Overview

About the property

3 Bedroom, 2 1/2 bath Cabin with view/access to Fontana Lake

Newly remodeled and decorated Lazy Elk Cabin overlooks Fontana Lake with breathtaking views of the Smoky Mountains and the lake. It is located in a quiet, remote, scenic, and peaceful vacation escape destination in the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina with water/dock access to take advantage of the lake/water activities, and fishing.

The cabin is located at the end of a 2 mile hard packed dirt/gravel one lane road. Although there is very little traffic on this road, guests are encouraged to drive slow and be prepared to safely pull over or back up slightly in the very rare event of a vehicle coming in the opposite direction.

The private dock with picnic table/umbrella, (1) double kayak on Fontana Lake is accessible by a 7 minute hike or use the side by side ATV 2/3 of the way.

The dock is typically not floating from October until mid April due to TVA slowly lowering the water level after labor day and raising it again starting in March. During that time, guests can still access the water by stepping off the 60' walkway and walking down the shore bank to the water. Fontana Lake is over 200 feet deep in areas so there is always a lot of water in this 30 mile long lake.

To clarify, the cabin has a lake view and lake access but is not waterfront. Guests with mobility issues that want to access the water and are unable to navigate the trail and the steps/handrail down to the dock can be picked up at Cable Cove which is 3 miles north on Hwy 28.

Very close to whitewater rafting at the Nantahala Outdoor Center, world class mountain biking at Tsali recreation center, fishing, hiking/exploring the Great Smoky mountain national park, and touring the scenic roadways like the Tail of the Dragon (hwy 28).

The luxury cabin is 3 bedroom, 2 1/2 bath with stainless steel kitchen appliances, Italian granite countetops, island seating for 4, slate tiled floor, with many kitchen appliances including a coffee maker, toaster, and blender. The kitchen has cookware and dinnerware for groups up to 10 and is stocked with limited paper products/laundry supplies. The cabin has hi speed Wi-Fi, house phone with local and unlimited long distance in the US, and (4) LCD TV's with Direct TV. The cabin has central heat/air and also has fans in each bedroom and the living room. The living room has couch seating for 6 and has a instant start propane fireplace with rustic mantle. The living room has a 50' LCD TV with Direct TV package, blue ray player/Wii/games/movie library, 8' regulation size pool table with convertible ping pong/air hockey/and dining table, and dart board. The master bedroom on the main level has a king bed, 42' LCD TV with blue ray player, and a private bathroom with slate tiled floor and large 3' x 5' slate tiled shower and granite vanity. The 2nd bedroom upstairs with a small private balcony has a queen bed and a futon and has a 32' LCD with blue ray player. The 3rd bedroom has a double bed and bunk bed with 32' LCD and blue ray player. The upstairs bedrooms share a bathroom with a slate tiled shower. Outside: Large covered patio with propane grill, picnic table, 4 rockers with "Cracker Barrel" inspired checkers table, and 2 fans with lights. There is an open area below the deck overlooking the lake with a hot tub and an area with a fire pit and seating for 8.

Firewood is for sale on the front porch.

There is a 20' 2012 Sun Tracker/60 HP pontoon boat for $800/week or $300/day and 3 person Sea Doo jet ski for $500/week or $250/day. The pontoon boat and jet ski are not available to rent if the dock is not floating.

* Fontana Lake water levels vary throughout the year. The lake is slowly drawn down after labor day and continues to drop to approx 50 linear feet at lowest level during the winter months (lake depth over 200 feet in areas) and typically starts coming back up in March . Guests can still access the water by stepping off the 60' dock walkway and and walking down the shore bank to the water. The shore bank is typically dry (unless rain) with shale/rocks.

Awesome View!

  • 5 of 5

Well, I have good and bad. The good...the gorgeous view! The bad...you will never experience such an awesome view unless you go back. Not such a bad thing in my book. The Smoky Mountains are the best there is east of the Mississippi. This is an adventurers paradise. Accommodations were nice. Plenty of room for the six of us. Enjoyed the sunset every evening on the covered porch. Thumbs up!

Beautiful and Relaxing

  • 5 of 5

Set in a remote location, this "cabin" has all of the amenities of home with none of the noise or traffic. A ten minute ride up a gravel mountain road ends at a beautiful two story home with absolutely breathtaking views. There was more than enough room for three adults and two children. The lodge motif was charming, and I was glad I had resisted the urge to pack cookware. The kitchen was fully stocked all the utensils and flatware we needed, plenty of towels, linens and extra pillows. The ride to the dock is exciting and thoroughly enjoyed spending the day on the lake in the boat, on the jet ski, and just relaxing at the dock. We were fortunate to have excellent weather the entire stay and took advantage of it! A truly memorable family vacation, we look forward to coming back.

Amazing!

  • 5 of 5

The most amazing view, lake, cabin..... My wife and I stayed with 4 teens and had a tremendous vacation. We rented the pontoon and brought our jet ski. The lake was perfect for swimming and all water activities with very few other boaters. We also went white water rafting and horse back riding in the area. We'll be back!

One of the prettiest views of the mountains and lakes I've seen.

Awesome view. Beautiful, well decorated cabin. A nice retreat place because of its secludedness.

Great cabin, terrible owner!

  • 2 of 5

The cabin is great, & the view is AMAZING, but past that there’s nothing positive to say. The “7-minute hike to the lake” is EXTREMELY dangerous! We made it down, but wouldn’t recommend anyone with small children or not in good shape to even attempt it!

The owner was a nightmare! Every time we corresponded with her we got a different story (i.e. different rental agreements, check in times, pet fees, ATV rental, etc.). She even tried to get us to sign a different agreement with later check in time & higher pet fee after we returned the one we received when we booked the cabin, & then told us she would not rent the ATV after she said she would.

Prior to arriving, she called & emailed us numerous times insisting that she must speak with us directly to “set expectations” for our visit. I am not a child, & do not need a lecture about renting your property! We travel frequently, & are nothing but respectful of every place we have ever stayed! The rules are sent with the rental agreement so we know what is “expected”!

After we left, we realized we had left 2 personal items at the cabin. They were expensive & we needed them back ASAP due to safety concerns. We called the cleaning lady, & explained our situation & the urgency, but unfortunately, she had already left the cabin. She told us the items were there, & she would send them to us Monday (this was Fri night). We were extremely relieved, & told her to let us know how much it was to ship them so we could reimburse her. Monday, she decided she wouldn’t return the items unless we agreed to pay her $20 + shipping, then later decided she wouldn’t send them until she received a check in the mail. We were beyond upset, & contacted Gaylene. After waiting another day, her solution was for us to give her our credit card & she would charge the shipping PLUS the $20 her cleaning lady wanted or we could wait several weeks until she was at the cabin & she would ship them. The lack of compassion when they both knew the urgency was truly astonishing! There was no risk of not getting reimbursed since she had our deposit check! FOUR days later they were finally shipped! After 2 months, we inquired about our deposit check since we hadn’t heard anything or received it. She said she supposedly mailed it to the wrong address, & it was returned, so she shredded it without even bothering to contact us!

This owner is completely unprofessional, & although the cabin is nice I am not sure it is worth the hassle of dealing with her.

Beautiful Home

  • 5 of 5

We loved It! We took our grandmother for her 80th birthday and had an awesome time! We didn't plan much and the house had plenty to do. We loved sitting on the porch and enjoying the view. We even got lucky and had snow!!
