About Bill Thom

Book with someone you can trust! I am a Michigan native and fell in love with the charm & natural beauty of 'UpNorth' many years ago. I have lived in Texas since 1984, and spent summers in Charlevoix with my family. Now my four children are grown and spread across the country from Virginia to Washington. It's your turn to experience the wonder of Half House!

Bill Thom purchased this cottage in 2001

Why Bill Thom chose Northwest

I have owned a home in Charlevoix for over twenty years. I purchased Half House in 2001 and quite frankly, I couldn't believe it was for sale! It is perfectly located across from the beach and just two blocks to downtown.

What makes this cottage unique

I love the quirky eccentricity of this fairytale home. It has so much history and character; thoroughly enchanting! I am pleased to now be able to share it with you.

Notes:
The house will accommodate five in beds, however I do not recommend more than four adults. The second bedroom located upstairs is small with two twin beds, and better suited for two children or single adults. There is an additional full-size sleeper sofa in the living room, however it IS in the living room! Perfect for stretching out and reading, looking out the picture window at Lake Michigan, or gazing at a blazing fire.

The Hobbit House was perfect for my weekend getaway! The location was perfect, within walking distance to everything Charlevoix has to offer. I loved the amazing view of Lake Michigan, and enjoyed a blazing fire while relaxing in the cozy warmth of this beautiful cottage.

So cozy!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed here this past weekend for our wedding. It was so nice for the guys to get ready in! And even more beautiful to have a fire going the day after the wedding to sit in front of! I'd say the only weird thing is the tours going by all day. You kinda feel like a puppy in a pet store window. But it was actually funny after awhile and I'm sure a few people got some good pics of our pup poking his head up in the window ;) we'd definetly stay here again and loved it!!

Our stay at the hobbit house, Awesome!

  • 5 of 5

Thank you, Bill. Thank you for opening your house up, letting us bring our dog, and letting us experience a bit of history. We so much enjoyed our stay. Everything you need is in the house, makes me think about how I live today. I was able to cook when I wanted, we could walk to town and the beach, explore the lower peninsula. We will be back.

Wonderful 3-week getaway for our family of 4

  • 5 of 5

We had a great 3-week stay at the Half House! Near-perfect accommodations for our family of 4 (adults downstairs, teenagers upstairs) -- clean, well-stocked, and convenient to everything Charlevoix has to offer. Just a short walk to both the beach and downtown.

Amazing sunsets almost every night, and you don't even have to walk to the beach to enjoy them. In fact, one of our favorite activities was just sitting in the adirondack chairs out front, alternating between reading and soaking in the incredible Lake Michigan views.

A couple of mild warnings.

- If you're tall, prepare to duck when walking room to room. I'm 6'2", and it takes only a couple bumps of one's head to learn that a little hunch goes a long way when traversing doorways.

- If you stay around the house more than a couple days, you can't help but memorize the Mushroom House Tour spiel. Plus, among the parade of passing tourists and amateur photographers, some won't register that there are people inside. It's a bit of a fish-bowl experience, but with the right mindset it's also highly amusing.

The owner, Bill, was the ideal remote host. Highly responsive to our questions, always friendly, and he even offered helpful suggestions for fun family activities.

All in all, it was an unforgettable family vacation!
