About the property

Petite, cutest, fully adorned single stand-alone home on Bald Head Island

Please either email or call the property manager before you enter your credit card information so we can provide an accurate quote.

Our home is ready and willing to host couples wanting to getaway and have a fully furnished private cottage on Bald head Island. We have a completely stocked kitchen, 2 full baths, screened porch and living area on the lower level; upstairs balcony off the master with views of the Bald Head Creek. The master bedroom has a new Pottery Barn King size bed for our guests. This Island jewel has been completely renovated in 2013 with Pottery Barn furniture, accessories and linens. We have a new 4 seat golf cart for your transportation needs.

Our home is located in The Harbor Village district of BHI. Many amenities are available by a short walk. The Village is the center of recreational activities, such as stand-up paddle boarding, kayaking, and canoeing. There are several restaurants, Old Baldy our resident lighthouse, The Bald Head Island Chapel, and beach accesses 1,2, and 3. Views of the goings on in The Harbor can be taken on conveniently placed benches located around The Harbor.

A short drive will allow you to visit several fine shops and our fabulous Maritime Market. From that container of 1/2 and 1/2 to fully prepared meals and everything in between, Claude Pope's fine staff will have you convinced that you don't have to bring anything..they have it. They can even get freshly caught selections of seafood if you will give them a morning order and can usually have it on the afternoon ferry for your evening meal.

Why Hugh Powell chose Southern Coast

Totally unique for this Island. To look at it you would swear you were on Cape Cod or Martha's Vineyard. The home was built and designed by the Boston based, Dan Costa the go-to architect when the Island was first being formed into a thriving community. He also has designed 'The Tijuca Tower' sitting across the Harbor and was the architect for The Shoals Club.

We love it for its completeness but its compact nature. It is a complete home and hard to believe it is only 500 square feet. You will swear someone measured wrong when you are inside and see its completeness. The stairs to the sleeping level are very, very unique and those who are challenged to walk are dissuaded from being our guests.

They are 'boat house steps' and somewhat difficult to first traverse. After your first try its a piece of cake. Check out the pictures. They are alternating steps.

What makes this cottage unique

Being in The Harbor was a quest that this little jewel, our 'Diamond', gave us. It is just so cozy and intimate we really feel good to just go and sit on the upper balcony and sip a cool drink. From this vantage we can see where the bald eagles nested this past spriing, watch kayakers, and stand up paddle boards go by on the Bald Head Creek.

It is named 'Bald Head Diamond' because when the earliest homeowners came there was, of course, no electricity. Therefore whenever a load of ice made it to the Island it was judged to be 'diamonds' that everyone gathered to use to keep their afternoon cocktails more perfect. Ice was as valuable as diamonds then during the time of the 'Generator Society' that made what little electricity they could from gasoline driven generators. Hence, 'The Generator Society' and their 'diamonds' have become our 'Bald Head Diamond'. Just as unique and precious to us. But we have electricity, wireless internet, Cable TV, and a land telephone line. We're so modern!

Bald Head Island is a Barrier Island located in the southernmost part of North Carolina. The Island is only accessible by ferry or private boat. There are no autos on The Island and transportation is by foot, bike, golf cart or our wonderful Tram Service. The vegetation is deemed semi-tropical and is the northernmost range naturally of Sabal palmetto. Our beautiful forest of live oak are adorned with Spanish moss and we have 10,000 acres of undeveloped nature preserve and 2000 acres to be developed and used by us humans.

We have 14 miles of beaches facing the east, south and the west beaches are facing the Cape Fear River. All beaches are accessible by all visitors.

There are The Bald Head Club and the Shoals Club. Both Clubs are private and are accessible by guests of properties holding memberships

The Shoals Club is a relaxed, family-focused beach club, built for the enjoyment of Bald Head Island property owners and their guests. Overlooking the legendary Cape Fear Point, the Shoals Club takes its name from the sandy “Frying Pan Shoals” that extend some 20 miles from the cape. From the club’s extraordinary vantage point, members and guests enjoy fine and casual dining, swimming, direct beach access, and a host of activities for children and adults.

