2 Bedroom, 2 Bath Rain Forest Getaway On 4 Private Acres

The Elk House is the Quinault Rain Forest's best kept secret! This 2 bedroom, 2 bath open-concept home was built in 2006 and sits on 4 acres of private land for you to enjoy and explore. It's hard to decide where the yard ends and nature begins. Barbeque on the 280 sq. ft. covered porch and watch for Roosevelt Elk that often graze in the front field, sometimes as close as 30 feet from the house! Get cozy next to the gas fireplace under 17 foot vaulted ceilings and watch for bald eagle, black-tail deer and great blue heron--regular visitors of the property. Enjoy the outdoor fire pit area and stargaze on clear summer nights. Explore nearby Zeigler Creek, picnic under a giant Maple tree and take leisurely walks around the property. The Elk House property is tranquility at it's best!

If you want to venture out, drive, bike or walk the South Shore Road and discover nearby hiking trails, explore the World's Largest Spruce Tree, visit the famous glacier-fed Lake Quinault, or jump in your car or take a guided tour of the 31 mile loop drive into the Olympic National Park to see spectacular waterfalls, giant evergreen trees and wildlife. Whether you are here to experience outdoor recreation or just get away from the hustle and bustle of daily life, the Elk House is the perfect place for you to rest and rejuvenate.

While staying at the Elk House you will enjoy all the comforts of home. A fully functional kitchen with double convection oven and gas cook top, full-size built-in microwave, dishwasher and refrigerator allows you to enjoy family dining in a private and pristine setting. The open-concept kitchen/dining room/living room creates a family atmosphere that can't be beat! Take refuge in the 350 sq. ft. open loft with a large picture window or in the private suite on the main floor.

The Elk House was built with the outdoor enthusiast and family in mind. Everywhere you look, nature abounds. Make your next memory in Lake Quinault at the Elk House!

About Mike and Hollie Nelson (Owners)

Mike was born in Alaska and spent most of his childhood exploring the outdoors and spending time with his family and friends. He moved to Washington in 1996 and has lived in the Grays Harbor area ever since where he currently works in the road maintenance and construction business.

Hollie was born and raised in Lake Quinault, graduated from Washington State University and married Mike in 2001.She taught for 12 years as a school teacher and now works as an Early Childhood Coordinator.

Originally, Mike and Hollie designed the Elk House for a family of three with their daughter's special medical needs in mind. A peaceful home in a serene environment has been a dream come true, but they simply outgrew the indoor living space. The Nelsons now have 5 daughters and a son ages 11, 6, 5, 4 year-old twins and their newest addition who is now 15 months old! They currently live in the Quinault area.

The Nelson's are active in their children's school, church and community. They have a passion for serving others and feel privileged to share the home they have made so many memories in, with others. We hope you enjoy your stay at the Elk House!

Mike and Hollie Nelson (Owners) purchased this house in 2006

Why Mike and Hollie Nelson (Owners) chose Lake Quinault

Mike and Hollie built the Elk House in 2006. The surroundings were perfect as the property borders the land that she grew up on as a child. Ziegler Creek, that borders the property was the creek she played in as a child during the summer months. The surrounding fields are where she spent most of her spare time riding horses, quads, hunting, fishing and hiking. Owning the Elk House Property, adjacent to where she made her childhood memories, was a dream come true for both Mike and Hollie. It has been such a blessing to make similar memories with our daughters and to know that others will do the same.

What makes this house unique

When the house was built in 2006, we were amazed at the amount of wildlife in our 'front yard.' When local salmon are spawning, bald eagle sightings are a daily occurrence. Great Blue Heron spend ample time at Zeigler Creek and it's soul soothing to hear the sounds of birds singing on a spring or summer morning while you drink a cup of coffee on the covered front porch. An occasional sighting of Black-tail deer and coyote, and the rare, but majestic passing-through of a bobcat or black bear remind us that we are in the heart of the Quinault Rain Forest.

All of the local wildlife are are fascinating to watch from the large and expansive windows in the home! However, our most frequent visitors are the famous Roosevelt Elk. When we thought about what we should name our home as a vacation rental, Mike asked, 'What's the first thing you think about when you think of this home and our property?' The answers was clear---Roosevelt Elk. And so, our home suddenly had a name--The Elk House. Herds as large as 50 elk graze comfortably on the property on a regular basis. The only boundary they seem to sense is a 20 foot perimeter around the house. Needless to say, we get the most amazing view on earth when they visit! You may hear elk bugling back and forth, witness the bulls 'fighting', Cows (female elk) nursing their calves, and enjoy the entire herd grazing and even playing right in front of your eyes. There are very few opportunities to view this magnificent animal so up close and personal in a home setting. Don't forget to bring your camera!

Guestbook comments from the owner

"The Elk House is a beautiful home in a peaceful and lovely setting. Everything about the Nelson's home is comfortable and upscale. Everything about the Quinault area is outstanding; we visited the Hoh Rainforest, the Loop, waterfalls, trails, Ruby Beach and ate at the Lake Quinault Lodge. We were visited by a herd of about 40 elk early two mornings for hours. The magnificence of these animals was equal to their alertness of our presence and ease in how they cared for themselves and each other. To witness their behaviors up-close and personal was a privilege and a one-of-a-kind experience. We are so delighted that the Nelson Family has thought to share their treasure. Thank you so much."

The Elk house was such a wonderful place to stay. The location can't be beat. Close to everything. The home was warm and inviting. We loved all the windows looking over the beautiful grounds, the beds were very comfortable, having a full kitchen and laundry room was fantastic and 2 bathrooms was great. The house was spotless. It rained almost everyday, so it was nice to come back and pop on the gas fireplace to warm up and start cooking dinner. Do not hesitate to stay won't be sorry.

Elk House was Great

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at the Elk House, especially since we didn't get to see elk one morning. The house was very secluded and peaceful; we enjoyed our time sitting on the front porch a lot! Also, the house was very nice and clean.

Our stay at the Elk House

  • 5 of 5

We had a great extended stay at the Elk House.

The house is perfect for an extended stay in the Lake Quinault area.

Lots of room for everyone, and a great Living Room, Dining Room, and extremely functional kitchen.

We did lots of hiking in the area, with day trips to Mt St Helens, Hoh Forest, Beaches, Olympic...

The house grounds are beautiful, and we did have 1 night visit from a herd of Elk (in the middle of the night)

Great BBQ as well.

There is a lot to do in the immediate area...

Relaxing Place to Stay when visiting Olympic National Park

  • 5 of 5

This property is very well maintained and clean. It is nicely set back from the road and very quiet. It was a great place to relax after a day of hiking and activities and well equipped for meal preparation. I appreciated the owners willingness to accommodate our change of dates and how easy it was to work with them. I have no hesitation recommending this property.
