About Matthew Patrick

Matthew Patrick is an Academy Award Nominated film director and photographer. He is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and the Directors Guild of America. Matthew lives with his wife and 2 children in Hollywood. He loves spending time at Joshua Tree Paradise, which is a constant source of inspiration.

Matthew Patrick purchased this house in 1999

Why Matthew Patrick chose Joshua Tree

In 1991 I took a trip to Joshua Tree National Park and instantly fell in love with its unusual beauty. It's not far from Los Angeles, yet it feels like another world. I wanted land like the Park, so I purchased a 2.5 acre parcel in 1992. I camped on it often, sleeping out under the stars. I still always sleep outside, regardless of the weather or season.

As time went on, I realized I didn't want any neighbors, so I bought the land around me. The property now totals 10 parcels and 100 acres. It's a half mile long and quarter mile wide. To walk the perimeter can take a day. If you walk towards the road, you will find tall cliffs and a deep wash, which is Coyote Hole, a landmark you will find in the guidebooks.

Coyote Hole has been a favorite spot for indigenous people for thousands of years. There used to be an Indian encampment located where the property is now and you still can find arrow heads and pottery. Please leave them where you found them, as they are part of Joshua Tree Paradise's historical heritage.

Joshua Tree Paradise is a great retreat for my friends and family, and I try to get out there as much as possible. It offers celebrities privacy and a chance to enjoy nature without being disturbed. In 2012 I opened its doors to the public, and it have been very successful over the years with hundreds of guests, many of them returns visits.

All photographs on this website was taken by me on the property. You too will take amazing photos. I invite you to kick back and relax, walk around, stargaze and dream.

What makes this house unique

Joshua Tree has become the Woodstock of the West, with a creative community of artists, musicians, artisans, and healers. It's a high desert arts mecca and spiritual center.

Go to a music festival, or catch a play at the local theater. Listen to live music at Pappy and Harriet's. Paul McCartney played there recently, so make sure to get reservations! Go take a swim at the Mentalphysics compound or go antiquing in Yucca Valley. Be sure to check out the weekend swap meet, where you may find hidden treasures.

If you're a rock climber, you already know Joshua Tree National Park is one of the most famous and amazing spots to climb. Climbers come from around the world to challenge themselves on the many designated climbs.

Keep your eyes open and you'll see a wide variety of animals including, coyotes, quail, owls, bats, foxes, chuckwallas, lizards, hawks, road runners, snakes, bobcats, vultures, and lots of rabbits. There are yucca, Joshua trees, cholla, and a variety of cacti, juniper, cat's claw and many other plants. Visit in springtime to see the majestic desert blooms.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Thanks so much Matthew. Your beautiful slice of paradise is also my favorite place which is why I keep coming back so long as you'll have me. I'm no artist, just a stress filled guy who needs his "me" time. JTP is the perfect place. I find it calming and spiritual and it literally transforms me if only for a few days. I have checked out your other websites and the blogs and so on. Very fascinating! Those funny videos were great. What an amazing talent you have. Great work! And not to mention academy nominated for your short film.... PRICELESS!

Thanks so much for everything Matthew... I greatly appreciate you being so kind.

Words aren't enough

I have been coming to JTP for over 4 years now and this was my 8th time staying at Matthews place. It’s the one and only place that I can literally get away from it all. I have never in my life heard such peace and quiet. It’s so quiet and calm that you can literally hear a pin drop. I have never seen such natural beauty. Yes, it’s the desert, but it’s full of life and beautiful in its own light. I have never seen the night sky so lit up with stars and never have I ever seen as many shooting stars as I have here. All visible with the naked eye. This place is spectacular, and the land is truly magical. There is something very calming and peaceful about this place that one would only understand if you experience it. There are tons of rentals available in Joshua Tree and yes there are some beautiful modern looking new homes that you can rent but, in my opinion, none compare to Matthews place. The house is a double wide which some may frown upon, but it is totally comfortable, highly functional and Matthew does a fantastic job of providing you with everything one would need. He even provides you with laundry detergent pods to do a few loads of laundry if need be. The land is the reason one should/would come to JTP. In all the times I’ve come I had never met Matthew or any of the caretakers but this time I was fortunate and lucky enough to meet them all. Matthew the owner is a Hollywood movie director and is a truly nice guy who wants nothing more than for you to enjoy your time at his place. Incredibly talented, really cool and super easy to work with. He has an absolute passion for his land and I totally get it as I too share his passion for his place. It’s phenomenal! Diane who is one of the caretakers cleans the house and gets things ready for your visit. She does and has always done a fantastic job and is a total sweetheart. Mark is also one of the caretakers that lives locally and is always willing, able, and available to help should anything come up. He made sure to let me know not to hesitate to call him should I need anything, a great guy. I can talk about this place for hours. I love it! It’s surreal and stunningly beautiful. Do yourselves a favor and experience Matthews place. It’s a visit you wont regret. Thank you Matthew for sharing your place with me. It was such a pleasure getting to meet you and your team. You’re amazing and I will continue to come back year after year.

