Overview

About the property

3 Bedroom, 2 1/2 bath Cabin with view/access to Fontana Lake

Lazy Elk Cabin overlooks Fontana Lake with breathtaking views of the Smoky Mountains and the lake. It is water view/water access and has a private dock. The cabin includes the use of a side by side Polaris ATV to be used 2/3 of the way to the private dock.

It is located in a quiet, remote, scenic, and peaceful vacation escape destination in the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina with water/dock access to take advantage of the lake/water activities, and fishing.

The cabin wifi can be slower than typically anticipated or ocassionally interrupted due to the remote location of the cabin. If you plan on using the cabin as a secondary office and depend on high speed internet access I suggest booking another property.

Very close to whitewater rafting at the Nantahala Outdoor Center, world class mountain biking at Tsali recreation center, fishing, hiking/exploring the Great Smoky mountain national park, and touring the scenic roadways like the Tail of the Dragon (hwy 28).

The cabin is 3 bedroom, 2 1/2 bath with stainless steel kitchen appliances, Italian granite countertops, butcher block island on wheels, slate tiled floor, with kitchen appliances including a regular coffee maker, Keurig coffee maker, toaster, crockpot, and blender. The kitchen has cookware and dinnerware for groups up to 10 and is stocked with limited paper products/laundry supplies. The cabin has Wi-Fi, house phone with local and unlimited long distance in the US, and (4) LCD TV's with Direct TV. The cabin has central heat/air and also has fans in each bedroom and the living room. The living room has couch seating for 6 and has a instant start propane fireplace with rustic mantle. The living room has a 50' LCD TV with Direct TV package, blue ray player/Wii/games/movie library, . The dining table seats up to 10 people. There is a convertible ping pong/air hockey table top that can be put over the dining table. The master bedroom on the main level has a king bed, 42' LCD TV with blue ray player, and a private bathroom with slate tiled floor and large 3' x 5' slate tiled shower and granite vanity. The 2nd bedroom upstairs with a small private balcony has a queen bed and a futon and has a 32' LCD with blue ray player. The 3rd bedroom has a double bed and bunk bed with 32' LCD and blue ray player. The upstairs bedrooms share a bathroom with a slate tiled shower. Outside: Large covered patio There is a 8' regulation size pool table, charcoal grill (charcoal/fluid/matches not provided), table with 6 chairs, 4 rockers with "Cracker Barrel" inspired checkers table, and 2 fans with lights. There is an open area below the deck overlooking the lake with a hot tub and an area with a fire pit and seating for 10.

There is a 20' 2012 Sun Tracker/60 HP pontoon boat for $800/week or $250/day and 3 person Sea Doo jet ski for $500/week or $250/day. The jet ski and pontoon boat are not available to rent from October through mid/late April due to the dock not floating during the late fall/winter months.

* Fontana Lake water levels vary throughout the year. The dock is typically floating from the 3rd week of April until the end of September. From October until late April the dock rests on the shore bank. Guests can still access the water by stepping off the 60' walkway and walking down the shore bank to the water. Fontana Lake is over 200 feet deep in areas so there is always a lot of water in this 30 mile long lake. The lake is slowly drawn down after labor day and is dropped approx 50 linear feet during the winter months (lake depth over 200 feet in areas) and typically starts rising in March

The cabin is located at the end of a 2 mile hard packed dirt/gravel one lane road. Although there is very little traffic on this road, guests are encouraged to drive slow and be prepared to safely pull over or back up slightly in the very rare event of a vehicle coming in the opposite direction.

The private dock on Fontana Lake is most easily accessed by using the ATV 2/3 of the way. After parking the ATV there is a 1 minute walk on a fairly level shaded trail and then 85 steps down to the dock and then back up to the trail. The steps could be challenging for children and persons with mobility limitations. If the ATV is not available due to repairs/ect the walk is approx 8-10 minutes.

Cleaning and pet fee (if pets brought) not included in booking rate

Cleaning fee $150 due at check out

Pet fee $100 due at check out

Relaxing vacation by the lake

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our time at Lazy Elk cabin. Gaylene was responsive throughout the whole booking process, answering any questions and was flexible to our needs. The cabin was clean and ready for our arrival. We rented the pontoon boat which was very enjoyable. The lake is very nice to swim and boat in. The photos and information regarding the cabin are an accurate representation of what to expect. She recently added a slide into the water at the dock which was a fun addition and a great landmark also to find the dock on your return from a fun day on the lake.

Its a great space for a family get-together. Lots of games, videos and things to do, even if it rains - which unfortunately it did during part of our stay. Its a beautiful, secluded spot, perfect for spending great family time together. Thank you for sharing your home with us! We had a great time with our two grown daughters and their husbands.

Picture perfect!

  • 5 of 5

Just returned from the Lazy Elk cabin with a heart full of family memories! The cabin and attention to detail exceeded our expectations. It was clean, cozy, and spacious enough for our family of 10. The young adults enjoyed playing board games inside and out, the hot tub, and pool table in the evenings. You definitely want to bring enough food for your stay, as the cabin is very remote and far from shopping. Otherwise, you'll spend a lot of valuable time in the car.

