Why Deborah Smith chose Melrose on the Beach
Just as Daufuskie is a special place, so is the Melrose area of the island. One of the original eleven plantations on Daufuskie, Melrose was famous for its Sea Island cotton and thriving social life in the 1800’s. The former plantation bears the name of a Scottish rose brought to the island by Captain Mongin. The main house, known as the Melrose Mansion, was surrounded by lavish rose gardens and looked out at the Atlantic Ocean and beautiful white sand beaches. Today, Melrose encompasses over 700 acres and you’ll share those same white sand beaches with nesting Bald Eagles, Loggerhead Turtles and dolphin.

Amazing little getaway
We had a wonderful time at Daufuski Island and Bliss Cottage. The location was perfect, with a quick 2 minute walk to the beach, and a yummy restaurant about a 2 min walk as well. The cottage was exactly as described, clean, and has a homey feel to it. I loved the size of the bedrooms, which was perfect for us. We wanted a change of scenery since being quarantined for 2 months, and this was just what we needed. It was our first time to the island, and we enjoyed exploring the island with the golf cart that was included with our stay. We saw an alligator, deer, turtle, snake, baby shark, a stingray, an armadillo, crab, and jellyfish. The hammock in the back yard was nice and relaxing after spending the day on the beach. We will be back!
All the right spaces in all the right places
We loved staying at Bliss Cottage! We were wanting something completely different than we had ever done before - a throwback vacation, if you will- and Daufuskie island provided just that. The cottage was everything we needed. It provided a respite from the heat, great spaces indoor and out to hang out together. We played bean bag toss, threw the football, lounged in our hammocks, and sat on the screened in back porch. Having the golf cart to drive all week was such a fun change, and we made sure to venture out to explore the island each evening.
I can’t say enough good things about Deb and Karla. When our tv went out, they provided some dvds from their own home collection. And when my back went out, Deb had a heating pad for me! They were always quick to respond to my questions and offer suggestions.
I would eat lunch at LuLus for sure! The beach club was also delicious food and a fun environment. We took a beach break one day and enjoyed their pool.
I wish we had planned a little better regarding groceries. We cut our time too close the day of coming in, and had to rush through the grocery store. I would recommend taking advantage of the island hopper mid week to restock and get off the island.
We visited Silver Dew Pottery, Iron Fish Works, Daufuskie peach, and School grounds coffee. Everyone was so nice, and it felt good to support their businesses.
Lastly, the island and beaches are beautiful and fun. If you are looking for pristine water and high rises everywhere, this isn’t the place for you. However, we knew going in that the water would be different than what we were accustomed to. Our kids adjusted beautifully and rode some great waves! We saw dolphins from the beach a couple of days, and plenty of other wildlife that was beautiful to behold.
Do yourself a favor and add Daufuskie island to your bucket list. You won’t regret it!
This cottage is lovely. Everyone involved in our trip to Daufuskie was extremely helpful and made the experience very enjoyable!!
Great place to chill with friends
Our group has know each other for forty years and really enjoyed the laid back atmosphere of Daufuskie. Really enjoyed it all.
Everything was great!
This lovely, second row, beach cottage, is located in Melrose on the Beach, just steps away from 2 miles of quiet beaches where all you can hear is the sound of gentle waves and beautiful shore birds. Watch the shrimp boats, bike along the beach, take a Historic tour and discover the Gulah History of Daufuskie or take in a round of golf. Don't forget to try our island delicacy, deviled crabs! Better still, we'll help arrange a full low-country dinner prepared by a local resident to be delivered directly to your cottage.
Daufuskie has several unique and colorful restaurants (Daufuskie Crab Company, Lucy Bell's Cafe) where you'll swear you're in the middle of the Caribbean, as well as the casual but upscale Eagle's Nest at Bloody Point. History buffs will enjoy exploring the island and visiting various sites providing a glimpse into the past, including the recently-restored Oyster House used as a 19th century Gullah meeting place, the Billie Burns Museum, ancient cemeteries, and the two-room school house where renowned author Pat Conroy taught and which was the subject of his first book, The Water is Wide. Those interested in unique shopping opportunities will want to visit the Iron Fish Art Gallery, the Glass House, and the weekly farmer's market held at the public dock during the etc. And you certainly don't want to miss the Daufuskie Island Community Farm, where old and young visitors alike are encouraged to help feed the chickens and even to try milking a goat!
