About this property

Long Range Unobstructed Mountain Views in a Well Appointed Home

Our home is located at nearly 3700' in elevation and on over an acre of land in the well established gated community of Hurricane Ridge. We spent over 6 months renovating this entire home from top to bottom, literally. While it is not brand new, this mountain home looks great. All three floors of this homewere gutted and renovated back to the studs and even expanded in some cases. We looked for every opportunity to make this great house even better; including the addition of a third bedroom, additional viewing areas and private deck to the existing downstairs bedroom, an expanded downstairs bathroom to include both a shower and large soaking tub (no jets), new cabinetry for both kitchen and bathrooms, fixtures, and countertops The entire home has been furnished locally by the High Country Furnishings and Design store located in Waynesville, NC. A deck was added to ensure you can enjoy probably the best feature of the house, the view from the outside. The deck wraps the east, south and west sides of the house. For entertainment we have made every effort to meet the needs of all vacationers. Every bedrooms includes a 39 inch wall mounted Toshiba HDTV and a 49 inch Insignia 1080i HDTV in the loft. Each TV has Directv whole home DVR satellite service. It is never fun to go on vacation to discover they don't have the channels you watch at home and you have to miss that favorite sports event you were planning to watch or special show on PBS or Hallmark. The Directv service includes over 160 channels, as well as the NFL Ticket for football fans out there.

Our loft is a great viewing and game area with a new double size futon couch, a 4'x8' Connelly tournament pool table with all the accessories, a Foosball table and a 49 inch Insignia 1080i HDTV with Directv DVR satellite service. Children games and children DVD's are offered so the little ones have something to watch if you are not in the mood to watch another Disney movie for the 10th time!

On the main floor, the kitchen has stainless steel appliances, Kraftmaid cabinetry, granite counter tops and Moen fixtures. We paid great attention to the type of cookware that would be in the kitchen only using cookware we want to use when on vacation. After paying good money to stay in vacation rentals it was awful having to cook with poor quality pots and pans and plastic cooking items. We did our best to buy the most affordable high quality items to help create that perfect dining experience. Enjoy Crate and Barrel dishware, stainless steel cookware, wine glasses and a Cuisinart coffee maker to make that perfect brew. While you are cooking in the kitchen family members can pull up a bar stool at the middle island and you can still be in the middle of the fun and enjoy the great mountain view!

The main floor bedroom includes a large king bed and is topped with a pillowtop Beautyrest mattress. Also for entertainment the main floor master bedroom includes a wall mounted 39 inch Toshiba HDTV with Directv DVR satellite service. The main floor bath ( shower with a tub) has tile flooring, cabinetry with granite counter tops and Moen fixtures. The main floor living area sits beside two 8' sliding glass doors and a wall of all new Pella windows, all the way to the top of the cathedral ceiling, that provides a spectacular view from every location on the main floor and upper loft. The living room is comfortably furnished to take in the views and enjoy the fireplace. This has easy on and off propane gas fire logs for that true mountain feel. No need to drag large logs in from the outside when your cozy ambiance is can be started with the flip of a switch. The dining area includes a large farm house table. A large picture window provides a stunning view from the dining table of Crabtree mountain. The entire main floor is surrounded by a large deck with spectacular views from every location and four solid wood Troutman rockers to sit, relax and enjoy the true essence of the mountains.

The lower floor includes a large king sleigh bed, a Beautyrest mattress and 600 thread count sheets are just the beginning of comfort for this private hideaway. This room also includes its own sitting area with a comfy & cozy beige couch to enjoy the private view of Crabtree mountain through the 8' sliding glass door that opens onto your own private deck with easy access to the 79 inch x 79 inch Leisure Bay hot tub for four. This master suite will definitely fulfill the need for your own private space while vacationing with family, you will love this private spot. Enjoy reading a book on your private deck area with no interruptions from guests upstairs and private access to the outside. A 39 inch Toshiba HDTV with Directv DVR satellite service is in the bedroom for your viewing enjoyment. The downstairs bath has been remodeled and expanded to include a large stand alone shower, a large soaking soaking tub (no jets) and oversized vanity with granite countertops and new Moen fixtures. The adjoining small bunk room includes two bunk beds to accommodate four people and has direct access to the downstairs bath as well. Like all the other bedrooms in the house it also has a 39 inch wall mounted Toshiba HDTV with Directv DVR satellite service.

Want to roast marshmallows and make smores, add real wood logs ( provided) to the fire pit and enjoy the night stars? Outside you can have a hearty wood fire in the fire pit or relax in the hot tub with mountain views from all sides. Hot tub is accessible for all guests from the outside or directly off your private balcony downstairs.

We are unable to host smokers, vapers or e-cigarette users including those that do so outside. We host many people including our children with severe asthma and allergies and they know from flare- ups if someone has stayed that smokes. Also our neighbors know our policy and will call us if they see a guest smoking and yes, even outside. Just please be respectful and stay somewhere else if you fall in that category. The same for pets, no pet allowed or none can be brought up or if a local friend wants to visit you with their dog please make sure their pet does not visit with them while staying at the cabin. Once again, neighbors watch out for us and let us know.

