About Sara Matson
This is our family home which we purchased to be near our extended family who have been in the area for nearly forty years. We are a trans-Atlantic family, having lived in Europe for many years as well. If it's of interest, we speak Dutch too.
Sara Matson purchased this House in 2000
Why Sara Matson chose Becket
This house was on and off the market for years before we bought it and renovated it. It has a long and interesting history too. The house was built, we are fairly certain, in 1790 and has had just one major addition to it since then. Unfortunately the barn collapsed probably in the mid-1990's. This was a cattle farm with a large apple orchard (the oldest trees still visible by the neighbors across the road) and originally had hundreds of acres, like its sister farm, 'Canterbury Farms' at the end of the road. The original owners were the Snow Family, of whom the road is named. We call it the Snow House for that reason.
What makes this House unique
In our renovation work ten years ago we sought to retain the flavor of an old farmhouse but with modern conveniences. We are on top of Wadsworth Hill. As you drive up the road you will notice that just as the hill begins to level off you have reached our house. In summer the trees have begun to block the view, but still there is a magnificent feeling of being on top of the hill and here you will always catch the best breezes. The house is quite secluded but within a half hour from everything. You can be busy with everything that the Berkshires has to offer, or just spend the day with a good book, lying out on the almost one acre of lawn, or in the hammock or on our screened in porch and its view of our two hundred year old maple trees. If cooking and family mealtimes are your favorite things to do, our kitchen is a dream. Gather around for a big family meal, by the living room fireplace or in the kitchen. You will want to come back next year!

Awesome property and a wonderful home
Beautiful home and property. Was perfect for my daughters wedding weekend.
We’re so glad you all enjoyed yourselves! House looks great.
Sara was very responsive. The home was incredibly well stocked with books of every ilk, games and toys for the kids in addition to the well stocked kitchen. It even had cookbooks! It was clean, but the oven was dirty and the grill grate had caked on dirt. There was a rusted out fire pit that was unusable. Two pieces of furniture slid off the wood they were resting on. The property was beautiful but by the end of the week it was hard to be so far from everything. The grocery was 20 minutes away and it was hard when we forgot something.
We had a wonderful stay! The frog pond and blueberry bushes were incredible, an the location was perfect for us ( a dance company performing at Jacob's Pillow, just down the road). Sarah was very responsive and got a plumber in right away when the water heater failed, though ew did have to reset it several times before that. Overall, it was a beautiful spot and we'd be happy to recommend it.
Would happily come back
Our group of nine (7 adults and 2 teenagers) felt immediately comfortable in this house. Everyone found their own spot in it, though around the kitchen table and on the screened porch were particular favorites. The selection of books seemed to have been chosen with us in mind. We sampled nearly everything the area had to offer, and it's true that most of it is no more than a half-hour's drive away. We did venture as far as Mass MoCA, though, which we'd recommend. Fred Snow Road is quiet enough that you can actually walk along it. In the end, though, what we enjoyed most was the house and grounds. The sunken court was perfect for badminton, the lawn for croquet, and the frogs in the pond provided music. The oven worked (we made two cakes in it). The house is full of curiosities, but not overstuffed. It reminded us of a place we'd loved as children. We would do it again.
We’re so glad you enjoyed the house so much!
The home was charming with the owners personal collection of art. Comfortable overstuffed furniture, gorgeous antiques and every upgraded modern convenience. This home has it all! The owner was very accommodating and responsive to all questions.. This home felt like it could be displayed in the pages of Veranda magazine.
Thank you so much! Come again soon.
Our stay was pleasant and I would recommend the property. The oven not working was a big inconvenience. We had many meal planned that we needed the oven. Other then that, it was great.
HI Theresa, I am so sorry about the oven, but it was the fault of the repairman who had promised to fix it! If you want to book again we could fix you a discounted rate.
In summer we are half an hour from Tanglewood and 7 minutes from Jacob's Pillow world-class dance centre. In winter we are just up the road from Canterbury Farms Cross Country Ski Resort and their well groomed, 200+ acres of trails. Just outside of Pittsfield is Bosquet Family (Downhill Ski) and a little further north is the nationally recognized Jiminy Peak, with its state-of-the-art snowmaking! For winter hiking we are very near many official hiking trails.
For Summer Fun: We are next door to the world renowned Jacobs Pillow Dance Festival and Tanglewood, the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s summer residence. Massachusetts Museum for Contemporary Art (Mass MoCA) is in nearby North Adams; Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge and Edith Wharton’s House in Lenox. There is Shakespeare and Company Theatre Festival in Stockbridge and The Colonial Theatre in Pittsfield. There is the Williamstown Theatre Festival, the Clark Museum in Williamstown and of course the fascinating Hancock Shaker Village outside of Pittsfield. Closer to home is the Appalachian Trial, Center Pond our local swimming spot and the Becket Arts Center, which offers classes and local exhibitions all summer long.
All year long: We are close to the picturesque town of Lee, and their Prime Outlets Shoppping Mall. Lee has a good library with free Wi-Fi, there area few cafes, hardware stores and supermarkets. We are also close to the small city of Pittsfield, the towns of Stockbridge, Lenox and Great Barrington with easy driving distance. Outside of Pittsfield is the Berkshire Mall that has everything from a Sears to a movie theatre.
We are two and a half hours from downtown Boston and three hours from downtown New York City.
