Why George Bozarth chose Sanford

With Trafton House it was love at first sight! Like finding that perfect piece of antique furniture—only this was a whole house! And WE live most of the time on the opposite coast!

Trafton House and the gentle countryside and expansive beaches of southern Maine is where we go to rest and recharge our batteries, and when we're not there we like to share with others the pleasure of living in the graceful century-old Trafton House.

What makes this house unique

What we like about being in Sanford is living away from all of the clogged traffic of the Maine coast in summer, but still within easy reach of all those enjoyable sights, scenes, and activities.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you so much for letting us rent your house in Sanford! The house was full of character, and we loved being there to enjoy it. Daniel, your concierge, did a fantastic job making sure everything was in order and made the whole process of arriving and leaving go very smoothly.

Thank you again for letting us enjoy your beautiful house while we were in Maine.

This house oozes charm and character, and will make for a memorable vacation or occasion—as we've been told by all of our visitors! Good dining at Mill 67 in Sanford and the Bradford Block Bistro in nearby Springvale (see photos). The Dirty Dozen Donuts shop is just down Main Street, and delicious Shain's of Maine premium ice cream is made in Sanford and sold at their ice cream shop (next to their restaurant) on South Main Street (Rt. 109).

A lot of potential but ultimately disappointing

  • 2 of 5

This is not an easy review to write because it's clear the owner loves and takes great pride in his home. George was responsive, polite, and easy to work with via email, and his "concierge," Karie, was incredibly kind and helpful. However, the home itself was more rundown than I expected based on the majority of prior reviews. At first glance, this is the sort of home Nicole Curtis of "Rehab Addict" would drool over. It's a once-grand home with original dark woodwork throughout, and is quite large. But the kitchens and bathrooms seem to have been rehabbed in the 80s, and now look dingy and dirty. The carpets seemed old, some of the furniture was broken and/or sagging, and the rooms had inadequate lighting. Some examples: we attempted to open one of the exterior doors and the handle fell off. We attempted to turn on a bedside light, and it literally fell into two pieces. When we sat on the sole couch in the living room, it sagged so badly in the middle no adult was comfortable in it, and so it was relegated to our small children. The claw foot tub was pretty to look at, but was installed at an odd angle that causes the dirty water to pool at the end away from the drain during showers. When one of us sat on a wingback chair, the wing nearly fell off. These things combined together to make it feel like the house was in pretty poor condition. (It didn't help to find nail clippings on one bedroom floor and long strands of hair hanging off of lamps and in the bathroom.) While the bed linens and towels provided were very comfortable and clean, and most of the mattresses were comfortable, the beds themselves were small (mostly doubles) and not really adequate for two adults to sleep in together.

I feel for the owner (who lives on the west coast) and his concierge. It must be difficult to give a vacation rental property -- especially one this old -- what it needs from a distance. But I feel more beholden to other renters who will see all the 5 star reviews and have very high expectations of this house. This home has so much potential, but needs a lot of attention inside and out.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your evaluation. It is always helpful to see our home through others eyes. We are very sorry that your vacation in Trafton House was less than enjoyable. For the upcoming 2018 season, the rugs, sofa, and living room chairs are new, as also two of the beds. Thank you for letting us know about the angle of the bathtub. We had some plumbing work done at the start of the season, and it sounds like the little angle blocks on the far end were removed. That will be corrected. . We shall try to tighten up on the housekeeping. Between each family of visitors, the kitchen and bathrooms are thoroughly cleaned (including the floors), surfaces are dusted, rugs vacuumed. The kitchen, the elegant quarter-sawn oak dining room, the grand fireplace and staircase, and the other rooms are all as pictured in our photographs. Again, we are sorry for all that did not meet our normal standards. Best regards, Tamara and George

Roomy, but musty and poorly furnished

  • 2 of 5

Our group spent 5 nights at this rental. The house is very spacious, and is a stately old mansion. However, most rooms had old carpets and old rugs, dusty drapes, and old, worn furniture. Several in our group had allergies, and the dust made the house uncomfortable for them. Also, the house is right up against Main Street, which is surprisingly noisy for a small town. It made sleeping in the front bedrooms difficult.

The caretaker was helpful and very responsive. The owner responded to one email, then didn't respond to two further messages.

We liked being in Sanford. Bunganut Lake park is about 15 minutes away, and is beautiful and has good swimming. It's an easy drive to Old Orchard Beach, Wells, Ogunquit, and other beaches. Even Portland is only about 40-45 minutes away.

