About the property

Brand new, spacious, airy cottage across from beach, great views, yet private

Permit Number: BBWK2014-0001

Hawaii TAT # W40850386-01

We have passed rigorous inspections for your health and safety. You can be confident we will not be closed down by the county.

Escape the traffic and the touristy areas yet be right on the ocean watching sunrises and moon rises over the ocean, surfers, whales, windsurfers and kite surfers. Our location is central to all the places you will want to go and we are at your service to share our knowledge and love of Maui. We offer guests a chance to join our local friends at our BBQs or to join us for a swim in our favorite secret spots, just a short drive away. Guests can also choose to just do their own thing or to book a more extensive tour with us. It's totally up to you.

The Space

Our cottage was built in 2012 and we welcomed our first guests in 2013. It has all appliances , comfy Serta bed, all-cotton bedding, pillows, towels, etc. Sliding mirrored doors separate the bedroom from main room. The cottage sits on the ocean below our upscale neighborhood and your only neighbor is a doctor on one side and us up the hill behind in the home we bought in 1999. If you are traveling with another couple, we also have a room with its own bath in the main house for rent and full use of the rest of the house. See ad at

My husband and I stayed in the cottage a couple of nights to check it out and make sure it is homey. The bed is so comfortable -- Serta mattress, plush mattress pad and new all-cotton sheets quilt and shams are wonderful!

Now with air-conditioning and Direct TV! And we have an AED in the main house, a Christmas gift from our son!

As much privacy or socialization as you like -- I stock it with coffee, tea and condiments and bread, bagels and butter in the freezer to get you started on breakfast. We provide you with snorkel gear, beach chairs, coolers, etc. and give you tips on good things to do and things to avoid.

Separate bedroom and bathroom has 2 doors so there is privacy if one person wants to sleep and the other stay up or get up. Plenty of room for two or for a family with a child who can sleep in a crib (available to rent from No Ka Oi Baby Rentals) or on the couch.

We can also refer you to friends who will give you local rates on activities such as water sports, downhill biking, used car rental and art gallery. We can give you each 3 day passes to the YMCA for classes, weights, racquetball or pool.

The area we are in is called 'Central Maui' because you can easily drive to everywhere else. Yet our particular location feels more like country with open beach and ocean in front and to the north. Be aware that there is no commercial business within walking distance but the beach and a golf course are there for pleasure walking!

Guest Access

Anywhere on the property.

Interaction with Guests

As much or as little as you like.

The Neighborhood

Our neighborhood is upscale, our neighbors really friendly owners -- we often have BBQs here with them and always include our guests if they'd like to join us. The beach is right across the road in front of the cottage and when the surf is big, it's great to watch the surfers there. When there's no surf, the beach is empty. We love it both ways! It's not a swimming beach but those are a short drive away and by staying here, one avoids the touristy, hot, dusty surroundings of the beach cities

Getting around

We have a bus system and Jordan and I can drop guests off on our way places but a car really is recommended as only tour buses go up into the valleys and up to the top of Haleakala.

Other Things to Note

We stayed in a B & B years ago in Switzerland and the women treated us like family and it had such an impact on us that we try to do the same and make our guests feel at home. On the other hand, you may want to just do your own thing and that's perfectly fine, too.

About gail nagasako

Jordan was born and raised in Lahaina and comes from a well-known and highly respected family. His grandparents immigrated here from Japan. He went to University of Hawaii for 3 and a half years and has traveled extensively in the South Pacific. He and his wife also traveled England, Sweden and Europe and a half-dozen US states. He was owner of a highly successful fish wholesale business and knows just about everything there is to know about the ocean and the things that live there and the things you can do in and on it. He’s a happy-go-lucky guy who is game to do just about anything on a moment’s notice.

Gail was born and raised in Michigan. After graduating from the University of Michigan, she fulfilled a childhood dream by moving to Hawaii. She is the founder of H.A.P.P.Y., a social and networking group for homeschoolers. As such, she planned social events, offered crafts and field trips., She still counsels families interested in homeschooling and is the author of "Homeschooling: Why and How" and "Real L.I.F.E. Parenting." She is a writer, speaker, and artist.

Both Jordan and Gail are veteran Red Cross volunteers and should anything happen on Maui, you will be in good hands.

