About Mindy Gadke

Shell Lake has been our family destination for over 60 years! It has been our dream to one day own a cabin, and be able to share it with others so they can make memories and have a similar experience to what we have had growing up. We previously rented cabins, as well as stayed at the public campground. This property is family owned, with our family staying in the main house for a large part of the summer, and periodically throughout the school year (though it could be made available to others if the space is needed).

Mindy Gadke purchased this cabin in 2013

Why Mindy Gadke chose Northwest

Sixty years ago my grandfather packed up my grandmother and their 4 children to drive north until they found something they loved. When they pulled into town they found a sign for Sandy Beach Resort. That's when he decided that this would be the place. When Sandy Beach Resort came up for sale, he wasn't sure how he could manage a resort in Wisconsin, and run his farm in Iowa. My dad has still carried his dream of one day owning a place on Shell Lake, and found it to be reality this past July. Now not only do we have a place to call home, but we can also share the additional cabin with other families so that they can enjoy it too! The previous owners had searched northwest Wisconsin for a few years to find the perfect vacation home, and this was it. When they decided to sell they wanted someone here who would love it as much as they have. And we do!

What makes this cabin unique

We purchased this property fully furnished and the previous owners had quite the eye for detail! The beautiful sand castle picture and sea shell/sand dollars/fishing theme definitely reminds you that you are on vacation. It was decorated simply, yet beautifully! Unique pieces perfectly placed throughout. The 12 foot screened in gazebo is lined with white icicle lights for late night board games while the children sleep. Wireless Internet is available should you choose to tap into it, or use this as a getaway and chance to unplug from the rest of the world. My husband has restored the bench next to the cabin so everyone can relax and enjoy the view. The view from the living room is also the view from the master bedroom, so you can roll over and wake up to the sun rising over the lake. Generally you can see 10-12 feet down into the lake, so if you go fish on a rock pile, you can watch the fish and feel them nibbling on your line! That was one highlight when I was little. Our beach is quite shallow, so you can allow your little ones to play in the water in front of you without fear of them getting too deep. To us, this is the perfect home away from home!

Notes:
Over 200 feet of dock! Water depth at the end is 48 inches. Feel free to bring your own boat with bumpers to tie up to the dock. We do warn everyone to watch the weather for storms, as they approach quickly. If a storm approaches the option is to use earth anchor (provided) to hold boat in the water during a storm (holds our 4,000 lb boat and allows it enough bounce to not take on water from waves), or best option is to trailer it to prevent damage. Storms are so strong as to overturn a boat lift with a boat in it, as well as detach docks which could damage your boat. Those who are not familiar with Shell Lake do not realize the white caps and storm possibilities on a lake so large. If no storms are in the area you can leave your boat tied up to the dock all week. Dock runs entire length from beach to end of dock which is important as some people don't purchase enough dock so you must walk 100 feet in water to get on their dock or are unable to drive boat up to dock (too shallow water)

Beautiful Cabin, Even Better Vacation

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I spent our honeymoon at this lovely cabin in Shell Lake last week. I had a wonderful experience with the owner's daughter -- she was very prompt and courteous. The property itself is situated so nicely on the lake. There was a nice breeze blowing almost every day we were there. We arrived on a breezy evening and heard the waves on the beach all night. I found the cabin to be the perfect size for the two of us. We never felt like we were in each other's hair, but we were never far from each other. The view over the lake from the living room and bedroom was simply beautiful, and the view from the dock is even better. We enjoyed spending time in the gazebo as it is screened-in and bug-free and also provides a wonderful view. The bed was more than comfortable. My husband is pretty large, at 6'3", and he did say he struggled a bit in the shower stall, but that's to be expected in a small cabin such as this so we weren't surprised or bothered by it -- he's used to being too large for small spaces! :-)

We spent a day at Amnicon State Park and Pattison State Park which entailed about 2 hours of driving round trip, but was great fun. We spent an afternoon in Hayward which is only about 40 minutes away. We did some shopping in Spooner which was adequate for us and had almost everything we needed. The location is great, and we ate meals at several nice restaurants including Peggy's Place in Shell Lake, and McKenzie Landing, which is outside of Spooner (pretty much in the boonies).

The owner was nearby for the majority of our time there and he checked on us regularly to make sure we didn't need anything. He was so polite and helpful. He even took me for a ride in his plane, which was unexpected but so much fun.

Despite having houses/condos/cabins around us, we felt very secluded and private and didn't feel awkward spending time outdoors. Shell Lake is beautiful and clear. It was a bit chilly while we were there so we only swam once, but it was enjoyable. The dock with the bench was one of my favorite parts. I spent quite a few hours on it reading and tanning!

All in all, I can't say enough nice things about this rental. We had a wonderful experience and hope we can return again some day soon. Thank you for helping to make our honeymoon so wonderful! I'll tell all our friends about this lovely home away from home.

A good fall getaway

  • 4 of 5

A lovely fall vacation with a fantastic view of the lake. The fire-pit was close to the cabin and very user friendly. The city of Shell Lake offers good restaurants and amenities.

Anniversary Getaway

  • 5 of 5

This was the perfect fit for our one-year anniversary getaway! We loved the huge sandy beach and the clear shallow water! It was very relaxing and private, and we enjoyed swimming, reading on the beach and taking out the row boat. We also went to the nearby Hunt Hill Audubon Sanctuary and took a beautiful and scenic hike there. Being a five minute walk from the town was so convenient, as we could just walk to go to dinner at a nearby restaurant or walk to grab some groceries. The owners are so nice and welcoming and they let us know that they were there if we needed anything. We would definitely go back again!

