Vintage/Modern Cabin Fever! Fun on the Mountain!

Minimum Stay 2 - 3 nights

Overview

About the property

Nestled on 3/4 acre of private forest, amazing sunset sky and star-gazing.

Are the dates you are interested in already booked? Please give me a call as we may have other options. We can't guarantee snow, but we can guarantee a charming cabin for your vacation on Palomar Mountain!

Like to get away from it all but have the luxuries of home? Come away to this delightful, newly remodeled, enchanting, cabin-in-the-woods. Slip back in time with the mountain-milled, cedar log siding and deck. This cabin makes your heart smile!

We have a stone fireplace waiting for you with a rustic mantel claimed from the forest floor. Cozy up in front of the fire on comfortable leather furniture with some vintage antiques woven in.

The modern amenities that we are sure you'll appreciate start with the newly remodeled, fully stocked, kitchen and bath with granite counters and a washer/dryer for your convenience. There is a 50 inch 'Smart TV' to turn on for your favorite music through Pandora, or watch a movie, and enjoy our high speed internet. That has now been enhanced with an Apple TV with so many options including using with your IPhone and IPad. A thermostat controlled propane wall heater warms the cabin up real quick too while you are building a fire in the stone fireplace.

You are welcome to browse from our library of books that take you back in time to days gone by, or some that inspire, intrigue or motivate. When was the last time you played Dominos? We have a collection of games to choose from, plus a few books and toys for the children.

Upstairs there is a master bedroom with a queen bed and reading nook. Close the black-out drapes, turn on the Sound Soother if you'd like, and settle in to sleep in... The loft above the living area has two, comfortable twin beds suitable for children, since an adult can not stand up in the loft. Nightlights, light the stairs. The comfortable futon in the living room is standard size so can now sleep 5. Plus we do have a Pack N Play for your little ones.

Palomar is a place to 'not do' too. Enjoy a barbecue while soaking up the sun on the deck and take in the chorus of birds.

A trip to Palomar is not complete without going to the world famous Observatory. Browse the General Store, have lunch at Mother's Kitchen, and visit the Boucher Lookout. You can take off on a hike on the many miles of trails in the State Park and National Forest or fish in Doane Pond.

There are several 'Field Trips' within walking distance to visit neighbors who raise chickens, turkeys, goats and sheep. One neighbor is a carver, roasts coffee, and has eggs every color of the rainbow.

There are also wonderful day trips from Cabin Fever. However, one couple planned lots of outings but a couple days later, when they were checking out, totally relaxed, said, 'Next time maybe we will venture out of the cabin. It has such a wonderful ambiance and we loved it so much that we just had to stay in the entire time'. We have lots of options waiting for you at our Fun Things to Do link provided on this page, right above those nice Reviews that have come our way. Keep scrolling...

You're invited to be our guest and come away to Cabin Fever!

About Bonnie Phelps

Longtime friends Nathan, and Jason and Julie, have partnered in several 'fix and flips' in San Diego area. As Investors and Realtors, they have enjoyed the challenge of rehabbing, remodeling, breathing new life into very tired properties, and selling them to very happy, new owners. When they came across this fixer on Palomar, they had to have it, but not to 'fix and flip'. This one is a keeper! Do you know of tired, neglected properties? Any tips are appreciated as they are constantly looking for their next 'deal'.

Bonnie Phelps purchased this cabin in 2011

Why Bonnie Phelps chose San Diego County

This is the first property that they have taken on with no intention of ever selling. They love the idea of owning a Vacation Rental and being able to use it when it is not rented. A huge bonus is that there is another fixer cabin on the same property. Already named 'Shady Oaks', it is presently used for storage, patiently waiting for them to wave their magic wand again.

Please stay tuned! Eventually the goal is to have two very unique cabins available for larger groups. Be assured that no construction will happen during your visit. That's a promise!

What makes this cabin unique

Another reason they could not resist owning these two little diamonds-in-the-rough, was the access. It is great to have such good parking when we are treated to a Winter Wonderland.

The property also has some wonderful oaks, firs and cedars with a couple big boulders peppered around the land. There is an amazing chorus of birds to enjoy from the deck.

Their initial goal of creating a 'Vintage, Modern Cabin' has paid off and is appreciated by all. You have the comforts of home, with the vintage touches that remind many of fond visits to Grandparent's homes in days gone by. Folks also have fun seeing the 'Before and After' photos at the cabin, of the progress creating this charming cabin for you to enjoy with new additions all the time. Ah, Cabin Fever is very special! We hope to have you as guests, and invite you to share this link with your friends! Thank you so much!

Guestbook comments from the manager

I'm sad to be leaving today... these few days have been peaceful and this cozy cabin has been just what I'd hoped for. It has every convenience, the privacy and views are wonderful. The place is so clean I could eat off the floor! Can't wait to visit again!

