About Claire

We live in Portland and have always vacationed along the Oregon Coast. Whether it was in an RV hitting up all the antique stores, or us kids loading up on old books and reading all the way along hwy 101, the beach has very special memories. I (Claire) have been coming to Gearhart for beach get-aways with friends for years. I never knew we would find this neglected vintage home and have the opportunity for my Dad and I to restore it!

Claire purchased this cottage in 2013

Why Claire chose Gearhart

Gearhart has been the destination of choice for years and years. Whether for a week long stay or just a cup of coffee and a quick walk before returning to Portland, this has always been a very special place.

We wanted a place where we could be within two blocks of the cafe and quick access to the beach.

When we saw the beautiful dark wood, exposed beams and all of the charm we knew we were done for. Restoring this wonderful 100 year-old vintage home has been a labor of love and we are thrilled with the beautiful result. Oh how we hope you adore it and return year after year!

Tarry was pretty much abandoned with just a few summer visitors each year. So when we purchased her in 2013--we had our hands full just getting everything up to speed. Gutting the kitchen to the studs, installing insulation & new 2' blinds to go with the brand-new windows throughout were just a few of the big projects. This year, we rest. In 2015 the front porch gets a complete overhaul and then the exterior will get it's new paint job--beautiful coastal gray, white trim and dashing red on a new front door.

What makes this cottage unique

I've always dreamed of a place where family and friends gather, create new memories, rest and get away from the crazy pace of life.

The new windows let the light pour in, the wonderful bedrooms make a bookworm want to read all day, the gleaming original fir floors all reflect it's 100-year old charm.

Enjoy the encased summer porch, the two huge yards, the fire-pit and the perfect proximity to golf courses, McMenamin's pub, the cafe & restaurant. Walk on the beach or further down, drive on the shore. Hunt for whole sand dollars and dream, rest, read, puzzle and connect in this very special home.

Situated on 1/3 of an acre, there is plenty of room for football and the outdoor fire-pit is the piece de resistance after a day at the coast.

Beautiful home and a wonderful location!

  • 5 of 5

This is a beautiful home that has everything you could possible need. Wonderfully decorated and so very comfortable. Fantastic bakery and restaurant just a couple of blocks away. The beach is just a short walk and it's a great place to find sand dollars at low tide. We celebrated my mother's 80th birthday and decided it was the perfect place! Thank you Clair and Mark for sharing this wonderful house!

Beautiful getaway house!

  • 5 of 5

While modern and functional, the charm of this beautifully restored 1914 home is in tact. We loved the nooks, crannies, vintage doors, and creaky floors. It's located in the heart of Gearhart with easy access to the beach, gift shops, restaurants, and a friendly community. Our only suggestion is have a baby gate available for the stairs.

Consider leaving the Cannon Beach and Seaside crowds behind and stay in quaint little Gearhart, at Tarry by the Sea.

Lovely renovated older home in convenient location

  • 5 of 5

Tarry was perfect for our family group. We made good use of the well-organized kitchen as we like to cook and granchildren aren't so happy in restaurants. Everyone enjoyed the 4th of July small-town parade and impromptu fireworks on the beach. Kite flying was awesome, as were walks on the beach at sunset. Loved the large west-facing porch for visiting and reading. Also large yard for frisbee and kickball.

Sweet spot in Gearhart

  • 5 of 5

Spent Memorial day weekend here for a family get together; this place is awesome! Fully renovated and charmingly decorated; the only thing we couldn't find were some roasting sticks which we left a few behind so the next guests can enjoy the fire pit too. The kitchen is fully stocked, (although I wouldn't mind a couple more sharp knives). The beach (and glorious ocean) are within walking distance and there is a delightful coffee house just a block over. Claire is easily accessible both before we arrived and answering a couple of questions during our stay; rules and instructions are clear and quite understandable. So happy to have found this place and hope we can make use of it again. My only complaint is that it takes 8 hours to get here from Idaho! Thank you for making this place available Claire :-)

Gearhart is a sleepy little village reminiscent of New England coastal communities. Astoria is 20 minutes north and filled with antiques, coffee shops & all kind of historical markers. Be sure to catch Fort Stevens and the Peter Iredale shipwreck. There's also a yearly battle reenactment that is fun for the whole family. With Seaside's boardwalk, promenade, aquarium, restaurants & shops just minutes away to the south, there are lots of fun activities for kids and adults alike. Fifteen minutes south of Gearhart is Cannon Beach, filled with art galleries, coffee shops, boutiques and the iconic Haystack Rock. Gearhart's own Pacific Way Cafe & Bakery, the McMenamin's Sand Trap pub (live music on the weekends!) and golf options galore ensure that staying at Tarry by the Sea will be a memorable experience for all our Guests.
