About the property

Brand new, spacious, airy cottage across from beach, great views, yet private

Permit Number: BBWK2014-0001

Hawaii TAT # W40850386-01

We have passed rigorous inspections for your health and safety. You can be confident we will not be closed down by the county.

Escape the traffic and the touristy areas yet be right on the ocean watching sunrises and moon rises over the ocean, surfers, whales, windsurfers and kite surfers. Our location is central to all the places you will want to go and we are at your service to share our knowledge and love of Maui. We offer guests a chance to join our local friends at our BBQs or to join us for a swim in our favorite secret spots, just a short drive away. Guests can also choose to just do their own thing or to book a more extensive tour with us. It's totally up to you.

The Space

Our cottage was built in 2012 and we welcomed our first guests in 2013. It has all appliances , comfy Serta bed, all-cotton bedding, pillows, towels, etc. Sliding mirrored doors separate the bedroom from main room. The cottage sits on the ocean below our upscale neighborhood and your only neighbor is a doctor on one side and us up the hill behind in the home we bought in 1999. If you are traveling with another couple, we also have a room with its own bath in the main house for rent and full use of the rest of the house. See ad at

My husband and I stayed in the cottage a couple of nights to check it out and make sure it is homey. The bed is so comfortable -- Serta mattress, plush mattress pad and new all-cotton sheets quilt and shams are wonderful!

Now with air-conditioning and Direct TV! And we have an AED in the main house, a Christmas gift from our son!

As much privacy or socialization as you like -- I stock it with coffee, tea and condiments and bread, bagels and butter in the freezer to get you started on breakfast. We provide you with snorkel gear, beach chairs, coolers, etc. and give you tips on good things to do and things to avoid.

Separate bedroom and bathroom has 2 doors so there is privacy if one person wants to sleep and the other stay up or get up. Plenty of room for two or for a family with a child who can sleep in a crib (available to rent from No Ka Oi Baby Rentals) or on the couch.

We can also refer you to friends who will give you local rates on activities such as water sports, downhill biking, used car rental and art gallery. We can give you each 3 day passes to the YMCA for classes, weights, racquetball or pool.

The area we are in is called 'Central Maui' because you can easily drive to everywhere else. Yet our particular location feels more like country with open beach and ocean in front and to the north. Be aware that there is no commercial business within walking distance but the beach and a golf course are there for pleasure walking!

Guest Access

Anywhere on the property.

Interaction with Guests

As much or as little as you like.

The Neighborhood

Our neighborhood is upscale, our neighbors really friendly owners -- we often have BBQs here with them and always include our guests if they'd like to join us. The beach is right across the road in front of the cottage and when the surf is big, it's great to watch the surfers there. When there's no surf, the beach is empty. We love it both ways! It's not a swimming beach but those are a short drive away and by staying here, one avoids the touristy, hot, dusty surroundings of the beach cities

Getting around

We have a bus system and Jordan and I can drop guests off on our way places but a car really is recommended as only tour buses go up into the valleys and up to the top of Haleakala.

Other Things to Note

We stayed in a B & B years ago in Switzerland and the women treated us like family and it had such an impact on us that we try to do the same and make our guests feel at home. On the other hand, you may want to just do your own thing and that's perfectly fine, too.

About gail nagasako

Jordan was born and raised in Lahaina and comes from a well-known and highly respected family. His grandparents immigrated here from Japan. He went to University of Hawaii for 3 and a half years and has traveled extensively in the South Pacific. He and his wife also traveled England, Sweden and Europe and a half-dozen US states. He was owner of a highly successful fish wholesale business and knows just about everything there is to know about the ocean and the things that live there and the things you can do in and on it. He’s a happy-go-lucky guy who is game to do just about anything on a moment’s notice.

Gail was born and raised in Michigan. After graduating from the University of Michigan, she fulfilled a childhood dream by moving to Hawaii. She is the founder of H.A.P.P.Y., a social and networking group for homeschoolers. As such, she planned social events, offered crafts and field trips., She still counsels families interested in homeschooling and is the author of "Homeschooling: Why and How" and "Real L.I.F.E. Parenting." She is a writer, speaker, and artist.

Both Jordan and Gail are veteran Red Cross volunteers and should anything happen on Maui, you will be in good hands.

