So why delay? Daufuskie is waiting...
The owner accepts well-behaved canine members of the family. However, the dog must be over one year old, not aggressive towards people or other pets, be house trained, does not get up on the furniture, and is ok with being left alone when you are away from the cottage (no incessant barking or destructive behavior). We also ask that you will be a responsible pet owner when the dog is outside, that your dog is up-to-date on flea and heart worm treatment, that there will be no signs that your pet was in the property when you depart, and that you will be responsible for any damage and/or extra cleaning caused by your dog.
Normally, the pet fee is $100 for the first dog and $50 for the second dog. All funds collected for this purpose are earmarked for food and vet care for the owner's rescued pet sanctuary.

About Deborah Smith
I am a full-time Daufuskie resident, and am the owner of Daufuskie Rental Group team. I am active in many island volunteer activities, and am chair of the Daufuskie Island Council. I enjoy sharing the Sandbox Cottage with island visitors, and especially introducing guests to our special island.
Deborah Smith purchased this Cottage in 2005
Why Deborah Smith chose Melrose on the Beach
When I purchased this property, I chose it because it offered a beautiful and private setting with close proximity to the beach. Although most of the Melrose cottages are two-bedroom configurations, I thought that a three-bedroom design (which was accomplished during the cottage's extensive renovation) offered more opportunities for family and friend visitors to share the island with us.
What makes this Cottage unique
This is one of the few three-bedroom Melrose beach cottages. It has both screened-in front and back porches, and the back porch is extra spacious. The Sandbox Vacation Home is also one of the few Melrose cottages with a functioning gas fireplace, perfect for chilly evenings in the Fall and Winter months!

First time on Daufuskie but won’t be the last!
Loved the beach and this fun little island. The cottage was perfect for our group of six women and the golf cart was a very nice addition. We will definitely be back!
Mother Daughter trip
My daughter and I stayed at the cottage over spring break we had a wonderful time, Deborah took time to explain the island and all that there was to do. The cottage has three beautiful bedrooms and the front and back porch are nice to enjoy a cup of coffee on. It was wonderful to have the golf cart as it is the main mode of transportation on the island. We will definitely be back .
Exactly What We Were Looking For
This was our first trip to Daufuskie Island and we were really looking forward to it. Deborah and Karen were both wonderful to work with during the booking process. There was a mix up on our ferry schedule, and despite it being our fault, they fixed the issue immediately.
The gentleman who met us at the dock to take us to the house was great! He gave us a rundown of where things were on the island and pointed out some of the best places to visit and eat. Deborah was at the house when we arrived and was very understanding that we had driven all night and were exhausted! She gave us basic information about the house and golf carts and then let us get some much needed rest. She came back later in the afternoon to give us more detailed information.
We had some minor issues with the golf carts and Deborah addressed them immediately. She was always just a phone call away and provided some great information about the island. She even took my daughter and her three friends, who are animal lovers, to the cat sanctuary so they could see all of the cats.
Overall it was a wonderful trip. We were looking for somewhere to go to relax and this was the perfect place. We wish we had more time on the island but definitely plan on coming back.
It was sad to see that the Melrose resort was closed and in disrepair. I can only imagine what a perfect and beautiful setting it had been in the past. I really hope they find a new owner and return it to it's former glory!
cozy and beautiful cottage
The owner, Deborah was wonderful and very accomodating; she even came out in a rain storm to bring us some supplies and offered to pick up dinner for us. The cottage is beautiful and very well maintaned. We had plenty of room and were very comfortable during our stay.
Sarah - So glad it worked out for you folks to visit us! i appreciate your mentioning that my cottage is well-maintained. I work hard to make sure the Sandbox Cottage stays in good condition and is well-equipped for our visitors. My goal is to make sure its visitors can walk in and feel completely at home from day one, and it is indeed a roomy place, including both front and back screened-in porches. You were delightful guests and I hope to see you again on Daufuskie! Deborah Smith, Daufuskie Rental Group and Owner, Sandbox Cottage.
Great cottage on Daufuskie Island!
We loved staying at the Sandbox Cottage on Daufuskie! Deborah went over and beyond to make us feel welcome and make sure we had everything we needed for the week. Daufuskie is such an interesting place with a wealth of history. The beach was great and not crowded. Honestly, our favorite thing to do as a family was just explore the island in our golf cart. If you're looking for a place to really unplug, this is it!
It was such a pleasure to have you here, and I was glad you took advantage of all the Daufuskie has to offer! The Sandbox Cottage is a great 3 bedroom option for families or friends who just want to get away from it all!

A good house on a great island!
The house was well equipped with all items required for a week's stay. Deborah was a great help and very kind. Deborah (through VRBO) is able to assist with ferry and ground transport.
It is very sad and concerning to see so much of Melrose closed. The Inn, pool, restaurants, and golf are all closed on Melrose. Bloody Point in open and the pool was nice. Deborah was able to offer pool access and directions. With the closure of Melrose, there is also some new businesses on the Island. The coffee shop and massage spa was a hit. The Glass house, hard to find but worth it. Such a nice place.
This is our third time on the Island and our second booking with Deborah. She is great!
I was glad you and your family enjoyed Daufuskie! Yes, we are looking forward to better days at the resort, but there is so much more to Daufuskie than that. You've mentioned many of them. Of course we also provide access to the private Haig Point Club's golf club and equestrian center, the Bloody Point pool and golf course are being enjoyed by many of our guests, and then there are our wonderful beaches! And...even better!... are our quirky restaurants, unique art galleries, friendly people, spectacular wildlife, and the pleasure of staying on a quiet away-from-it-all island when the only traffic jam is waiting for a moment in your golf cart while several deer cross the road! Deborah Smith
Lots of great restaurants, art galleries, local artisan businesses, and historic sites to explore on Daufuskie! In addition, visitors may want to consider some of the available activities.
May River Excursions
Captain Chris offers dolphin-watching, fishing, crabbing, and shrimping excursions. Please tell him we referred you.

There are many interesting places to visit on Daufuskie, including the locations described below. All of these places will be marked on a map found in your arrival welcome packet.
Opened in early 2015, the Daufuskie Rum Company (270 Haig Point Road) is a micro-distillery that makes authentic, American made hand-crafted rum. To schedule a tour call 843-342-4786. Distillery and store hours are 10:00 am - 4:00 pm Wednesday - Saturday.
The Iron Fish Art Gallery (tel: 843-842-9448) is always open, even if its resident artist, Chase Allen, is not present. It also serves as the polling location for Daufuskie's elections precinct.
2. Located next door is the Billie Burn Museum, which was formerly the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church. The museum contains a fascinating collection of island artifacts and historical documents and also offers some distinctive gift items.
