It is a nice quaint little cabin on the lake, with a great beach for younger children. Shallow water for a long ways out into the lake. Definitely not a secluded area but plenty of lawn and a nice sized private beach to relax on. The hosts were very responsive and friendly and I have no doubts that if something were to need attention they would do anything in their power to resolve it.
Stayed a few days in this small but clean cabin. No better view and host is great.

As you can see, Jack is the type of guest who doesn’t look at pictures or read the descriptions of listings before booking a classic Shell Lake cabin. His communication was minimal and only when he wanted something that was already included in the black binder of instructions. Along with firewood and WiFi password, the binder also included instructions regarding not driving on the lawn. Jack went out of his way to drive around the fence and up to the dwelling multiple times at his convenience. My cleaning lady was just telling me that the worse condition the cabin has even been left in was by Jack. This review, almost a year later, is his retaliation for calling out his behaviors and disrespect for our property. I would not rent to him again.
I needed a few days to myself and this was the perfect spot to gather some peace. It had everything I need, was incredibly clean and cozy, and I can’t wait to go back!
Wonderful place to stay. The owner went above and beyond to make our stay comfortable. The cabin is well stocked with all the essentials and very clean. The lake view was amazing! Highly recommend.
The cabin was great! Only disappointment was the low lake level and inability to really fish from the dock. Perhaps allow boat rental for a couple hours?

I’m glad you enjoyed your stay! The lake has dropped quite a bit this summer and we do plan to adjust the dock accordingly next summer. Most docks around the lake didn’t even touch land this summer or they would be in such shallow water that you couldn’t pull a boat up to it. Luckily we do have about 200 feet of dock length which allows people to walk down the dock without getting wet first. Boat rental is allowed, and I wish I would have known as I would have taken the opportunity to connect you with a local company that does rent out boats. They are walking distance from the cabin and easy to get ahold of. Our insurance does not allow us to rent out motorized boats or they will drop us as our previously totaled out boat lift (storm) was a $10,000 claim. That is why we provided paddle boats, kayaks, and an aluminum boat with oars. If you decide to return let me know and I will get you connected with a pontoon rental!
This little spot in Shell Lake is so perfect. The beach is unbelievably clean and Shell Lake water is the clearest water. Mindy’s place is so conveniently placed on the bike trail to jump on the bike trail to head the short walk into town to get ice cream, dinner or play at the park at the public beach (we have two littles). We had dinner in the gazebo every night just because it was cute. The beds were comfy. The kitchen had everything we needed to make dinner at home every night. Overall 5/5 stay. You can’t beat the beach property she has. That was the winning detail.
It was a wonderful week at a Great Lake! Many friends and great memories in Shell Lake and great weather too! It’s always a plus to be in Shell Lake and by the lake!
Peaceful time right on the lake shore. I enjoyed hearing the sounds of the seagulls and waves through the windows.
Short walking distance to the park, a coffee shop, and restaurant.
Great week at this property! It is just as described, with the exception of some grass growth decreasing beach size. Having your own beach is amazing! Our week was quite windy. We enjoyed the businesses and activities in both Shell Lake and Spooner. We will definitely return to this peaceful retreat!! Thank you Mindy

Hi Kelly! We appreciated your feedback and have put in several hours of focus to reclaim the beach-can't wait for you to return and enjoy more open clean sand/beach :)
House and property were good. Very nice beach views and nice beach. Want to note for others that the living room ceiling ceiling fan is low. People who are 6’ 4” or taller might bump their heads on the ceiling fan. Other reviews also noted that the property felt private, but it didn’t really feel super private to us - there are lots of close neighbors and you’ll see neighbors in their yards and hanging out on their beachfront. This was not a problem, just a note if you don’t want to be around others during your vacation. Lastly, the internet modem/router needs to be updated, and it was hard to stream entertainment on our laptop.

