Overview

About the property

3 Bedroom, 2 1/2 bath Cabin with view/access to Fontana Lake

Lazy Elk Cabin overlooks Fontana Lake with breathtaking views of the Smoky Mountains and the lake. It is water view/water access but is not waterfront. It is located in a quiet, remote, scenic, and peaceful vacation escape destination in the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina with water/dock access to take advantage of the lake/water activities, and fishing.

The cabin is located at the end of a 2 mile hard packed dirt/gravel one lane road. Although there is very little traffic on this road, guests are encouraged to drive slow and be prepared to safely pull over or back up slightly in the very rare event of a vehicle coming in the opposite direction.

The private dock on Fontana Lake is accessible by an approx. 7-20 minute walking hike (depending on walking speed) or use the side by side ATV 2/3 of the way with a signed ATV rental agreement and ATV security deposit. The road/trail to the dock is rough/uneven/steep in parts with 85 steep steps close to the dock itself and can be challenging for children and persons with mobility limitations.

The dock is typically not floating from mid/end September until mid/end April due to TVA slowly lowering the water level after labor day and raising it again starting in March. During that time, guests can still access the water by stepping off the 60' walkway and walking down the shore bank to the water. Fontana Lake is over 200 feet deep in areas so there is always a lot of water in this 30 mile long lake.

Very close to whitewater rafting at the Nantahala Outdoor Center, world class mountain biking at Tsali recreation center, fishing, hiking/exploring the Great Smoky mountain national park, and touring the scenic roadways like the Tail of the Dragon (hwy 28).

The cabin is 3 bedroom, 2 1/2 bath with stainless steel kitchen appliances, Italian granite countetops, island seating for 4, slate tiled floor, with kitchen appliances including a regular coffee maker, Keurig coffee maker, toaster, crockpot, and blender. The kitchen has cookware and dinnerware for groups up to 10 and is stocked with limited paper products/laundry supplies. The cabin has Wi-Fi, house phone with local and unlimited long distance in the US, and (4) LCD TV's with Direct TV. The cabin has central heat/air and also has fans in each bedroom and the living room. The living room has couch seating for 6 and has a instant start propane fireplace with rustic mantle. The living room has a 50' LCD TV with Direct TV package, blue ray player/Wii/games/movie library, 8' regulation size pool table with convertible ping pong/air hockey which converts to a dining table. The master bedroom on the main level has a king bed, 42' LCD TV with blue ray player, and a private bathroom with slate tiled floor and large 3' x 5' slate tiled shower and granite vanity. The 2nd bedroom upstairs with a small private balcony has a queen bed and a futon and has a 32' LCD with blue ray player. The 3rd bedroom has a double bed and bunk bed with 32' LCD and blue ray player. The upstairs bedrooms share a bathroom with a slate tiled shower. Outside: Large covered patio with charcoal grill, picnic table, 4 rockers with "Cracker Barrel" inspired checkers table, and 2 fans with lights. There is an open area below the deck overlooking the lake with a hot tub and an area with a fire pit and seating for 10.

There is a 20' 2012 Sun Tracker/60 HP pontoon boat for $800/week or $300/day and 3 person Sea Doo jet ski for $500/week or $250/day. The pontoon boat and jet ski are not available to rent if the dock is not floating.

* Fontana Lake water levels vary throughout the year. The lake is slowly drawn down after labor day and is dropped approx 50 linear feet during the winter months (lake depth over 200 feet in areas) and typically starts rising in March . Guests can still access the water by stepping off the 60' dock walkway and and walking down the shore bank to the water. The shore bank is typically dry (unless rain) with shale/rocks.

Great Stay!

  • 5 of 5

We had a friends weekend at the cabin with three couples. The cabin was very clean and the kitchen was well stocked for cooking (we cooked all of our meals). The hot tub was perfect, clean and hot upon arrival. We came in the off season, so the lake was low, but we still had a nice time hanging out down by it. We also enjoyed all of the games provided. The host left us some local honey and croissants, which was a very nice touch. Hope to return! Thanks!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review which reflects that the new local property management team focus on total satisfaction with cabin cleanliness inside and out is very visible and appreciated. As mentioned in an earlier response, all cookware is brand new stainless steel and this guest group, who cooked all their meals at the cabin, had no requests for any additional cookware/dinnerware/cutlery/kitchen items/ect that was not already supplied.

Absolutely stunning views!! Clean, nice bedrooms!!

  • 5 of 5

My family of 6 adults stayed October 25-29, 2017. We enjoyed every moment spent at the cabin!! It definitely has the cozy mountain feel we were looking for!!! The view of the lake in the mornings was just breathtaking!!!!! Everything inside was clean and nicely stocked. The only thing we found that we needed was a couple more pots/pans and the owner Gaylene had her management team bring us new cookware within an hour or two!!! Very nice and accommodating!

Thank you again for a wonderful stay!!!!! We would love to go back to Lazy Elk Cabin one day!

Owner's Response: The cabin has just been supplied with an entire new set of stainless steel cookware along with new bakeware, new Keurig coffee maker, and new wine glasses. The kitchen has a blender, regular coffee maker, and crockpot, along with dinnerware, cutlery, and glasses for groups of 10 people. All bed comforters are washed for each guest group along with all linens. The pillows, sheets, and comforters are all new and the property management team will replace any bedding/linen/pillow that is in any way stained or blemished . The new local property management team is extremely focused on a super clean cabin inside and out and will address any guests request in a professional, hospitable, and timely manner as these guests have experienced. The cabin, decks, doors, and retaining walls are in the process of being re-stained and painted to create a fresh, inviting, well maintained feel for guests comfort enjoyment. If there are any guests requests for any additional kitchen supplies, they will be gladly provided.