Notes:
You'll love the ambiance of this cozy cabin in the woods! One of our guests had hikes and outings planned for their family but said after a few wonderful days at the cabin, 'next time they might go outside'. It is such a special place, they just decided to stay inside play games, read and do some 'comfort food' cooking! Come away from it all and cook, baking or use the grill. We also provide a list of local and back-country restaurants. Visit the world famous Observatory, hike the miles of trails on Palomar, or build a snowman when we have a winter wonderland. Palomar is a very special place to relax and rejuvenate. We are looking forward to having you as our guest at Cabin Fever.

Total Relaxation.....10 stars!

  • 5 of 5

Thank you Bonnie for allowing us to stay at your cabin! I did over pack as I brought items we may need, but we did not need a thing! You have everything there that anyone would need for their stay.

We travel quite a bit for either business or pleasure and I was a little nervous about this trip. I have not previously used this website to book reservations, nor have we ever been to Palomar Mountain so I was hesitant about our get away. Not only is the reservation process a total breeze, but the directions, the check-in/check-out absolutely easy.......Everything you stated about the cabin and the pictures were 100% accurate....I am amazed and thankful for such a nice, relaxing weekend. Bonnie, thank you so much! We are planning a trip back there over the summer with the kids for a family vacation.

Owner's Response: Oh how fun, our first 10 Star Review! It brings me so much joy to be a part in sharing Cabin Fever with travelers. Your children might enjoy visiting the local farms when you return this summer. We should have at least one more on the Field Trip list with quite a variety of barn yard animals to meet and love on. We've had quite a few guest return multiple times and our first guest recently booked their 7th stay at Cabin Fever so you'll be in good company! The cleaning gals will have everything sparkling and you'll have another fun stay, that's a promise!

Quiet Cabin on Palomar Mountain

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed Friday and Saturday nights at Cabin Fever on Palomar Mountain. The cabin is very nicely decorated with a bear theme, was very clean, and the owner was very attentive to any needs we had. Her suggestions for local activities hooked us up with a couple of local artisans who were very friendly and accommodating! We were about a mile from the local store/restaurant, and 5 miles from the Observatory. All in all, a very relaxing weekend for our Anniversary. A great value for what you get, and the hospitality was top of the line. We will be back next time we choose Palomar Mountain for a getaway!

Owner's Response: Managing this cabin for our son brings lots of joy because every one seems to really love it! Our cleaning gals take such pride in their work and will have it sparkling for your next stay, too! The local little field trips add so much to the adventures while on Palomar. Glad you were able to take them in.

Absolutely Perfect!

  • 5 of 5

Even better than the photos depict! Beautifully updated and cozy cabin, with all the amenities needed for a very comfortable and joyful experience. We loved sitting outside surrounded by beautiful scenery and listening to the sounds of the birds; also barbequing in the evening, and enjoying dinner on the deck before going inside to watch a movie; the fireplace along with the overall decor provided perfect ambiance. The cabin was spotless and had more than what we needed or expected....absolutely great location, close to everything Palomar Mountain has to offer (fishing, hiking, biking, Observatory, etc.) We didn't want to leave and are looking forward to our next visit – thank you Bonnie!

Hidden treasure!

  • 5 of 5

First-off, there are not enough superlatives for this gem in the clouds. As experienced campers, we've come to expect to provide our own amenities and expect minimal resources from any place we visit. This little cabin has it all and more. Highly undervalued and under-advertised,(I hope it stays that way!) this was a perfect staging spot for trout fishing in the surrounding area, but the weather conspired to keep us on the hill and entertained with fabulous little surprises hidden in every nook and cranny! Books, board games, every cooking implement you could need, it even has a dishwasher, fer cryin' out loud! Super comfy for 4 adults, the floor plan can be a little challenging for someone who may be ambulatory impaired, as the stairs are an engineering marvel in themselves, but a fold out futon on the bottom floor can fix that. This is kid friendly with a loft that just adds to the adventure kids of all ages will love.Comfortably furnished and by no means a 'backwoods' survival retreat-this rates up with deluxe high roller suites just down the road. My son fond this on line after we changed destinations at the last minute based on weather reports and took a risk, only to hit the jackpot with this wonderfully engineered and fully realized architectural marvel. I'm a retired aerospace engineer and can appreciate the execution of handiwork, craftsmanship and creative interior design that went into creating the perfect home-away-from -home vacation. Thanks to the owners for such a lovely experience and sharing your piece of heaven with us for a week. I'll probably be an idiot and tell all my friends (okay maybe brag a little bit) but, this cabin is on my radar to use for exploring North County and surrounding areas with the privacy and sterling experiences you simply cannot get in a hotel, no matter how expensive. Do me a favour and keep it a secret, but come visit and experience it for yourself. You're welcome!

