Backwater Macs is a charming beach house with four bedrooms and two baths situated on the sound/icw side of sunset beach. After a day on the beach, golfing or shopping, just relax and spend your evenings in a rocking chair on the screened in porch watching the sun set over the marsh. Backwater Mac’s has one of the best sunset views on the island.
With a dock out back you can use the kayak to explore the calm backwaters of sunset beach island. You can also paddle to the uninhabited Bird Island to look for turtle nests and the ever popular kindred spirit mailbox. (the mailbox is filled with notebooks, pens and pencils along with the stories and tales of all the travelers who’ve journeyed to this place. Each entry begins with the phrase “dear kindred spirit.”)
The beach is an easy 5 minute walk or a 1 minute bike ride (there are 4 bikes available under the house). The expansive beach is sure to please everyone in your group. The 40th street access is the last access path on the west side of the island and is very quiet. Young adults can easily walk to the pier to shop or drop a hook from the pier. But if that’s not your thing, then plop your chair down, get out your book and just breathe. Young children can easily be watched while they run wild on the beach.
Things to do?
Golf: Sea Trail and Oyster Bay are minutes away and there are at least 10 other golf courses within 15 minutes.
Putt putt golf: is at the base of the inland side of the bridge. Our kids grew up playing there every time we went to the beach. Now it boasts a grill with an awesome menu and is very child friendly.
Fresh seafood: Bills Seafood is on the inland side of the bridge and has been an icon at Sunset Beach for years. Crabby Oddwaters is up the outside stairs and is a fun restaurant/bar that overlooks a creek. If you go to Crabbys, be sure to check out the biggest local shell collection we’ve ever seen.
Shopping: First, there is Island Breeze on the inland side of the bridge. You’ll find high end trendy clothes and accessories for both men and women. An outlet mall is located in north myrtle beach about 20 minutes away. Barefoot Landing hosts cute shops and restaurants on the ICW. Or head to Myrtle Beach for the crowds and shops.
