About Mike and Hollie Nelson (Owners)

Mike was born in Alaska and spent most of his childhood exploring the outdoors and spending time with his family and friends. He moved to Washington in 1996 and has lived in the Grays Harbor area ever since where he currently works in the road maintenance and construction business and for a local school district.

Hollie was born and raised in Lake Quinault, graduated from Washington State University and married Mike in 2001.She taught for 12 years as a school teacher and now works as an Early Childhood Coordinator for a local school district

Originally, Mike and Hollie designed the Elk House for a family of three with their daughter's special medical needs in mind. However, the family simply outgrew the indoor living space as their family increased in size. The Nelsons now have 4 daughters and a son ages 12, 7, 6 and 5 year-old twins. The Nelsons also provide foster care for children in need and have a licensed foster home in the area.

The Nelson's are active in their children's school, church and community. They have a passion for serving others and feel privileged to share the home they have made so many memories in, with others. We hope you enjoy your stay at the Elk House!

Mike and Hollie Nelson (Owners) purchased this house in 2006

Why Mike and Hollie Nelson (Owners) chose Quinault

Mike and Hollie built the Elk House in 2006. The surroundings were perfect as the property borders the land that she grew up on as a child. Ziegler Creek, that borders the property was the creek she played in as a child during the summer months. The surrounding fields are where she spent most of her spare time riding horses, quads, hunting, fishing and hiking. Owning the Elk House Property, adjacent to where she made her childhood memories, was a dream come true for both Mike and Hollie. It has been such a blessing to make similar memories with our children and to know that others will do the same.

What makes this house unique

When the house was built in 2006, we were amazed at the amount of wildlife in our 'front yard.' When local salmon are spawning, bald eagle sightings are a daily occurrence. Great Blue Heron spend ample time at Zeigler Creek and it's soul soothing to hear the sounds of birds singing on a spring or summer morning while you drink a cup of coffee on the covered front porch. An occasional sighting of Black-tail deer and coyote, and the rare, but majestic passing-through of a bobcat or black bear remind us that we are in the heart of the Quinault Rain Forest.

All of the local wildlife are are fascinating to watch from the large and expansive windows in the home! However, our most frequent visitors are the famous Roosevelt Elk. When we thought about what we should name our home as a vacation rental, Mike asked, 'What's the first thing you think about when you think of this home and our property?' The answers was clear---Roosevelt Elk. And so, our home suddenly had a name--The Elk House. Herds as large as 50 elk graze comfortably on the property on a regular basis. The only boundary they seem to sense is a 20 foot perimeter around the house. Needless to say, we get the most amazing view on earth when they visit! You may hear elk bugling back and forth, witness the bulls 'fighting', Cows (female elk) nursing their calves, and enjoy the entire herd grazing and even playing right in front of your eyes. There are very few opportunities to view this magnificent animal so up close and personal in a home setting. Don't forget to bring your camera!

Guestbook comments from the owner

"The Elk House is a beautiful home in a peaceful and lovely setting. Everything about the Nelson's home is comfortable and upscale. Everything about the Quinault area is outstanding; we visited the Hoh Rainforest, the Loop, waterfalls, trails, Ruby Beach and ate at the Lake Quinault Lodge. We were visited by a herd of about 40 elk early two mornings for hours. The magnificence of these animals was equal to their alertness of our presence and ease in how they cared for themselves and each other. To witness their behaviors up-close and personal was a privilege and a one-of-a-kind experience. We are so delighted that the Nelson Family has thought to share their treasure. Thank you so much."

Upon arrival there was no toilet paper and the owner was notified. She said she would get some sent over. I told her we had purchased some and would not be home in the evening to receive it. I expected some to arrive the next day but it did not. If you are staying here make sure you bring paper products as there were no paper towels or tissues either. This was our first time to use VRBO and were surprised to find out there were no wash cloths. Is this standard not to supply wash cloths? Perhaps this could be noted? The towels and linens were very nice though. I need to let Hollie know the toaster only worked if you held the handle down and there was no iron. I find all these things easily fixable and I am sure Hollie will take care of it. The bed in the living room is a pull out from the ottoman and was most uncomfortable. We took every extra blanket we could find in the house to pad the mattress to make it "sleepable". For a house that can sleep so many people, there needs to be more than 4 cereal size bowls. Overall, we absolutely loved our stay there and would highly recommend it for a family.

This is 4 acres of paradise. Everything was comfortable in the home. We would have wished for a couple of pots that weren't humongous, and we were glad we happened to have our own measuring cups. And we had to ration the toilet paper because we couldn't find any extra rolls, anywhere. Also we tried to contact the owners about gas for the grill since it was completely out and we received no response the whole time we were there, and still haven't had a response to that question. So I would recommend bringing all of those things with you! But if you are deciding based on this review whether to pick this place or not, pick it, cuz like I said, 4 acres of paradise. It's completely private, you can't see any neighbors unless you go to the corners of the property. Which you should do. Walk around. Go lie on the grass. It's completely and ethereally peaceful. Bring a football to toss cuz it's like a private park.

The tv in the main room only had Fox news and some crummy channels you would never want to dont count on that for entertainment (or worthy news coverage). Just enjoy the quiet and the nice house :).

Tons of potential, but...

  • 3 of 5

The house is huge and clean, the outside space is magnificent- but...

We came in around 8pm. We didn’t see the instructions to where the key was located and for an hour tried to get the owners at the phone she gave us, but they were nowhere to be found. We finally found the key ourselves, and then found out there was no toilet paper in the house. Again- tried to call and text the owner in vein. 9 people, including 5 young kids, had to improvise toilet paper at a place that costs over 400$ a night.

We really wanted to have fun, but it just wasn’t possible with the time we finally managed to get in and the lack of toilet paper.