Very nice location.

  • 5 of 5

The location is remote, but still close to town and JT Park this is great in itself. The property is large complete with hiking trails. The house is clean and has room for six. The main source of power is solar and everything works just like a house on the grid, but it has a backup generator just in case, nice setup. Will be returning. Great host!

We had a great time at JT Paradise

  • 5 of 5

JT Paradise met all our needs for our 4 night stay. It was a unique property and a perfect way to experience the desert in comfort. The kids had fun exploring the rocks. The house was comfortable and the kitchen well stocked for our group of six. We enjoyed the beautiful night sky which was perfect for viewing the Geminid meteor shower. The property was wonderfully isolated but also very convenient to the both the park and town. We would happily stay at this property again when we go back to Joshua Tree. **Apologies for the belated review.**

Unique, remote and extremely relaxing break!

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay immensely, especially the perfectly peaceful and private location, that is still very convenient for the park itself. There is plenty to wander around and explore on the property alone, and the house itself is a delightfully cozy little getaway with all the luxuries you could need for an awesome escape into the desert. Thank you very much for letting us stay in your wonderful home.

Relax at Home Amongst a Wonderland of Rocks

  • 5 of 5

A month after staying at Joshua Tree Paradise, the wonderful memories endure.

This was a very comfortable, peaceful retreat that provided a great escape inside and outside the home; it lives up to the descriptions that you read online and delightfully exceeds expectations. The trails outside of the home provided a unique landscape to explore, and our three boys (age 9-14) loved scampering up this playground of boulders. It was amazing seeing them pick out paths climbing hundreds of feet above us determined to get to the pinnacles amongst the giant jumbles of rocks. At night, we hung out and roasted s'mores around the fire pit as the boys explored within earshot, laid on the plentiful beds outside (easily furnished with cushions from inside the home) and gazed into the Milky Way. It was just as nice to be able to have family meals in the home (with a guest-friendly kitchen), played games in the evening (from the bountiful selection), and got as good a night's rest as we have had on vacation. The relaxed but very tasteful style of the home made it easy to settle in for all of us. Although getting to Paradise may feel off the grid, we really had all the amenities we needed in this solar-powered home (including good WiFi).

The warm, dry climate was certainly a perfect escape from the Pacific Northwest. The relatively short drive to the entrance of Joshua Tree National Park is a bonus. Having been to many great parks and places in and beyond the United States, Joshua Tree was nonetheless very distinctive and surprising and beautiful - truly unlike anywhere we have been before. We were able to select several good destinations in the park, especially during the beautiful light of the late afternoon as the sun made its way to the horizon. Watching the climbers with their gear was thrilling and fun as well. We could have stayed much longer, and we would easily consider staying at our base camp/home again if we returned to visit Joshua Tree.

The owner, Matthew, provided a perfect balance of virtual hospitality with the right amount of outstanding communication, information and reasonable instructions to provide confidence well before our arrival while also allowing freedom to explore and be very comfortable as guests. This experience will likely remain our standard for what VRBO and a good owner can do to facilitate the joy of travel.

Magical Ranch

  • 5 of 5

We had an absolutely magical stay! The boulders and natural desert landscape are incredible and should be experienced by everyone. We spent most of our time outside hiking and exploring, eating meals outside and lots of time under the stars. The home was very comfortable and included everything we needed with a great view from every window!

Now I understand why people book this property multiple times. Thank you so much for sharing your gorgeous ranch with us!!
