Dewees Island is a private barrier island off the coast of Charleston that is dedicated to preservation. We are a quick ferry ride from all of Charleston's charms, yet the island is peaceful and serene. Dewees remains in a much more natural state than many ocean islands. At the same time, the island has a beautiful community pool. Great fishing, birding, and beaches. We travel by golf cart. And with no stores or restaurants, Dewees is a magical escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life!

Charlotte's Pearl is a pristine barrier island retreat with one of the most beautiful beaches in the southeast accessible only by private ferry. With no restaurants or stores, no cars or stoplights, Dewees Island offers a return to nature with all the comforts of home. We travel only by golf cart on Dewees. Our home is one of only 60 houses on this 1200 acre island. Our house is located near a beach access path which allows for an easy walk to the beach or a short golf cart ride. Most of the two and a half mile long island is untouched by development and over half in permanent conservation. You are often the only ones on the beach. Wildlife abounds on the island and includes deer, water fowl and migrating birds. The two tidal lakes on the island provide great fishing, crabbing, clamming and shrimping. However, just because you feel like you are worlds away from the stress you left behind, you are only 20 minutes from shopping, great restaurants, golf and the romantic city of Charleston via our comfortable Dewees Island ferry. Dolphins often escort the ferry to and from the island.

The custom built elevated second row home provides a wonderful private two acre oasis on the edge of a maritime forest with lake and marsh views. The sights and sounds of nature dominate. You feel like you are staying in your own private tree house with the closest visible home on the other side of the lake. The floor plan is inverted to allow maximum advantage of the marsh and lake views from the living areas and wrap around covered screened porch on the top floor. Each bedroom on the second level opens to a covered screened porch. Both master bedrooms have their own private screened porch. From the rooftop observation deck, the views of the ocean and inter-coastal waterway are magnificent.

As our guest you are able to use all the amenities of the Huyler House such as the wonderful pool area and tennis courts. The Huyler is a magnificent lodge that serves as the center of the community.

Check in time is the 3:00 ferry. Arrive at ferry 46 41st Avenue BY 2:30. Ferry leaves promptly at 3:00

Check out time is the 10:30 am ferry. Arrive at Dewees dock BY 10:10am. Ferry leaves promptly at 10:30

About Emily

Emily and Stewart are the proud owners of Dewees Rentals, aka Watson Property Management Group. They are committed to helping residents and guests navigate the tricky balance of living (and vacationing) gently on a barrier island. Emily helped build Dewees Rentals from scratch starting in 2009, and she and Stewart took over ownership in 2014. She manages reservations, interns, and rental homes from her office in Mount Pleasant. With a background in teaching, Emily never dreamed that she would someday own a vacation rental company! When asked why she does what she does she states, "I love connecting with owners and guests alike! There's nothing more gratifying than witnessing guests arriving in one state of mind (coming from their successful and busy lives) and leaving feeling more grounded and at peace with nature."  She also keeps tabs on their two curious and energetic kids and large dog. In her spare time, Emily loves cooking, design, music, and yoga. She blogs about healthy recipes and the whirlwind of today's parenting at Stewart is the partner you're more likely to see on the island. With a background in construction, he is better known to be rescuing someone from a tricky golf cart situation or taking on a repair. Between the two of them, there's no stone left unturned on Dewees!

Emily purchased this house in 2001

Guestbook comments from the owner

Recently my family and I visited Charlottes Pearl on Dewees. I had waited all year to take this vacation and it did not disappoint. We arrived later than we expected and were able to find the house even in the dark (thanks to a good map and some really nice people out taking a moonlite stroll). When we arrived the house lights were on and everything was so inviting. The elevator was a luxury that I think every house should have. This was my daughters trip to celebrate her birthday. She and her 6 month old baby and a friend accompanied my husband and I. We awoke early, made mimosas and headed for the beach. During our stay we rode bikes, walked the beach, hunted for seashells, built sand castles, rode in the canoe and drove the golf cart around until the battery nearly died on the way back to the house. We saw alligators, deer, dolphins and crabs. My grandson put his toes in the ocean for the first time and tasted his first sand. The house was amazing. The dual master bedrooms afford us lots of privacy. The kitchen had everything we needed to make and serve meals. The doors that opened up onto the screen porch made me happy. We opened all the doors and let the breeze flow. We cooked on the grill. Had margaritas on the deck and listened as the ocean roared in the back ground. Only one surprising thing in the whole experience and not necessarily a bad one; just an FYI. There is only one tv in the entire house. We only had to do a little negotiating to see whether we were going to watch a movie or play video games. The wifi worked perfectly and there were books and magazines available as well. We met some very lovely people on the island as well, foremost was Judy and her charming husband. They were so kind and helped us navigate around even throwing crabs (the spiders of the sea) out of the canoe so that my daughter would not be scared. Their kindness was extraordinary. I learned a lesson though and decided that next time, I would take the advise of the experts and go to the house drop off all the luggage and go to the store later or have the groceries delivered before I arrived. The most difficult part of the trip was taking tired adults and a baby to the grocery store on our way in. My advise, take enough stuff for breakfast and go get what you need the next day. I give Charlottes Pearl a 10 out of 10. I would recommend the house to people of all ages and abilities.

