Fontana Lake Cabin-Lake view/access w breathtaking views of Smoky Mtn & pvt dock

Bedrooms 3
Space 1,640 sq. ft.
Property type cabin
Minimum Stay 2 - 6 nights

About the property

3 Bedroom, 2 1/2 bath Cabin with view/access to Fontana Lake

Lazy Elk Cabin overlooks Fontana Lake with breathtaking views of the Smoky Mountains and the lake. It is water view/water access but is not waterfront. It is located in a quiet, remote, scenic, and peaceful vacation escape destination in the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina with water/dock access to take advantage of the lake/water activities, and fishing.

The cabin is located at the end of a 2 mile hard packed dirt/gravel one lane road. Although there is very little traffic on this road, guests are encouraged to drive slow and be prepared to safely pull over or back up slightly in the very rare event of a vehicle coming in the opposite direction.

The private dock on Fontana Lake is accessible by an approx. 7-20 minute walking hike (depending on walking speed) or use the side by side ATV 2/3 of the way with a signed ATV rental agreement and ATV security deposit. The road/trail to the dock is rough/uneven/steep in parts with 85 steep steps close to the dock itself and can be challenging for children and persons with mobility limitations.

The dock is typically not floating from mid/end September until mid/end April due to TVA slowly lowering the water level after labor day and raising it again starting in March. During that time, guests can still access the water by stepping off the 60' walkway and walking down the shore bank to the water. Fontana Lake is over 200 feet deep in areas so there is always a lot of water in this 30 mile long lake.

Very close to whitewater rafting at the Nantahala Outdoor Center, world class mountain biking at Tsali recreation center, fishing, hiking/exploring the Great Smoky mountain national park, and touring the scenic roadways like the Tail of the Dragon (hwy 28).

The cabin is 3 bedroom, 2 1/2 bath with stainless steel kitchen appliances, Italian granite countetops, island seating for 4, slate tiled floor, with kitchen appliances including a coffee maker, toaster, crockpot, and blender. The kitchen has cookware and dinnerware for groups up to 10 and is stocked with limited paper products/laundry supplies. The cabin has hi speed Wi-Fi, house phone with local and unlimited long distance in the US, and (4) LCD TV's with Direct TV. The cabin has central heat/air and also has fans in each bedroom and the living room. The living room has couch seating for 6 and has a instant start propane fireplace with rustic mantle. The living room has a 50' LCD TV with Direct TV package, blue ray player/Wii/games/movie library, 8' regulation size pool table with convertible ping pong/air hockey/and dining table, and dart board. The master bedroom on the main level has a king bed, 42' LCD TV with blue ray player, and a private bathroom with slate tiled floor and large 3' x 5' slate tiled shower and granite vanity. The 2nd bedroom upstairs with a small private balcony has a queen bed and a futon and has a 32' LCD with blue ray player. The 3rd bedroom has a double bed and bunk bed with 32' LCD and blue ray player. The upstairs bedrooms share a bathroom with a slate tiled shower. Outside: Large covered patio with propane grill, picnic table, 4 rockers with "Cracker Barrel" inspired checkers table, and 2 fans with lights. There is an open area below the deck overlooking the lake with a hot tub and an area with a fire pit and seating for 10.

There is a 20' 2012 Sun Tracker/60 HP pontoon boat for $800/week or $300/day and 3 person Sea Doo jet ski for $500/week or $250/day. The pontoon boat and jet ski are not available to rent if the dock is not floating.

* Fontana Lake water levels vary throughout the year. The lake is slowly drawn down after labor day and is dropped approx 50 linear feet during the winter months (lake depth over 200 feet in areas) and typically starts rising in March . Guests can still access the water by stepping off the 60' dock walkway and and walking down the shore bank to the water. The shore bank is typically dry (unless rain) with shale/rocks.

Return visit was just as wonderful!

  • 5 of 5

This was our second stay here and it was just as wonderful as the first. The view of the lake is more beautiful than the pictures show. The cabin is wonderfully set up for either rest or entertainment, we were glad to do both. The porch and rocking chairs are a perfect place to sit and unwind. We were lucky enough to be there for the Great American Eclipse, the cabin was in the cone of totality, and it was a perfect spot for viewing, remote enough that there were no distracting lights. We also enjoyed a day on the lake on the pontoon boat, so many coves to explore! We look forward to coming back again soon!

Beautiful cabin and amazing view

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I and our teenage sons and their friends spent a week at the cabin in July, along with our dog. The cabin is beautifully done and there was more than enough room for all of us. The house was very clean and it was nice to have a washer and dryer on site. It was great to have the cabin stocked with plenty of kitchen and bath supplies. We also rented the pontoon boat for the week which was fantastic. The boys really enjoyed that and just hanging out at the lake. The owner, Gaylene, was very helpful and provided us with all the information we needed for our stay. We love the area and being by the lake with a mountain view is the best of both worlds.

