Mahana House is a quiet and relaxing place to soak up the expansive ocean views and is IDEALLY LOCATED to explore the many lush gardens and spectacular waterfalls nearby as well as Hilo town and HAWAII VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK. There are bananas, avocados, lychee and passionfruit available for guests to enjoy in season.

Some day trip ideas include exploring waterfalls and gardens nearby, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, and MAUNA KEA summit and stargazing. There is virtually no limit to the activities and adventures available to you on the Big Island. We have a 3 night minimum for guest reservations.

About Randy Simpson

Randy and Alison moved to the Big Island from Ontario, Canada in 2013. After visiting for the first time in 2008, we fell in love with the Hamakua Coast. We were able to sell our hotel and restaurant businesses in our hometown of Stratford and make the dream of Mahana House a reality.

Randy and Alison live in a small house slightly uphill from the main house. A few friendly cats roam the farm. They are happy to be petted should you encounter them (perhaps on your lanai…) but are definitely not allowed inside the main house or guest rooms.

Randy Simpson purchased this house in 2013

Why Randy Simpson chose Hilo District

After visiting the Big Island several times, we fell in love with the Hamakua Coast. Once we found this property and the saw view we were hooked. The East side of Hawaii offers a unique experience with great parks, restaurants and hikes for your Hawaii adventure.

What makes this house unique

Large private guest rooms are newly built by industry professionals. Incredibly beautiful climate and view. Perfect for couples. Stay and do exactly as much or as little as you like!

This place was amazing! It far exceeded our expectations.

  • 5 of 5

It is such a relaxing change of pace. The house is very nice and the sleep number beds were wonderful! Randy was available anytime we needed him. We loved the fresh fruit especially the bananas and lychee. They have everything you need to have a fantastic vacation. The location is very convenient also. If you are going to the big island this is the only place to stay!

Immaculate grounds, and very beautiful and clean accommodations.

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for a place to stay that would be quiet, peaceful and a welcome change from the resort areas of the island. The Mahana House did not disappoint. The owners, Randy and Alison were so kind and helpful, making us feel at home. We were very comfortable and loved the layout and concept of the house. The location is ideal for visiting the incredible botanical gardens, waterfalls and the volcano. We would come back and do recommend it wholeheartedly!

Our favorite place

  • 5 of 5

We spent 6 nights at Mahana House and were totally impressed. Our room was perfect - great bed, comfortable sitting area, more than adequate kitchen area and lovely lanai. Randy and Alison were friendly and very helpful. They provided us with beach towels, chairs, and a cooler w/ice. There's a very helpful notebook in each room with suggested day trips, restaurants, etc. A guide book to the Big Island is available in each room. The shared kitchen and great room are amazingly well stocked and very comfortable. I was so impressed by how comprehensive their attention to detail is - every time I needed something, it was there!!! We also enjoyed the bananas and other fruit they put out each day. The weather was not great while we were there but it mattered not - it was so easy to relax and enjoy oneself in the lovely spaces they have created. Highly recommend. I'd go back and not bother with any other place.

Beautiful and relaxing

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I spent 3 nights at Mahana House while visiting the Hilo side of Big Island in December 2016. Prior to our arrival, we found out that we were upgraded to the corner suite, which was spacious and very clean. It was a bit humid without air conditioning, but with the ceiling fan and the windows opened, we had a nice breeze throughout the room. The coqui frogs didn't bother my husband during the night, but as a light sleeper, we kept the windows closed and with a white noise app, I slept without any issues. The sleep number beds were neat and very comfortable. We appreciated the environmentally friendly soaps, wipes and body wash that were included! The wifi/Netflix was a little slow in the evenings, but it didn't bother us. We used the shared kitchen to prepare breakfast and loved sitting out on the lanai. There were avocados, lemons and bananas that Randy and Alison shared with us from their trees which were a real treat! Our flight wasn't until 11pm and Randy and Alison let us take our time to to check out. It was lovely place to stay if you want a relaxing visit to Big Island!

Perfect - Quiet Location

  • 5 of 5

We loved our recent stay. This was our first booking thru VRBO and we were not disappointed. Everything was meticulously taken care of, just the way you would do for a visiting friend or relative. The bed/bedding, the kitchen, and the bathroom were outstanding. The landscaping and ocean view were the best. Thanks for providing the musical frogs!

We do have one small suggestion. The shower floor was a little slippery (for us). Please consider adding a handrail for additional safety, and perhaps a shower mat. We are in our 60's and safety and fear of falling is a very real concern.
