A few words about our living philosophy: We do want you to know that we try to be very responsible when it comes to protecting ourselves and the earth. Our homes are a "shoes at the door" experience. Therefore we do ask that our guests remove their shoes while in the house. We are HUGE composter/recyclers, do everything we can to save water, and have an eco home thermostat heating/cooling system. Our home Nest thermostat will sense when you are away and shut off. It will then sense when you come into the house and turn back on. It works quickly and "cranking" it up will not make it heat or cool faster. It does not run during the night. We have replaced most of the interior light fixtures with ceiling fans and installed a ceiling fan in the outdoor pergola. We have also installed a locking screen door on the front door to allow for the wonderful Sonoma afternoon breeze to be enjoyed. We only use organic products in the garden. Therefore, our kitchen garden that is available for guest harvest is completely organic fruits, vegetables and herbs.
We have recently installed security cameras on the exterior of the house for added security and comfort.
We are aware of the fragile condition of the planet and we do our part to use organic products, use less of everything, and have as small an impact as we can. We encourage you to do so, as well.
We offer central gas heat and air conditioning, ceiling fans and cool evening breezes in the summertime. The breezes are our personal favorite. The backyard has a pergola with ceiling fan and gorgeous lighting for your outdoor evening dining and lounging pleasure.
To add to our environmental thoughtfulness, we use a smart thermostat. This is preset to reduce use at night and when you leave the house for any extended periods of time. The savings we get from this feature is built into the nightly rate. If you choose to run the A/C or heat beyond those settings, we will need adjust your nightly rate accordingly. This allows everyone to take advantage of those savings if they choose that approach. It also allows you to run the systems to suit your particular needs.
You are within walking distance (5 blocks) to the Historical Sonoma Plaza with all it has to offer. Restaurants with excellent food and a casual flair.
You're in arguably the best wine valley in the world. Visit the wineries and see how they create. Talk with the winemakers. Learn, taste, and buy the best only minutes from the house.
The Plaza is bordered and defined by old buildings that ask you to imagine the past. Shop and explore between meals. Play by day, relax in the evening. Stroll to dinner and back or dine on your own backyard patio with locally grown food. Cook what you love in the comfort of the kitchen with a view. Stare out at the hummingbirds on the patio, past the umbrella and tiered fountain to the small vineyard, kitchen garden and redwood trees and on to the hills and Sonoma Mountain beyond.

About Diane Doyle-McGill and Michael McGill
Mike and I live in the bay area and have another property for rent near the SFO airport. Mike works for the Presidio Trust in San Francisco and I am a Landscape Designer. I am a true California native who was lucky enough to marry a great mid-western guy from Wisconsin. We love designing and renovating, music concerts, biking and hiking, and cooking together.
Diane Doyle-McGill and Michael McGill purchased this House in 2013
Why Diane Doyle-McGill and Michael McGill chose Sonoma
We have always traveled to Sonoma and wanted to own a home here. The day came in December 2013 and we thought it would be an ideal location to live and retire someday. But in the meantime, we put a lot of love into the house and wanted to share it with you!
What makes this House unique
We fell in love with this house because it screamed 'love me!'. This is a lovely home with good bones and gentle character. We loved the kitchen looking out onto the very large backyard and Sonoma mountain beyond. We saw so much potential and wanted to renovate it back to what it use to be. We respect the age of the house while adding beautiful, quality modern touches.

Fabulous cottage for a couple or a family. The house is located near the Sonoma town Square. The house itself is immaculate with a full service kitchen. The house has a magnificent backyard and is landscaped beautifully in the front as well. This is a perfect location to enjoy Sonoma County, the town square and there are wineries within three or 4 miles of the house. A perfect house to enjoy all the delights of Sonoma.
My husband and I spent a wonderful week in Sonoma and very much appreciated this restful retreat! The home is charming and immaculate. The backyard was beautiful and we enjoyed relaxing with a glass of wine after long days of touring wineries in the area. It is located in a quiet neighborhood and within walking distance of the town square where we enjoyed many restaurants. We were so happy that we chose Sonoma and this home when visiting Wine Country!!
My friend and I stayed at this lovely home for a week in April. The house is beautiful, very nicely decorated and well appointed. The backyard, with its lovely vineyard is a true escape - a great place to relax with a glass of wine after a hard day of hiking, sight seeing and shopping. The house is very quiet - my friend gets up at the crack of dawn and I, who slept in until 7 every morning, never heard her. There is nice separation between the bedrooms. It is very close to the Plaza and the Whole Foods market - an easy walk to both. Diane and Mike are extremely gracious hosts. We had a wonderful stay and would certainly stay at this relaxing, comfortable retreat again.
Don't hesitate to stay at this beautiful home!
My husband & I recently stayed here for 7 nights and we could not have been happier. Diane greeted us upon arrival and gave us a tour of the house and the beautiful backyard. The pictures are an exact representation of the rooms. Everything is new and the decor is soothing and we felt relaxed immediately. The beds are comfortable and the bedding and linens are soft and cozy. You have your own driveway so there is no problem with off street parking at all. But the true prize is the landscaping. The backyard is a little slice of heaven. We had breakfast outside several mornings and even picked grapes from Diane's little vineyard. The kitchen is well stocked and has everything you need to cook with. The location is in the heart of Sonoma in a nice residential neighborhood. There are many restaurants, bars, wineries nearby and most within walking distance. There are three major grocery stores/markets within walking distance. We also easily drove to Napa, the Coast, San Francisco, and to and from the airport. It's the perfect location for exploring. I researched a lot of hotels and B&Bs before choosing this rental. And after getting to Sonoma and seeing all of those in person - I am so glad we choose to stay here instead!!!! Yes there is only one bathroom but it's not connected to either bedroom so I don't see a problem sharing. And another review mentioned the school behind the house. It is an elementary school and we did hear little voices sometimes during school hours - but it is nice and quiet and private in the evenings. Go ahead and book this rental. You won't regret it!
Beautiful and quiet home in Sonoma
My husband and I enjoyed 5 lovely days in Sonoma. We found the house to be well appointed and within a 15 minute walk to the heart of Sonoma. The backyard was beautiful with a small vineyard, vegetable garden and fountain. We enjoyed many dinners sitting outside in the evening listening to the children playing at the school behind the house. We were able to leave the windows open at night and enjoy the cooler temperatures.
The house has been completely remodeled and had all the comforts of home. It was perfectly situated and was an easy walk into town and Sonoma Market. It was perfect for the two of us and would probably work for a small family with older children or two couples that do not mind sharing a small space. It appeared to have many of the everyday kitchen items which was very nice.
I would recommend this place if going to Sonoma. It served as a great location and central base for our visits to Napa, Yountville, St. Helena, Santa Rosa (skip this place) and Petaluma.
It only has one bathroom which may present a problem for more than one couple. The owner met us at the house upon our arrival and showed us around which was helpful.
