The Sandbox Vacation Home offers families who are seeking a rental property on Daufuskie Island a unique opportunity for beautiful vacation home with many extra benefits.

This premium-level 3-bedroom beach cottage is perfectly located! This cottage really does have it all! Situated on the 2nd row of the Melrose cottage area, you will have a glimpse of the ocean at the front, and both marsh and golf course direct views from the back. The Sandbox Cottage has a HUGE backyard with its own hammock for snoozing or reading under the Great Oaks draped with Spanish Moss. The cottage's yard adjoins the 8th green of the Melrose golf course

The secluded Melrose beach is approximately a 90-second walk from your front door!

A truly nice feature of this cottage is that it has extended-sized screened porches. You'll be able to start your day sitting in your Adirondack chair sipping coffee while watching the morning sun rise over the ocean, and end your day with cocktails and dinner on the back porch while enjoying the island's plentiful sea shore birds flying over the lovely marsh area.

The interior of the cottage is lovely as well. This is one of the renovated beach cottages, and you will enjoy an open and spacious living/dining/kitchen area that is great for family get-togethers or quality time with a group of friends. It includes, of course, a flat screen TV, DVD player, and Wi-Fi. Your fully-equipped kitchen with Corian counters is perfect for preparing meals that can be enjoyed inside or out on the screened-in porch.

This vacation home also comes with a charcoal grill for your own barbecues, beach chairs, and a beach umbrella.

The Sandbox Vacation Home is beautifully decorated and has many unique touches including colorful Low-Country prints and comfortable appointments throughout. The master bedroom includes a king-sized bed, a bump-out alcove with comfortable chairs for reading or watching TV, and a private bathroom. The remaining two bedrooms each have two full-sized beds and share a full bathroom decorated with artwork featuring Daufuskie scenes. All bedrooms have flatscreen TVs.

Concerned about the logistics of coming to the island, getting groceries, etc etc? No need to worry! You will receiving lots of good information and assistance from the owner who lives on the island and will be available 24/7 for any problems. As with all of DRG's rental guests, we strive to make the Daufuskie experience a stress-free and enjoyable adventure. Once you're here, the owner will be available to introduce you to both the resort and our unique and beautiful island that you will want to explore on the complimentary golf cart provided with this cottage.

So why delay? Daufuskie is waiting...

The owner accepts well-behaved canine members of the family. However, the dog must be over one year old, not aggressive towards people or other pets, be house trained, does not get up on the furniture, and is ok with being left alone when you are away from the cottage (no incessant barking or destructive behavior). We also ask that you will be a responsible pet owner when the dog is outside, that your dog is up-to-date on flea and heart worm treatment, that there will be no signs that your pet was in the property when you depart, and that you will be responsible for any damage and/or extra cleaning caused by your dog.

Normally, the pet fee is $100 for the first dog and $50 for the second dog. All funds collected for this purpose are earmarked for food and vet care for the owner's rescued pet sanctuary.

About Deborah Smith

I am a full-time Daufuskie resident, and am the owner of Daufuskie Rental Group team. I am active in many island volunteer activities, and am chair of the Daufuskie Island Council. I enjoy sharing the Sandbox Cottage with island visitors, and especially introducing guests to our special island.

Deborah Smith purchased this cottage in 2005

Why Deborah Smith chose Melrose on the Beach

When I purchased this property, I chose it because it offered a beautiful and private setting with close proximity to the beach. Although most of the Melrose cottages are two-bedroom configurations, I thought that a three-bedroom design (which was accomplished during the cottage's extensive renovation) offered more opportunities for family and friend visitors to share the island with us.

What makes this cottage unique

This is one of the few three-bedroom Melrose beach cottages. It has both screened-in front and back porches, and the back porch is extra spacious.

The Sandbox Vacation Home is also one of the few Melrose cottages with a functioning gas fireplace, perfect for chilly evenings in the Fall and Winter months!

An Exceptional Island Cottage: It's one of the nicest places we've every stayed

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Deborah's home in mid-May 2017 while attending a wedding at the Sea Oak Manor, across Daufuskie Island from here. Deborah's place is great, with a screened-in porch on the front (looking towards the ocean) and a screened porch on the back (towards the forest). The bedrooms are beautiful and the bathrooms are very large. The living/dining room is very comfortable, with a large dining table and a very comfortable leather couch. I counted 28 places to sit available in the house, if you wanted to have a crowd over for dinner. With only five of us staying here, we were never crowded. The kitchen is very well-equipped and there are two Weber charcoal grills. Speaking of well-equipped, we've never been to a rental with more great things - it's full of books and dvds and games. There's Direct tv on all three televisions. The cottage is only a few minutes walk (or a one minute golf cart ride) from the beach. While we were there, on two occasions, we were literally the only people on the beach for two hours each time. (A couple and their dog walked by once - that's it.) We loved Deborah's home and really loved Daufuskie Island and it's historic places. We appreciated very much that the golf cart was included in the price of the house rental. And our ferry rides and ground transportation on the island were organized for us by Deborah's company, so that took all of the complications out of our local transportation. From the ferry parking lot on the mainland to the front steps of the cabin, our trip over to the island was seamless (special thanks to the ferry crew and Freddie who drove us on the island, and who is a great guy). And speaking of great people, Deborah went far beyond the call of duty for us. We really appreciated that she bought two bathing suits for us on Hilton Head, when we arrived at a beach island with a kid's bathing suit missing from the suitcase. Thank you very much for everything Deborah. It was a great visit. We wish we booked a longer stay. We live about 7000 km away from Daufuskie, so it may be a while before we're back, but if we do, we would definitely stay at the Sandbox Cottage again.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your kind comments, and all of us at DRG are very glad you enjoyed your stay at the Sandbox Cottage. More importantly, we are glad you appreciated the charms of the island itself. Yes, Daufuskie IS a very special place, and visitors particularly enjoy the friendly people, secluded beaches, and extraordinary wildlife. We do hope you make your way down to our neck of the woods once again, and we look forward to seeing you at that time. Deborah Smith, Owner, Daufuskie Rental Group and Owner, Sandbox Cottage

