Classic Virginia white clapboard farmhouse - on land farmed by the same family since 1864, with views of Spy Rock and Sugar Tree Hollow.
This century farm is situated on what is considered one of the most beautiful landholdings in the area. Native trout streams abound on the property - the pond is spring-fed, with a dock and adirondack chairs for sitting and relaxing. The farm house with its exposed chestnut beams, creamy white walls and yellow pine floors is quite simply amazing. An old hickory wood stove dominates the open living room and promises warmth on chilly nights. The kitchen with its vaulted ceilings, skylight and old fashioned pantry is sweet. Vaulted ceilings and large bay windows in the open master bedroom give things an open air feeling with views of the mountains and streams. There is even a clawfoot tub in the master bathroom overlooking the pond. White rocking chairs line the front porch and remind us of how uncomplicated things used to be in the old days.
Second Creek Farm is owned by Luther and Catherine Cash and is one of the last remaining authentic mountain farms beside the Blue Ridge Parkway. Luther grew up on the farm as did several generations of Seaman's and Cashes. Second Creek was a thriving sheep and cattle farm (cows still graze there Spring through Fall) and there were always a few work horses and a milk cow in the fields. The barns are unchanged, in fact you can still see where 'Dolly' and 'Dan' ate their hay and where their harnesses were hung. Luther manages the farm and wildlife habitats.
Second Creek is one of those places where you can just feel the history. Boys in overalls helping Grandpa put up hay, cows resting under the sugar maple trees in the fields, hoot owls hooting at night from the top of the big pines up on the high ground. It is a place of perfect peace that is hard to describe.
Thank you to the wonderful owners who have shared this home for others to enjoy! There were so accommodating and we were all so sad to leave. Thank you!
We had one of our best vacations at Second Creek Farm. What beauty and peace there is at the farm! We really enjoyed having coffee on the front porch every morning, being greeted by Tom the cat and watching the cattle, horse and donkey graze. We loved exploring the property with Ben and Shirley! The pond was nice to fish. The mountain views were lovely. We enjoyed the fire pit as well. We also hiked Crabtree Falls and Spy Rock. Spy Rock was amazing, if you can scramble up the rock once you've hiked 1 1/2 miles to reach it. Breathtaking. The house is beautiful and comfortable and very clean. Just needed a wine glass:) We went for our Anniversary and would love to bring the kids back!

We stayed at the farm for a long weekend in mid September. The weather was nice and temperate and allowed us to enjoy the many activities at the farm and nearby areas. We took our four year old daughter for her first fishing experience at the pond on the property and she LOVED it! The farm mascots (donkey, horse and cat) were also a source of so much enjoyment. Just having time to unplug and spend time together as a family in beautiful surroundings and home was such a wonderful treat! We hope to be able to come back soon!!
The house is just beautiful, all the comforts of home without the pressures of being available to the outside world!! Note that cellphones do not work at the property but the wonderful owners do provide access to the house phone when you arrive. There is wifi available at the house but we didn't make use of it other than to check in with our pet sitter. The house is beautifully restored, there's a fire pit, greenhouse, catch and release pond nearby, farm animals and beautiful scenic views. We visited the fish hatchery just down the road which was fun for our daughter and we also took some time to explore the local hiking trails. Highly recommend to anyone looking to escape!!
My Husband and I stayed at the Second Creek Farm while our children were busy at summer camps. We were looking for somewhere off the beaten path, quiet with easy access to hiking. We found it here. What a gorgeous piece of property right in the middle of the Blue Ridge Mountains. You can't find a prettier setting. The house was very well cared for with lots of modern conveniences but is also an old farm house. The wood floors all throughout the house are beautiful. There is an open floor plan with only one door for the bathroom downstairs. The loft is beautiful with a very comfy bed. The clawfoot tub was a dream!! Everything we needed was there. The kitchen has a fabulous old oven that cooks better than mine at home! We loved the simple down-home decorating. The view was outstanding. You are welcomed by Tom the Cat who is the friendliest cat in the world! He just wants to be loved on. Then Shirley, the donkey, and Ben the horse, come to visit and they are very sweet. My favorite part is looking out at the pond and seeing the cows grazing. They were beautiful and would all stop to look at you whenever you came near. We wandered the property and took a boat out on the pond, which you can swim in and is very clean and refreshing. We walked up to Spy Rock which is 2 miles uphill to get to but well worth it!! Virginia is a site to behold and it shows off on the top of Spy Rock! Do not miss it! And how cool to be able to walk there from the farm. Make sure you follow the directions they leave for you in their book. The information book was very helpful for hiking and where to find other things around and also for learning about the history of the farm. The fish hatchery is right around the corner and we stopped by it on our way back down the mountain. It was very interesting. We were able to sit on the porch as a summer thunderstorm rolled by. It was very beautiful. We were able to receive text messages for the most part with their wifi but they had a landline that we gave our children to call us and check in with. It worked great. We met Luther as we were leaving and he is a very kind, friendly man. Thank you for the hospitality and for sharing your farmhouse with us city folk! We could not have asked for a more peaceful, quiet, solitary place to reconnect and relax. We highly recommend this property and plan to go back and bring our children to disconnect from the world for a while.
My family had a fantastic three days at Second Creek Farm. We played music on the front porch and watched the cows graze. We had a great time fishing in the pond. Tom the farm cat was an unexpected delight for our two kids. There were even a couple jackrabbits hopping around at dusk.
The farm house is beautifully appointed with just the right modern and antique touches. We loved the open floor plan of the second floor loft. It's definitely best for a close family since there are no walls up there.
We also enjoyed hiking the nearby Crabtree falls and visiting all the trout at the hatchery just down the road.
The kids cried when we left, they loved it so much! We can't wait to visit again.
Off the Blue Ridge Parkway and around the corner from the historic State Trout Hatchery. Just across the farm's creek is the trailhead to the Appalachian Trail, Spy Rock and Crabtree Falls and some of the best hiking and trout fishing in Virginia. Several wineries are a short drive away as are a number of apple orchards and on-farm markets.

Second Creek Farm is a working farm. Guests should be aware that as is the case with all working farms, farm equipment, tools, farm buildings are off limits. Farm animals are unpredictable and should be avoided. Dogs/pets are not allowed (as Shirley the farm donkey would be jealous). Use of the pond requires life jackets (guests must provide their own).