Relaxing, inviting, cozy, perfect for me

  • 2 of 5

Easy parking which is important. Fabulous ladies who clean and will run small errands. Need small wood and newspaper to be provided to start daily fire. Supposedly wood fire starters but hidden in the greenery on mantle

Could only get Netflix's so not sure of cable but wifi fine

Will definitely return...maybe next October for Fall colors

Owner's Response: It was nice for you that the cleaning gals made themselves available to bring in your luggage, put away your groceries, build a fire, make up the living room futon so you didn't have to deal with stairs, and tend to your needs. Nancy said she went over each morning to stoke the fire and check on you. As we state in the marketing and on the 'Tips for your Trip' provided, Palomar does not have access to cable. We are glad the Smart TV worked well and there was a good library of DVD's to choose from. It was puzzling that you stated in the review that the cabin was "perfect for you" and you plan to return, so I think maybe our only 2 star review in the four years we have been renting Cabin Fever, might have been an error?

Looking for Things to Do from Cabin Fever?

We have lots of options waiting for you to fill your days. We provide a 'Tips for your Trip' when you book your stay. This includes an "Adventure Map" for easy directions to all to see and do on Palomar.

When you scroll through our reviews, you will see several guests planned busy outings, decided instead to stay right at the cabin. They do some bird watching, stargazing, reading, resting and re-energizing to return home totally refreshed and renewed.

However, there is lots of old-fashioned fun available for you from the cabin.

Two farms are walk-able from Cabin Fever. Save your table scraps for chickens, goats and sheep. Like fresh ground, organic coffee? You'll find that waiting for you along with eggs, goat cheese, milk and yarn.

Our only 'town' is Mother's Kitchen, a General Store, and one of the smallest Post Offices in the United States (no lines and friendly service). Mother's has been serving up smiles and very delicious vegetarian food since the mid 1970's. They have delicious fresh baked desserts and ice cream, too. They do have limited hours so be sure to check their website provided in our 'Tips'.

You'll find T-shirts, souvenirs, wonderful books written about our favorite mountain, and gifts from around the world at our General Store.

You might decide to soar high above the trees on a zipline, recently opened at the La Jolla Reservation. Lots of rave reviews on Yelp.

A stay on Palomar would not be complete without a trip to the World Famous Observatory. If you can go on a Saturday, they occasionally have a behind the scenes tour that takes you out on the catwalk 50 feet about the ground, as the dome turns. Take your camera!

Bring your fishing license and gear with you and fish at Lake Henshaw, or get what you need there and fish at Doane Pond in the State Park. 20 miles of hiking trails, see fabulous views, Indian grinding holes in the big rocks and so much more.

The State Park has a day use fee of $8.00 per car at the time of this post. Be sure to see their little 'museum' and you might pick up their map of the many trails. Take a picnic lunch and settle in at one of the picnic tables at Silver Crest or around the pond.

The State Park also has public access to see Boucher Lookout, one of the re-furbished and often-staffed fire lookouts in the county. Enjoy the amazing views across the county to the islands dotting the Pacific. When the lookout is open, you can climb the stairs and see the volunteers in action keeping an eye out for smokes.

In addition to the mountain activities, your 'Tips' provide links to several local casinos and their many restaurants, shows, and even a 'Lazy River' and swim-up bar at Harrah's Rincon. There are also links to other great restaurants the locals patronize as often as we can.

You might take a day trip to the old Gold Town of Julian for shopping. In the Fall they have Apple Days and often special events.

There are many wineries to choose from. The closest being in Valley Center or Warner Springs. Many in Temecula where you have lots of antiquing available throughout a fun ‘Old Town’. Temecula is the place to go for Balloon rides, too.

Valley Center is just 30 minutes away and home to Bates Brothers Nut Farm. Dried nuts and fruit, petting farm, delightful gift shops.

Borrego Springs is another fun day trip to see the free-standing art throughout the town by Galleta Meadows. Be sure and pop in at the Fudge and Ice Cream store! Oh, and the largest State Park in the Country is in Borrego Springs. Very nice museum, book store and great place to cool off and learn more about the desert. (Borrego is HOT in the summer!)

From our sunset lookouts along the public roads, you have beautiful views over San Diego County and see the ribbon of ocean on clear days. Look carefully and you will see Catalina, San Clemente and the Coronado Islands.

Like to go to the beach? It is about an hour and 15 minutes.

On the mountain for a wedding? Cabin Fever is walking distance to the Palomar Lodge. Bailey’s Resort or Upper Meadow Lodge are both only about 2 minutes driving time from the cabin.