Exactly What We Were Looking For

  • 5 of 5

This was our first trip to Daufuskie Island and we were really looking forward to it. Deborah and Karen were both wonderful to work with during the booking process. There was a mix up on our ferry schedule, and despite it being our fault, they fixed the issue immediately.

The gentleman who met us at the dock to take us to the house was great! He gave us a rundown of where things were on the island and pointed out some of the best places to visit and eat. Deborah was at the house when we arrived and was very understanding that we had driven all night and were exhausted! She gave us basic information about the house and golf carts and then let us get some much needed rest. She came back later in the afternoon to give us more detailed information.

We had some minor issues with the golf carts and Deborah addressed them immediately. She was always just a phone call away and provided some great information about the island. She even took my daughter and her three friends, who are animal lovers, to the cat sanctuary so they could see all of the cats.

Overall it was a wonderful trip. We were looking for somewhere to go to relax and this was the perfect place. We wish we had more time on the island but definitely plan on coming back.

It was sad to see that the Melrose resort was closed and in disrepair. I can only imagine what a perfect and beautiful setting it had been in the past. I really hope they find a new owner and return it to it's former glory!

cozy and beautiful cottage

  • 5 of 5

The owner, Deborah was wonderful and very accomodating; she even came out in a rain storm to bring us some supplies and offered to pick up dinner for us. The cottage is beautiful and very well maintaned. We had plenty of room and were very comfortable during our stay.

Owner's Response: Sarah - So glad it worked out for you folks to visit us! i appreciate your mentioning that my cottage is well-maintained. I work hard to make sure the Sandbox Cottage stays in good condition and is well-equipped for our visitors. My goal is to make sure its visitors can walk in and feel completely at home from day one, and it is indeed a roomy place, including both front and back screened-in porches. You were delightful guests and I hope to see you again on Daufuskie! Deborah Smith, Daufuskie Rental Group and Owner, Sandbox Cottage.

Great cottage on Daufuskie Island!

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying at the Sandbox Cottage on Daufuskie! Deborah went over and beyond to make us feel welcome and make sure we had everything we needed for the week. Daufuskie is such an interesting place with a wealth of history. The beach was great and not crowded. Honestly, our favorite thing to do as a family was just explore the island in our golf cart. If you're looking for a place to really unplug, this is it!

A good house on a great island!

  • 5 of 5

The house was well equipped with all items required for a week's stay. Deborah was a great help and very kind. Deborah (through VRBO) is able to assist with ferry and ground transport.

It is very sad and concerning to see so much of Melrose closed. The Inn, pool, restaurants, and golf are all closed on Melrose. Bloody Point in open and the pool was nice. Deborah was able to offer pool access and directions. With the closure of Melrose, there is also some new businesses on the Island. The coffee shop and massage spa was a hit. The Glass house, hard to find but worth it. Such a nice place.

This is our third time on the Island and our second booking with Deborah. She is great!

Owner's Response: Adam - I was glad you and your family enjoyed Daufuskie! Yes, we are looking forward to better days at the resort, but there is so much more to Daufuskie than that. You've mentioned many of them. Of course we also provide access to the private Haig Point Club's golf club and equestrian center, the Bloody Point pool and golf course are being enjoyed by many of our guests, and then there are our wonderful beaches! And...even better!... are our quirky restaurants, unique art galleries, friendly people, spectacular wildlife, and the pleasure of staying on a quiet away-from-it-all island when the only traffic jam is waiting for a moment in your golf cart while several deer cross the road! Awesome as always!!

  • 5 of 5

Absolutely wonderful!! Deborah you and your team are awesome!! All you need to do is bake some Chocolate chip cookies !! Thank you for being so welcoming when we arrived and even checking on us during our stay. Our issue with the carts I do believe was our fault, we are all golf cart illiterate! You came throw and made it right and we had all the golf carts we needed. I love your cottage and I hope Melrose can get back up and running because it is also beautiful. I can not wait to be on the island and we will be back soon. Thank you and make sure to tell Karen thanks for everything!! See you all soon!
