Petite, cutest, fully adorned single stand-alone home on Bald Head Island
Why Hugh Powell chose Bald Head Island
Totally unique for this Island. To look at it you would swear you were on Cape Cod or Martha's Vineyard. The home was built and designed by the Boston based, Dan Costa the go-to architect when the Island was first being formed into a thriving community. He also has designed 'The Tijuca Tower' sitting across the Harbor and was the architect for The Shoals Club. We love it for its completeness but its compact nature. It is a complete home and hard to believe it is only 500 square feet. You will swear someone measured wrong when you are inside and see its completeness. The stairs to the sleeping level are very, very unique and those who are challenged to walk are dissuaded from being our guests. They are 'boat house steps' and somewhat difficult to first traverse. After your first try its a piece of cake. Check out the pictures. They are alternating steps.
What makes this Cottage unique
Being in The Harbor was a quest that this little jewel, our 'Diamond', gave us. It is just so cozy and intimate we really feel good to just go and sit on the upper balcony and sip a cool drink. From this vantage we can see where the bald eagles nested this past spriing, watch kayakers, and stand up paddle boards go by on the Bald Head Creek. It is named 'Bald Head Diamond' because when the earliest homeowners came there was, of course, no electricity. Therefore whenever a load of ice made it to the Island it was judged to be 'diamonds' that everyone gathered to use to keep their afternoon cocktails more perfect. Ice was as valuable as diamonds then during the time of the 'Generator Society' that made what little electricity they could from gasoline driven generators. Hence, 'The Generator Society' and their 'diamonds' have become our 'Bald Head Diamond'. Just as unique and precious to us. But we have electricity, wireless internet, Cable TV, and a land telephone line. We're so modern!

We enjoyed staying on Bald Head Island for a long weekend. The property was very quaint. We loved the side porch, which had a beautiful view. It was a great location to the restaurants, shops, and ferry.
Absolutely lovely and charming property on a beautiful island!!
Many thanks and Happy remembrances of the visit and special times. We look forward to hosting our guests again.
An awesome place to stay for some island R & R
Everything was as described in the listing. Having the golf cart & beach chairs available made getting around the island and enjoying the beach very easy!
Great place, everything you need
Right by the Marina and perfect for couples. The place is just as described, very clean and has every amenity that you need from beach chairs to a washer and dryer. The loft bedroom is very relaxing with a sitting balcony off the foot of your bed that gives great views of the marsh and Old Baldy, ceiling fan and a very comfortable bed. If we make it back to BHI we will definitely stay here again.

The Shoals Club is a relaxed, family-focused beach club, built for the enjoyment of Bald Head Island property owners and their guests. Overlooking the legendary Cape Fear Point, the Shoals Club takes its name from the sandy “Frying Pan Shoals” that extend some 20 miles from the cape. From the club’s extraordinary vantage point, members and guests enjoy fine and casual dining, swimming, direct beach access, and a host of activities for children and adults.
Our Island is home to The Bald Head Conservancy. The Barrier Island Study Center (BISC), is the first community-based barrier island research and education facility in the nation. The project was awarded LEED Gold Certification by the US Green Building Council, one of 71 gold projects in the state and one of only six gold certified projects in southeastern North Carolina for new construction. This 5,000 square foot facility will host research specific to Bald Head Island and relevant to all barrier islands and provide scientists, student and researchers with the labs, library and facilities needed to conduct high-level research. The Center will allow the BHI Conservancy to expand educational opportunities to the public and provide the BHI community with the information needed to make lasting decisions regarding sustainable living on BHI.
Efforts to protect the habitats and activities of sea turtles on Bald Head Island go back to 1980. Since its inception in 1983, the Bald Head Island Conservancy has coordinated and sponsored the Sea Turtle Protection Program, in cooperation with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission and the National Marine Fisheries Service. As one of NMFS's 'index beaches', Bald Head Island is nationally recognized for its sea turtle nesting activity, and for the Conservancy's efforts to protect this resource.
Each summer, the Conservancy funds and houses six interns to conduct field work for the Sea Turtle Protection Program, under the direction of our sea turtle biologist. The interns are typically undergraduates majoring in natural interns resource related fields. This internship opportunity is both unique and demanding. The interns not only conduct nightly patrols of the beach, but also experience the full range of job functions associated with running a small nonprofit organization.
Bald Head Lighthouse, known as Old Baldy, is the oldest lighthouse still standing in North Carolina. It is the second of three lighthouses that have been built on Bald Head Island since the 18th century to help guide ships past the dangerous shoals at the mouth of the Cape Fear river. It is open for tours and private walks.