Labor Day weekend is the time the small town comes alive with Town and Country Days. Even the class of 1985 came home for class reunion (along with others who grew up there). It’s unfortunate for those wanting a secluded cabin in the woods, even though the walking distance to local activities is well described in our listing. A aerial view of Shell Lake would show how populated this lake is during the warm months.
When guests check in we do ask for them to review our binder and all amenities and to reach out if you have any questions or encounter issues. I am happy to walk through the 4 WiFi points on the property that assure guests can take advantage of our Spectrum business service. The only guest who had issues streaming reached out right away and we were able to talk her through connecting to the strongest signal according to her location (gazebo, cabin, etc). We do log into the modem to check for updates and assure service isn’t an issue. I personally have worked from this location and used this service over the summer.
We aim to have the best experience for our customers in providing more than the amenities advertised. We do our best to respond promptly if guests contact us. We are also in the middle of refreshing the cabin with fresh interior paint, decor, and more over this winter and will update photos when complete.

Great beach; cabin slightly rustic.
I had a good time enjoying the sandy beach and the gazebo. Cabin was kind of musty smelling. Would suggest to owners to invest in better linens/towels for cabin. Shower was very slow to drain. Also I did not appreciate that someone was monitoring my stay and then reporting back to owner who was not on site at the time. I am a single female and it felt alittle creepy.

It is always interesting timing when someone posts a review such as this (after vrbo returns their deposit 2 weeks post stay). Lynn expressed no concerns during her stay other than the shower took a minute to drain (new shower head but small drain pipe). I reached out initially offering an early check in and to let me know when she arrives so that I could go over a few things as often people start on vacation without reviewing the binder. I thought this was a good idea as I was traveling and not always able to respond as quick as desired to questions. She never called or texted that day. She asked about parking the next day, also in the book, so I know she never opened it. She was concerned that the neighbors were taking all of the parking (there is plenty and they keep to their space). She stated in her text that she had company coming to stay with her. I inquired on my end to understand her concern. One thing we ask is that people are not driving vehicles and atvs on the lawn, which we have orange stakes to indicate so, as well as directions in the binder. Turns out she was driving a UTV in and parking in the yard. Again she must not have looked in the binder which contains directions and photos. I texted asking if someone was parking in the yard and she lied responding "no all is fine". A responsible home owner would call and investigate concerns as they arise. I guess it's creepy to have someone who cares about your stay and experience.

They let our entire family come and visit we were on the beautiful sandy beach everyday enjoying our first annual family get together. Celebrating our parents 6th wedding anniversary. And our father getting through his cancer. Thank to this wonderful family they went above and beyond to take care of us all. I hope others go here to enjoy the beauty and hospitality we did. Shell Lake has been our family destination for over 60 years! It has been our dream to one day own a cabin, and be able to share it with others so they can make memories and have a similar experience to what we have had growing up. We previously rented cabins, as well as stayed at the public campground. This property is family owned, with our family staying in the main house for a large part of the summer, and periodically throughout the school year (though it could be made available to others if the space is needed).
Why they chose this property
Sixty years ago my grandfather packed up my grandmother and their 4 children to drive north until they found something they loved. When they pulled into town they found a sign for Sandy Beach Resort. That's when he decided that this would be the place. When Sandy Beach Resort came up for sale, he wasn't sure how he could manage a resort in Wisconsin, and run his farm in Iowa. My dad has still carried his dream of one day owning a place on Shell Lake, and found it to be reality this past July. Now not only do we have a place to call home, but we can also share the additional cabin with other families so that they can enjoy it too! The previous owners had searched northwest Wisconsin for a few years to find the perfect vacation home, and this was it. When they decided to sell they wanted someone here who would love it as much as they have. And we do!
What makes this property unique
We purchased this property fully furnished and the previous owners had quite the eye for detail! The beautiful sand castle picture and sea shell/sand dollars/fishing theme definitely reminds you that you are on vacation. It was decorated simply, yet beautifully! Unique pieces perfectly placed throughout. The 12 foot screened in gazebo is lined with white icicle lights for late night board games while the children sleep. Wireless Internet is available should you choose to tap into it, or use this as a getaway and chance to unplug from the rest of the world. My husband has restored the bench next to the cabin so everyone can relax and enjoy the view. The view from the living room is also the view from the master bedroom, so you can roll over and wake up to the sun rising over the lake. Generally you can see 10-12 feet down into the lake, so if you go fish on a rock pile, you can watch the fish and feel them nibbling on your line! That was one highlight when I was little. Our beach is quite shallow, so you can allow your little ones to play in the water in front of you without fear of them getting too deep. To us, this is the perfect home away from home!