Our Island is home to The Bald Head Conservancy. The Barrier Island Study Center (BISC), is the first community-based barrier island research and education facility in the nation. The project was awarded LEED Gold Certification by the US Green Building Council, one of 71 gold projects in the state and one of only six gold certified projects in southeastern North Carolina for new construction. This 5,000 square foot facility will host research specific to Bald Head Island and relevant to all barrier islands and provide scientists, student and researchers with the labs, library and facilities needed to conduct high-level research. The Center will allow the BHI Conservancy to expand educational opportunities to the public and provide the BHI community with the information needed to make lasting decisions regarding sustainable living on BHI.

Efforts to protect the habitats and activities of sea turtles on Bald Head Island go back to 1980. Since its inception in 1983, the Bald Head Island Conservancy has coordinated and sponsored the Sea Turtle Protection Program, in cooperation with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission and the National Marine Fisheries Service. As one of NMFS's 'index beaches', Bald Head Island is nationally recognized for its sea turtle nesting activity, and for the Conservancy's efforts to protect this resource.

Each summer, the Conservancy funds and houses six interns to conduct field work for the Sea Turtle Protection Program, under the direction of our sea turtle biologist. The interns are typically undergraduates majoring in natural interns resource related fields. This internship opportunity is both unique and demanding. The interns not only conduct nightly patrols of the beach, but also experience the full range of job functions associated with running a small nonprofit organization.

Bald Head Lighthouse, known as Old Baldy, is the oldest lighthouse still standing in North Carolina. It is the second of three lighthouses that have been built on Bald Head Island since the 18th century to help guide ships past the dangerous shoals at the mouth of the Cape Fear river. It is open for tours and private walks.

Maritime Market has everything you need to satisfy your hunger, thirst and cravings. Leave your coolers behind, and leave it to the Market - from fresh local NC seafood, USDA Prime Meats and local produce, to an extensive wine collection and seasonal Ice Cream Shop, you'll find just what you're looking for and more.

Savor one of the gourmet creations at the Maritime Market Cafe or grab a delicious breakfast or lunch on the go. With a little advance notice, the Market can customize take-out appetizers or complete meals for the entire family. Make it even easier for yourself by pre-ordering your groceries and meals online and have them delivered to your home just before you arrive.

Truly a beautiful diamond

  • 4 of 5

Wonderful, unique small home for 2 at the marina on Bald Head Island. We had a very pleasant stay and the owner had thought of every thing you might need. The location for a fisherman could not be beat. We hope to stay again.

Wonderful Escape!

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely LOVE your place! My husband and I come to Bald Head a few times a year and are trying to find a place to buy. We joked and said that if you guys ever consider selling please keep us in mind, we would love to buy it as is. 😊 It seriously is the most quaint and lovely little escape. Plus, your wife and I are kindred spirits in the decor department. Pottery barn is my fave! Everything was perfect and we will definitely be renting from you guys again if you will allow. Thanks again!

Beautiful, cozy, clean, like new

  • 5 of 5

We so enjoyed staying in this house for 5 days while celebrating our 20 year anniversary. It is all newly decorated and painted but still has the character and coziness of an older house which I loved. The location was perfect for walking to the nearby restaurants and lighthouse and it was quiet. Everything you needed was there. We enjoyed the screened porch and balcony for our relaxing times at the house. One of our favorites of any vacation house we have stayed in.

Perfect Getaway

  • 5 of 5

If you are looking for a perfect getaway in an extremely comfortable, Pottery Barn / Williams-Sonoma cottage then look no further. We had a wonderful 4 day weekend and the owners leave nothing to chance and no detail left unaddressed. The island is peaceful, quiet, and absolutely everything you need to relax and recharge. The only problem is you'll want to stay when its time to leave.
