A Little Piece of Scandinavia In The North Woods, Spider Lake Chain, Hayward, WI

Bedrooms 3
Space 1,400 sq. ft.
Property type cabin
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

3 Bedroom / 2 Bathroom Sleeps 8

Located on Clear Lake of the Spider Lake Chain and only 20 minutes from Hayward, Bakkestua (which translates as Bakkes' living place in Norwegian) was built in the 80's by husband and wife Norwegian immigrants. The cabin is now taken care of by the next generation, but all of the Norwegian elements remain. There is a mix of traditional and mid-century modern Scandinavian design throughout the cabin including a corner cabinet and chest with rosemaling painting, 2 Scandinavian wood-burning stoves, a reindeer skin on the wall, an ornately hand-carved wooden mangle (traditionally used for ironing in Norway), traditional Scandinavian 'dynes' (duvets) in the bedrooms, as well as other Norwegian decorations and furniture. Stepping into this cabin is a little like taking a mini-trip to Norway.

Bakkestua has spectacular views of the lake from every living space and bedroom. It is spacious and comfortable with 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, living room combined with dining room, family room, 2 wood-burning stoves, laundry room with washer and dryer, 1 larger deck and 2 smaller decks, and WIFI (for those who need to stay connected or would like to watch a movie on the flat screen TV with Roku)

On the main level, enjoy a cup of coffee with the sunrise on one deck or enjoy a gin and tonic with the sunset on another deck. In between the two decks is a spacious combined dining room and living room with a wood-burning stove, vaulted ceilings, and speakers with phone connection for enjoying your music. The kitchen has all the essentials minus a dishwasher and is just off of the combined room. The master bedroom and bathroom have access to one of the decks with a beautiful view of the lake and the sunset.

On the lower level, there is a family room with a wood-burning stove, large flat-screen TV, DVD player, video library, board games, books, 2 couches with pull-out double beds, and a deck overlooking the lake. There are two bedrooms also with views of the lake, a bathroom with tub and shower, laundry room, and storage room. The storage room has life jackets, fishing rods, water toys, and paddles for you to use. Right outside the storage room, there is wood for the wood-burning stoves.

Bakkestua overlooks 200 feet of lake shore on a quiet and tranquil lake with privacy from the neighbors, so that you will feel as if you are alone in nature . The lower level has a walk-out to a curving, gradual path down to the lake with just a few stairs by the dock. Relax on the private 32 foot dock or enjoy a camp fire at the fire pit by the lake. Take a canoe or paddle board out for an adventure. Bring your own boat along or rent one at Hayward Power Sports only 10 minutes away. Clear Lake is connected to the Spider Lake Chain, so you have access to five lakes with good musky, large-mouth bass, and walleye fishing. There is swimming off the dock, but bring water shoes since it is not a sandy beach. Flotation devices work well in this area for having fun in the water.

About Ellen Bakke

As Norwegian immigrants, Harald and Synnove Bakke were looking for a place to remind them of their homeland. They decided on what they call 'Bakkestua' on the Spider Lake Chain. Harald, who was a prominent structural engineer in the Twin Cities at Bakke, Kopp, Ballou, and McFarland (BKBM) built the cabin in the early 80's. Synnove has passed away, but Harald is enjoying his retirement. They passed the cabin on to their son and his family. All of the traditional and mid-century modern Scandinavian elements remain throughout the cabin, since the younger generation, Paul and Ellen Bakke, enjoy it just as it is, 'A Little Piece of Scandinavia in the North Woods'.

A Bit of Norway in Wisconsin, In All The Best Possible Ways

  • 4 of 5

We were hesitant to write a glowing review, only because more people will discover this gem. The Bakke's have created a serene lake house retreat that's easy to access and hard to leave. Nestled in a quiet bay on the Spider Lake chain, Bakkestua offers all the Northwoods recreation or relaxation you'd hope for. The ample windows and high ceilings give the place an airy open quality, while the Scandanavian stove/fireplace keep chilly nights cozy. The fishing was fantastic, the sunsets memorable, the days full of active fun. Come and enjoy the lake country as you remember it.

Fantastic, stunning property inside and out!

  • 5 of 5

Extremely well-kept, picturesque, and has all the necessities for a fantastic lakeside getaway! We had 4 nights at Bakkestua and loved every minute. The interior is beyond charming and very clean and well appointed. Many items for fun at the lake are provided. We rented a pontoon boat from nearby Hayward Power Sports (they will deliver/pick up to a nearby boat landing). The nature, night sky and overall surroundings are truly special and Bakkestua is a perfect place to enjoy it all.

Best stay ever with our group!

  • 5 of 5

Bakkestua is a beautiful home on a quiet lake with great views from every room. The home is well stocked with everything needed including wifi. We were a group of 9 women and found it comfortable to sleep on the pull out couches on the ground floor. Great rental!

Cute Cabin

  • 4 of 5

The cabin was nice. Perfect for a family of 4. The lake was very peaceful. The kitchen was very well equipped. Loved the fact that there was internet - very helpful with work. The mosquitoes were bad. We brought bug spray and citronella candles. The thing I kept wishing the cabin had was a screened in porch. A place where you could go early in the morning to have coffee and enjoy the quiet without getting eaten alive or dousing yourself with bug spray.

Overall I would say it's a great summer get-away.

Owner's Response: Unfortunately, going to the Northwoods does mean that you encounter quite a few bugs. We have plans to screen in one of the decks as time and money allow. Great suggestion!

another wonderful visit

  • 5 of 5

Visited in the summer for the second year in a row. This is a clean and well-supplied cabin in a quiet, beautiful setting, with a private dock and all you might need for a nice lakeside vacation. Very easy communication with owners. I hope we'll be back again!

Beautiful Clean Cabin on Clear Lake. Simple access to Big and Little Spider Lakes!

  • 5 of 5

I rented the cabin for a long weekend with 3 old college friends for a fishing weekend.

Cabin was very nice and clean and plenty of room for 4 people. Could have easily accommodated 2-3 more.

The cabin is right on Clear Lake. We rented a fishing boat from Hayward Power Sports and were able to keep it on the property's dock all weekend.

Place had a fully stocked kitchen with all necessary appliances, pots, pans, dishes, utensils, etc.

Owners very easy to deal with and more than willing to answer any questions we had.

Great place for active adventures or to kick back and relax. Swimming, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, mountain biking, road biking, golfing, shopping, restaurants, and ATV trails are just some of the activities available. We are located less than a mile from Spider Lake Country Club if you like to play golf and exactly 2 miles to the Birkebeiner Ski Trail if you like cross-country skiing (also miles of groomed grassy trails through rolling hills in the spring, summer, and fall for hiking). Bring your boat or rent one. Boat landing close - less than 5 minutes away (by Spider Lake Country Club) and boat rental - less than 10 minutes away on Hwy 77 (Hayward Power Sports). It is equally beautiful in the winter with cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and fires in the wood-burning stoves.

Things not to miss in the area:

Dog sledding, Lumberjack Show and Championships, Chequamegon National Forest -- Fat Tire Bike Race and Birkie X-Country Ski Race! Fishing Hall of Fame, Wilderness Walk, Friday Night Fish Fry.
