About the property

Comfortable 6BR, 2 Bath Lakefront Retreat with Panoramic Views, Prime Location

Welcome to the Gale Cottage!

This unique piece of history is available for weekly rentals.

This inviting retreat has everything you need for making memories with your loved ones.

** 2018 additions: Air conditioning in every bedroom - quiet and

energy efficient!

New kitchen appliances!

2 new kayaks!

Shuffleboard!

The Gale Cottage itself offers plenty of areas to relax and play, but it’s also a perfect home-base for the Whitehall/Montague area providing easy access to Lake Michigan and close proximity to all other points of interest, activities, and conveniences.

If you are looking just to chill, look no further than this peaceful place. Read that vacation novel, while enjoying the cool lake breezes in one of our 6 bedrooms. Take a snooze under the beautiful tree canopy in the outdoor hammock, or on the enclosed porch’s rope swing. Or grab one of the provided beach towels and head to the beach to lounge by the water to enjoy the sunshine, the sound of the lapping waves, and maybe some unhurried conversation.

Everyone will love this spot on White Lake for its gorgeous panoramic view of the blue (not actually white!) waters, which are often remarkably un-crowded. The ever-changing view is so pleasing. It is a delight to see the many types of sailboats glide by and watch the White Lake Yacht Club’s larger sailboats race by on the weekends. The sunsets are beautiful every day of the week!

At night, build a bonfire - have s’mores and tell stories. And don’t forget to stargaze!

Since the whole property is situated on a low grade – it’s easy for your whole group to gather and enjoy each other together. The driveway is flat. And it’s only a few steps down to the large deck where there is seating for 12, and only a few steps further down to the yard, beach, and dock.

Please note that children are very welcome at the Gale Cottage and, hopefully, will be quite entertained. At the beach, kids can dig or build castles with our sand toys, swim, float, or use our row boat. The yard has a large swingset and is plenty big for any number of games (badminton and wiffle ball are in the boat house). Inside, there is a small collection of DVDs and in the bunk room, there are toys, books, & games.

The Gale Cottage is easy to get to – a short 10 minute drive from US-31. It is 3 hours away from Chicago and Detroit, and 55 minutes from Grand Rapids.

The home is ideally located to enjoy the best of each lake:

White Lake’s warmer, calmer waters for water sports like skiing, tubing, fishing, and swimming (or you can just lounge in one of our inflatables!)

And

Lake Michigan’s immense waters & wonderful beaches with soft sand and waves –

3 miles away via boat (via channel access with its great view of the White River Light Station & Museum)

and car (convenient parking is available at Duck Lake State Park Beach, where you can enjoy Duck Lake, the warm, shallow waters of the channel – a big hit with the kids- and the “big lake”).

When it’s time to eat, you will find everything you need to prepare meals for 12 and serve meals for 24 (who wants to do dishes every day on vacation?), or to call for takeout or delivery (a phone and menus).

The Gale Cottage will be stocked with some starter supplies such as coffee, filters, sugar, salt, spices, paper goods (towels, tissues, toilet), soap (hand, dish, dishwasher, laundry), garbage bags, propane, roasting sticks, and firewood.

Food, beverages, and extra supplies needed can be purchased nearby. The sister cities of Whitehall and Montague are only 3.5 miles away. Montague Foods has a large selection of high quality groceries, beer, and wine. Check out the World’s Largest Weathervane before going in! Also take advantage of the Farmers Market (and Artisan Market) across the street on Wednesday and Saturday mornings.

If you choose to dine out, there are several great options in the area. One you can’t miss is Montague’s classic Dog ‘n Suds Drive In. Enjoy a real draft root beer and coney dog via car hop service.

For finer dining, try Crosswinds On the Lake or Lake's Edge in Whitehall. Then go to Dairy Treat to satisfy your sweet tooth. Please ask us for additional recommendations. We know where to find the best Michigan Blueberries and Cherries too!

Check out the White Lake Area’s Visitors site at whitelake.org for a wealth of information, including a downloadable Visitor Guide. There are many special events throughout the year, such as the Cruz’In Classic Car Show, the Arts and Crafts Festival, and the Wine and Jazz Festival. But, you can easily spend any day just in the walk-able picturesque towns of Whitehall and Montague with its many unique shops and attractive places to get some tasty food and drinks. If you are into beer, stop by the area’s very own craft brewery – Fetch Brewing – in downtown Whitehall!

Take a look at our “Other Attractions and Activities” section for web addresses to some of the other popular places near the Gale Cottage. There is so much to see and do in the White Lake Area, you will want to stay longer than a week! (Ask us about discounts for longer stays).

The Gale Cottage makes it easy for your vacation to be what you want it to be – a memorable fun-filled escape!

What makes this cottage unique

The Gale Cottage (1897) is believed to be Wright's first residential work in board-and-batten siding.

Its woodsy simplicity foreshadowed other recreation structures Wright designed after the turn of the century.

The Oak Park Vindicator, July 2, 1897, called Mr. Gale's cottage as being built 'in the happiest style'.

One of the 3 nearby rental cottages, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and built for Mrs. Gale, is located next door.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Our family had a lovely week on White Lake at the lovely Gale Cottage. We were pleasantly surprised how well this Frank Lloyd Wright cottage blends its character and history with the quiet and comforts of a new home. The cottage was well equipped with everything we needed, including washer/dryer, dishwasher, etc. The owner was terrific and made everything easy, even with a last-minute rental. In early fall, it felt quiet and secluded even with other houses nearby . . . having year-round neighbors helps gives both the cottage and the whole area a feel of “home” rather than a tourist destination. Our kids were on the lake every day enjoying the canoe and rowboat, and Gale Cottage has the most comfortable hammock around, with a beautiful view of the lake. We drove 15-20 minutes to Lake Michigan beaches most afternoons, and enjoyed sunsets over White Lake, and even experienced a “moonbow” one night as the full moon shone through a light mist falling over the lake!

