The Sandbox Vacation Home offers families who are seeking a rental property on Daufuskie Island a unique opportunity for beautiful vacation home with many extra benefits.

This premium-level 3-bedroom beach cottage is perfectly located! This cottage really does have it all! Situated on the 2nd row of the Melrose cottage area, you will have a glimpse of the ocean at the front, and both marsh and golf course direct views from the back. The Sandbox Cottage has a HUGE backyard with its own hammock for snoozing or reading under the Great Oaks draped with Spanish Moss. The cottage's yard adjoins the 8th green of the Melrose golf course (a Jack Nicklaus-designed course).

And the secluded Melrose beach is approximately a 90-second walk from your front door!

A truly nice feature of this cottage is that it has extended-sized screened front AND back porches. You'll be able to start your day sitting in your Adirondack chair sipping coffee while watching the morning sun rise over the ocean, and end your day with cocktails and dinner on the back porch while enjoying the island's plentiful sea shore birds flying over the lovely marsh area.

The interior of the cottage is lovely as well. This is one of the renovated beach cottages, and you will enjoy an open and spacious living/dining/kitchen area that is great for family get-togethers or quality time with a group of friends. It includes, of course, a flat screen TV, DVD player, and Wi-Fi. Your fully-equipped kitchen with Corian counters is perfect for preparing meals that can be enjoyed inside or out on the screened-in porch.

This vacation home also comes with a charcoal grill for your own barbecues, beach chairs, and a beach umbrella.

The Sandbox Vacation Home is beautifully decorated and has many unique touches including colorful Low-Country prints and comfortable appointments throughout. The master bedroom includes a king-sized bed (note: photos not yet updated to show that upgrade), a bump-out alcove with comfortable chairs for reading or watching TV, and a private bathroom. The remaining two bedrooms each have two full-sized beds and share a full bathroom decorated with artwork featuring Daufuskie scenes. All bedrooms have flatscreen TVs.

Concerned about the logistics of coming to the island, getting groceries, etc etc? No need to worry! You will receiving lots of good information and assistance from the owner who lives on the island and will be available 24/7 for any problems. As with all of DRG's rental guests, we strive to make the Daufuskie experience a stress-free and enjoyable adventure. Once you're here, the owner will be available to introduce you to both the resort and our unique and beautiful island that you will want to explore on the complimentary golf cart provided with this cottage.

So why delay? Daufuskie is waiting...

The owner accepts well-behaved canine members of the family. However, the dog must be over one year old, not aggressive towards people or other pets, be house trained, does not get up on the furniture, and is ok with being left alone when you are away from the cottage (no incessant barking or destructive behavior). We also ask that you will be a responsible pet owner when the dog is outside, that your dog is up-to-date on flea and heart worm treatment, that there will be no signs that your pet was in the property when you depart, and that you will be responsible for any damage and/or extra cleaning caused by your dog.

The pet fee is $100 for the first dog and $50 for the second dog. All funds collected for this purpose are earmarked for food and vet care for the owner's rescued pet sanctuary.

About Deborah Smith

I am a full-time Daufuskie resident, and am the owner of Daufuskie Rental Group team. I am active in many island volunteer activities, and serve on the Daufuskie Island Council. I enjoy sharing the Sandbox Cottage with island visitors, and especially introducing guests to our special island.

Deborah Smith purchased this cottage in 2005

Why Deborah Smith chose Daufuskie Island

When I purchased this property, I chose it because it offered a beautiful and private setting with close proximity to the beach. Although most of the Melrose cottages are two-bedroom configurations, I thought that a three-bedroom design (which was accomplished during the cottage's extensive renovation) offered more opportunities for family and friend visitors to share the island with us.

What makes this cottage unique

This is one of the few three-bedroom Melrose beach cottages. It has both screened-in front and back porches, and the back porch is extra spacious.

The Sandbox Vacation Home is also one of the few Melrose beach cottages with a functioning gas fireplace, perfect for chilly evenings in the Fall and Winter months!

An Exceptional Island Cottage: It's one of the nicest places we've every stayed

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Deborah's home in mid-May 2017 while attending a wedding at the Sea Oak Manor, across Daufuskie Island from here. Deborah's place is great, with a screened-in porch on the front (looking towards the ocean) and a screened porch on the back (towards the forest). The bedrooms are beautiful and the bathrooms are very large. The living/dining room is very comfortable, with a large dining table and a very comfortable leather couch. I counted 28 places to sit available in the house, if you wanted to have a crowd over for dinner. With only five of us staying here, we were never crowded. The kitchen is very well-equipped and there are two Weber charcoal grills. Speaking of well-equipped, we've never been to a rental with more great things - it's full of books and dvds and games. There's Direct tv on all three televisions. The cottage is only a few minutes walk (or a one minute golf cart ride) from the beach. While we were there, on two occasions, we were literally the only people on the beach for two hours each time. (A couple and their dog walked by once - that's it.) We loved Deborah's home and really loved Daufuskie Island and it's historic places. We appreciated very much that the golf cart was included in the price of the house rental. And our ferry rides and ground transportation on the island were organized for us by Deborah's company, so that took all of the complications out of our local transportation. From the ferry parking lot on the mainland to the front steps of the cabin, our trip over to the island was seamless (special thanks to the ferry crew and Freddie who drove us on the island, and who is a great guy). And speaking of great people, Deborah went far beyond the call of duty for us. We really appreciated that she bought two bathing suits for us on Hilton Head, when we arrived at a beach island with a kid's bathing suit missing from the suitcase. Thank you very much for everything Deborah. It was a great visit. We wish we booked a longer stay. We live about 7000 km away from Daufuskie, so it may be a while before we're back, but if we do, we would definitely stay at the Sandbox Cottage again.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your kind comments, and all of us at DRG are very glad you enjoyed your stay at the Sandbox Cottage. More importantly, we are glad you appreciated the charms of the island itself. Yes, Daufuskie IS a very special place, and visitors particularly enjoy the friendly people, secluded beaches, and extraordinary wildlife. We do hope you make your way down to our neck of the woods once again, and we look forward to seeing you at that time. Deborah Smith, Owner, Daufuskie Rental Group and Owner, Sandbox Cottage

