About the property

Charming Cottage With 2 Bedrooms, 1 1/2 Baths, and 2 Decks: 2 Minutes To Beach

Charming cottage bungalow, well-stocked and cozy, with wide pine floors, open floor plan, private decks and yard, renovated kitchen, washer/ dryer. With short-walk access to Willard Beach / Simonton Cove, walking distance to nearby Willard Square, and ready access to the urban amenities of greater Portland, as well as southern and mid-coastal Maine, this home offers the ideal jumping-off spot for your Maine vacation.

Everyone who walks through the door of this bungalow falls in love with its charm. There are two decks -- one off of the kitchen (great for morning coffee) with a gas grill, and a larger one off of the living/dining room -- and a large private yard that abuts a protected lot.

There are new windows throughout the cottage, as well as French doors to the larger deck, to open for that fresh Maine sea breeze. Willard Cottage is within walking distance of Scratch Bakery (fantastic baked goods and sandwiches), local handmade ice cream shops, the area's best neighborhood beach, and one of the Portland area's most popular restaurants. Bring your walking shoes and your bikes, as you'll be walking and riding all over the area for the local eats!

The kitchen is fully stocked with every kitchen utensil and appliance a chef could want, including coffee maker, toaster, microwave, blender, pots for cooking lobster, chef-quality gas range/oven, etc. If you are curious about something specific, please feel free to ask.

The cottage has been thoughtfully furnished with a warm and stylish mix of antiques and more contemporary furniture. The artwork has been thoughtfully chosen and placed, and the house is stocked with fresh, new bed linens and towels.

The first floor has an entrance vestibule, an open living/dining area (with access to the large deck), a full bath, the kitchen (with access to the smaller deck), and a guest bedroom with a full-size bed.

Please note: The first floor is a bit, "wonky", due to the age of the cottage and settling of the foundation over time. We consider this to be part of the charm of the cottage, but it can be a bit unsettling, initially, until you become accustomed to it and get some "sea legs" under you.

Access to the second floor is via a spiral staircase from the kitchen to the upstairs sitting room, which has a sofa and TV, and where the closet for the stacked washer/dryer unit is located. There is a delightful 'Juliet' balcony off of the sitting room that overlooks the yard and the protected lot, and from which you can see Casco Bay / Simonton Cove in the late fall and winter months. The master bedroom, which has a queen-size bed and an ensuite 1/2-bath, is also on the second floor and is accessed from the sitting room.

Please let us know if you are curious about any particular details of the house, or need further information or clarification. While this is not a 5-Star luxury hotel, it is a remarkably comfortable place to stay in a wonderful location.

About James

Hello! My name is James, and welcome to Willard Cottage. I began traveling to Maine about 20 years ago to visit some of my dearest friends, and I fell in love with Portland and the surrounding area and developed a dream to buy a summer vacation and retirement home on/near Casco Bay. In 2013, that dream was suddenly realized when my partner/husband and I purchased Willard Cottage. I say, 'suddenly realized' because we had no notion that we would be buying a property during yet another vacation to visit our friends in, 'SoPo', who also live in the Willard Beach neighborhood -- but, like going to the SPCA, 'just to look', we came home with a new addition!

James purchased this cottage in 2013

Why James chose South Portland

Although not a luxury choice in lodging, this cottage is one of the most comfortable and charming bungalows you will ever experience. It has character in spades (including a 'wonky' first floor, due to the age of the cottage), is perfectly located, and immediately makes you feel at home from the moment that you walk in the door. Those are the reasons why we bought it, and why we want to share it with you.

What makes this cottage unique

The cottage is one of the most private and charming homes in the Willard Beach neighborhood. It is tucked-in behind 2 other homes that front the street -- so it is off of the street -- and one side of the property abuts a nature reserve lot that is owned by the city (not build-able). The yard and garden is also beautiful, with pea-gravel and blue slate walkways, and private decks that overlook the yard. The proximity to Willard Beach / Simonton Cove is remarkable, and the location and ease-of-access to neighborhood eateries and the urban amenities of the Portland area make this home a perfect location for a vacation with variety. This cottage is a perfect spot at which to unwind and relax -- and its warm and welcoming character will leave you with fond memories of a vacation well-spent!

Great escape from the city!!

  • 5 of 5

My girlfriend and I wanted to get out of the city for a couple days and found this to be perfect escape. A short Uber ride into the downtown area brought to some of the best eats we've had in a while, including a hidden pizza place in the Market St. area. Scratch Baking Co. was a short walk away and perfect for coffee, bagels, and pastries! With a wonderful sandy beach down the road, we'll definitely be back in the late summer/fall. The place has everything you could ask for and worked great for us! We can't wait to get back up to SoPo!

Great little place

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time at the cottage. The space is perfect for 2, but could easily fit more guests. It's an easy walk to Willard Beach and a longer walk to lots of other cool South Portland things, as well as a quick drive over the bridge away from the Old Port. It's a great "home base" for checking out Portland. Highly recommended.

