GENERAL AMENITIES: Outdoor space abounds at Haugen’s Haven with a large front porch and two additional decks. The home has a living room, large dining room, full kitchen, five bedrooms (Sleeps 12-13), two full baths and a laundry room. Bed linens, towels, microwave, coffeemaker, dishwasher, garbage disposal, cable TV, wireless internet, gas grill and parking are provided. The kitchen, laundry room and porch were remodeled in 2015. The first floor family suite was remodeled in 2016. We are just completing remodeling the upstairs bathroom for the 2018 season. The house very comfortably sleeps 12 to 13.

The FRONT PORCH is a very large, covered outdoor space with a wicker seating area for over 10 guests. It is a great place to sip your morning coffee or an evening cocktail. Rain or shine the porch is the perfect spot to relax and enjoy your summer vacation. Two decks are available which provide additional space to enjoy the outdoors. Enjoy grilling and your meal on the cafe deck which has the gas grill, dining table and umbrella to cool down from the sun. For a quiet space the retreat deck provides a secluded location to read a book or enjoy a quiet conversation.

The LIVING ROOM has a bank of windows looking onto the front porch with comfortable seating for seven. A newly added electric fireplace with shelves houses the 55” smart TV with cable to catch your favorite shows after a day at the beach, golfing, fishing or enjoying the sights of Northern Michigan.

The DINING ROOM is the heart of the home with a breakfast island that opens to the kitchen. It includes an oak dining table which seats up to 10, a china hutch and a large desk which make this more like a great room than simply a dining area. The sliding glass doors lead to the lovely bistro deck which has a gas grill and a round patio table with umbrella to enjoy an outdoor cookout after a day at the beach. There are two ceiling fans to bring the cool lake breeze into the house.

The KITCHEN was remodeled in 2015 keeping its farmhouse style with dark oak cabinets, butcher block counter tops and a breakfast island. The large porcelain sink and vintage green stove pay tribute to the past while enjoying the modern conveniences of a dishwasher, garbage disposal, microwave, electric stove and refrigerator with ice maker. The wall air conditioner and ceiling fan keep the kitchen cool while cooking. The mobile island provides additional work space and storage for recycling. The kitchen is fully stocked with dishware, glasses, pots, pans and even a crock pot.

The FAMILY BEDROOM is located on the second floor and sleeps 4. This spacious, traditional bedroom has a queen bed and two twin beds. A ceiling fan and window air-conditioner will help you rest comfortably on a hot summer night.

THE BUNK ROOM is located on the second floor and sleeps 3. This cozy, quilted classic room has a bunk bed which has a double bed on the bottom and a twin bed on the top. This room attracts children like a magnet. A window air-conditioner cools the room nicely for a comfortable night of sleep.

The FRENCH DOOR RETREAT is a sun filled room with a double bed located on the first floor. The room includes an antique dresser, ceiling fan, window air conditioner and French doors that lead to the private deck.

The FAMILY SUITE was added in the summer of 2016 and sleeps 4. The two room suite includes a kids sleeping passage with a stairway bunk bed and a sunny private master with a queen memory foam mattress on a antique bed. Ceiling fans and a window air conditioner cool the rooms for a restful night of sleep.

There are two full BATHROOMS located on each floor of the house. The second floor bathroom was remodeled in 2018. The a heated ceramic floor, marble top vanity, new toilet, and reconditioned large claw foot tub with shower. The first floor bathroom has a fiberglass 48' shower with handicap bars, vanity and toilet.

The LAUNDRY ROOM is located off the kitchen and houses a stack able washer and dryer to help you keep up on the week’s laundry.

PARKING is provided in the shared driveway at the rear of the home. There are two parking spaces dedicated for the house. Additional parking is allowed on Forest Avenue all day and night which we often find more convenient for access to the front of the house.

