About Randy Simpson

Randy and Alison moved to the Big Island from Ontario, Canada in 2013. After visiting for the first time in 2008, we fell in love with the Hamakua Coast. We were able to sell our hotel and restaurant businesses in our hometown of Stratford and make the dream of Mahana House a reality.

Randy and Alison live in a small house slightly uphill from the main house. A few friendly cats roam the farm. They are happy to be petted should you encounter them (perhaps on your lanai…) but are definitely not allowed inside the main house or guest rooms.

Randy Simpson purchased this house in 2013

Why Randy Simpson chose Hakalau

After visiting the Big Island several times, we fell in love with the Hamakua Coast. Once we found this property and the saw view we were hooked. The East side of Hawaii offers a unique experience with great parks, restaurants and hikes for your Hawaii adventure.

What makes this house unique

Large private guest rooms are newly built by industry professionals. Incredibly beautiful climate and view. Perfect for couples. Stay and do exactly as much or as little as you like!

Peaceful and Relaxing Stay at Mahana House

  • 5 of 5

This was our long awaited vacation in a while and all we wanted is some privacy and peace. This beautiful and tranquil house definitely exceeded all our expectations. This 15 acres fruit farm is very secluded and private. The main area of the house is well equipped with first need items. They have everything we needed and more. The bed was super comfortable and you can even adjust the firmness of the bed. Everything inside the room is highly updated. The Lanai had a beautiful view of the farm and the ocean. We enjoyed our stay at Mahana House so much that we will certainly be back. We loved Hilo side of the island, there are a lot of things to do and a lot of beautiful places to visit. Thank you Randy for your hospitality and fantastic service!!! 5+*

Great Place to Relax and Recharge!

  • 5 of 5

Randy and Alison have a great property with water views and fresh fruit. A perfect place to stay for longer trips with the shared great room, kitchen, and bbq! Our room had plenty of space and a kitchenette, not to mention a sleep number bed. Would certainly recommend to anyone staying on the east side of the big island!

Feeling at Home in Paradise

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a comfortable stay at the Mahana house. The whole facility was clean and felt well kept up. We spent most of our time there reading and gazing at the calming view from the Lanai. The fan and cross breeze made the space a very comfortable temperature.

The kitchenette in the room was well appointed and anything else we needed was available in the full kitchen. We enjoyed having bananas and rambutan to add to our breakfasts.

Randy was very friendly, accommodating, and seemed always available while not being obtrusive.

Idyllic retreat

  • 5 of 5

The Mahana House is an idyllic inn nestled in the countryside well away from the busy bustle of Hawaii's commercial centers. If you want to be in the thick of the activity, this is not the place for you. But, if you want to enjoy a peaceful retreat, you couldn't find a better option.

The room is well appointed and comfortable, and all the furnishings are in pristine condition. Each day there was a plate of fresh fruit available in the common area, and Randy had wonderful advice on places to visit all over the island. They made us feel like welcome guests with friends in Hawaii, instead of strangers staying alone in a rented house.

The room has a small porch on the front looking uphill, and a large lanai on the back looking down toward the ocean (which is a few miles away). We loved our time on the lanai, where we caught a glimpse of cruise ship lights in the night, watched the sun rise in the morning, spotted wild boars foraging among the trees, and listened to the ever-present coqui frogs chirp at night. The frogs can be endearing or annoying depending on your mood.

We did have a little trouble finding the inn our first night and felt a bit exposed keeping all the windows open to let in the breeze, but otherwise we could not have asked for a better experience.

It is such a relaxing change of pace. The house is very nice and the sleep number beds were wonderful! Randy was available anytime we needed him. We loved the fresh fruit especially the bananas and lychee. They have everything you need to have a fantastic vacation. The location is very convenient also. If you are going to the big island this is the only place to stay!

Immaculate grounds, and very beautiful and clean accommodations.

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for a place to stay that would be quiet, peaceful and a welcome change from the resort areas of the island. The Mahana House did not disappoint. The owners, Randy and Alison were so kind and helpful, making us feel at home. We were very comfortable and loved the layout and concept of the house. The location is ideal for visiting the incredible botanical gardens, waterfalls and the volcano. We would come back and do recommend it wholeheartedly!