Owner's Response: Thank you for the high praise! Opening up one's home and sharing it with strangers can be a bit unsettling! But - it's so worth it - time and time again when we hear of the positive experiences had by our lovely guests such as you!

Great House with Wonderful Amenities

  • 4 of 5

My family really enjoyed our stay at the Gale House. The house has many great amenities for families with kids. We really appreciated the room darkening shades during nap time! The extra beach towels, beach and lawn toys, and water crafts were a big hit too!

Our only disappointment was that the lake is not swimmable for anyone under four years old due to the immense amount od seaweed. My toddler son and 2 year old niece still enjoyed playing on the beach and wading in the shallow water, but the older children and adults were a little bummed that swimming wasn't possible to them. This was not stated in the profile for the house, so I think it should be made clear that this is not a swimming lake. It's perfect for fishing lovers!

Overall, a great house which I'd recommend. LuAnn was wonderful to communicate with and went out of her way to make us feel welcome.

Owner's Response: You and your family are welcome back any time Susie!! -the weed level does change quite a bit from week to week. It does become more of a float/swim off the dock situation, rather than walking in straight from the beach sometimes, other times it's fine. This is a subjective issue as well, and great that you bring it up in case someone interested in booking has a low tolerance for lake weeds. Regardless, glad you enjoyed your time and recommend the Gale Cottage overall. :-)

Wonderful setting for a family

  • 5 of 5

Felt like a “someplace-in-time” vacation where we grew up in the 50s and 60s. This Historic Frank Lloyd Wright home is cozy, spacious with a lot of capacity for 10 to maybe 12 adults. And is on beautiful White Lake next to Lake Michigan!

Owner's Response: How wonderful it was to have you back for family fun time - since you used to play here with the Gale children as a boy! <3 The cottage is always open to you!

A perfect family vacation rental with all the comforts of home!

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week at Gale Cottage with our grown kids and four grandkids who ranged in ages from 7years to 9 months old. 10 in total. There was plenty of room for everyone inside and out. The large deck and table accommodated our meals together, as did the well-stocked kitchen. The living area is large and comfy and nicely decorated, as is the enclosed porch. The upstairs bedrooms are sunny and airy. Overall, a beautiful and old-school style cottage.

The outdoors was amazing. The deck overlooked a large yard and the lake. Plenty of chairs to place on the beach, or gather around the fire pit. We used the provided kayaks, and rented a boat for the week that we docked at the private pier. Plenty of sand toys for the kids who spent hours looking for shells and rocks in the shallow water.

We brought beach towels but didn’t need them as plenty were provided. The house was perfectly positioned on the lake.

Our family travels together often and always rents vacation homes when we do. This home stands out as being lovely, spacious and well cared for, but what makes it really special is the generosity of the owner who provides plenty of everything from towels to cookware to toys and games and all of those necessities and accouterments that make this house truly a home away from home.

Lovely house with great amenities, great location

  • 4 of 5

Lovely setting for a family get away. We had 6 adults and a 2 year old with us and the cottage did not feel crowded. Much more than that would have been difficult to prepare and serve meals in the dining room. One of the bedrooms is a pass-thru to another bedroom too so if you are planning on using all 6 bedrooms they should be comfortable with that.

Two in our group were architects so we loved seeing the evolution of the Prairie Style details in this 1897 building verses some of the neighboring Wright cottages built in 1909 .

LuAnn was very responsive and dropped off new water bottle when ours ran out. Great communication! It was nice to have kayaks and toys for the toddler in good condition and TONS of towels!

Most houses in this shore were fairly close together so it is not very private, but all the neighbors we met were friendly.

We had a 20' fishing boat with a two axle trailer which made getting it to the drive a bit difficult. The boat put in just down the road was also not really for larger boats but there is a municipal boat launch on the Montague side which is much larger.

The town was cute and nice to walk around. Dog'n'Suds was a cute blast from the past hot dog and root beer joint. Fine dining was very limited in both Whitehall and Montague. Stick with venturing out for berries, cherries, and ice cream.

Duck lake parking was i think $9 a day for out of state or $31 annual pass. but you can park near the lighthouse and walk to Lake Michigan's sand beach on the Whitehall side of the channel for free.

Would definitely recommend this rental to a friend.

Owner's Response: Thank you for sharing your experience in detail! We loved having you and appreciate the recommendation!! :-) There are 2 large portable tables in the dining room closet. For seating larger groups together - these can be placed in the living room, near the dining room. Or, we often set them up on the enclosed porch. Each of those tables seats 6. I recommend Hearthstone, The Lake House, and Hank's Tavern in Muskegon. There are lots of other great places too though for fine dining. In Whitehall and Montague - Lake's Edge, Buzz's Lakeside Inn, Pekadill's, Taqueria Diaz, Pub One Eleven, and Bone Ends are consistently good though.

Great location

  • 4 of 5

Comfortable older home with lots of bedrooms. Everything provided. Beautiful lake with access to Lake Michigan. Be sure to rent a boat. Fun fishing with the kids. Bathrooms were small but it is a house built By Frank Lloyd Wright in 1897. Walk right into the water after s'mores. Neighbors were nice too.

Frank Lloyd Wright designed the cottage for excellent cross-ventilation. Most people find the cooling air coming off the lakes to be refreshing and stay plenty cool, even on the hottest days in town. The mature trees on the property also provide shade over the home, however, know that the Gale Cottage does not have central air conditioning.
**** But, each bedroom has it's own remote controlled quiet and efficient air conditioner - just in case! ****
