CHECKIN is 4:00 pm and CHECKOUT is 10:00 am. Depending on the timing of other guests and housekeeping, we may be able to adjust these but cannot guarantee it. As with most homes at Edisto, we are elevated so there are about 6 steps, then a landing, then about 6 more steps to get into our home. There is a railing but we are NOT handicap accessible.
Our home is perfect for year round use with a fireplace to knock the chill off in the winter.
Edisto Beach, a short drive south of historic Charleston, is known for it's beautiful beaches and laid back atmosphere. Whether you are swimming at the ocean, deep sea fishing, dolphin spotting, or enjoying beautiful sunsets, Edisto Beach has something for everyone. ACE BASIN, Botany Bay and Edisto Beach State Park nature areas has this area recently called 'the Yellowstone of the Carolinas'. Daytrips to Charleston (1 hour), Beaufort (1 hour), and Savannah (2 hours) make for great options.
Ocean Ridge is a perfect complement to the natural beauty of the beach. Wyndham Ocean Ridge Resort Passes (additional fees) are available (only to those within Ocean Ridge) to use the family oriented facilities if you tire of the beach. They consist of three pools including the enclosed and heated one, playgrounds, Miniature Golf, Fitness Center, shuffle board, ping pong tables, corn hole, tennis courts, and tram service. Take the tram for a short ride from the resort to the Beach Cabana on front beach (2000 Palmetto Blvd.) A weekly family Wyndham pass can be purchased (2017 Rates are Weekly Family rate $200/ Daily $50 or $15 daily/$70 weekly per person). Wyndham Resort Amenity Passes can be purchased at the Activities Center (843-869-4531) or Front Desk (843-869-4516). We are not associated or affiliated with Wyndham.
Carol and I are happy to answer any questions regarding our home or Edisto. Also our permanent neighbor Ron who lives directly across the street is something of local legend and is always happy to provide local Edisto flavor to any topic from where to get local Shrimp or how to see the best sunset!
Sandy and Carol and their two girls live 50 minutes away in Charleston/James Island. Sandy is a native of Walterboro, SC while Carol is originally from Statesboro, Ga.
Sandy and Carol Sanders purchased this house in 2005
My family has held property at Edisto all my life. My grandfather purchased oceanfront for $50 in the 1940s mostly by accident. Our family's cottages still sit on the same lot in the 400 block of Palmetto Blvd. Having grown up at Edisto during the Summers, I have covered the entire Beach on bike or foot. I was thrilled to bring my wife and children and they love it as their home away from home!
As soon as we walked into this villa, we were struck by its beautiful furnishings and tasteful decor. The owners have thought of everything a vacationer could want or need for comfort and convenience. From the fully equipped kitchen with huge refrigerator/freezer, to the luxurious Tempurpedic king-size mattress in the master bedroom, the comfortable screened porch (our favorite "room"), lovely view, and especially the kitchen RO water system, we had all we could wish for. If you have ever spent time at Edisto or any other beach, you know that RO water is a definite "plus." We appreciated the owner's prompt response to all our questions. Edisto Beach has a quiet, laid-back, relaxing atmosphere without the commercialism of many coastal resort areas. If that's your style of beach vacation, this villa in the quiet Summerwind neighborhood of Ocean Ridge resort will provide just the right accommodations.
If you've been to Edisto Beach before, you are familiar with the fact that the area is prone to hurricanes and flooding. Thus, nearly all the properties are built on stilts with tall stairs to reach them. If you are NOT familiar with Edisto Beach (as we weren't -- we were coming from the midwest), then the stairs are definitely a bit of a surprise. None of the information we read about the unit mentions the stairs required to reach the unit. That's pretty important info if you plan to bring seniors or others who can't climb stairs. In addition, the description doesn't mention that the unit is a duplex, attached to other units. Maybe others expect that, but because the rental description didn't mention it, we didn't realize our unit would be among many others side-by-side-by-side. I think these are aspects that the owners just assume you'll know and so they didn't leave these details out to deceive anyone. But they really are important info to know upfront.
Other items that are important to know:
* When others mention that the washing machine doesn't work, IT REALLY DOESN'T WORK. I'm not sure why it hasn't just been replaced.
* The unit is within a gated community, which is a nice aspect but isn't mentioned anywhere. So you have to check in with the security guard the first time and then show a sign each time you enter thereafter.
* There are other entrances/exits to the property and your GPS might lead you to them. But you won't be able to use them unless you have one of the RFID units to automatically lift the gate. (Our rented golfcart had one, but we didn't have one for the car. So that meant trips outside the property took about three times longer after winding your way back through all the twists and turns of the development to get back out through the main gate.
* The property is full of small lagoons and other areas of water -- that contain alligators. Again for those who aren't familiar with the fact that alligators are a common predator in this part of the country, it can be a bit surprising to realize that you need to keep a really close eye on your pet when letting them out/going for a walk so they don't become "bait."
* The property is very full of deer. So take care at night when driving because you might easily run into them. (And, word to the wise, if you see one, stop and wait because others will soon follow.)
* The rental unit has a digital NEST thermostat, which means the temp can be controlled outside of YOUR control. Just FYI.
After Julia stopped raining on Edisto, we had a wonderful trip! Love your home, the wonderful views and that our furrbaby was able to come. Thanks for sharing your home, we hope to come back next year.
This is our second year staying here. Once again, a fantastic place to have a relaxing vacation with family and friends. I am so thrilled the place is very "pet friendly". I have once again had a great vacation and look forward to next year also. A huge thanks to the Sanders for opening their home fir us to use. Also very easy to work with.
My wife and I on a( Mini-Vacation) really enjoyed all this house had to offer.
The house was furnished as if you were at your own home.
Our stay was really relaxing .The Island was a "Quiet" place.
The bikes came in handy too.
Love this place!!!
We enjoyed their lovely home so much. The screened-in porch was our favorite spot - the sound of the birds and the wind through the palm trees was so soothing. And we appreciated the beach chairs, bikes, and towels very much; that made our traveling so much easier. I will say there were a couple of cleaning issues, but we still enjoyed it very much and we hope to return some day!
