highly recommend it for a great family vacation or a nice get away with friends.

Owner's Response: What an absolutely wonderful and generous review. We were so concerned about the snow and you were such troupers, just toughing it out and making the most of your stay. Thank you so much! Warmest wishes, Gillian

This house was even better than the pictures!

  • 5 of 5

Our party of four adults and my dog enjoyed this lake house immensely. The house is situated well off a relatively quiet road and the driveway has plenty of parking space. The house was comfortably furnished and accessorized with interesting, whimsical pieces and lovely art work. The bed linens and towels were of good quality and we never wanted for blankets. Had we wanted to, we could have easily prepared a dinner in the complete kitchen. The porch was the ideal spot to catch the sunrise. Although the yard was large enough for my dog to romp safely, the nearby town park had a short hiking trail for more exercise. We also enjoyed the Jug End State Park and would have hiked the Appalachian Trail if we had more time. Sheffield is a great location for exploring the Berkshires. All in all, it was a pleasure to rent a house where the owner clearly considered the comfort of her guests. I would definitely stay there again!

A Little Slice of Heaven

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I were very blessed to have been able to spend three weeks at this delightful home on a private lake. Tranquility. Beauty. Serenity. Extremely well maintained. Every need anticipated. Ample information provided on a wide range of activities available in the Berkshires. We felt like honored guests. This respite from our usual lives left us refreshed and renewed. We are looking forward to returning, especially since we now know how peaceful and comfortable the accommodations are and how much there is to do. Thank you many, many times over, Dr. Gillian! You are a very special lady.

fantastic vacation

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I rented this house for the month of July. The house was spotless, and everything we needed was laid out for us. My husband woke up each morning and got in the boat and fished on the private lake. He caught many bass. The house is located very close to all of the hiking trails, museums, golf courses, and restaurants, and we did something every day. Gillian and her husband, Norman, as well as daughter Caitlin are delightful people. They came by to check on us to make sure everything was going well. When we needed a new shade for the bedroom we texted Gillian, and it was replaced within a few hours. It was a super vacation, and we plan on going back in 2019.

A Lovely Lake House in The Berkshires

  • 5 of 5

We had such a wonderful time at this property. This home is located in a lovely town in Sheffield, The Berkshires. It feels like a remote location, but it is close enough to good food and good drink (loved the Barrington Brewery).

Gillian was amazingly accommodating, very friendly and helpful with all my concerns and requests. The booking process was easy, someone is always available, but never interfered with our privacy. The house itself is clean and tastefully decorated, it reminds me of a small stylish (boutique) hotel in New York City. You can tell by the detail in the décor that Gillian cares and it shows!

The beds are comfortable and wifi makes it easy to keep in touch, or work if you must (I did not). There is some gear for fun; a canoe and kayak for the lake, bikes, board games, books, etc. We enjoyed our time on the deck that overlooks the lake, it was just so beautiful to watch the calmness of the water. It was hard to venture out, I was happy just to sit lakeside with my cup of coffee, but we wanted to take a stab at The Appalachian Trail.

The guidebooks have lots of ideas, we loved our trip to Hancock Shaker Village. If you are interested in American History, you can take a refreshing walk back into the past through beautiful buildings, gardens and farm animals. Very interesting place if you would like to know more about Shaker Culture history.

Gillian, thank you for letting us share your home and for the lovely bottle of Pinot Grigio.

I Highly recommend this house for anyone looking to stay in the area.

Cheers, Sonia