A note about the drive up in winter. Our first snow has been as early as October 31 and as late as mid March. For advance rentals during December through March we absolutely require 4wd/awd and snow chains. No exceptions whatsoever. Our roads are gravel and uncleared when it snows and due to trees shading the roads the ice on the road is very slow to melt at this altitude. You do not want to get stuck on the mountain and walk up with your kids hauling luggage (we have) or stuck at the house when you can't leave due to ice ( we have.) For our guests safety we absolutely require it and we will not offer refunds for weather. If you do not have mountain driving experience I would not book in the winter. If you have snow chains and 4wd you will be fine with access and won't need a refund. Please do not send us a reservation request if you don't have those. We do require 4wd or awd year round due to the steepness of the drive up on gravel roads. The road gets muddy in rainy weather and a 2wd truck can get stuck. If someone has 2wd in your party there is an area they can park lower on the mountain. Finally as we share a private road with our neighbors two cars max are allowed at the cabin.

Finally this house is great for a family or one or two couples. The house is not huge and due to our sharing the road with our neighbor, multiple people staying is not ideal. If you are looking for a place for a group of individuals in different cars this is not the place.

Great Stay
We enjoyed our week in the mountains. The house was really nice and the views can't be beat. We loved watching the fog and mist rise through the mountains each morning. The house had everything we needed and was well located for our excursions to GSM National Park and Asheville, North Carolina.

About the host

Host profile image
Jennifer and I are native Floridians and live just north of Orlando with our three children; Evie (15), Eston (14) and Ellie (12). After vacationing in western North Carolina for most of my childhood, Jennifer and I were lucky enough to live in Waynesville for several years after we graduated from college and getting marred in 1995. After moving back to Florida in the late 90's we continued to vacation in western North Carolina. Years ago we decided to enter the vacation rental business here in Florida to allow our family and other families to enjoy the beautiful beaches of Florida. We have really enjoyed running our vacation rental business and had decided early on that we would like to one day expand that business to include a home in the western North Carolina mountains. In the fall of 2012 that vision became a reality with our purchase of this beautiful home near Waynesville, NC. We stay several times a year ourselves as there is no place we would rather be (truly.)

It was our intention as we rebuilt this home to also use this for our own family just like our other vacation rental properties and for that reason we have tried to make sure that no detail is left out so that we along with you can enjoy this beautiful location. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do. Every time we are there we ask why are we not living here permanently!

Why they chose this property

We searched for many years for just the right property. In 2010 we purchased a vacant lot not to far from Waynesville with the intention of one day building a vacation rental property but it did not take too long for us to realize that due to the rising cost of building materials it would take many more years than we first thought for us to realize our dream. While taking one of our annual vacations in the fall of 2012 with some friends of ours who also like to vacation in the western North Carolina mountains, we met with a friend of theirs, who just happened to be a real estate agent. After spending a few minutes talking about what we were looking for in vacation home, he offered to show us a property that he thought might just fit the bill. He actually showed us two properties and honestly, the first was one we requested and we could have saved some time if we had just trusted the expert because as soon as we saw this house we knew it was the one. It had everything; a well established gated neighborhood with few houses, plenty of acreage, a great floor plan with plenty of space for a family vacation home and oh yeah; great elevation at 3648' that provides a spectacular view of the great smoky mountains. It also had what we were not looking for- no small lots with houses looming all around as we had seen in other popular areas not too far away. The house is close enough to jump on the interstate and not have to curve through abundant roads and far enough away to not hear any noise other than sounds of nature.

What makes this property unique

The view from this property is just unbelievable and we fell in love with it the moment we saw it. Truly every contractor, guest, neighbor, etc. that comes to the house says wow! that is one of the top views they have seen. A friend that lives in Asheville came over and said you just don't find many houses with that kind of view. The other thing that I think that is different from our house compared to some rentals I have seen is the furnishings and the décor. This is not a typical rental home. We could not stand the yellow wood prevalent in so many rentals so every door and trim was double stained, sanded and restained to the exact color we wanted. The furniture is well appointed and the house is decorated without clutter. Look at the photos, you can tell a difference. Most every item has been purchased locally to attain the mountain feel with a touch of elegance. The house itself had a great layout with lots of potential for a great family vacation home and the property provided plenty of privacy as well. The deck is so large and roomy, that is the best place to pull up a chair and enjoy your stay. The entrance to Hurricane Ridge is located exactly one mile from exit 15 off Interstate 40, so it provides easy access to Waynesville within 15 minutes and Asheville within 30 minutes but at the same time you can feel like you are so far away from it all. At nearly 3700' in elevation it stays very cool even in the hottest part of summer so it is so much different from most places in the southeastern United States that you may have experienced in the summer. We have air conditioning throughout the house and ceiling fans in every room except the bunk bed room, but you will find you may not need to turn it on as we have such cool breezes at this elevation.
