All of this and more...but you'll not find another vacation experience in the High Country that will even come close to the uniqueness of all that Hen's Tooth Acres Farm has to offer.
You can trust the reviews...everything they say about this place is true. Both of my kids (7 and almost 2) insisted on being back for chores each evening, and I agree that even if you never went anywhere except to grab some groceries, you would enjoy your stay. Fred told us about two trails on the property that we never got around to exploring, but we will next time.
We did enjoy our excursions to Mast General, the Linville Gorge and Caverns, some hiking near Grandfather, and canoeing on Price Lake. If you have kids, ask for the scavenger hunt brochure at Mast...it's a great way to keep them busy but have them check in frequently. We made breakfast each morning with our fresh eggs, and enjoyed "dinner" al fresco a couple of nights (simple things like bread, cheese, and fruit). Once the kids were in bed, my husband and I enjoyed sitting outside in the quiet and listening for the creek. I even saw a shooting star. We never turned on the TV, the Goat's Milk soap made perfect souvenirs, and we pretty much were all ready to just ask what the rent would be if we moved in. Despite being exhausted from birthing calves and goats, and normal daily farm work, Fred still spent time letting us "help" gather eggs and feed the animals. My kids LOVED all of the animals, and I can tell Fred has a special bond with them all, too.
The apartment was nothing fancy, but cozy, comfy, and clean and actually bigger in person than it looks in the pictures. It had everything we needed and then some. It was so nice not having to pack toys, linens, etc. and to be able to do a load of laundry while there. Oh, one piece of advice: if you are germ-averse or "city-fied", pack a set of clothes and shoes just for farm chores. You can just store them in the utility room each night and they'll be ready the next day, and you can keep your other clothes fresh.
I almost don't want to advertise this place, because I want to be able to rent it whenever we can, but it is a priceless family vacation for 10% of the price you would pay for a family of 4 to go to Disney! We had an unforgettable time, and as a mountain girl, I can't wait to return.
We really enjoyed our time at Hens Tooth Farm. Such a wonderful place to recharge and take it easy. We loved to do the chores and be with the animals. My daughter just loved the baby goats and Max the dog. I jokingly said to farmer Fred today I have to go back to civilization but later told him his civilization it's more civilized than mine. I guess the best compliment you can give is you wish you could stay longer and you want to return. That's how me and my family feel including my dog. The farm was a true mountaintop experience.
Thanks for the wonderful memories
We had an amazing weekend at Hen's Tooth Farm. We headed to the mountains for a ski weekend and ended up finding an educational and peaceful stay at the farm. The farm is centrally located to Sugar, Beech and Appalachian, which we skied all three over the course of the long weekend. We were also able to help Farmer Fred do farm chores in the mornings and evenings. I thoroughly enjoyed learning about the animals and sustainability and the kids just loved all the animals. Farmer Fred is the perfect host who is there if you need him, but is not intrusive. I would highly recommend Hen's Tooth!
We had tha best time with farmer fred and his farm animals. My 2 grandaughters 3 and 4 loved feeding all the animals and doing the chores. Fred's rental was awesome, it had everything you needed and more. We will definitely come again.
I have never stayed somewhere where it felt so much like a second home. Farmer Fred shares his knowledge (and his beautifulsos MAX) of ALL his animals and the function of the farm. His presence is known but by NO means Overwhelming - great experience for families or grown adults. Nothing to say but PERFECT !!
Absolutely one of our best vacations! My 11 year old said she liked it better than Disney! We we were greeted right away upon arrival and walked to our large apartment overlooking the pasture with a mountain backdrop. We had a lovely little fenced in garden area with patio swing, perfect to let out our small dog to explore. In our apartment we had a dozen fresh farm eggs and some aromatic goats milk soap waiting for us as an arrival gift. We enjoyed playing with the fusball table our first night and got settled in. Although the temperature outside was very cold, our place was cozy warm. The beds are comfortable and we slept well. Making breakfast was really easy with all the dishes and pans available. The pantry was even stocked with coffee and sundry of other things. It was quite and relaxing! Just what we were looking forward to! Our whole family (3) helped with the farm chores each morning: collecting eggs, & feeding the chickens, goats and cows. We even tried our hand at milking the goat! We hope to come back to Hen's Tooth Acre Farms in the spring or summer to see the baby goats and cows!
Year round activities make historic Valle Crucis an excellent vacation destination or simply a great place to get away.