We have been married for 37 years and have a son, Thumper (Yes, that’s his real name), a retired professional rollerblader, having been in the top ten worldwide his entire career. He competed in such renowned contests as X-Games and Gravity Games. He is the highest rated videographer/editor in Hawaii, having All-Five-Star reviews and participates in a multitude of sports.

gail nagasako purchased this cottage in 1999

Why gail nagasako chose Wailuku

Before we bought this house 15 years ago, I asked my family where they most wanted to live and we all said this subdivision. It's like country but not so wet as Haiku, which can be moldy, nor so hot and dusty and crowded as Kihei and Lahaina, and not so far and cold as Makawao and Kula. We love the feel of being private and quiet and yet so close to everything commercial, the parks, the Maui Arts and Cultural Center, the hospital, the YMCA, the malls, good restaurants and our favorite: Iao Valley where we go for short or long hikes and swims in the cool clean river pools. We didn't want to downsize so we built the cottage last year so we'd have a bit of income so we could continue living in this heavenly spot.

What makes this cottage unique

We pride ourselves in giving the personal touch. We offer our guests a chance to mix with locals at our BBQs, or to join us for a swim in our favorite spots. And if they want to remain totally on their own we respect that as well.

Fresh air, beach ambiance, not touristy, views of sunrises and moon rises and whales playing (December through March) and surfers, stand up paddlers, and an endless source of driftwood for our fire pits.

We are a place for people who don't want to be in a touristy area or condo with people all around, who want a local feel and privacy, yet be on the ocean, and who want to be able to easily access other areas of the island. As you can see from our sample reviews I copy/pasted from another site we've been using, Jordan and I are the properties best amenities!

Lovely cottage with a great view

  • 5 of 5

This property was an exceptional value. For a stand alone beachfront cottage with these amenities I was surprised and pleased at the cost. But even more important than the cost, it was a wonderful experience.

The cottage has everything you could hope for--well stocked and so many special touches from fresh Hawaiian fruit to a celebratory bottle of champagne for my husbands birthday. It was a pleasure to be able to make breakfast each day in a well equipped kitchen (there was even gluten free bread in the freezer when we arrived--a welcome surprise.) There are books, games, many snorkel sets, a guitar, and even a surf board. There was a convenient full sized laundry set up that we used more than once after days at the beach. Also, there is a good sized secured yard with great parking--essential for us to load/unload and store our watersports equipment. We enjoyed the small beach across the street, but because of the rocky bottom and good sized waves we found swimming a bit of a challenge--better for surfing.

I was concerned about the privacy of the cottage--always hard to determine from photos--it could not be better. It is a gated cottage set away from the road and away from any other houses including the main house which is well above you on the hill behind the cottage.

Many of the prior reviews have described the hosts--and all of my email exchanges with Gail were lovely and she is a wealth of information. But honestly, I am more of a self-contained traveler who arrives in a location for a specific purpose--not one of those people that enjoys the engaging warmth of a B&B--more of a leave me be and I'll find my own way type. So I was a little nervous seeing the reviews of joining in on family parties etc. For others like me--let me assure you that while the hosts are incredibly welcoming and invite you via text/email to join them if you wish, they are in no way pushy and if you decline they give you all the privacy you want. It was the perfect blend for us and the mark of a truly good host who is able to gauge their guests and accommodate them.

Thanks for a great start to our stay on Maui!

Amazing cottage, location and hosts!

  • 5 of 5

All the other 5 star reviews are spot on. The cottage was a perfect place to celebrate our anniversary.

The cottage itself is extremely well stocked and very comfortable. It's located in a private, quiet residential area right across from the beach and was ideal for relaxing and listening to the surf. When we wanted to go out, it was within an easy drive of most anywhere we wanted to go (except Hana, and the road to Hana is all about the trip).

Gail and Jordan are superb hosts. They provide an information package that draws on their extensive knowledge of Maui and can provide additional advice tailored to your specific interests (their suggestions for hiking in Haleakala were spot on, and resulted in a much better experience for us).

Normally when traveling, I book airline tickets, then find a VRBO available on those dates. If I find myself back in Maui(and after this trip, I'm inclined to return), the availability of this property will be the first consideration.

Many thanks to Gail and Jordan!

