About Bill Thom

Book with someone you can trust! I was raised in Michigan and fell in love with the charm & natural beauty of 'UpNorth' many years ago. My family spent summers in Charlevoix, but now I live in Texas and my four children are grown and scattered across the country from Virginia to Washington. It's your turn to experience the wonder of Half House!

Bill Thom purchased this cottage in 2001

Why Bill Thom chose Charlevoix

I have been a homeowner in Charlevoix for over twenty five years. I purchased Half House in 2001 and quite frankly, I couldn't believe it was for sale! It is perfectly located directly across from the beach and just two blocks to downtown.

What makes this cottage unique

I love the quirky eccentricity of this fairytale home. It has so much history and character; thoroughly enchanting! I am pleased to now be able to share it with you.

Notes:
The house will accommodate five in beds, however I do not recommend more than four adults. The second bedroom located upstairs is small with two twin beds, and better suited for two children or single adults. There is an additional full-size sleeper sofa in the living room, however it IS in the living room! Perfect for stretching out and reading, looking out the picture window at Lake Michigan, or gazing at a blazing fire.

Just the two of us after 50 years

  • 5 of 5

Our 4 children wanted us to do something BIG for our 50th wedding anniversary. A special trip with our four children and grandchildren to San Antonio. San Antonio holds many memories for us, being on the Riverwalk, Mariachis serenading us at Mi Tierra restaurant. Or a big party in Chicago where we are from and have so many family and friends.

But it hit me, we started out just the two of us. that's what I wanted. something for just the two of us. I remembered seeing the Hobbit House. I thought it looked perfect online.

But it was more than perfect in person. It was magical, like a fairy tale. Every detail made me smile. the small kitchen with its just right pots, pans, which we never used. The furniture in the living room, which we used alot, two comfortable recliners in front of a unique fireplace. The perfect bedroom, with the beautiful wall picture of two birds. Lovebirds. The bed and pillows were not too soft, not too hard, perfect. The color of the blue ceiling and the orange creamsicle walls was like an illustration in a childrens book. We probably spent more time in the house than we did exploring Charlevoix. A fairy tale house. I loved the whole experience. And what a perfect house it was for our 50th wedding anniversary.

Relaxing winter getaway

  • 5 of 5

Loved the half house, ( the ceilings and doorframes were a little low for my 6'4" husband). Beautiful view of the lake, awesome fireplace, walking distance to the beach and downtown. Found lots of petoskey stones - even in January!! Great restaurants and breweries.

Pure Michigan winter!

  • 4 of 5

Property was adorable, cozy and charming although my kids and husband continually hit their heads on the low ceilings and door frame. Being only 5’4 this wasn’t an issue for me, but anyone taller than that should be aware! House was snug and cozy (actually too warm at times- especially with the master bedroom heating vents located right behind the bed) even with sub zero temps and turning the heat down a bit. We loved building fires in the huge fireplace. Wonderful location and easy to walk to all the shops and restaurants in Charlevoix. I wish we had known, however, over half of the downtown shops/cafes close for the winter. All in all, a charming winter get-away for our family!

A cozy and inspiration experience

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I had always wanted to stay at one of these homes having seen them several times over the years. We were delighted with the opportunity to rent such a home and experience this first hand.

We were not let down and the unusual beauty on the exterior was beautifully complemented by the interior. We enjoyed the uniqueness of the front room with the cozy fireplace, the neat utilitarian kitchen and bedrooms. All and all we would like to rent this property again as we had a great time.

Like being in your own fairy tale!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I wanted a couple days on our own before spending time with family for the holidays, and I stumbled across Half House in Charlevoix purely by accident. I'm SO glad I did. We drove up with our little pup from the Detroit area for a couple nights and had the most relaxing time in this cozy house. The house, itself, is adorable. It's the perfect size for two people, with lots of old-fashioned touches (a working rotary-dial phone!) that keep in character of the house while still being updated. The picture window in front has the most beautiful view of Lake Michigan that is even breathtaking in the winter. And the warm, cozy fireplace with a fresh stack of firewood was all that we needed for a couple chilly nights. The home is obviously well-cared for, as well; when it snowed overnight on our final night, the property manager had the walkway shoveled by 6:30 a.m. We also thoroughly enjoyed the huge selection of movie channels on the cable system when we hunkered in for a day.

I'd love to come back in the summer when I'm sure the proximity to the lake is even more glorious. But even staying here in the winter is a real treat. I can't wait to come back again soon!

A Thanksgiving Holiday in a Magical House

  • 5 of 5

We spent the Thanksgiving holiday in Half House. For all the years we have driven by the little house, it was delightful to get to stay in it. It is small but you have everything you need and the quick trip across the street to Lake Michigan was so convenient. It is so easy to walk to restaurants and shopping you don't need your car. We can't wait to go back again.
