About the property

Jungle house 0.6 miles from the ocean sleeps 4 with river and mountain views

Buddha said that when you can see 100 shades of green, you have truly reached heaven. This is the feeling you will have at Hale Kuleana, our beautiful tropical jungle paradise home nestled in the Wainiha River Valley. Lush vegetation surrounds you in all directions, with an unobstructed view of the sights and sounds of the Wainiha River. The 2 bedroom, 2 bath house is private, comfortable, and a perfect place to relax, reflect and rejuvenate. The 600 square foot master suite on the second floor has its own tub, shower and lanai. Downstairs are two more bedrooms with new bamboo flooring, full bath, a large open living room, complete kitchen, and dining area. There is also a screened-in lanai with a large dining table, sitting area and hammock.

Near some of the most beautiful spots on the entire island and yet with so much to see comfortably at your own doorstep, you may not want to leave the house for days on end. Stare out at Wainiha Mountain, sit along the river, lounge or dine on the large lanais, nap in the hammock, or relax in the hot tub. Only a few miles to the west are Tunnels and Ke'e, two of the most scenic beaches on Kauai. A short drive east takes you to Lumahai and Kahalahala beaches, and the quaint town of Hanalei with its restaurants, shopping, farmer’s market and perfectly shaped crescent bay.

100 Shades of Green—Hale Kuleana is a tropical paradise. It is very private, but there are neighbors and a shared driveway. It is best suited for couples and families who enjoy the peace and quiet that nature provides.

This is a beautiful home in a very lush river valley. We loved our stay!

  • 5 of 5

The location of this home is idyllic, with beautiful tropical landscaping, a river, fruit trees ripe for picking, and a spa for nighttime star gazing. Within a few miles, there were beautiful beaches for swimming and snorkeling, hiking trails with a view of the Napoli coast, and Limahuli Botanical Garden. We highly recommend this home.

Beautiful, secluded location in the middle of a rainforest

  • 5 of 5

The entire space is absolutely amazing. There's a ton of room, a hot tub to wind down at the end of a day exploring, and plenty of nature to enjoy right there for when you're not feeling up to exploring. If you have an early riser in the group, the property is great to hang out on while waiting for the others to wake. The lanai is wonderful, though we didn't end up making much use of it. There are some friendly geckos and anoles that hang around and are fun to watch, along with a variety of other creatures near the river.

The beds were very comfortable, and the place was ideal for leaving some of the windows open all night, even when raining -- including the doors in master bedroom. Between the river and the rain, it was very peaceful to fall asleep to. Even when it stormed one night, we left them open to enjoy being in the midst of it all.

The kitchen is fully loaded with appliances/utensils, if you're not looking to eat out. There are also many fruit trees on the property, so you may be in for quite a treat depending on if they're bearing fruit.

Gano and Steve also left a great guide with suggestions on what to do on the north side of Kauai.

We split our 6-day stay on this island between here and Poipu, partially due to the south supposedly being more sunny/dry (it wasn't -- they were equally wet, on/off every day) and had more fun on the north side and at this property, despite the Poipu property being a different type of amazing. It's definitely more resort-like and touristy in that area, so when planning your trip, keep that in mind.

Beyond Incredible

  • 5 of 5

This was the best vacation rental I've ever stayed in.

Every detail was thought of, from the great communication leading up to the visit, to the helpful guides and directions regarding location of the house, parking, using the amenities, and the cleanliness upon arrival.

But the real enjoyment was just how beautiful the home itself is and the area it is located. I could have spent my entire vacation on the lanai and felt like it was a success. We didn't, but just saying. I was the early riser of the group, so I got to watch the sun rise every morning, something I really enjoy. We picked fruit off the trees, spent some time by the river, we ate incredible meals on the lanai made of fresh ingredients from the Hanalei farmers markets and various other little shops and finished most days with a soak in the jacuzzi where we had the best view of the stars any of us had seen in a long time.

It was perfect.

Thanks Gano and Steve for opening up your beautiful home for visitors and making it such a comfortable, welcoming place. Kauai is a gem, one of the most beautiful places I've visited. So glad we were able to visit.

This was by far the best VRBO I have ever stayed in...just gorgeous. I was a little intimidated by the directions for getting in and parking and YES, I did have trouble getting out of the driveway after unloading our just don't take your car down me ;). BUT, after we got through that snag...everything was a dream. I can still hear the river flowing outside the master bedroom window. It was an incredible place--great amount of space, lovely kitchen, clean hot tub on the deck, delicious oranges (and other fruits) growing in the yard to pick and eat, and the VIEW. Oh my goodness. My mom and I kept saying...can you BELIEVE this place?! It made our next VRBO stay on the island pale a bit (a lot) in comparison. We are already dreaming of our next stay. It was to die for. Reserve this place now. We loved staying in this area for part of our trip and in Poipu the other half as this house is nice and close to beaches, town, and hikes and Poipu had more of a resort-town feel. If I did it over again, I would plan for 2 days to just sit and enjoy the house. Our only regret was not staying there much and sightseeing's a great place to just hang too. Thank you for this amazing space!!!

Peaceful paradise

  • 5 of 5

We feel lucky to have discovered 100 Shades of Green! This property is literally surrounded by Kauai's lush, beautiful mountains near the iconic Na Pali coast. The drier south was recommended to us (since our visit was during the stormy season), but we chose the wetter more spectacular north, and have no regrets. In fact, we had lovely weather. It was our first time on Kaua'i and our minds were blown by the foliage and scenery as we drove toward the north shore. At first sight, 100 Shades of Green managed to exceed our already high expectations, and with further exploration of the property we realized that we truly had everything we might need at our disposal (including some ripe tangelos growing in the yard, which we picked to juice with our breakfast). We wish we had planned a longer stay (than our 4 nights) so that we could have had more time to relax at the house. The comfy bed of the master and cool air at night in combination granted us excellent night's sleep each time, which promoted a relaxed and refreshed feeling as we awoke to the sun rising over the mountaintops. As each of our action-packed days came to a close, we looked forward to our return to this exotic and peaceful haven for a relaxing hot tub under the stars, during which we enjoyed watching the clouds drift around the nearby mountaintops. It is completely dark and quiet after the sun goes down. You're very close to the Kalalau trailhead and spectacular beaches with a backdrop of the beautiful mountains. Hanalei is a cute little town that's only a short drive away. Getting to the South and West of the island from here takes some time (but the North is by far the most beautiful part, in our opinion). The only wrench in our stay was a power outage that caught us off guard early (before sunrise) one morning as we were preparing to head to the south for a boat excursion. We fumbled our way out and had a great day on the water, and the power was back on when we returned later than evening. We heard there would be excessive bugs and mosquitoes -- and we've both felt like mosquitoes' preferred cuisine on past camping trips or backyard gatherings -- but we didn't feel there was an excess of any kind, despite some significant overnight downpours (applied bug spray just in case, though). We would love to return to this magical place for our next visit to Kaua'i. We hope to share it with family or friends next time. There is definitely enough space for a larger group.

The house is situated six tenths of a mile up the beautiful Wainiha River Valley. It is like a walk back in time to the way Kauai used to be. Just two miles west are many beaches including Haena State Park, Tunnels Beach (featuring great snorkeling with views of the famous Makana mountain peak) and in another mile you’ll be at the end of the road at Ke’e Beach and the start of the Kalalau trail and the NaPali Coast.