Terrific rental for families

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a wonderful ten day vacation at this lovely cabin on Shell Lake! Thank you for sharing this retreat with us; it is a perfect place for making summer lake memories with kids. The cabin is very clean, cozy, and comfortable - exactly what a cabin should be. The owners are extremely friendly and easy to work with, going out of their way to make this a great rental with lots of conveniences. This is easily the best lake I have ever seen for young children who want beach play and also shallow water play. The lake is extremely clear with a clean, sandy bottom and is shallow for a long, long way such that the area where young kids can safely play in the water independently (supervised by parents on beach but not necessarily in the water with the kids) is huge. The sandy beach is also very clean and huge - again, perfect for little kids. We used the kitchen extensively and found it to be convenient and well equipped. We enjoyed the paddle and row boats supplied with the rental and also eating meals in the screened gazebo. We found the conveniences of town to be close enough too and were able to walk to the grocery store for example. This is a nice quiet place for nature lovers, and we were delighted by the bald eagles, osprey, loons, and Monarch butterflies that we saw at the cabin. The nearby Hunt Hills Aububon (~12 miles) is an amazing natural area with terrific trails for nature hikes. We also enjoyed visiting nearby Spooner, WI. A particular highlight for us was the native prairie plantings that surround the cabin - the view across the blooming prairie plants and waving grasses to the sandy beach and beautiful lake was just lovely. We would highly recommend this terrific rental on the fabulous Shell Lake - our time there was both fun and peaceful, just what we wish for in a summer vacation.

A great family summer retreat

  • 5 of 5

Ok.....let me start off staying that the owners go way above and beyond to accommodate their guest. I do not know who would complain about the size of the home. I stayed for a week with my wife and 2 children. My youngest is autistic and and she absolutely loves the home. I am a huge bed snob and all the beds were extremely comfortable. Of course the home is not massive but you use the home to eat, sleep and maybe a short break in between afternoon activities. You walk out the door and in less than 30 seconds are at the waters edge. The owners were unbelievably kind. We were treated like family from day one and could not have been happier. I would recommend it to everyone just not for certain weeks in July because I will be coming back every year. The water is great for swimming and fishing and can't wait to return in 2016!!

Beach

  • 2 of 5

Let's start with the beach/lake. Absolutely beautiful. Shape of house was good. Appliances were available. Space not so much. Very small. Shower was extremely small along with the bathroom. The master bedroom has room for the bed. You have to crawl over bed to get to your side. If your looking for your privacy this is not your place, there is a bunch of small house on one side and condos on the other. There is a decent selection of movies to watch. We still went to the library and rented some movies, we had to small kids so we were in early. There is no cable, which did not bother us because we do not have cable at home. You are supposed to park at the top of the road where you can not see your vehicle, boat, ect. I am not a fan of that, when I am in an area I do not know. I am not saying it's a bad area. You are not able to leave your boat in the water at pier at night. There is an earth anchor available. Me personally I do not want to 1. trust the earth anchor, 2. get wet every time I want to take boat out. Spooner is about 7 minutes away, and Hayward is 30 minutes away. I know that contributes to the price, but for the area it is in I believe it is over priced. Everyone around is very nice, cost is just to high for me to rebook. Thanks.

Owner's Response: It is true our property is a former resort and Shell Lake is a large populated lake, just as described online. Most are a long acre, have 100 feet of lake frontage and can see their neighbors, just like our property. We never installed cable and several families have thanked us for their ability to unplug and reconnect without the usual distractions that they have at home. Wifi is present but only if you choose to log in and connect with the world. Jason must not have realized that the road he refers to is our private driveway, next to our house, on our one acre property just as the cabin is. We do ask that people park in our private driveway, as opposed to the lawn next to the cabin or the shared driveway that others use to access their cabins (again former resort). There is no crime in small town Shell Lake and most people actually leave their cars unlocked in their driveways. Jason had inquired about mooring to the dock at the time of booking. We informed him that we have no problem with use of or tying to the dock with bumpers, but that he needs to watch for storms and either trailer his boat or hook up to the earth anchor to protect his boat from damage when there is knowledge of an approaching storm. It is to protect both his boat, and our 220 foot $30,000 dock. We drilled the earth anchor into the lake/earth as we have at the campground and it has held our 4,000 lb boat in every storm. When he checked in the lake was like glass and 24 hrs later there were white caps on the lake and a storm flooded the local campground. In that storm I would trust the earth anchor or trailer it to prevent damage as opposed to leaving it in the elements (logic?). Last summer a storm flipped a boat lift with it's pontoon inside and we also had to replace our $10,000 boat lift from storm damage. Those who aren't familiar with Shell Lake need to know and check the weather. Jason knew that if there was no storm coming he could leave his boat tied up all night, and he booked knowing this. We put a pillow top king bed in our cabin knowing it takes up space b/c couples liked it more than a queen or full size bed. As seen in pics. While most people take advantage of the outdoors Jason decided to use the cabin and gazebo as a playroom for unattended children and we repaired the damage. He said they really enjoyed their stay and want to come back to ice fish this winter. Due to lack of respect for other's property I will not rent to them again.