About Denise DeCook

My family has been in Frankfort since the 1870's. My dad was raised in the home, falling in love with the girl across the street. That girl was my Mom, Patricia Raymond who was married to my Dad, Dennis Haugen for 54 years. Today, my husband Ron and I own the home and plan to retire here in the future. We live in East Lansing with our children and also have busy careers which often limit our time in Frankfort. Like my grandparents and parents we enjoy sharing Haugen's Haven with visiting families when we are unable to be in Frankfort.

Denise DeCook purchased this house in 1944

Why Denise DeCook chose Frankfort

The location and features of Haugen's Haven make this the ideal spot for a family vacation with the grandparents, siblings and young children. A two and half block walk to Lake Michigan and a half block walk to downtown is perfectly located to enjoy the beauty of Frankfort in summer. Conveniently located in the heart of Frankfort, once you arrive you can walk everywhere.

What makes this house unique

Hands down the best feature of the House is the expansive front porch. All our guests rave about it as the number one item they miss most when they leave. Running a close second, is the spacious remodeled kitchen, dining room and laundry room. Additionally, the bedrooms located on the first and second floor make it ideal for private family space as well as convenient for grandparents. Our home is full of tradition and comfort which is perfect for families to enjoy.

Rental Summer 2016

  • 5 of 5

Let me first say this, we have been going to Frankfort for 9 years now, this is our 3rd house (first was sold and second was a last minute find and then we found this wonderful home, Haugen's Haven. Everything is as described, the front porch is the GREATEST, large and very comfortable with seating for 12. There was nothing to need in the kitchen, well stocked with quality utensils and dishes, enough pots, baking dishes, appliances etc. The bathrooms were nicely done and everything worked, there were enough electrical outlets throughout the home. (I am mentioning this because someone asked us if the plumbing was working and how many outlets there were in the home). Water pressure was great. Enough seating for TV watching and eating. Very short walk to the beach, not even a block to downtown. Close to Sleeping Bear and floating on the Platte River, Betsie Beach and Elberta Beach. Everything was clean and tasteful. There were 8 adults and 2 children and we had no problem with showers or baths. There were people renting the back, but could not hear them. I recommend this home to everyone, with 3 days of rain our spirit wasn't dampened because of the accommodations of this gorgeous home. I am renting again. Thank You Haugen's Haven for the best vacation!!

Great location, comfortable accommodations

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our time in Frankfort, due in large part to the terrific location of this property. Being within easy walking distance of all of Frankfort's restaurants, the marina, and the beach really allowed us to relax and enjoy ourselves. It's also a very easy drive to the rest of the region's fantastic outdoor activities, including hiking in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, and canoeing the Lower Platte River.

The property was a great fit for our family of four, but certainly could have easily accommodated a few more people. The kitchen is spacious and has plenty of cookware, dishes and flatware. Four of us comfortably showered in the mornings with plenty of hot water. While we benefited from fantastic weather throughout the week (dry, mid-70s during the day and cooler nights), the window AC units in the bedrooms were perfect for cooling off overnight after the two warmer days. And the front porch.... I miss the front porch the most!

Frankfort was quiet the week we visited, so we chose to park on the street, but there was plenty of space behind the house had we chosen to use the private parking area. And while the property owner was on-site in the attached apartment for a couple of nights overlapping our stay, we would not have even known they were in residence had we not bumped into them once during our coming and going from the house while they were doing some yard work.

Nearest Beach
Lake Michigan

Frankfort is a small Lake Michigan harbor town with a spacious sugar sand beach. The two breakwaters with lighthouses to guide sailors make for amazing scenic views, great fishing, long walks on the pier and incredible views of inspiring summer sunsets.

The six block traditional downtown has a variety of restaurants, bars, shops, an amazing bakery, parks and views of the marina.

A short drive will get you to the 'Most Beautiful Place in America' according to ABC's Good Morning America in 2011. A trip to the Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes is a must and should include the dune climb and take the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive.

Adventures in Traverse City or Manistee are 30 to 45 minutes away. Sightseeing, festivals, swimming, boating, world class golf courses and casinos are a few interests that draw vacationers to enjoy the local scenery.