Spectacular views and beautiful house!

  • 5 of 5

Great times at the lazy elk! Peaceful and quiet with unbelievable views. One thing I'd recommend is more signage when getting to the cabin. Can be scary at night driving the dirt road with no GPS signal. Overall a fantastic experience and give it two thumbs up! 👍 👍

Owner's Response: Thank you for your stay! Since the 2 mile road coming into the cabin is on National Forest Service property, I am not allowed to post signs. The welcome letter has detailed directions and there are signs at the beginning of the road before National Forest Service property stating Lazy Elk Cabin 2 miles ahead and after going through the gates to turn left, Lazy Elk Cabin 300 yards ahead, and then welcome to Lazy Elk Cabin.

Remote with awesome view!

This house was exactly what we were looking for! So remote with a view to die for! Spent most of time on rear deck looking at those mountains watching the cloud shadows come across, who needs television! Would very much love to come back!

This property has the best views in the area. Absolutely misrepresented in all other respects!

  • 1 of 5

If you like to be in a remote area, this is the place to go to, but be prepared with all the supplies a home needs: paper towels, toilet paper, towels, plates, pots and pans for cooking and enough food. It's a very long and narrow road to shopping. Definitely bring house slippers since the floors are very dirty. Towels are thinned out and ripped and pillows are very dirty.

There was mold everywhere on the front porch and back deck. The hanging fans on the back deck had inches of dust and mold deposits on them. The gas grill was absolutely filthy. The hot tub needed draining and water replaced. Not very easy to get in and out of the hot tub. The home looked like it was not cleaned in years. Inside the showers was dirt and tons of hair on the inside edges, missing tile pieces that can cause cuts. NO TOILET PAPER!!!

The kitchen is very small and has no appropriate equipment for cooking. The pots and pans were worn out and rusted inside and out. Wash machine was not functional. We were told upon arrival that a replacement part was due for delivery and installation the day we were departing. No additional towels were offered and the housekeeper never returned calls. The old pool table was exceedingly dirty and inappropriate for using as a dinner table. Table clothes were provided but looked like they were not washed clean. All equipment for the pool table was broken or almost unuseable. The wood beams inside the home had hanging hair and dust. All the fans had caked dust on them and the windows never cleaned.

At some point someone entered the home without letting us know and added a piece of furniture while we were on the back deck . It totally freaked us out!

The walk to the dock is more like a dangerous descending and climbing adventure. There is no way you can carry anything while you do the trip there and back. Oh, and the rules!!

There are everywere rules posted in the home!

The owner was accessible to me but the housekeeping was totally absent till 15 minutes before the end of the stay. Two men came in early and started walking around, inspecting the property. I'm sure we left it cleaner! We had to load up all the garbage and haul it a few miles away. Very unpleasant!!

Would we go back there again? ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! We gave the place ONE star because there is nothing lower than that! We travel at least 75 days out of the year. This was by far the worst place ever to rent.

Owner's Response: Whatever this guests motivation was on leaving this overblown, exaggerated, and very slanted review 6 weeks after her stay and never mentioning anything about the cabin cleanliness to the cleaning crew while she was at the cabin, will remain a mystery. To address the complaints I have done the following: Hired a very experienced local property management team with a new cleaning crew that is totally focused on hospitality, guest satisfaction, and a spotless cabin inside and out including the decks, grill, and hot tub. The new property management will offer a garbage service for a small fee and will allow for 2 bags of trash at check out without a fee (if trash is left outside it attracts wildlife). Regarding the hot tub, there are steps to get in and out in front of the hot tub which is shown in the cabin photos. The cabin was totally pressure washed the day of her departure and all outside decks and fans are clean along with the grill being cleaned. All towels have been replaced with new towels and all pots and pans replaced with new stainless steel. All bedding and comforters including pillows had just been replaced 45 days before her stay, but going forward, any pillows that are stained will be replaced. There is dinnerware and cutlery for 10 guests and I have never had a request for any cooking item that I have not fulfilled. Regarding the complaint on the kitchen size, the photos show what the kitchen looks like. Regarding the toilet paper the cleaning crew will always have 2-3 rolls in each of the 3 bathrooms and will leave 2 paper towel rolls for each new rental. The washer and dryer are totally functional. The pool table has brand new felt and is in good shape along with all pool table equipment. The VRBO photos show that the pool table can be converted to a dining table so there is no misrepresentation. The table cloths will be cleaned for each new rental. The road coming into the cabin is detailed in length on all the paperwork along with the trail to the dock so there is no misrepresentation. The only paperwork inside the cabin is the check in and check out instructions and any other printed words are helpful instructions so guests know how to operate the TV, propane fireplace, ect. In summary, as the owner, I will replace, supply, address any guest request to the very best of my ability. Both the new property management team and I am totally focused on a spotless cabin and a great guest experience.

Breathtaking views

  • 4 of 5

Myself and a group of friends spent 3 nights at Lazy Elk and had a great time. The hot tub and fire pit definitely being the big highlights for us. It was so great to see so much untouched wilderness and the star gazing is amazing.

While we did have a couple of issues, the homeowner helped us remedy them to our satisfaction.

We would most definitely go again, probably next year!!

Owner's Response: Unfortunately the well water pump malfunctioned. A well specialist was there within an hour to replace the well switch to get water running again. Regardless that the water was running again, I had the entire well pump replaced with the most reliable and expensive stainless steel well pump available on the market from Germany. As a result of the inconvenience, I offered these guests a no charge stay for any available dates in the future,