Ideal island retreat

  • 5 of 5

This was our first vacation to Daufuskie and our expectations were exceeded thanks to this thoughtfully appointed cottage and Deb’s informative and warm welcome. Just steps from the most delightful and secluded little beach you could imagine, the cottage is an easy golf cart or bike ride to Freeport Marina (home to the Old Daufuskie Crab Co. and General Store). Even on a complete rain-out day (more than 2” dropped), doors open to the screened porches on front and back created an incredible, relaxing breeze through the house. There was a DVD collection to fall back on, and a well-appointed game collection to pass the time. On a sunny day, we tooled around the island to check out historic sites, had a great soft shell crab lunch at Lucy Bell’s, and relaxed on the beach at Bloody Point where our dogs were in heaven. For a beach vacation without the hustle and an unbelievable amount of natural beauty and quiet, there are few places on the southeastern coast that stand up to Daufuskie Island and Deb's cottage. We are already planning our next trip!

REALLY enjoyed Daufuskie

  • 5 of 5

Great layout to this house, and it has everything you'd want. Clean and very nicely furnished. Screened in porches front and back create a great breeze. You don't need to bring anything except for groceries. We spent every day exploring the island via golf cart, ate lunch at Lucy Bell's and Old Daufuskie Crab Co, swam and sat on the beach, grilled out at night. Huge thanks and appreciation for Deb and her team and colleagues - the ferry to the island and transport to the house were so easy. My wife was sick and needed a prescription - with Deb's help it was delivered right to the house. The house is great, the history and nature on the island make for fun exploring, the dining and drinking are relaxing and very satisfying, and Deb and everyone else on the island are so kind and accommodating - we've already decided we'll go back this time next year. Thanks, Deb, for a vacation we'll remember for a long time!

Ideal Cottage comfort!

  • 4 of 5

Great location for us with the wedding events at Haig Point and Bloody

Point, we were situated right in the middle. Clean and comfortable with

floor plan that was ideal for our group. Deborah was very helpful with working out our reservation, orienting us to the island,

and generously offering us two golf carts when the

six seater was not available. Enjoyed the oak tree lined lanes and morning

walks on the beach just steps from the cottage. An enchanting place

to stay! Thank you Deborah for your attention to detail and the hard work

you do to make your guest's visit memorable.

Island Paradise

  • 5 of 5

Our ladies getaway could not have been better at the Sandbox Cottage at Melrose Resort on Daufuskie Island! Our cottage was clean, tastefully decorated and Deborah was right there with anything we needed. In the early evening we could sit on the front screened porch and see the ocean or on the back screened porch and play board games and watch the deer and squirrels in the back yard. Our relaxing days included beach walks and pool time. Exploring the island activities, restaurants, nature walks, attending the FirstUnion Church and visiting resident artist's shops are a must.

There are still things we missed but will return to stay longer and bring the grandchildren. They will love it! Thank you Deborah and the nice folks on Daufuskie Island.

It was a lovely cottage. Spacious enough for everyone and clean

  • 4 of 5

We stayed at The Sandbox for our first ever trip to Daufuskie. It was well appointed with everything you need for a beach vacation. The kitchen had everything you need to cook with. Beach chairs and beach toys for the kids. A great charcoal grill was available. The cottage is second row from the beach, but honestly it's a two minute walk. We did not feel we were missing out. The beach club pool was also very close ang great. I would recommend a stay here to anyone and we are looking forward to going back!

Island Locations of Special Interest

There are many interesting places to visit on Daufuskie, including the locations described below. All of these places will be marked on a map found in your arrival welcome packet.

Opened in early 2015, the Daufuskie Rum Company (270 Haig Point Road) is a micro-distillery that makes authentic, American made hand-crafted rum. To schedule a tour call 843-342-4786. Distillery and store hours are 10:00 am - 4:00 pm Wednesday - Saturday.

The Iron Fish Art Gallery (tel: 843-842-9448) is always open, even if its resident artist, Chase Allen, is not present. Chase has been featured in numerous Southern and Coastal Living publications and recently won a national “American Made” contest sponsored by the Martha Stewart magazine. Lots of interesting things to see here, and visitors enjoy exploring his art work on both the front porch and in an outdoor gallery area. Love honey? Chase has his own bee hives, and you can buy jars of freshly-made honey.

The Silver Dew Pottery opens for the season on Tuesday, April 30th and remains open through October. This studio is run by Lancy and Emily Burn, longtime Daufuskie residents. This year marks the 100th anniversary of Lancy's grandfather arriving on Daufuskie to serve as the Bloody Point assistant lighthouse keeper. You can hear some fascinating stories about the island's history from the Burns during your visit to this shop.

The hours for the Silver Dew Pottery are 9:00 am - 2:30 pm:, Tuesday through Friday

The historic Jane Hamilton School, formerly used as the school for children living on the north end of the island, has been restored by the Daufuskie Historical Foundation and is currently home to the Gullah Learning Center and the Daufuskie Island Community Library. It also serves as the polling location for Daufuskie's elections precinct.

2. Located next door is the Billie Burn Museum, which was formerly the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church. The museum contains a fascinating collection of island artifacts and historical documents and also offers some distinctive gift items.
