About the property

3 Bedroom / 2 Bathroom Sleeps 8

Located on Clear Lake of the Spider Lake Chain and only 20 minutes from Hayward, Bakkestua (which translates as Bakkes' living place in Norwegian) was built in the 80's by husband and wife Norwegian immigrants. The cabin is now taken care of by the next generation, but all of the Norwegian elements remain. There is a mix of traditional and mid-century modern Scandinavian design throughout the cabin including a corner cabinet and chest with rosemaling painting, 2 Scandinavian wood-burning stoves, a reindeer skin on the wall, an ornately hand-carved wooden mangle (traditionally used for ironing in Norway), traditional Scandinavian 'dynes' (duvets) in 2 of the bedrooms, as well as other decorations and furniture. Stepping into this cabin is a little like taking a mini-trip to Norway.

Bakkestua has spectacular views of the lake from every living space and bedroom. It is spacious and comfortable with 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, living room combined with dining room, family room, 2 wood-burning stoves, laundry room, 1 larger deck and 2 smaller decks.

On the main level, enjoy a cup of coffee with the sunrise on one deck or enjoy a gin and tonic with the sunset on another deck. In between the two decks is a spacious combined dining room and living room with a wood-burning stove, vaulted ceilings, and speakers with MP3/Ipod connection for enjoying your music. The kitchen has all the essentials minus a dishwasher and is just off of the combined room. The master bedroom and bathroom (shower, no tub) have access to one of the decks with a beautiful view of the lake and the sunset.

On the lower level, there is a family room with a wood-burning stove, TV, DVD player, video library, board games, books, 2 couches with pull-out double beds, and a deck overlooking the lake. There are two bedrooms also with views of the lake, a bathroom with tub and shower, laundry room, and storage room. The storage room has life jackets, fishing rods, golf clubs, and paddles for you to use. Right outside the storage room, there is wood for the wood-burning stoves.

Bakkestua sits above the lake overlooking 200 feet of lake shore. The lower level has a walk-out to a curving, gradual path down to the lake with just a few stairs by the dock. Relax in a hammock or at the fire pit by the lake. Take a canoe or paddle board out for an adventure. Bring your own boat along or rent one at Power Sports only 10 minutes away. Clear Lake is connected to the Spider Lake Chain, so you have access to five lakes with good musky, large-mouth bass, and walleye fishing. There is swimming off the dock, but bring water shoes since it is not a sandy beach. Blow-up boats, chairs, and rings work well in this area.

About Ellen Bakke

As Norwegian immigrants, Harald and Synnove Bakke were looking for a place to remind them of their homeland. They decided on what they call 'Bakkestua' on the Spider Lake Chain. Harald, who was a prominent structural engineer in the Twin Cities at Bakke, Kopp, Ballou, and McFarland (BKBM) built the cabin in the early 80's. Harald and Synnove are enjoying their retirement, but have passed the cabin on to their son and his family. All of the traditional and mid-century modern Scandinavian elements remain throughout the cabin, since the younger generation, Paul and Ellen Bakke, enjoy it just as it is, 'A Little Piece of Scandinavia in the North Woods'.

Family time

  • 4 of 5

We (mom, dad, 2 adult children with spouses and 9 yr old) loved our stay at this cabin! The only reason I did not give 5 stars is because there is no internet. We enjoyed the fire pit, fishing, playing in the water, reading books, hanging out on our rented pontoon boat or cabin deck, and falling asleep with the loon lullaby at night. The cabin and kitchen are well furnished with everything you need and the beds are comfortable. There is a lake view from everywhere in the cabin and plenty of comfortable spaces for everyone to have their own place. It was difficult to leave the cabin and the peacefulness we felt during our week.

The Perfect Hayward Area Cabin

  • 5 of 5

Just had a wonderful 5-night stay in this well-kept cabin. We were amazed at how well equipped it was from the kitchen to the linens to the water items (fishing poles, floaties, chairs, etc.) The peaceful setting was awesome and the proximity to the lake was beautiful! We caught enough fish for a fish fry! The owners were friendly and easy to work with. We will certainly book again!

Wonderful! Very cute, and all the little details thought of! So peaceful, no tv, except for a few dvd's, barely cell service. We enjoyed our family instead! The path and dock are nicely kept up, with lights at night. The water was fine for swimming, and the kids caught a lot of little fish.

It sleeps 10 and there were 11 of us, but the kids wanted to sleep on the floor in their sleeping bags anyway.

We enjoyed the peace and beauty around us. Just a wonderful 4 days!

Great place for active adventures or to kick back and relax. Swimming, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, mountain biking, road biking, golfing, shopping, restaurants, ATV trails are just some of the activities available. We are located less than a mile from Spider Lake Country Club if you like to play golf and exactly 2 miles to the Birkebeiner Ski Trail if you like cross-country skiing (also miles of groomed grassy trails through rolling hills in the spring, summer, and fall). Bring your boat or rent one. Boat landing close (by Country Club) and boat rental - less than 10 minutes away on Hwy 77 (Power Sports). It is equally beautiful in the winter with cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and fires in the wood-burning stoves.

Things not to miss in the area:

Dog sledding, Lumberjack Show and Championships, Chequamegon National Forest -- Fat Tire Bike Race and Birkie X-Country Ski Race! Fishing Hall of Fame, Wilderness Walk, Friday Night Fish Fry.
