What makes this House unique
No better view, and great central location.
Spectacular Setting, even during a Hurricane
An absolute Gem of a location. Unfortunately the home itself has suffered from neglect (framing around outdoor shower has rot, also chipped and peeling paint, gas grill beaten up and inoperable, hammock webbing looking worn and dirty enough that nobody wanted to try it, not even my 10 year old grandson). This was offset by a well stocked kitchen (toaster needs replacing) and servicable bedrooms, living & dining, etc. Outdoor shower itself was wonderful, even in a light rain.
Speaking of rain, we got all of Hurricane Lane for 4 of our 6 days there, totalling between 3 and 4 FEET of rain. House handled it well, never lost power and only leak was slight on the skylight in the kitchen. Caretakers Noah and Brittany were great, bringing us a charcoal grill and propane cooking appliance in case we lost power. They also checked on us frequently to be sure we were OK.
Could be a 5 Star property if brought up to date.
We had just been remodeling the shower and replacing wood so what was thought to be rotten wood was actually new Redwood boards place down and they just had not been painted. There was some wood that had previous white paint on it and the redwood was not yet painted and was probably quite wet. There are 2 barbecue grills and one is gas and the one that we opened up for them was brand new and was just charcoal. Gas grills and stainless steel doesn't hold up well next to the ocean. Unfortunately, sometimes there are hurricanes, and this was one of the worse in recent times. Our part of the Island weathered the storm well.
Beautiful retreat off the beaten path!
We had a wonderful time at the Waipi'o House! It fit our family of eight comfortably.
The owners were very responsive to my emails when I had questions; they always answered within 24 hours and were very accommodating.
Views were spectacular and we enjoyed the privacy . . . the road down to the house looked daunting when I first drove down it, past the friendly courtesy guards (say hi!) and away from the swaths of tourists at the Waipi'o Lookout. But once we turned left up the private drive it wasn't scary at all and we definitely did not need 4WD to get to the house. Down into the valley is another matter ... some of our group managed to hike down the road to the beach (took about 30-45 minutes each way) but it was too much for the little kids and a few members of our group with mobility issues. Those of us who did make the trek on foot gave it two thumbs up (and two sore calves)! This is definitely not a beach for kids though; we drove towards Hilo or Waikoloa for swimming.
The kitchen is well stocked, with cooking utensils and spices, plus there was rain and beach gear and (much-appreciated) bug spray in the closets. We all loved sitting out on the lanai to enjoy the view, especially during the early morning when the sun was lighting up the valley. The outdoor shower is well-loved (with good reason; it was a beautiful experience). The kids enjoyed the adorable gold dust geckos that were outside on the lanai, and the sound of the coqui frogs at night. We also loved exploring the garden and all the tropical flowers blooming along the roadside up to the house.
There was a minor repair issue while we were at the house - the owners were more than gracious enough to offer a discount to reimburse us for the inconvenience. The window-mounted air conditioner unit and dehumidifiers were welcome during those times when the breeze was not enough to keep the house cool. The master suite was warmer than the rest of the house, but the ceiling fan helped there as well.
Overall: everything was clean & beautiful & comfortable and I would highly recommend this property to anyone looking to stay somewhere a little off the beaten path in Hawai'i.
amazing location and house
Our adult family of seven (2 generations) had a hard time deciding whether to stay and enjoy the view from the deck or head out to explore. In addition to a SPECTACULAR view, we could hear the surf from the deck. The drive from the lookout was best done with a sturdy vehicle and a driver used to non-paved roads, but did not require 4 wheel drive. Daniel and his staff responded immediately to all questions and concerns. There were plenty of water and beach toys, and coolers to use. All beds were extremely comfortable and we had everything we needed to cook most of our meals. Very private, incrediblely lovely.
Unique place off the beaten path
We loved our stay at Waipio. The house was very comfortable. The views and the outdoor shower were my favorite. It was secluded and felt like an adventure. The place was clean and the beds were comfortable. I highly recommend a 4-wheel drive to explore the area!
Beautiful views, friendly locals
The house was clean, well-stocked and had the most stunning views of the valley. We are glad we got a 4 wheel drive so we were able to do some exploring. Highly recommend this place!
Beautiful home and view; downstairs studio a little run-down but rest of house truly comfortable and thoroughly enjoyed! Room enough for all 10 of us, and owners very helpful to tourism tips and recommendations. Loved this! Hope to be back some day!
You can find some additional info about the area at waipio.net. An intro video shows how easy it is to get to the house.
There are two different horseback groups in the valley and both go through streams and are more relaxed and free with your use of the horses. A favorite of my girls.
There are boogie boards and surfboards if you want to try the waves, an intermediate wave beach, but favorite of locals.
Local guided tours of the valley can be arranged. Multiple trails so be sure and bring your hiking shoes, water shoes.
