Perfectly Serene Setting

  • 5 of 5

A friend and I stayed mid-week so we really had the river to ourselves. We were actually surprised at the well-stocked kitchen; we didn't need to bring dishes, pots & pans or utensils. This is a really nice little cabin with everything you need for a relaxing experience. Just keep in mind that cellular service is spotty out there. Got great tips & intel from Ed's Bait Shop in Baldwin [Shout out to George:)] May very well come back again. Thank you to the proprietors for a great experience.

Very clean and an outstanding value

  • 5 of 5

The cabin had plenty of space for all six of us with lots of amenities as well. The location was close to where the rest of our family was staying. My kids even commented on what a great job I did picking the right place.

Peaceful and relaxing

  • 4 of 5

We absolutely loved the cabin. It was quiet and beautiful. We had everything we needed to enjoy our week. The only reason I didn't do 5 stars is because we could have used some air conditioning on a couple of the days. We knew there was no air before we got there, we brought extra fans but two of the days were unbearable and we headed to pentwater for the afternoon cause it was to hot to cook inside. But we enjoyed every minute of our stay and would love to go back in the future.

Comfortable cottage on the banks of the Big South Branch Pere Marquette

  • 5 of 5

My husband loves to fly fish and we try to incorporate it into our vacations. Most of the time I am left behind while he goes fishing or I park a chair on the bank of a river while he fishes. This time we got smart and got a cottage ON a river. This property, Lane's Landing, is a bit weathered and a bit outdated, but it definitely is comfortable. We stayed over Memorial Day weekend. My husband was able to fish while I prepared our meals. He would fish and I would sit on the spacious deck in the sun and read. There is no phone reception, no cable tv, no internet - and, we loved it. There is a large selection of DVDs and we watched movies both nights of our stay - there is something for everyone in the DVD collection. On Sunday we drove to Baldwin, about 35 miles away, and rented a canoe and paddled down the Pere Marquette for 4+ hours. We got there at 9am, when the canoe rental opened, and we were one of about a half dozen people on the river. Beautiful! There are a lot of upscale homes surrounding this property and the river out front was pretty active with canoes and kayaks. Everyone was very friendly. It would have been nice (for me) to have something comfortable to sit on that overlooked the river. The back deck of the cottage looks down at a hill that leads to the river, but you cannot see the water from the deck. Overall, though, it was a very relaxing, quiet retreat.

A couple suggestions/clarifications if you do plan to rent this property: I would bring some cooking utensils if you will be preparing your own meals. I made do with what was available but it would have been nice to have a good chef's knife and a vegetable peeler. Also, from the description of the property I had gathered that there was a wealth of trail systems to be hiked right out our front door. But, what we found was a very short trail along the river, maybe a half mile at most. Other than that, we did not get any hiking in - but, we are very interested in returning again and the Manistee National Forest is not far away.

We did get to meet the owners and they were very nice. My only suggestion for them would be to set up your voicemail box on your cell phone. :)