We have been married for 37 years and have a son, Thumper (Yes, that’s his real name), a retired professional rollerblader, having been in the top ten worldwide his entire career. He competed in such renowned contests as X-Games and Gravity Games. He is the highest rated videographer/editor in Hawaii, having All-Five-Star reviews and participates in a multitude of sports.

gail nagasako purchased this cottage in 1999

Why gail nagasako chose Central Maui

Before we bought this house 15 years ago, I asked my family where they most wanted to live and we all said this subdivision. It's like country but not so wet as Haiku, which can be moldy, nor so hot and dusty and crowded as Kihei and Lahaina, and not so far and cold as Makawao and Kula. We love the feel of being private and quiet and yet so close to everything commercial, the parks, the Maui Arts and Cultural Center, the hospital, the YMCA, the malls, good restaurants and our favorite: Iao Valley where we go for short or long hikes and swims in the cool clean river pools. We didn't want to downsize so we built the cottage last year so we'd have a bit of income so we could continue living in this heavenly spot.

What makes this cottage unique

We pride ourselves in giving the personal touch. We offer our guests a chance to mix with locals at our BBQs, or to join us for a swim in our favorite spots. And if they want to remain totally on their own we respect that as well.

Fresh air, beach ambiance, not touristy, views of sunrises and moon rises and whales playing (December through March) and surfers, stand up paddlers, and an endless source of driftwood for our fire pits.

We are a place for people who don't want to be in a touristy area or condo with people all around, who want a local feel and privacy, yet be on the ocean, and who want to be able to easily access other areas of the island. As you can see from our sample reviews I copy/pasted from another site we've been using, Jordan and I are the properties best amenities!

Relaxing like a Local

  • 5 of 5

Gail and Jordan were perfect hosts. So friendly and hospitable. The cottage was clean and well stocked. Beautiful sunsets and nice calm morning listening to the ocean. Close to grocery and Target. We really enjoyed our stay in the cottage. Very relaxing.

Owner's Response: Thank you, Stacy & Dan, We are so glad you enjoyed your trip and it was fun reading your emails before arriving, knowing how excited you were to come. Thank you for taking such good care of our place and for the entry in the cottage journal. We hope you will return some day. I'll be sending you a link to a drone video of Maui that our son did (he's a professional). It will help whet your appetite for your next trip! Aloha, Gail & Jordan

Kick back and relax at your own private ocean-side Maui cottage

  • 5 of 5

Location is great: the cottage is perfect for people wanting a place right on the ocean, away from the busy and highly developed condo areas. Everything on the island is readily accessible by car. The cottage has a beautiful ocean view from the deck; it’s clean and comfortable, with all the amenities that mattered to us.

Gail and Jordan thought of just about everything, including: toothpaste, toothbrushes, laundry detergent and coffee and breakfast foods. The kitchen was fully functional and stocked with items such as spices and condiments. On our arrival, we found a welcoming bowl of fruit and macadamia nut treats. All of these things were very much appreciated.

Extras: Gail and Jordan also provide a useful array of quality beach gear to make the stay in Maui much more pleasant. Maui occupies the same latitude as Mexico City and the Sahara Desert, so a nice beach umbrella comes in handy. They also provide beach chairs, boogie boards, some snorkel gear, a surfboard, and a cooler. Gail sent very useful information about Maui and the cottage before our arrival, and that info was also provided in hard copy at the cottage. Gail and Jordan were friendly and invited us to a couple of places with them. Importantly, they were “just right” friendly: not intrusive at all, respecting our privacy. Evenings were spent watching the ocean and stars from the deck, as well as walking or sitting on the nearby beach. Why limit your experience to the crowded resort/condo areas- explore all of Maui from your home base in Kahului, and return each evening to the peace and quiet of your own private ocean view deck. We’d definitely stay at this cottage again!

Owner's Response: Dear Sandra & Tim, Thank you so much for your great review! You captured everything we want to provide in an experience for our guests. We'd still love to show you a couple of favorite places or have you up for a BBQ or outdoor movie night should you visit again. By now spring has arrived to stay in MN and football season is only 4 months away. Always hope for the Golden Gophers to come in second in the Big Ten, right after my Wolverines! Aloha, Gail and Jordan

Cute Cottage

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time, owners were very helpful and were in contact with us before, during and after our vacation. The Cottage is cute, clean and in a very nice location right across the street from the ocean were we watched surfers and whales every day. Very convenient to the airport and short rides to many beaches. Thanks for the snacks and the pineapple, and even a few drinks in the fridge. Hope to be back soon.

