About the property

2 Bedroom, 2 Bathroom, Sleeps 4

Betty’s is a newly renovated house in the historic Movie Colony East neighborhood, centrally located with easy access to all that the Coachella Valley has to offer. Walking distance to downtown Palm Springs shopping and restaurants, the Casino, and the Convention Center, and an easy five-minute walk to Ruth Hardy Park for tennis, volleyball or basketball. The house is available for rental during the holidays, the Coachella and Stagecoach music festivals, the Palm Springs Film Festival, The Dinah Shore Weekend and the Palm Springs’ Pride Festival in October.

The interior of the house has been completely updated in 2013 and has all the contemporary comforts. The architect-designed state of the art kitchen features stainless steel appliances, stone countertops, a gas cooktop, vaulted ceilings and a layout that flows from the kitchen to the family room area with its 60-inch wall-mounted flat-screen TV. There are two baths and two bedrooms, both with king-size beds. The house includes an expanded cable package, free long distance telephone in North America and WiFi.

The open concept living room and dining room have been beautifully furnished, capturing the Palm Springs mid-century modern feel. The spacious master suite has a king size bed, a 40-inch flat screen TV, French doors that lead directly to the pool, and a large en suite bathroom. The walk-in shower has multiple showerheads to help create a spa experience. The guest bedroom has a large closet, cable TV and sliding glass doors to the patio and pool area with an adjacent, cheerful modern guest bathroom.

The outdoor living space has a comfortably furnished patio, with an outdoor living room, an outdoor dining room and barbecue and chaises by the new pebble tech pool and spa. There are spectacular mountain views (completely free of wires!) from the backyard.

About Peter

Although we live in Canada, we’ve been coming to Palm Springs since the early 1980s. Clearly we love it here, and we love how vibrant the city’s become in the last decade or so. Couple that with everything else the desert has to offer – amazing hikes, Joshua Tree National Park, great restaurants and shopping – and it’s understandable why we’ve made Palm Springs our second home.

Why Peter chose Palm Springs, Central

Why is the house called “Betty’s”? It was originally built in the 1940s by a cocktail waitress – and former bathing-suit model – named Betty who worked at the popular downtown nightclub, Chi Chi’s, frequented by Frank Sinatra and other stars. Neighbors report that Frank loved Betty’s martinis and occasionally stopped by the house to have her whip up a batch. He also asked her to pick him up from time-to-time at the old Palm Springs train station. As only the third owners of the property we wanted to honor the history of the house by calling it after its first owner. On the counter in the kitchen there is a picture of Betty standing outside the house in the late1940s when the place was little more than a cottage and the street was still unpaved! There are also photos of the house prior to the recent renovations.

Guestbook comments from the manager

If you’re looking for a tranquil escape, a place where a big sun comes up every morning, where you can watch the clouds float by beneath a majestic palm, prepare meals (and margaritas) in a gourmet kitchen, sprawl on deliciously comfortable beds, and putter through a spacious and elegant home away from home – then Betty’s is for you. This past August, I spent a memorable two weeks with family in this stylish Palm Springs bungalow. We were all taken with the attention to detail from the moment we pulled up – the sleek design and décor, the poolside view of the mountains, and the large windows that stream a warm desert light into each room. We enjoyed the pool and spa, and many fine evenings in the outdoor living and dining area, marvelling at shooting stars. It was a terrific spot to gather, with something for everyone, quiet nooks to read and nap, large screens for movie nights, and a classic old Hollywood style neighbourhood worth strolling through. Betty’s is perfectly located just a few minutes from nearly anything you may want or need, grocery store, the eclectic shops and restaurants of downtown, the movie theatre, the art museum and on it goes. Joshua Tree National Park is also less than an hour two hours away, and the premium outlets aren’t far either. In all, I highly recommend Betty’s for singles, couples, and families. It’s that enchanting sort of destination that lets you set your own pace.

Wonderful house in great City

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the house for five weeks in the winter of 2017. We couldn't ask for a better location or better equipped lovely home. A brisk 15 minute walk each morning gets you to all the shops, restaurants and coffee places on Palm Canyon. Hiking trails are also a convenient walk or brief drive away. Biking is safe in the city of Palm Springs and rentals aplenty.

But we also loved hanging out around the pool and spa at the house. With two comfortable bedrooms and a stunning master bathroom with walk in shower (the second bathroom with tub is cute!) as well as mid-century modern living room and dinning room and a fantastic kitchen we spent many days and nights just chilling!

We also enjoyed many of the events around Modernism Week in Palm Springs while we were here as well as conducting our own architectural explorations every week in this amazing city.

We couldn't recommend this property more - we hope to be back again next year!

Comfortable and Well Outfitted!

  • 5 of 5

Very clean, close-in and extraordinary well equipped home. Quiet neighborhood and comfortable beds. Responsive manager. Additional utility charge ($250) for heating the jacuzzi and pool was not mentioned on the website.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review. I'm glad you enjoyed your stay. The fee for heating the pool is listed in the rates section of the listing, and I always disclose it upon providing a quote. It is an optional charge, because heating is not always necessary.

Wonderfully private, but some improvements possible

  • 4 of 5

We had a great time at the home in Nov. 2016. It was clean, the pool area was refreshingly private and quiet, and the location is fantastic (if you don't mind walking a mile in the sunshine to restaurants). The large master suite was especially comfortable, with a large-screen TV and comfy mattress.

A few other things could be easily improved. We were told not to adjust the heat in the house, but it was cold in the mornings — better directions would be helpful on how to manage the heating system. Much of the toilet paper was single-ply; a small thing, but when you're paying a lot for a nice home, it should be better. We had some tepid showers, although I think we found a way at the end to get hotter water; again, better directions would help. The TV in the guest room is tiny and doesn't get the same channels as the other TVs; upgrading to a better option would be appreciated (or just don't have a TV in that room). The TV beside the kitchen area is huge but just a few feet away from the couch; it's an odd and uncomfortable setup.

Overall, we enjoyed our stay and would recommend it to others.

Owner's Response: When you have any questions about the house or how something works, I am always available. I live a block away and can always come over if you have a question. I could easily have adjusted the hot water heater had I known you were having tepid water. As far as adjusting the heat, we only request that guests do not lower the air conditioning to unreasonable levels in the summer when it is very hot because it can freeze up and stop working. November through February, evenings and mornings are cool, and you do need the heat. We do not want you to come hear and be uncomfortable. My phone number is in the house binder.

Excellent!

  • 5 of 5

Betty's is a gem. Myself and three other friends stayed there for a girls' weekend. Peter who takes care of the place was very kind and went out of his way to help us. The place is immaculately clean, updated, and nicely set up. All appliances were good quality and worked well (we didn't heat the spa up though since it was hot outside). They keep the pantry and fridge more stocked than any other rental I've ever stayed at - mustard, mayo, olive oil, spices, etc, - this is a really nice touch! The pool isn't large so if you have kids you may want to check other places out. For us ladies it was perfect, and we loved that there were high ficus hedges for privacy while we were in and around the pool. Dining areas inside and outside. Location was great. We'll definitely be back when we're in PS again!