A Welcome Change

  • 5 of 5

After spending 20+ years vacationing at IOP and Sullivan's Island, Dewees was a new adventure and we took full advantage of it! Crabbing, fishing, biking, canoeing, bird watching, alligator watching, great sunset viewing, beach combing, and getting educated at the various sessions offered for "children" (which only our adults attended!). My college-aged daughter discovered a fresh turtle nest on her morning run. The house was great. We enjoyed the west-facing screened in porch in the mornings and evenings, prepared all of our meals in the well-stocked kitchen, used the beach chairs and towels provided (one less thing to bring over on the ferry), and loved the 3 full bathrooms on the second floor. Two of our young adults even slept on the porches. We will be returning to Dewees. We hope to bring guests with us next time so will be looking for something bigger, as this house sleeps 8 comfortably, 10 using the outdoor porches.

Peace and Quiet

  • 5 of 5

We loved this house so much. The island has beautiful beaches and you are greeted by wonderful staff members when you arrive to the island. The house has a wonderful open kitchen and the wrap around porch is perfect to take a na in the hammock on! My family enjoyed the comfort of cable tv and wifi but we barely used it because we spent so much time at the beach! Can't wait to come back!

Peace, Quite, and Beauty

  • 5 of 5

To the ferry trip, walking paths, unspoiled beach and the beautiful house all 5 +Stars. My children and I had a wonderful holiday week. Each day we took walks on the beach, something we did not do as a family in a long time. Even though you are just a 20 minute ferry ride away from civilization, you feel like your are on your owned private island. Best time I had in years. I would rate it as my top vacations. Definitely will be going back.

Unspoiled Paradise!

  • 5 of 5

Charlotte's Pearl on Dewees Island is a true gem! The home is beautifully designed with gorgeous interior spaces. Access to an unspoiled beach is an easy walk on a charming tree-lined road. Leave your windows open at night and hear the ocean waves. We had a wonderful time marveling at the shells that washed up on the beach each morning (usually had the entire beach to ourselves). We hiked, biked and canoed everyday. Screened porches off each bedroom and the upstairs family room help capture the best of indoor/outdoor living while at the beach. Charlotte's Pearl provides golf carts for exploring the island. No cars allowed! This was our first trip to Dewees Island and we loved it, simply breathtaking. We plan to return and hope to make Charlotte's Pearl our home away from home. It is truly spectacular.

A wonderful week for two sisters (we grew up in Charleston) and two grown children. Absolutely a great week with so much to do... This Island is a Treasure! What a terrific environmental example for all to discover. I hope it always remains such a hidden gem.

We explored the Island on foot, bikes and golf carts. We relaxed, fished, crabbed, read great books, walked on the beach, saw deer, snakes, raccoons, rabbits, gators, Bald Eagles, Osprey and many other birds. We loved Capers Inlet at sunset and the beach at night. We caught and cooked the biggest blue crabs we have ever seen. There was a "crab crack" on the porch almost every night.

Many thanks to the owners of Charlotte's Pearl for sharing this wonderful home with us. We all hope to return soon for new adventures.

Quiet and Beautiful Retreat

  • 5 of 5

Charlotte's Pearl has been our retreat on several vacations, in both the heat of the summer and cool fall months. We have had from three to five adults and two, school-age children stay very comfortably in the house with room to spare. Our family loved hanging out on the screened-in porch all hours of the day - taking-in the beautiful marsh views, reading a book while listening to the breezes, or sneaking some alone-time in the hammock. We have especially enjoyed the layout of the main living space, with the lovely kitchen that opens into the spacious family room. Having windows on all sides of the family room gives access to the island's beauty during each daylight hour. This is one of the quietest houses we have stayed in on the island. Having all of the bedrooms on the first floor (and only one tv in the entire house) helps this. We have always liked the house's location in proximity to the beach. It's just a quick golf cart ride and our toes were in the sand. Charlotte's Pearl is a winner in our book!
