About Bill Thom

Book with someone you can trust! I am a Michigan native and fell in love with the charm & natural beauty of 'UpNorth' many years ago. I have lived in Texas since 1984, and spent summers in Charlevoix with my family. Now my four children are grown and spread across the country from Virginia to Washington. It's your turn to experience the wonder of Half House!

Bill Thom purchased this cottage in 2001

Why Bill Thom chose Northwest

I have owned a home in Charlevoix for over twenty years. I purchased Half House in 2001 and quite frankly, I couldn't believe it was for sale! It is perfectly located across from the beach and just two blocks to downtown.

What makes this cottage unique

I love the quirky eccentricity of this fairytale home. It has so much history & character; thoroughly enchanting! I am pleased to now be able to share it with you.

We walked in and re-booked within 2 hours!

Where to begin? Location...you can see Lake Michigan and the lighthouse from the living room and can easily walk to town for all of the cute shops and restaurants. The home was perfect for our family of 4. Our favorite feature was the fireplace. The home was so cozy and it had everything you could possibly need. The owners make the absolute most out the space. It's so creative and warm. We rent a ton of VRBO properties and this is at the very top of our list. We highly recommend renting this property.

Enchanting

  • 5 of 5

This place was everything we hoped it would be and then some. It is a charming little cottage right across the street from big water. It was clean, well taken care of and thoroughly delightful in every way. For the uninitiated however, you might want to look closely at the charges as there are a few up charges that were mildly surprising. We will happily be going back.

Cozy Christmas in Hobbit House

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for a couple days at Christmas this year and enjoyed our stay at the Hobbit House. The location was perfect to walk downtown and the weather was unseasonably warm on December 26th and we were able to walk the beach and look for Agate rocks! We enjoyed a hike to the light house and toured the neighborhood to find the mushroom houses built there. The Hobbit House's history was fascinating we enjoyed dinner at the Weathervane Restaurant to see the fireplace that includes a large rock placed by Mr. Young! It was fun to see all the rocks left at the house by previous visitors and yes!.....we left one too!

Dream Come True

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I have always wanted to stay in one of the homes that Earl Young had designed. This was extra special that we were able to stay in the one that he designed and built for his daughter. Hopefully when we do this again the weather will be more accommodating! The home was very warm and inviting there was nothing we needed to supply other than ourselves and any personal provisions. My wife fell in love with the design and layout of the interior. Watching the storm from the front room with a fire in the truly unique fireplace was a real plus for our get away weekend!

Cute and comfortable...location great

  • 5 of 5

We just finished our week at Half House and had a great time sharing this little home away from home. The location was great for access to town and the beach...and sunsets over the lake were viewable from our front window or via a short walk down the hill to the water. All the instructions about the house were great and the property was clean and well equipped. Be prepared for the number of people and cars that walk or drive by to take pictures! We had quite a show thru the front window :). Fun and relaxing experience.

It was so fun

We had a great time staying in a mushroom house. Our two golden retrievers were with us and they loved the nearby beach.

Notes:
The house will accommodate six in beds, however I do not recommend more than four adults. The second bedroom located upstairs is petite with two twin beds, and better suited for two children or single adults. There is an additional queen sofabed in the living room, however it IS in the living room! Perfect for stretching out and reading, looking out the picture window at Lake Michigan, or gazing at a blazing fire.