Long Weekend Stay in July 21-24, 2017

  • 3 of 5

This is the second time I have stayed at this property with my two friends for a long weekend. Our reason for returning was the location is very secluded, the view is magnificent and the home serves our needs. While we did enjoy our stay there are several opportunities for improvement:

1.) The sheets and especially the pillows are worn out. I took my own pillows and am thankful because there is no way I would lay my head on the pillows provided with the home. I took the comforter off the bed because it looked nasty. The bed mattress, I will say, was comfortable.

2.) The property offered a boat rental for the entire weekend at a reasonable rate. Unfortunately, the boat available to us was not in good working order. After driving the boat for about 1000 yards it was obvious the engine was not functioning properly putting us at risk of breaking down on the lake, so we turned around and cancelled our boat outing. Except for the Five Minute boat ride we took, we did not use the boat at all during the weekend...which was very disappointing since one of the main reasons we rented this property was the availability of the boat. Based on this experience I think we should be Refunded our Boat Rental fee, because we did not get to use the boat! Not to mention all the pictures we were supposed to take to support our usage of the boat...rediculous!

There was also a Jet Ski available that we did not rent. After viewing the jet ski, it has algae growing in the foothold due to standing water. No way would I use that vehicle!

3.) The journey to get to the boat dock is outrageous. I admit the rental agreement does alert the renter to the challenge of this trek, but the road down to the stop-off point using a 4-wheeler, is very steep, with gravel and gulleys in some places. From the Stop-Off point there is a walk down a very steep hill to the water. The steps provided were appreciated, but the walk down or up in the summer heat is exhausting and I'm in pretty good shape. This aspect of the rental would be a main reason I would not rent this property again.

4.) A final suggestion that needs your attention immediately is: you have a serious Wasp problem. I was stung on the arm by a wasp immediately when we arrived. We successfully removed the nest, but noticed carpenter bees and hornets are burrowing all over the railing on your front and back decks as well as the overhang of your roof.

Owner's Response: Future guests: Since these guests have stayed before I am not sure why they would return based on the complaints in their review. The pontoon boat was in good working condition before, during, and after their stay. I was there right after the guests left and found that they had not lowered the prop in the water. They must have lifted the engine initially to check the prop and did not lower it back into the water to run the pontoon boat. In all my written instructions, I mention that the prop has to be totally lowered to run the pontoon boat to avoid burning out the water pump which is just common sense. I used the pontoon boat for 3 days right after their departure with no issues and multiple guest groups have used it since with absolutely no issues. Their signed pontoon boat rental agreement paperwork clearly details the 3 simple photos that are required before and after rental which is the only way that I have to confirm that the pontoon boat is full of gas, that the prop is not dinged, and that it is clean & trash fee for the next guests usage. If guests have issues with my reasonable request for these 3 simple photos I highly recommend renting from a marina and pay marina rates. Regarding the bedding complaint: I was there right after these guests, there were no issues with the bedding, and no other guests have mentioned anything regarding the bedding. Regardless, I purchased & replaced all bedding with new pillows, comforters, sheets, and mattress covers in the 3 bedrooms. Regarding the complaint on the trail to the dock. The website details that the cabin is lake view and lake access, not lakefront. The VRBO website, signed rental agreement, and welcome letter all detail the hard packed, dirt/gravel trail down to the dock so guests that expect a paved, smooth, level driveway down to the dock have ignored all of the above and somehow must not understand that the cabin and the trail to the dock is in the mountains which are not level and smooth. Regarding the wasp complaint. The rental agreement states that since the cabin is in the mountains there will be flying insects. My cleaning person sprays for wasps if seen but unfortunately this nest must have just been built. Future guests: Please read the VRBO cabin description, rental agreement, welcome letter and call me with questions as I do my utmost to describe the property in detail to avoid misconceptions.

Awesome View!

  • 5 of 5

Well, I have good and bad. The good...the gorgeous view! The will never experience such an awesome view unless you go back. Not such a bad thing in my book. The Smoky Mountains are the best there is east of the Mississippi. This is an adventurers paradise. Accommodations were nice. Plenty of room for the six of us. Enjoyed the sunset every evening on the covered porch. Thumbs up!

Beautiful and Relaxing

  • 5 of 5

Set in a remote location, this "cabin" has all of the amenities of home with none of the noise or traffic. A ten minute ride up a gravel mountain road ends at a beautiful two story home with absolutely breathtaking views. There was more than enough room for three adults and two children. The lodge motif was charming, and I was glad I had resisted the urge to pack cookware. The kitchen was fully stocked all the utensils and flatware we needed, plenty of towels, linens and extra pillows. The ride to the dock is exciting and thoroughly enjoyed spending the day on the lake in the boat, on the jet ski, and just relaxing at the dock. We were fortunate to have excellent weather the entire stay and took advantage of it! A truly memorable family vacation, we look forward to coming back.
