About JoAnn Oto

Brent & JoAnn Oto, owners of the WaimeaPlantation Home, born and raised in Hawaii.

JoAnn Oto purchased this house in 2014

Why JoAnn Oto chose Kohala Coast

Located about 2,600 feet above sea level, Waimea is cooler than living along the coastline, yet is just a few minutes drive from some of the best beaches on island. It really is the best of both worlds! It is so beautiful with gingers, jasmine and green pastures and cool temperatures all year long. The beautiful lush and mature landscaping is a perfect private setting to sit and enjoy the views. Waimea is located between Hilo and Kona, so both sides of the island are easily accessible. The town is about 5 minutes away from the home.

What makes this house unique

Waimea is the land of rolling green hills, cowboys, and horses. We are blessed with truly beautiful landscape plus incredible views of the Kohala Mountains, Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa, and Hualalai. Sit on the patio deck in the morning and evening and view the occasional cows grazing on a huge pasture behind the house. Very peaceful and quiet neighborhood where neighbors wave hello as they pass by. Lots of fruit trees and flowering plants.

A private home

  • 2 of 5

We were satisfied with the two bedroom home and accommodations. This was one of 12 places we stayed during our three island visit to Hawaii, and the only place that required us to purchase property protection insurance. Upon departure, we were notified there was a claim against an electric kettle that had been damaged. We did not use this appliance during our stay. I notified the owner and insurance carrier of this, but a $30.00 claim was submitted for coverage. This made us wonder why we were required to purchase property protection.

Cozy and clean.

  • 4 of 5

If you want to be in Waimea this was a great little house. The two bedrooms were nice even though it was just the two of us. It gave us some extra space. Having the lanai looking out onto the lush greenery was so pleasant. The little gas fireplace was awesome too. It was cool and stormy and it made it very cozy.

comfortable house in a good location

  • 4 of 5

Good location of a very sparkling clean and comfortable house. Minimum of basic supplies. Probably not the best choice for people with allergies to fragrances.

Very comfortable well appointed house. The price seemed fair for what we got.

  • 4 of 5

The house is very comfortable. It is on a residential street. It looks exactly like the pictures. The property manager was helpful.

2 suggestions, the house needs curtains on the windows. When we stayed there the windows were only covered by sheers. The street is too busy to feel comfortable without proper curtains. Next, lighting the pilot light on the gas heater was challenging. The instructions were overly complicated. The house is too cold at night in the winter months if you can't get the stove lit.

Overall our family of four enjoyed our stay.

Comfortable place to stay

  • 5 of 5

If you want to stay someplace away from the crowds of tourist, we recommend this place. I have been visited the Big Island many times and this was the best place yet. The house is well set up and very comfortable. Hapunna Beach is a short drive. This part of the island has cool evenings and beautiful scenery. We will stay her again when we return to the island. Thanks!
