About Matt Brown and Joy Falkenburg

Dr. Joy Falkenburg and her husband Matt Brown have lived in the Black Hills since 1999. They purchased the Little Red Inn in 2013 and opened it for use as a vacation home in 2014. They live next to Custer State Park with their family and enjoy the beauty and serenity of the Black Hills and all it has to offer all year long.

Matt Brown and Joy Falkenburg purchased this cottage in 2013

Why Matt Brown and Joy Falkenburg chose Black Hills

We live just down the road from the Little Red Inn. It had been for sale and every time we drove by we thought about buying it and opening it up for vacationers to enjoy when they stayed in the Black Hills. It is in a beautiful location and is close enough to both Custer and Custer State Park to be the perfect spot for people who are visiting the Hills. It also has a fenced in pasture for horses in case travelers are here with their horses to enjoy the Hills. The granite outcroppings east of Custer and Calamity Peak are just across the road from the Little Red Inn. Calamity Peak is one of the most photographed granite peaks in the Hills.

What makes this cottage unique

Our motto is that you can 'hold your horses here'. If you are in the Black Hills to ride, bring your horses with you and leave them in our spacious pasture while you relax at the Little Red Inn. We also have a fire pit so you and the family or friends (or both!) can roast s'mores under the beautiful night sky of Custer.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We came to visit family and stayed with our family and her sister and her family. It worked out wonderful. We were able to have time for the kids to nap and we were able to eat at the house and still close enough to Custer to enjoy it as well. Lots of room inside and outside. The kids could safely play and the temps were perfect. I would come back here with my family again.

Perfection

  • 5 of 5

This house was JUST what we wanted. The owners thought of everything...from bikes to s'mores sticks to all the necessary items one needs to get along in a home for a number of days. This little red cabin is close to pretty much anything you'd want to do. We hiked non-stop, rode horses, did the Chuck Wagon roast, swam in a lake, visited Cascade Falls (Google it, it's simply amazing), hiked some more, did Mt. Rushmore, checked out some of the surrounding towns (including Custer) and we were only there for 5 nights. We had four adults and five kids (aged appx 8, 8, 6, 6, 4). The was plenty of wild life and our kids LOVED the cow chilling in the adjacent property. No complaints. Showers were warm, beds were comfortable, decor was cute, laundry facilities were better than I have at home...we were happy. Thanks for hosting us!

Perfect!

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at the Little Red Inn! The accommodations were perfect for my wife and me with out 5 young children. We had a queen bed to spare. The house was clean and there were more than enough dishes. The TV options were great, but we spent almost all of our time outside, enjoying the view and parade of deer, turkey, and beautiful birds. Our kids' favorite was "Bessie," the young cow by the house. The location is convenient to Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse, and downtown Custer is only minutes away. Matt and Joy were great! We locked ourselves out of the garage (even though locked doors are completely unnecessary), and Matt came and let us in right away. Thanks to the owners, the Inn was a highlight of our trip!

Love the Little Red Cabin

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at the Little Red Cabin! It was very quite and relaxing. My son really enjoyed the cow, (whom he named Buddy), that walked inside a fence along side the property. We would highly recommend The Little Red Cabin.

Even better than we imagined

  • 5 of 5

The Little Red Inn was the absolute perfect place for our visit to South Dakota. The location was just right: we visited Custer State Park almost every day, but also went to Mount Rushmore, Devil's Tower (Wyoming), Badlands National Park, and Wind Cave. It was so nice to have such a comfortable home to come to every night. The house was the perfect size for us, but we could have even had more people stay (we had two adults (sisters) and 3 kids). We utilized the awesome fire pit multiple times, and the kids really enjoyed the large yard to run and play in. There was a super friendly and beautiful cow located in the field next to us, and we were able to feed her and enjoy her company as well! There isn't a single negative thing I can say. Joy and Matt were awesome as well - extremely responsive to any message I sent, and happily provided excellent recommendations for places to eat, shop, and visit. We happened to have our visit take place over the Fourth of July holiday and I can easily say the fireworks show on Pageant Hill in Custer (just a few minutes away from the house) was one of the best we've ever seen! If we ever have another opportunity to visit the area, we will absolutely try and stay at the Little Red Inn again. Great in every way! Thank you Matt and Joy!

Our family enjoyed our stay in Custer. The cabin was very comfortable with a large yard and fire pit. It was in a great central location for all of our planned destinations.

Perfect "BaseCamp" for a Black Hills Vacation

  • 4 of 5

Great place exactly as advertised in Custer! We had 2 families and the layout was perfect and the house had everything we needed for our stay. From the house it is easy to access Mt. Rushmore, Wildlife Loop Road and even close enough to make a DayTrip to the Badlands and Wall Drug. It was perfect as "Base Camp" as we explored the area.

The Falkenburgs were attentive and live in the area. They were great from initial booking thru our stay. Would definitely stay here again!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your review. We were glad that it was so central to your needs and that everything went well . This is a very nice, central area to all the attractions . We were surprised to get four stars instead of five stars. This was our first four out of five star rating rather than a five out of five star rating . We hope your return to the area sometime soon.