Just what I needed!

  • 5 of 5

I needed a Fall getaway and some "simple" living days and this cottage was absolutely delightful. It was perfectly clean, warm, and like a second home. The bed was super comfortable and linens were high end. It was a great location to walk to the coffee/bakery and some well-known area restaurants. I enjoyed a stroll to the lighthouse along the scenic drive of lovely homes. I am already planning a return visit and you shouldn't miss out on this little gem! No negatives, at all! James is such a delight also, he provided all needed information prior to leaving for the trip, so I had no hastle at all---just relaxation!

Pleasant stay on Willard Beach

  • 4 of 5

Nicely decorated, well-maintained, with well-appointed kitchen. Access to Willard Beach is easy and convenient. Yard and porches comfortable for sitting. The master bathroom upstairs lacks a shower, a slight drawback, and the lower floor, is, as the owner says, 'wonky.' It slants.

However, I recommend this place. Good service, reasonable price and close to all Portland and coastal activities.

Adorable little place to relax and enjoy

  • 4 of 5

The whole process of getting to the cottage was incredibly smooth. We had great directions for finding this little hideaway and were met by Katie who took us through the house and showed us everything. And I mean everything, extra towels, beach chairs and umbrella, flat screen tv, dishes ,glassware utensils all of which were spotless and numerous. The cottage itself is chock full of incredible knickknacks, beautiful vases, retro lamps. Every where you looked there was something of interest. The upstairs bedroom had the additional benefit of an air conditioner and it is sad to say that even in Maine you might need one. It was 93 degrees during the day and our evenings were nice and cool. The cottage is just a few houses down from the beach and a few blocks from downtown. It was a lovely way to spend a week in Maine and I would recommend it to any one interested in South Portland.

"There is a kind beauty in imperfection"...Conrad Hall.

  • 5 of 5

We drove up to this little green bungalow and noticed the roof line was a bit askew and initially we found our brows to furl. Once inside, we discovered the reason. The pine floors were original, fastened together with square nails, and sloped downward to an approximate 30 degree angle. At first, we were taken back and wondered if we were drunk or just seemingly drunk. However, we quickly settled in and laughed about the quirkiness of the foundation. We stayed 8 days and 7 nights and grew to adore this charming beach cottage. Adore is an understatement. The scene we experienced was like a Norman Rockwell painting. We awoke to hearing light conversation from the neighbors next door - no one closes their windows. There were no privacy fences in the neighborhood. Children were playing hopscotch on the sidewalk and our next door neighbors built a lemonade stand. Relaxing at the beach, we noticed a young boy reading a book in the sand. No towel beneath his book; he was turning the pages completely focused on the rhetoric beneath him. This was the most beautiful and serene place I had ever stayed on vacation. The cottage was clean, fully stocked for cooking and the beds were comfortable. The location is superb - just a mile from Ft. Williams Park where we took our morning run and a quick Uber ride to Old Port. I will return to this place next summer, Lord willing and if the creek don't rise. It is a hidden gem...and sadly, I cried when it was time to leave. If you are into luxury surroundings, and 1000 thread count sheets, please pass this by. This place is reserved for folks who truly understand the meaning of life.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your kind review. You were WONDERFUL guests, and we'd be delighted to have you return, next year! I fully appreciate the surprise you experienced upon entering the cottage -- and, based on your feedback, have more clearly noted the, "wonkiness" of the first floor in the description of the cottage on the VRBO listing, and have also noted this in the pre-arrival welcome message that is sent to upcoming guests. [Of note, the floor of the living area on the first floor actually slopes about 12 degrees, according to the structural engineer who inspected the cottage before we bought it, but it can certainly SEEM like 30 degrees the first time one enters the front door). We've become so accustomed to it that we barely notice it, now (and consider it part of the charm of the cottage), but, again, I'm thankful for your feedback and the opportunity to ensure that guests are aware of this aspect of the cottage, up-front. We are so glad that you enjoyed your stay, and that you experienced what we consider to be a slice of heaven on earth -- and, again, we do look forward to having you as a guest next year! All the best to you and your family -

This absolutely charming cottage bungalow, located in the Willard Beach area of South Portland, is only a 2 minute walk from the beach (6 houses away) and only a 5 minute walk from Willard Square -- home of Scratch Bakery and Willard Scoops ice cream store. In addition, David's 388 Restaurant, one of the best and highest-rated in the Portland area, is only a 1/2 mile away -- and major groceries (Hannaford and Shaw's) are only a 5-minute drive away.

The beach is absolutely lovely and is easily accessed at the end of the street -- and the views from the Willard Beach / Simonton Cove point are simply stunning.

Downtown Portland and the Old Port area are only a 10 minute drive away -- with access to museums, shopping, restaurants, and ferries to the islands.

In addition, Freeport, ME -- home to LL Bean and incredible outlet shopping -- is only a 30 minute drive from the cottage, and there are many day trip options available up and down the beautiful Maine coast.