All in all, the rental was adequate, but didn't live up to the description in other reviews.

Owner's Response: I responded once via email, and then turned the matter over to my concierge, who responded as well by cleaning the house a second time (she cleans the whole house between every group of summer renters. When she is done, there should be no musty smell or dusty drapes). This party complained that the VRBO listing was under "Village," but unfortunately that is the only category that VRBO offers for a small town. Yes, there is a lot of traffic on Main Street (State Rt 109) during the day, but the traffic dies down to practically nothing during the night. The entire house has double-pane or storm window that greatly abates the road sounds when closed (nearly every room has an air conditioner.). This is our first tenant over many years of renting Trafton House, to say that the traffic disturbed their sleep at night. We are very sorry that it did. (We lived in the house during many summers too.) The downstairs carpeting is being changed for the 2018 season. Some of the oriental rugs in the other rooms are, like oriental rugs will be, old, but all of the area rugs are well kept and vacuumed between each of our visiting families. For summer 2018 we have a brand new sofa and two new recliner chairs. So the house does indeed live up to the other reviews, including the letter we received from the tenants the week before the tenant who wrote this review. Concerning how this tenant left the house, furniture was moved about and not restored to its original positions, and the house needed extra cleaning. Obviously, this was not a happy match between house and tenant, and we are sorry for that. We did try our best to "make it right."

Family Vacation 2017

  • 5 of 5

Our large family of eleven had a wonderful week at this beautiful mansion. Plenty of room to roam. Close to everything we wanted to do. Bunganut Lake for the kids, Portland, Old Orchard Beach and even a day trip to Boston!! Took in the water ski show on the town lake and had some very tasty Dirty Dozen Donuts. Would definitely recommend staying in Sanford at the Trafton House. Thanks, George and Tamara Thanks also to Karie. You were very sweet.

Wonderful place off the beaten path

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay here. It is spacious, well-located in downtown Sanford, and pleasant. It's away from the crowds of York and Ogunquit but is a nice base camp for trips there. The local Bunganut lake is especially a gem (only 12 minutes away or so) for not-very-crowded picnics and swimming. The owners and caretakers are wonderful and attentive.

Fit for a "Crincess" ( grandaughter who posed on the front steps in her tiara)

  • 5 of 5

The house is lovely, takes you back to a time you dreamed you lived in! We had a family reception to attend so decided to stay for the week. The beach properties 30 minutes away were outrageously overpriced . Sanford is 30-40 minutes from lots of beaches and beautiful lakes are closer, all highway access .We got to take day trips easily and came home to a lovely comfortable home every night. The rooms are very large, nice porches comfortable furniture. The house is well stocked with all the necessities. The hosts were easily accessible and took care of everything. I will definitely stay here again when we visit Sanford.

Owner's Response: We're so happy that your "Crinsess" found our front porch the perfect place for her photo, You know, for forty years Trafton House was a photography studio. Nearly all of the people in town of a certain age had their high school photos taken there, and every year folks ask us whether they might come in to see the place now. Many still say, "Oh, you're the musicians that live in the Creteau's Studio!"

We would at awe, when first walked in to your beautiful mansion. The interior of the house was amazing and there was plenty of room for all eight of us. We will definitely recommend your place to family and friends.

Thank you so much for sharing with us the history of the house and it was a great joy meeting you both.

Indulge your fantasy to live in a gorgeous restored Victorian home in a small New England former mill town, close to numerous lakes, the Mousam River, white Atlantic Ocean beaches, rocky coast line, and convenient Amtrak service.

At the middle of York County, Trafton House is centrally located to all sites in Southern Maine and New Hampshire: 40 minute drives to historic and lively Portland, ME, and Portsmouth, NH; excellent antiquing and shopping nearby; fresh- and salt-water activities; amusement parks, Old Orchard Beach attractions, and Nubble Lighthouse at York Beach.

In June and July Sanford is the home of the Sanford Mainers, two-time champions of the New England collegiate baseball league. A two-block walk brings you to Goodall Stadium, where you can 'root-root-root for the home team' to blow off steam 2-3 nights a week.

Enjoy the town's restaurants, go up to Shaw's Ridge Farm for first-rate BBQ and their own delicious ice cream, or drive to the next town over, Springvale, ME and enjoy our favorite restaurant, the Bradford Block Bistro. And start your day with Dirty Dozen Donuts, just down the street.

A small forest makes one side of Trafton House feel as if you're in the woods when you wake up in the morning. Large windows in every room scoop in the sunlight.
