About Eric Hanscom

We are also the owners of Thai-West Resort in Thailand, and enjoy splitting out time between the desert and a tropical island off Krabi, Thailand.

Eric Hanscom purchased this house in 2007

Why Eric Hanscom chose Borrego Springs

We have always loved the desert, and bought this house as a fixer, then took five years to turn it into what it is today.

What makes this house unique

We are located (intentionally) at the far edge of the town of Borrego Springs, to have as much of the Anza Borrego State Park surrounding us as possible. The stargazing out here is unsurpassed in the United States, and there are many fun things to do once you get here. Here are a couple of YouTube videos on our place:

Amazing! Perfect family getaway in the desert

  • 5 of 5

We had an absolutely amazing stay at Borrego Palms. The house is larger than I expected, and it was perfect for our family: myself, my husband, our 3 year old daughter, and my mother. The photos seemed to show bunk beds in the second room, but there was a queen (or full) size bed in the smaller bedroom and a queen and twin in the larger room. Kitchen is huge! Lots of space in the living room too. It was pretry cold and windy outside so we spent most of the time indoors but we didn't mind. I'd go back. I'm even considering a trip to Thailand to check out the owners other property :)

Owner's Response: Thanks for the comments. Good point on the bunk beds. We will update our photos. No kidding on the cold weather! This winter has been brutally cold, but no rain (I'm always willing to trade cold weather for lots of rain, which means good wildflowers)!

Wonderful quiet place

  • 5 of 5

This house was a pleasant surprise to us as we enjoyed the desert out back, the cactus garden out front and the well appointed house amongst the three of us for 2 weeks. The skies were dark at night for star gazing and the out of the way location was quiet and comforting. Dennis, the caretaker was there when we needed him but unobtrusive otherwise. Overall it was a very pleasant experience.

Peaceful and quiet location...except when the attached studio is occupied.

  • 3 of 5

We loved the location and the view. The manager was very friendly and accomodating. The house is comfortable but needs some updates including a hot water heater that does not require running the faucets or shower for several minutes to get hot water. In a geographical area that is in a serious need of water conservation, I feel obligated to pass along. Also, the lighting fixtures were lacking in bulbs and/or sufficient lighting in the kitchen and bathroom. We were fortunate that during most of our stay there was not an occupant renting the attached studio. The only barrier from the bedrooms and the studio is a very thin door with a pretty wide gap, in the hallway. It is locked but the problem was that we could hear their conversations and see movement through the gap. That was somewhat uncomfortable and a deal breaker for us.

Owner's Response: Thank you very much for this information. Regarding the door, we had never had a complaint before, but we can easily rectify this by installing a solid door. Thanks for letting us know. As for the water, the water heater is in the garage and unfortunately we are cursed with 1/2" pipe that goes through a slab, so there is not much we can do. On the positive side, that extra cold water goes into our septic system which is designed to water the plants in the parkway, so the water lost through the drains means less water we have to put through drip irrigation on the plants.

Magical Getaway!

  • 5 of 5

Great experience, start to finish. Stayed in town for a conference, and had an enviable private retreat compared to the resort downtown. Excellent communication from Eric and wonderfully unobtrusive assistance from Dennis. Spacious, quiet, relaxing & rejuvenating property close to everything, while camouflaged against the hills. Bottle of wine and fresh made fudge upon arrival were the cherry on top!

This rental is part of a duplex, the other half of which is a studio. It is nearby the town of Borrego Springs, CA, which has many art galleries, the state park visitor center, and other activities. It is also very close to the Galleta Meadows sculptures. We have our own YouTube Channel, where you can see more about Borrego Palms Desert Vacation Home and the Borrego Springs area in general. Also, we do not allow inside pets. It is due to an allergy of the owner's son, so we cannot make exceptions. Sorry about that! Please note: we do NOT accept foreign checks (way too many scammers) so if you want to stay here, please book through VRBO.
