What makes this house unique

No better view, and great central location.

Guestbook comments from the manager

From the minute we drove up to the house we were in love. As you pull into the driveway you have a spectacular view of the waipio valley and it only gets better when you get into the house. The house is fantastic, nothing has been overlooked. The lanai is the place to relax, enjoy the view and listen to the surf, although you can do this from inside as well. The furnishings were first class. The master bedroom is huge, the bed was super comfortable, and the sliders to the lanai (with great outdoor shower) was perfect. The master also has a huge walk in closet and bath with jacuzzi tub. The main part of the house was very warm ,with dining, living and kitchen(fully stocked) all in one area - plenty of room. As there were only 2 of us we didn't even go into the other wing, but the rooms were all large and nicely appointed. Everything is new and I can't say enough about how nice this house is and how much we felt at home there. There is also a great in-law suite downstairs. Ron - the property manager, was available for our few questions. Thanks Ron! The town of honokaa has a nice grocery store, gas stations, restaurants, and shops to poke around in, about 10-15min. drive. Lastly, the biggest draw for this home is the valley itself. It is truly a sacred place. I never tired of looking at the view - you can see from all over the house. You can explore by walking down, or driving if you dare. If you have a chance, stay in this house, you'll be happy you did.

Recommended for: Romantic getaway, sightseeing, age 55+, families with teenagers, adventure seekers.

Great house, gorgeous view

  • 5 of 5

This house is clean, comfortable, well stocked (including beach umbrellas!), quiet, and has a view of one of the most beautiful spots on the big island.

Please know it is isolated and a 30 min drive to Waimea. We enjoyed the drive - it was beautiful paaaing the fields and farm animals.

It is also on the wet side. We had fantastic weather but it can rain every day. It is also in a jungle. There are frogs that sing every night which we loved but certainly made a background noise. There are also centipedes and mosquitos- both managed fairly easily.

I really enjoyed our stay here and would recommend it to anyone. The owner was great to work with.

The outdoor shower is divine!

Unique Beauty!

  • 5 of 5

After I got married here a year and a half ago, I find myself searching for reasons to return. This time I shared the beauty of the home and spectacular view of Waipio with my associates for our Annual Christmas appreciation event, I hope to continue returning.

Mahalo!!!

All that

  • 5 of 5

What a great house. The first thing you see is a fabulous view. Then as you explore the house it is amazing. It has a lot of space. We had plenty of room for our group. I especially loved the outdoor shower. How cool - taking a shower enjoying the sound of the waves and the open air view of the ocean. The porch is perfect - lots of seating and a hammock. The plants around the house are very lush - we picked some avocados, limes and passion fruit. Highly recommend. I really enjoyed the bag of pancake mix and syrup. It was raining one day and we decided to stay in and the pancakes made it possible - nice touch.

Nice place with a beautiful view

  • 4 of 5

Overall, we were pleased with our experience. With this rental, you are primarily paying for an awesome view. The house itself was pretty musty and damp when we arrived (it's in a rainforest, afterall!) and the water pressure was very low. The indoor shower faucet needs a good dip in CLR or needs to be replaced. Currently, it leaks terribly when you pull the pin to switch to shower and the result is a pitiful trickle of water. Also, the water filters and UV light had not been changed in several years - the water from the tap was a slightly yellow color with a funny smell. We decided not to risk drinking it - no big deal but it would have been nice if there was a note or something from the property manager. Alternatively, a small undersink RO system and UV light might have been nice.

We didn't have any real complaints, we just didn't like this particular house as well as some of the others we stayed in, all in roughly the same price range. I think a little extra effort on the part of the local property manager (e.g. getting the A/C or dehumidifiers turned on before guest arrival, maybe a little welcome basket, etc.) and some minor plumbing maintenance would go a long way.

P.s. We loved visiting Tex's Drive-In on our way out-and-about in the mornings for fresh malasadas!

Owner's Response: Depending on the weather it can be damp due to leaving the windows and doors open to enjoy the breeze and ocean sounds. We do use the a/c to dry out the place when closed up. I don't know where our guest would get the idea that the filters are not changed, other than some dates on the filter housing when updated. We have regular maintenance, as well as changing the filters every quarter. The UV light is changed every year, but is currently working. The filters were changed early after our guest complaint and there was little sign of dirt. We are in a place where we use water catchment, and thus a pump, so the water pressure is not as high as in most cities. There is no water line out to the Waipio Valley.

The Heart of the Hamakua Coast

  • 5 of 5

A great place. Has it all.

This home is very welcoming and provided an atmosphere of peace due to its privacy, fantastic view of the open ocean and Waipio's valley majestic vertical walls. You can see the ponds, streams and giant trees. At dawn the birds will serenade you.

Its proximity to Hawaii's Premier Historical site cannot be beat!

This home has open air vaulted ceilings, decor balanced, large fully equipped kitchen, and a beautiful 10 seat dining table. The beds are comfortable and bedrooms with views! too. Bathroom amenities left us wanting for nothing. It is well maintained inside and out, with ample parking in the garage and out.

The yard is large and the patio is next to it but elevated. We enjoyed our time on the large lanai located upstairs, with singing, foot and hand massages and 'talking story' as the locals say.

More than once we acknowledged how blessed we were to be here. A group of 10 ppl-meeting again since high school! If the opportunity arises again, we will return.

You can find some additional info about the area at dannat.net/waipio. An intro video shows how easy it is to get to the house.

There are two different horseback groups in the valley and both go through streams and are more relaxed and free with your use of the horses. A favorite of my girls.

There are boggy boards and a surfboard if you want to try the waves, an intermediate wave beach but favorite of locals.

Local guided tours of the valley can be arranged. Multiple trails so be sure and bring your hiking shoes, water shoes.

Notes:
Located on the northern Hamakua Coast, the sacred Waipio Valley was the boyhood home of King Kamehameha I, and an important center for political and religious life in Hawaii. Not only is 'The Valley of the Kings' an important site for Hawaiian history and culture, it's also a place of dramatic tropical beauty. This fertile valley is about one mile across and over five-miles deep, and surrounded by cliffs up to 2000-feet high. Waipio Valley was once the home of thousands of Native Hawaiians. Today, there are less than 100 residents living amongst the waterfalls, taro fields and rivers permeating the valley. Hawaii Island's tallest waterfall, Hiilawe Falls cascades down 1,300 feet in the back of Waipio. You can view the valley from the coastal Waipio Valley Overlook at the end of the Hamakua Heritage Corridor drive, or you can take a guided van tour, hike, or horseback ride to explore the hidden wonders within.
