Are the dates you are interested in already booked? Please give me a call as we may have other options. We can't guarantee snow, but we can guarantee a charming cabin for your vacation on Palomar Mountain!
Like to get away from it all but have the luxuries of home? Come away to this delightful, newly remodeled, enchanting, cabin-in-the-woods. Slip back in time with the mountain-milled, cedar log siding and deck. This cabin makes your heart smile!
We have a stone fireplace waiting for you with a rustic mantel claimed from the forest floor. Cozy up in front of the fire on comfortable leather furniture with some vintage antiques woven in.
The modern amenities that we are sure you'll appreciate start with the newly remodeled, fully stocked, kitchen and bath with granite counters and a washer/dryer for your convenience. There is a 50 inch 'Smart TV' to turn on for your favorite music through Pandora, or watch a movie, and enjoy our high speed internet. That has now been enhanced with an Apple TV with so many options including using with your IPhone and IPad. A thermostat controlled propane wall heater warms the cabin up real quick too while you are building a fire in the stone fireplace.
You are welcome to browse from our library of books that take you back in time to days gone by, or some that inspire, intrigue or motivate. When was the last time you played Dominos? We have a collection of games to choose from, plus a few books and toys for the children.
Upstairs there is a master bedroom with a queen bed and reading nook. Close the black-out drapes, turn on the Sound Soother if you'd like, and settle in to sleep in... The loft above the living area has two, comfortable twin beds suitable for children, since an adult can not stand up in the loft. Nightlights, light the stairs. The comfortable futon in the living room is standard size so can now sleep 5. Plus we do have a Pack N Play for your little ones.
Palomar is a place to 'not do' too. Enjoy a barbecue while soaking up the sun on the deck and take in the chorus of birds.
A trip to Palomar is not complete without going to the world famous Observatory. Browse the General Store, have lunch at Mother's Kitchen, and visit the Boucher Lookout. You can take off on a hike on the many miles of trails in the State Park and National Forest or fish in Doane Pond.
There are several 'Field Trips' within walking distance to visit neighbors who raise chickens, turkeys, goats and sheep. One neighbor is a carver, roasts coffee, and has eggs every color of the rainbow.
There are also wonderful day trips from Cabin Fever. However, one couple planned lots of outings but a couple days later, when they were checking out, totally relaxed, said, 'Next time maybe we will venture out of the cabin. It has such a wonderful ambiance and we loved it so much that we just had to stay in the entire time'. We have lots of options waiting for you at our Fun Things to Do link provided on this page, right above those nice Reviews that have come our way. Keep scrolling...
You're invited to be our guest and come away to Cabin Fever!
Longtime friends Nathan, and Jason and Julie, have partnered in several 'fix and flips' in San Diego area. As Investors and Realtors, they have enjoyed the challenge of rehabbing, remodeling, breathing new life into very tired properties, and selling them to very happy, new owners. When they came across this fixer on Palomar, they had to have it, but not to 'fix and flip'. This one is a keeper! Do you know of tired, neglected properties? Any tips are appreciated as they are constantly looking for their next 'deal'.
Bonnie Phelps purchased this cabin in 2011
This is the first property that they have taken on with no intention of ever selling. They love the idea of owning a Vacation Rental and being able to use it when it is not rented. A huge bonus is that there is another fixer cabin on the same property. Already named 'Shady Oaks', it is presently used for storage, patiently waiting for them to wave their magic wand again.
Please stay tuned! Eventually the goal is to have two very unique cabins available for larger groups. Be assured that no construction will happen during your visit. That's a promise!
Another reason they could not resist owning these two little diamonds-in-the-rough, was the access. It is great to have such good parking when we are treated to a Winter Wonderland.
The property also has some wonderful oaks, firs and cedars with a couple big boulders peppered around the land. There is an amazing chorus of birds to enjoy from the deck.
Their initial goal of creating a 'Vintage, Modern Cabin' has paid off and is appreciated by all. You have the comforts of home, with the vintage touches that remind many of fond visits to Grandparent's homes in days gone by. Folks also have fun seeing the 'Before and After' photos at the cabin, of the progress creating this charming cabin for you to enjoy with new additions all the time. Ah, Cabin Fever is very special! We hope to have you as guests, and invite you to share this link with your friends! Thank you so much!
Wonderful views and lots of birds - woodpeckers, chickadees, others. Great weather and the cabin is just great - cozy, comfy beds, everything you need -
We had everything we needed for a family with two small kids (it included a high chair!). Will choose this over a hotel any day. Very warm and comfortable in winter months.
Everything about our stay was awesome. From the cabin to the weather. Very peaceful and Great set up for young children
We loved our stay at Cabin Fever. Everything was new and modern, yet still had the perfect cabin vibe. Internet worked, grill worked, the patio is a huge bonus. Would absolutely stay here again.
Beautiful cabin that contained everything you needed. Bonnie was marvelous. The weather turned warmer than expected and she provided us with an extra fan and cooling unit. She even took me and my daughters to some empty cabins to look for treasures. Great hospitality! She treated us like family.