Home away from home

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay very much. The cottage is located away from the touristy areas, which we like. It’s quiet and right across the street from a beach. It made for a very relaxing time away. Gail and Jordan have the place stocked with everything we needed. The beach chairs and towels were used every day. One of my favorite parts, we didn’t have to pack many clothes since there was a washer and dryer.

Owner's Response: We are so glad you enjoyed your stay and made use of the washer and dryer. Thank you so much for giving us a head start on the sheets and towels! As you can imagine, we have a backlog of work, having been in Hana for three days, so your help was especially appreciated. I'll send a video of Maui to your email address to relive your visit and whet your appetite to coming back. Aloha, Gail & Jordan

Perfect cottage on the beach in Maui

  • 5 of 5

We loved every minute of our stay! Gail and Jordan were the most gracious os hosts--from the time we first reserved the cottage until well after our stay. The cottage is just across the road from the beach. We loved watching the waves crash during the day and hearing them at night. The ocean breezes were refreshing and we left the windows and doors open as much as we could. The cottage is well furnished, clean, and comfortable. This was our second trip to Maui but the one we liked best. We did the Road to Hana (buy the Gypsy Guide app) and Haleakala, drove through the up-country and around the western mountains and avoided the cities and tourist areas as much as possible. Mahalo nut loa, Gail and Jordan and a hui hou.

Five stars, just like all the reviews say

  • 5 of 5

Everything was perfect: Friendly host with lots of information, beautiful view from a very short distance from the Pacific Ocean (across the street from a long narrow park), clean well-equipped home with even more features and amenities than we hoped for, even food and drink ready to be enjoyed.

It's on a quiet street in a quiet neighborhood a few miles from Kahului, close enough when we wanted Costco or other stores and attractions, but far away enough not to have the noise, traffic, and congestion.

Gail told us we didn't need to pack too much because it was so well-equipped and had a large washer/dryer there, but we did anyway and regretted it. We had duplicated things already there and did laundry several times instead of wearing everything we brought. Listen to Gail.

The route from OGG to the house passes right by Costco, so buying your supplies then is a good idea except that we bought items that the house already had, so perhaps you want to wait until you've seen what's there. For our visit the kitchen already had spices, oils, sauces, jam, coffee, etc., that previous guests had left behind. We saw no supermarket or restaurant near the neighborhood.

Our five peaceful, happy, contented days flew by.

Owner's Response: Thank you, Trygve and Lyla, for the nice review. We really enjoyed having you as guests and getting to share our favorite walk and pet wild duck with you. And I will emphasize to future guests to not buy condiments or spices or any of that until they see what we have. Some were left but we also stock the cottage with those so people don't have to buy a whole bottle of something when they will only use it one or two times. Jordan came back last night from serving with Red Cross in Florida. Overall the experience was a positive one and the thing that impressed him the most was people's gratitude. Come see us again and meet him and maybe we can all go out on the boat. Aloha, Gail

Aloha! We loved it!

Monday, September 11, 2017 - Monday, September 18, 2017

Gail & Jordan's beach cottage is the perfect base from which to discover and experience the Island of Maui. Comfortable and well-stocked, this cottage allows you to focus on your vacation. Gail is the perfect host. She made sure we had many recommendations and ideas for things-to-do and places to go.

As well as eating our way across the island, we enjoyed many activities;

- bicycling down Haleakala

- exploring the Haleakala volcano

- watching the sunset from above the clouds

- snorkeling with the turtles at Makena Landing

- exploring the Road to Hana (including the gravel road on the backside)

- exploring West Maui

- and many other adventures

The Maui beach cottage was the perfect retreat to relax and enjoy to Aloha spirit. After breaking my toe in the middle of the week, we ended up spending one full day in the cottage. It was the perfect place to slow-down and recuperate.

Thank you to Gail & Jordan for making this possible.

Owner's Response: Thank you, Craig and Maria, for the great review. We thrive on those. And a big Mahalo for having the laundry all done and everything so clean! That sure made my job easier. I even ever so carefully unfolded the bottom sheet to see how you folded that so neatly :-) I hope you got the link to the drone video of Maui and that it will entice you to come back and I can take you on that hike to Iao that I promised! Aloha, Gail & Jordan
