Overview

About the property

4 BR 2BA with view of sound and ICW

Backwater Macs is a charming beach house with four bedrooms and two baths situated on the sound/icw side of sunset beach. After a day on the beach, golfing or shopping, just relax and spend your evenings in a rocking chair on the screened in porch watching the sun set over the marsh. Backwater Mac’s has one of the best sunset views on the island.

With a dock out back you can use the kayak to explore the calm backwaters of sunset beach island. You can also paddle to the uninhabited Bird Island to look for turtle nests and the ever popular kindred spirit mailbox. (the mailbox is filled with notebooks, pens and pencils along with the stories and tales of all the travelers who’ve journeyed to this place. Each entry begins with the phrase “dear kindred spirit.”)

The beach is an easy 5 minute walk or a 1 minute bike ride (there are 4 bikes available under the house). The expansive beach is sure to please everyone in your group. The 40th street access is the last access path on the west side of the island and is very quiet. Young adults can easily walk to the pier to shop or drop a hook from the pier. But if that’s not your thing, then plop your chair down, get out your book and just breathe. Young children can easily be watched while they run wild on the beach.

Things to do?

Golf: Sea Trail and Oyster Bay are minutes away and there are at least 10 other golf courses within 15 minutes.

Putt putt golf: is at the base of the inland side of the bridge. Our kids grew up playing there every time we went to the beach. Now it boasts a grill with an awesome menu and is very child friendly.

Fresh seafood: Bills Seafood is on the inland side of the bridge and has been an icon at Sunset Beach for years. Crabby Oddwaters is up the outside stairs and is a fun restaurant/bar that overlooks a creek. If you go to Crabbys, be sure to check out the biggest local shell collection we’ve ever seen.

Shopping: First, there is Island Breeze on the inland side of the bridge. You’ll find high end trendy clothes and accessories for both men and women. An outlet mall is located in north myrtle beach about 20 minutes away. Barefoot Landing hosts cute shops and restaurants on the ICW. Or head to Myrtle Beach for the crowds and shops.

About Harry and Mary Jane McCracken

Harry and Mary Jane McCracken have lived in Cary, NC for 30 years and have vacationed at Sunset Beach for the last 28 years. Their two boys grew up crabbing on the dock, riding their bikes all over the island and swimming and surfing in the ocean.

Harry and Mary Jane McCracken purchased this house in 1985

Why Harry and Mary Jane McCracken chose Southern Coast

This is a very special place for our family. It is far removed from the hustle and bustle but still close enough to Myrtle Beach for some shopping or rainy day visits to the aquarium and other tourist spots. Golf courses galore...

It's a great value for your family.

What makes this house unique

Boat dock. Unobstructed view of the marsh and sunset. Great neighbors. One of the widest beach you will find in NC. The beach faces south and is growing in size. You can easily walk to Bird Island for very private sunning or picnicking. Our end of the beach is lightly population compared to other locations on the island.

Sunset Retreat

  • 5 of 5

This was the perfect getaway for a long weekend! The home is in a quiet area and close to the ocean. It is very nice and roomy so everyone could have their own privacy when needed. There were 7 adults and each bedroom had plenty of room with dressers and a small closet. The large showers are great. The screened-in deck over-looking the waterway is nice for porch coffee and watching the sunset; the upper sun deck was nice for quiet time and star gazing. There's a large kitchen with standard table ware, utensils and cookware, but bring your own bottle opener for soft-drinks or bottles with caps. Lowe's foods and Foodlion is about a 10-15 minute drive. The homeowners responded very quickly to answer any questions. I would suggest a mattress topper; the beds are firm. Otherwise, it was a wonderful weekend. We will definitely return!

This was our 3rd stay in the last 3 years at Backwater Mac's and we love it. Great location, fantastic view, ideal accommodations, just what we wanted. We've had great and timely communication with the owner, too. It is always clean and well appointed and we have recommended the property to friends and family.

Sunset Beach NC Septmeber Arrival

  • 3 of 5

We made a last minute reservation for Sunset Beach due to an unanticipated change of plans. We contacted several owners on a Tuesday for arrival on Wednesday. The owners of this property responded to us quickly and were great to work with., After a phone conversation with the owner my wife decided to book their property.

The house provides a great view of the marsh and a nice quiet setting, exactly what we were looking for. The walk to the beach was more than five minutes as listed, but it was definitely a reasonable walk. The house was well stocked and provided us with everything we needed.

There are a few things in the house that need attention to make this a true five star rental:

1) There were holes in a few screens on the porch and one was torn and on the floor. Therefore, we were unable to use the porch because it got buggy, especially at night.

2) The carpet was stained and in need of cleaning

3) The house had a musty smell, possibly from being closed up. We got some Febreeze which helped but didn't solve the issue.

4) The sliding glass door to the porch would not lock and had to be secured with a stick in the track. The door could still be forced open.

If these items are addressed I would give the house a five star rating.

Beautiful view and quiet!

  • 3 of 5

I rented "Sound Side With Sunset View" for a work retreat. The price is in the same category as other properties with similar views and size. The house is older with two showers (no bathtubs), 4 nice size bedrooms and it has a floor plan with the living/kitchen in the middle and the bedrooms are two on each side of the living/kitchen area.

The kitchen is not as well equipped with cooking supplies as I think it should have been. Having stayed at probably 20 various beach house rentals in NC/SC over many years, there are certain items that are always in the inventory. We cooked while at the house and found items not available.

The view is marvelous!! It was off season, so it was extra quiet, but because this home is at the very last street on Sunset Beach, facing the bay, it was super nice.

Overall I would recommend this rental but for us, it ended up not being as I thought.

* It advertises 4 bikes. Not one was in good working order. I was able to ride one with the tire rubbing the fender but the seat was rusted and I could not raise it at all. The other 3 bikes were with flats tires, broken seats and chain off. I chose this property over others because of the bikes.

* I brought all of my supplies to make breakfast smoothies. I eat these every morning. The blender did not have the top, only the base. I have never been to a beach house without a blender, ever. This was a real bummer to me.

* No ceiling fans in the bedrooms and when I went to use the (one and only) fan, it is broken and tilts forward wanting to fall down.

To sum up, the owner seems super nice and when we found that the front door would not close, he had a locksmith out right away! Also, the wind had blown in the porch screens and he was going to have someone come for that too, but we said we were fine with that. When I told him about the blender, he said he thought there was one there and if not, he would put it on the list to restock. The bottom line for me, is that for $200 per day, I should not have to ask for repairs and spend time on the phone talking with locksmiths, repair people etc. We were there to work until it was time to relax and when it came time to relax and grab the bikes, I hauled all of them out of the shed, off hooks on the wall, and found none to work. By this time, it was our last day and I did not want to deal with it.

Love the location and view. If you have items that are important to you, verify with the owner that all is good, before coming.

Perfect view

  • 5 of 5

We have been to Sunset before, but have never stayed on the marsh/sound side. It was soooo beautiful and the location of the house is on a quiet street. The house had all we needed and a large kitchen. Any questions we had the owners got back to us via email very quickly.

Perfect beach house. AMAZING views!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Backwater Macs with another family of 4 (4 adults, 4 kids total). The house was perfect for us. Nice, but not so nice that we had to constantly be worried about what the kids might do. There's a great screened-in porch and the views of Bull Creek and the intercostal are unparalleled, especially at sunset. We're hoping to return next summer. As an aside, the owners were very easy to work with and accommodated some extra requests we had.