Thank you, Bonnie ! We so thoroughly enjoyed this getaway weekend. The cabin is delightfully welcoming and we just chilled. Especially loved the quietness and deck where we star gazed and bird watched.
We plan on coming back for every season and are spreading the good news about the beautiful mountain. Such a pleasant surprise to see such greenery in San Diego County.
Thank for your warm hospitality and the cute bears and accessories. Great job of making it "homey" !
Best to you!
San Marcos, CA
We stayed at Cabin Fever for 3 nights in July - myself, my husband, my daughter (4.5) and son (1.5). The cabin was clean and well maintained, the wi-fi worked easily, and all the dishes you could need are provided. My daughter loved the loft. I was thrilled to find a baby gate under the stairs so that my son couldn't go up without us - the stairs are very large and steep, so if you have a toddler, look for the baby gate! The deck was absolutely amazing. The views were great, the weather was great, the furniture and beds comfortable. It was lovely to be able to cook and eat our food at our convenience, and the cabin was isolated enough that I didn't worry about my kids being too loud and disturbing lots of neighbors when they went out at 6 am on the deck in the morning. The one thing I didn't expect (but should have; it is on a mountain!) is that other than the deck, my son wasn't really able to go outside and play because there is no flat land to speak of on the property. That was a bit hard with a toddler, but again, it's on a mountain. We did a day trip to Oceanside beach, and went to the Palomar Observatory and Doane Pond, all of which all 4 of us enjoyed. Thanks for having this rental - we enjoyed our trip!
Looking for Things to Do from Cabin Fever?
We have lots of options waiting for you to fill your days. We provide a 'Tips for your Trip' when you book your stay. This includes an "Adventure Map" for easy directions to all to see and do on Palomar.
When you scroll through our reviews, you will see several guests planned busy outings, decided instead to stay right at the cabin. They do some bird watching, stargazing, reading, resting and re-energizing to return home totally refreshed and renewed.
However, there is lots of old-fashioned fun available for you from the cabin.
Two farms are walk-able from Cabin Fever. Save your table scraps for chickens, goats and sheep. Like fresh ground, organic coffee? You'll find that waiting for you along with eggs, goat cheese, milk and yarn.
Our only 'town' is Mother's Kitchen, a General Store, and one of the smallest Post Offices in the United States (no lines and friendly service). Mother's has been serving up smiles and very delicious vegetarian food since the mid 1970's. They have delicious fresh baked desserts and ice cream, too. They do have limited hours so be sure to check their website provided in our 'Tips'.
You'll find T-shirts, souvenirs, wonderful books written about our favorite mountain, and gifts from around the world at our General Store.
You might decide to soar high above the trees on a zipline, recently opened at the La Jolla Reservation. Lots of rave reviews on Yelp.
A stay on Palomar would not be complete without a trip to the World Famous Observatory. If you can go on a Saturday, they occasionally have a behind the scenes tour that takes you out on the catwalk 50 feet about the ground, as the dome turns. Take your camera!
Bring your fishing license and gear with you and fish at Lake Henshaw, or get what you need there and fish at Doane Pond in the State Park. 20 miles of hiking trails, see fabulous views, Indian grinding holes in the big rocks and so much more.
The State Park has a day use fee of $8.00 per car at the time of this post. Be sure to see their little 'museum' and you might pick up their map of the many trails. Take a picnic lunch and settle in at one of the picnic tables at Silver Crest or around the pond.
The State Park also has public access to see Boucher Lookout, one of the re-furbished and often-staffed fire lookouts in the county. Enjoy the amazing views across the county to the islands dotting the Pacific. When the lookout is open, you can climb the stairs and see the volunteers in action keeping an eye out for smokes.
In addition to the mountain activities, your 'Tips' provide links to several local casinos and their many restaurants, shows, and even a 'Lazy River' and swim-up bar at Harrah's Rincon. There are also links to other great restaurants the locals patronize as often as we can.
You might take a day trip to the old Gold Town of Julian for shopping. In the Fall they have Apple Days and often special events.
There are many wineries to choose from. The closest being in Valley Center or Warner Springs. Many in Temecula where you have lots of antiquing available throughout a fun ‘Old Town’. Temecula is the place to go for Balloon rides, too.
Valley Center is just 30 minutes away and home to Bates Brothers Nut Farm. Dried nuts and fruit, petting farm, delightful gift shops.
Borrego Springs is another fun day trip to see the free-standing art throughout the town by Galleta Meadows. Be sure and pop in at the Fudge and Ice Cream store! Oh, and the largest State Park in the Country is in Borrego Springs. Very nice museum, book store and great place to cool off and learn more about the desert. (Borrego is HOT in the summer!)
From our sunset lookouts along the public roads, you have beautiful views over San Diego County and see the ribbon of ocean on clear days. Look carefully and you will see Catalina, San Clemente and the Coronado Islands.
Like to go to the beach? It is about an hour and 15 minutes.
On the mountain for a wedding? Cabin Fever is walking distance to the Palomar Lodge. Bailey’s Resort or Upper Meadow Lodge are both only about 2 minutes driving time from the cabin.
