Feel unplugged and remote at the Santeetlah Bear Den Cottage. It is a uniquely designed cottage situated at the end of a private dirt road. The cottage backs up to 100s of acres of US Forrest Service property. You will be surrounded by trees and have your own private dock a short walk down the hill from the front door.
During your days enjoy morning coffee or afternoon refreshments on the deck situated in the woods just above the dock. Go hiking right out the front door deep into the woods. Kayak, canoe, fish, swim, and enjoy the Lake all day long. Read and relax on the upstairs balcony or in the very private backyard. Enjoy grilling and eating outside on the backyard picnic table.
Endless adventures are close by: Visit Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest and bring your mountain bike to tackle the Tsali mountain bike trails. Rent or bring your boat and ski and tube on the Lake. Visit the Nantahala Outdoor Center and zip line thru the woods or raft down the river. Shop, eat and listen at Stecoah Valley Center. If you are a motor cycle rider, you will be close the Tail of the Dragon and the Cherohala Skyway. Endless adventures of all sorts are available in Graham County.
During your evenings keep warm by the wood stove in the cozy living room. Listen to crickets, tree frogs, and other nocturnal creatures from the private upstairs balcony. Enjoy dusk watching the starlings flying overhead from dock side. Roast up a s’mores feast around the back yard fire-pit while telling stories and rehashing your day’s adventures. Wind down from the day’s activities watching a movie and then sleep soundly on brand new bedding in beautifully decorated bedrooms.
We hope you choose to stay at the Santeetlah Bear Den and enjoy the cottage and location as much as we do.
The mountains surrounding Robbinsville were absolutely gorgeous, and Lake Santeetlah was one of the most beautiful lakes I've ever seen. The water stayed a nice blue-green. The cabin was great, and we loved that it was nestled into the woods but just steps away from the water. The moth ball smell came back anytime we left the cabin for an hour or so, and I have to say the floors of the cabin and even the tubs were kind of dirty/dusty. But we may have stayed there after no one had been there for a few weeks. Otherwise, the kitchen was pretty well stocked, beds were fairly cozy, heat worked great and the quiet area was fantastic. The added amenities were AWESOME and included the canoe, kayaks, life vests, paddles, dog bed and fire pit out back — all perfect for getting away from busy life. Thank you for sharing your cabin, and we really appreciate a place to which we can bring our dogs! They are getting older, and we love being able to include them in our vacations :)
We arrived a Friday afternoon to spend the weekend in this cabin and celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary.
We were looking forward to a relaxing weekend on the water.
However, we could not stay more than 45 minutes in the cabin, tried to air it out and vent it out with the house fan, but the musty smell made us feeling so sick, that we just could not stay any longer.
My husband spoke several times to the owner before we booked the place and musty, moldy smell was never mentioned.
The owner spoke about moth balls to keep away squirrels and that we have to turn on the hose fan to get rid of that smell, which will go away in 10 minutes.
Beside the musty smell the place really needs an overall makeover to keep up with current day standards. The place isn't only musty, but also run down. So we tried to get in touch with the owner, notified him that we will not stay and we need a full refund.
Two weeks later we still had no refund.
Awesome Lakeside vacation , The Lake & views are amazing , The House is very nice & well accomadated . Marty was great to deal with & when our GPS sent us the wrong way , she responded quickly .We loved the Kayak's & Canoe . The only reason I gave it 4stars & not five was the house stayed damp & kept a different odor , not bad & will not keep us from coming back. No cell service which was Great!
The house was just as promised- clean, cozy, and private. The provided kayaks were a lot of fun to use, and our dog loved jumping off the dock! We would definitely go back.
This was a clean and lovely home with very comfortable furnishings. The kitchen is well stocked, and lots of towels (hand, bath, and beach) and washcloths are provided.
I spent last week here with my husband, 5 year old daughter, sister, and sister's dog. We spent each afternoon swimming off the dock and using the canoe and kayaks. In the evening, we used the charcoal grill to cook dinner and the fire pit to roast s'mores. It was the most relaxing vacation we've had in years, and I would highly recommend the cabin. We found the owners neither difficult to reach before/during our stay nor misleading. Everything was as expected, if not better.
The stopper in the main level bathroom is missing, which made it difficult to bathe my daughter, and the living room could use additional seating. However, these things would not prevent me from staying here again.
I will say that if nature isn't your thing, this may not be the place for you. While I didn't see any critters in the cabin, bugs, lizards, and snakes are aplenty outside, and my sister saw a bear in the Joyce Kilmer forest.
What a great july 4th weekend. Enjoyed staying at the cabin. It has everything you need - and loved the AC as it was quite warm that weekend.
Clean as a whistle and has a nice yard for games and such. Enjoyed using the kayak- and of course the lake. Thanks for a great time. WE WILL BE BACK!