Owner's Response: Hi Keith and Deb, Thank you for your review and nice comments -- a good review from someone who has been to Maui many times means a lot. We are still seeing whales, though each day we wonder if it will be the last. Hope to see you here again one day! Aloha, Gail

Excellent value, terrific hosts

  • 4 of 5

Great location if you want to explore the entire Island, be away from tourists and live more local in the largest town on Maui. Can't get any closer to the beach for great sunrises and an ocean dip anytime of day. Anything you could possibly need is provided, the hosts are determined to make you comfortable. You can cook and eat in, do laundry and have the comforts of a home. Thank you Gail and Jordan you are the best.

Owner's Response: We had an awesome time with you two at our neighborhood happy hour and at the Arboretum and are really glad to be FB friends now so we can keep in touch. Thank you for giving me such a head start on the laundry! Certainly not necessary but appreciated. And thank you for the goodies you left for us! And FYI, for anyone reading this, the "largest town on Maui" is still 5 miles away from the cottage! We are on the outskirts. I hope you don't mind but I am including the email conversation we had about the four stars. My email to her: We just noticed you only gave us four stars. Would you mind telling us why? From the beginning in 2013, we’ve had only 5 stars except one person who thought there would be a village nearby, didn’t like the traffic on the road (the surf was epic while he was here so of course, lots of surfers during the day. Most people consider that a plus) and didn’t like the neighborhood! Her reply: Aloha from the airport- everyone rates things differently- not sure we have ever rated anything 5 stars however we hope that our comments more then express our enthusiasm and satisfaction with our experience!!

Nice House. Not crazy about location

  • 4 of 5

All previous reviews about how well stocked this house is are very accurate. We enjoyed the house very much and would rate it Five Stars. Unfortunately, we were not enamored with the local area. Traffic was often busy on the local roads and it took a lot of travel time to get to nicer restaurants. We also found the local grocery store below expectations but found a local Whole Foods with higher quality food/environment. All three of the local hiking trails were also closed. Bottom line is this in neither located in an upscale neighborhood nor a quaint seaside town. Regardless, it is a nice place to spend a few days.

Owner's Response: Hi Steve, Gosh our first 4* review in 3 years! Sorry about the traffic -- it happened that the surf was epic while you were here so there was a lot of traffic on our road. Most people really enjoy watching the surfers during those times. You may have gotten tied up in the school traffic at times, too. Maybe I should warn folks to get out either before 7:30 or after 8:00am. Otherwise it's easier to get places from here than from anywhere else on the island -- that's why our area is called "Central Maui." While you do drive through a not-so-upscale neighborhood to take the fastest route to the cottage, perhaps you were expecting a gated community in our neighborhood? It is upscale by our standards: the property next door, which includes the house next to the cottage, was on the market for $1.3M and the house on the other side of us just had a $1M remodel. And for sure our local grocery store is just a regular well-stocked local store and Whole Foods is a shiny new giant and has everything you'd never even think you needed -- locals call it "Whole Paycheck." But it is familiar to many people so visitors often like to shop there. For health food, we go to our locally owned Down to Earth store on Dairy Road. Sorry also that you expected a seaside village -- I don't know why Google calls it Waiehu Village. Maybe after the 277 acre Hawaiian ruins just down the road??? They are great to walk around yourself or do one of their tours. We are heartbroken that 'Iao has been closed since September. The county park up there is due to open March 1 and the State Park June 1. Meanwhile, we could have directed you to some hikes with waterfalls 15 minutes up the road from us. Sorry we didn't get a chance to spend some time with you. My daughter was a doctor in a Native Alaskan clinic in Sitka for a few years and we have good friends in Anchorage and Wasilla. We enjoyed visiting them and RV camping on the Homer Spit last summer. Aloha, Gail and Jordan

What I love is being able to watch sunrises and then go to Kihei (20 minutes) or Lahaina (35 minutes) for a sunset picnic and come home again to our country-feel area. We almost always have Tradewinds coming right off the ocean so the air is some of the cleanest on the planet.
