We are cancelling our vrbo listing. Please see our other web-site under Amen Mountain Homes. Do not make any contacts through or use vrbo. Feel free to call me directly.

Both renters and owners are getting charged new fees and expenses without warning. We do not use or support on-line booking. Please avoid vrbo use.

Escape & enjoy the mountains, summer or winter. At 10,000 feet, bordered by the national forest ... but only a 25 minute drive to town for supplies. They even have a Walmart there. Sweet!

A short 4 mile drive to ski the slopes (Monarch Mountain) in winter.

IF YOU ARE AN AIRPLANE OWNER OR AVIATION ENTHUSIAST, PLEASE READ THE END OF THIS DESCRIPTION AREA ...

We are located on Main Street. We have another deck that hangs over the stream from our empty lots next door, down those rocky stairs. A great lunch spot.

Update - 2017 - - we are receiving a LOT of inquiries. While I will respond to the home's availability by email (we maintain an in-house calendar .... not vrbo's), your reservation is NOT confirmed until we receive your deposit and you receive a written confirmation from our reservation manager. Call me directly if needed. Nelson Amen 210-834-1991

UPDATE APRIL 2017 - - we are installing an arctic entry on the side porch. The exterior storage closet is removed, and wall sections are stored on the front porch. Please pardon our "under construction" condition.

UPDATE MARCH 2017 - - while are large deck over the stream remains usable (and very nice), the large amounts of heavy snow this winter have collapsed (as in ... destroyed) the rear exterior deck shown in the 3rd photo. Please keep clear of the broken lumber. Another summer project for your gracious host!

About Nelson Amen - the owner, San Antonio, Texas 210-834-1991

This home has been in our family for over 30 years. A great escape from the 'rush' of life and the summer heat in August! We have enjoyed many skiing vacations here during snow season. Monarch Mountain day and 1/2 day downhill ski rates are pretty thrifty, and the runs are numerous.

Nelson Amen - the owner, San Antonio, Texas 210-834-1991 purchased this house in 1980

Why Nelson Amen - the owner, San Antonio, Texas 210-834-1991 chose South Central

Bring a book and relax. Need internet and cell phone service? Do you want 5 star accommodations? Then our mountain home is not for you.

What makes this house unique

Open kitchen area and large living room welcome your family. Lots of deck outside to enjoy. There is a mountain stream on our south property line. There is a separate secluded deck down at the stream, overhanging the water. Access is through our empty lots next door. A great lunch spot and fun place to cool off.

We enjoyed this clean mountain home. It is great for Monarch skiing and other local activities. Everything was as advertised and without any hassle. We would stay here again.

We enjoyed this place!

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed this place! It was close to Monarch and we loved the space we had. We also appreciated the guy who plows the area since we had so much snow! It was incredibly fun! Would love to come back and visit!

Amen House, excellent place to stay

  • 5 of 5

I stayed for a couple of days with the owner, and thoroughly enjoyed the time there and in the local area. The cabin is well kept, comfortable, and clean. It's a great place to stay to enjoy the outdoors activities in the area, and a wonderful mountain stream on the property (complete w/ stream-side deck). I'd definitely stay here when I come back to the area someday.

Bat infested

  • 3 of 5

This place was great, other than the bats that are living in the house.... We found one our first evening there and proceeded to find more than 7 more. After dark they will fly around and disturb you. This is a major problem that needs to be fixed before others stay at this place. Other than that issue the Amen River House was in a great location and the river was beautiful. The house was fully stocked.

Owner's Response: The owners request that this specific review remain on our vrbo posting as originally written, and also ask that future renters read our response completely. We have never experienced bats inside our home and this was very disturbing to me and my wife. And it gets even worse (see below). Bottom line: I will be mailing a full refund to the renter for their July 31st four night stay. It’s the right thing to do, and the way we were taught by our parents. There is additional information …. Apparently someone stayed in our home on July 29, 2015 for one or two days without our knowledge or permission. Very upsetting. The persons who entered our home left the door and/or windows open and unattended, resulting in pests entering overnight. Please, realize this location not Disneyland nor the Hylton. This is a cabin in a small mining town surrounded by national forests. No internet. No cell phone service. If you leave a door or unscreened window open, you are inviting any number of pests into our home due to the smell of food. In the area there are squirrels, raccoons, mice and, yes, bats at night. Also, notice the bear claw marks on the door from about 25 years ago. Folks, this is a wilderness setting. Our home is cozy and comfortable and secure, but use common sense … please. In the summer, leaving the porch lights on overnight (they are not really needed) will result in insects being drawn close to the entry doors. Again, use your common sense as appropriate for this home’s surroundings. We both thank you for your courtesy. Please take care of our home.

Wonderful getaway

  • 5 of 5

Impromptu trip to area to visit family friend in Salida and found the Amen River House on short notice. Absolutely delighted with the charm of the cabin. The water was high during our stay and the sound from the rushing stream behind the cabin was wonderfully relaxing. We intend to return.

Nice Getaway!

  • 4 of 5

Really enjoyed our stay at the Amen River House. We had eight people and all were comfortable in this nice home. Plenty of towels, blankets and sheets as well as a kitchen well stocked with cooking gear. Beautiful outside deck overlooking the rushing stream below.