As described very well, access to the boat is not for the meek (or elderly) but once you are there and back it is so worth the effort. Fontana Lake is certainly a well-kept secret as we saw very few boaters on the lake at one time. This made for a wonderful time swimming, tubing, and fishing. I can't say enough about the cabin and Gaylene who obviously is intent on having her renters have the best experience possible. Thanks much for the wonderful memories.

Amazing views in a secluded, nature lovers paradise!

  • 5 of 5

This location is like no other! When we started on the 2 mile dirt drive to get to the house we had no idea what to expect. Once we reached the house we were impressed. We immediately walked to the back deck and took in the gorgeous, untouched scenary. The house was very clean and had everything we needed. We then took the ATV down the well maintained path to the barricade and walked to the boat ramp. We chose this destination because of all of the outdoor activities. We brought our own boat but used the jet ski too. The WiFi does not work the greatest but it actually made our vacation even better being “unplugged”. Even our kids, 27, 25, and 19 were surprisingly fine with it! We explored Fontana Dam, the Road to Nowhere, Dragons Tale, NOC, and the Junaluska Memorial. Most of our time was spent swimming at the dock. It was amazing to us how little boat traffic is on Fontana Lake especially over the week of the 4Th of July. I think this was one of the best family bonding vacations we ever took!

Paradise in Western North Carolina

  • 5 of 5

This house is amazing! We loved our stay at the Lazy Elk. The pictures don't do it justice. When you walk onto the back porch and see that view for the first time it almost takes your breath away. You see Fontana Lake, which is not heavily traveled and the Great Smoky Mountains for as far as you can see. There are no other homes when you look out the back porch, so on a clear night you have no night pollution and the stars are so beautiful! The house itself had everything we needed. We had planned all of our meals ahead of time and stocked up on groceries in Bryson City (the other closer grocery store is in a dry county, so we drove 10 minutes farther) before checking in. The house is very remote, so we were glad we were prepared. When we walked in we were greeted with a lovely loaf of bread and honey from the local honey suppliers - Wehrloom Honey. It was such a thoughtful touch! The house was absolutely spotless and the kitchen had all of the pots, pans, silverware, glassware, etc. that we needed. All of the fun stuff like the pool table, ping pong table, hot tub and fire pit were well used during our stay. Everyone had something to do at all times. We even watched The Shining one night, which was one of the movies supplied. The ATV was a game changer. We were so glad it was provided. You drive the ATV from the house down to a small barricade and walk a little ways down to the dock. You want to stay in low gear, take your time and make wide turns during that drive down to the barricade. The walk from where you park the ATV to the dock was tough, but this workout each day was another excuse for us to not feel bad about all the wine we were drinking! We opted to rent the pontoon boat for the week. We used it every day and explored Fontana Lake. We tubed, fished, jumped off rock ledges and swung from rope swings. It was awesome! The house was within a 30 minute or less drive to the Tsali mountain bike trails, Nantahala Outdoor Center for whitewater rafting, tubing in Deep Creek and one of our favorite hikes in the GSMNP - Shuckstack Tower near the Fontana Dam. We took advantage of all these activities, but would have been fine just staying in the house and using the pontoon all week. Our communication with the owner and property manager was easy and professional. We can't wait to return to Lazy Elk!

A true hidden gem with breathtaking views, lots of amenities, and a comfy home away from home feel!

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for somewhere that would offer our family some memories that would last us a lifetime....Lazy Elk did NOT disappoint! Everything about this experience met if not exceeded our expectations. The cabin is very homey, clean, and stocked with everything we needed.

The ATV is a must! The trail to the dock was nicely graded and covered in rock as far as you could drive the ATV. The rest of the trail is a nice walk through the woods on a very defined path. As you descend to the lake (the steepest part) there are wooden steps and a handrail. I’ll admit I had to stop a few times on the way up to catch my breath...reminding myself that I was climbing a mountain!

The lake is big and has very little boat traffic. We rented the pontoon boat and the jet ski. Between the two it offered a perfect combination of activities for us to enjoy the lake. The dock was a perfect place to just chill and swim. The water is so unbelievably clear that you can see your feet. It is like being in a giant swimming pool!

Gaylene was quick to respond when we had a question about the boat. She sent a message and also went out of her way to call. She also kept us in the loop when she received word that the power company was going to make some improvements to the line which we very much appreciated. She is very invested in making certain you and your family have a wonderful experience!

Our family will forever be grateful for the memories we shared at Lazy Elk Cabin on Fontana Lake!

Great view

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time at Lazy Elk. The house was perfect. Secluded. No noise pollution or light pollution. The hot tub was amazing. A lovely view to enjoy each day. Kitchen was well stocked. Spacious house even with our dog. Kids loved the versatile game table.

The walk to the dock was so overgrown we couldn’t get there. Only bummer.

Awesome experience. Memorable trip.

Owner's Response: As a result of this guests comments on the trail to the dock I now have regular lawn service weed whack to maintain the trail to prevent overgrowth. I have invested significantly in the trail by doubling the width and had gravel put down on the part of the trail where they said was overgrown, and now include the ATV at no charge for all rentals for the sole purpose of making it faster and easier for guests to get to the dock. If any guests want to see a video of the trail they can go on YouTube and type in LE dock trail with ATV
